Deep in the heart of Texas, where the land is wild and the nights stretch long and lonely, something ancient stirs in the shadows. Whispers travel on the wind, carried by the eerie call of something unseen, something waiting. This week on Drew Blood's Dark Tales, we bring you a story steeped in folklore and fear—a chilling descent into the unknown, where superstition and reality blur and some warnings should never be ignored. From the twisted mind of Elford Alley comes Lechuza, a tale of haunting echoes, unspoken rules, and the price of calling something that should never be called. Turn the lights down low, settle in, and listen close. But whatever you do—don't whistle back. When I tell you we hung off every word Vanessa L. Torres had to say I tell no lie! We were so lucky to have this truly magical human on the show and can't wait for you all to tune in! But first, here's more about Vanessa: Vanessa L. Torres is a Mexican American author, an adventure seeker, and a mom to a flashlight-under-the-covers-reader. She is a thirty-year veteran of the fire service and is equally proud to call her herself an author. Her debut young adult novel, The Turning Pointe, released in 2022. When she's not writing, she balances her time between anything outdoors, and spending time with her family close to home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Vanessas latest book ON THE WINGS OF LA NOCHE is out now! About ON THE WINGS OF LA NOCHE: Death waits for Noche Villanueva. In her human form, she is a lone science girl, grieving the tragic accidental drowning of her girlfriend, Dante Fuentes. In her other reality, Noche is shapeshifter, an ethereal jet-black owl called a Lechuza, an escort for the dead to the mystery of the ever after. It is her legacy, her duty, one she now refuses to honor for Dante because she can't fathom letting her go, even though every moment Dante's spirit roams the earth, the more she fades into the unknown to be lost forever. Then, a new kid comes to town, Jax. They connect in a way Noche can't ignore, her heart beating like it hasn't since before Dante died. Noche begins to imagine a life without the ghost of her first love, until Jax reveals his own precarious mortality, which leaves Noche questioning her inherited purpose and everything she's ever believed in. It is comforting to us as humans to dismiss the unknown, and even toy with and mock it to prove its powerless nonexistence. But what happens when the abyss stares back? When what we thought was a mere board game turns out to be a gateway to the black seas of infinity?
We're a little early for spooky season content but isn't it always a good time to talk about cryptids? I sat down with comics newcomer Ashley Franklin to chat about her new creepy queer YA graphic novel The Hills of Estrella Roja from Clarion/Harper Collins Books. We dig into the inspiration behind the book in the Marfa Lights of Texas, the Lechuza, a chupacabra, and manage to get in a little bit of time for Ashley to profess her undying love for moss. The book drops at the end of August so make sure to get your pre-order in for what is a delightful YA romance horror. Along the border of Northern Mexico and Texas' Rio Grande Valley, there are whispers of a creature known as La Lechuza, a seven-foot owl with a woman's face whose cries can be heard at night, enticing victims to wander into her clutches. In some tellings, the Lechuza was once a human woman, but an act of cruelty committed against her or her child turned her into a vengeful monster. In others, the Lechuza is a witch's familiar, serving her mistress' will by abducting children, or perhaps she is a servant of Satan himself, one who feeds on the negative emotions of the humans who have the misfortune of encountering her. In every version of the legend, though, one thing is certain — seeing a Lechuza is a bad omen, and not one to be taken lightly. https://allthatsinteresting.com/la-lechuza credits: https://allthatsinteresting.com/podcast-credits Thanks HelloFresh! Throughout Mesoamerican culture, they practiced human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism to placate the god of the underworld Mictlantecuhtli ( Mik-Lan-the-klulee). Mictlantecuhtli is usually portrayed in art as a skeleton or covered in bones with red spots representing blood. He wears a skull mask, bone ear plugs, a costume of owl feathers and even a necklace of eyeballs. He has curly black hair and powerful eyes which allow him to penetrate the gloom of the underworld. The owl was a symbol of a bad omen and death. Because of this Mictlantecuhtli is often seen with an owl. This is the bases for the creepy witch like creature that still haunts Mexico and southwest USA. Join us in this different tail of the owl that may just be a witch or a mediator between this land and the underworld. Don't forget to get a free sticker. What's up, party people? Dry County Brewing Co. is about the celebrate their 6th anniversary. We've known founder Trey Sinclair since the brewery was just a dream. Well, mostly. We met Trey when he was contract brewing a couple beers and spreading the word about them around his hometown. When the brewery was just being built we stopped by for a preview. Check it out right here.... https://youtu.be/_VeAUJv2th4 Since our preview way back in 2016 DCBC has expanded to offer spirits and cider along with their brews and they're about to move to a fancy new location. On the spirit side they've got frozen cocktails in the taproom and a line of RTDs (that's "ready to drink" canned cocktails) that are extremely popular. Trey joined us and brought along Director of Hoperations Winn Chastain and Head Brewer Ryan Polk. They shared some of their beers and cocktails as we bitched more about seasonal creep, pondered pairings for their Lechuza line of Mexican lagers, discussed the growing trend back towards more West Coast(ish) IPAs and discussed the agave shortage. There's some tasty stuff coming out of Dry County Brewing. Check 'em out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Aaaaand we're back! After taking an unexpectedly long break, EMBL has returned. The circumstances are bittersweet because Bel is no longer able to be the cohost of the show. we'd like to thank her for helping out as long as she did, and she will definitely be missed :( Mariah has kindly agreed to jump in the cohost chair, and we think you'll enjoy her style :) This is the Season 7 Premiere episode, and we decided to talk about a topic that we had covered a while back, which is none other than the folk legend of the Lechuza. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's basically the owl animal form of a witch in Hispanic folklore. We covered its origins more in depth in Episode 38, but for this occasion, both of us share some stories that happened to us and people we know that have to do with the Lechuza. For the second part of the episode, Mariah talks about her journey as a horror content creator and a few other things. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jmv125150/message

The legend of Lechuza centers around a woman who was murdered for practicing the devil's magic. Not long after her death, the witch returned as a shapeshifter who can appear as a seven foot tall owl with a fifteen foot wingspan or even as a normal woman. She is even described in some accounts as a giant owl with the face of a woman and whose call is rumored to be a death omen. Will Harlem and Salem hear her cry? Join the boys as they investigate to find out if Lechuza is in fact paranormal, or something you need to be drunk to believe in!

Prowling the night for human prey. Lechuza will lure you outside to become her dinner!
Welcome back to The Freaky Deaky! Today the gang tackles the eerily spooky legend of Le Lechuza Bruja, the Owl Witch of Mexican/Hispanic folklore, as well as other examples of half woman / half bird hybrids found throughout history. Lechuza are either shape-shifting witches or spirits in Hispanic folklore. Tales of Lechuza are quite popular in Mexico and Texas. A human-sized bird with a woman's face, Lechuza are women who have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for magical powers. At night, they transform into monsters with a bird's body and a woman's face, similar to depictions of harpies in Greek mythology. They then fly through the night in search of prey. When a Lechuza finds her target she will perch in a location where she can't easily be seen and then will make either strange whistles or the sound of an infant crying. Anyone who attempts to determine where the sound is coming from is at risk of becoming Lechuza's dinner. Lechuza will then swoop down and carry off the confused and horrified individual. In some versions of the story, the Lechuza is the spirit of a witch who was murdered by locals. Her spirit returns in the form of the bird-monster to get revenge. In other tales, the Lechuza is the vengeful spirit of a woman who has returned from the grave to torment the living and to seek revenge.
