You go Glen Coco! The Legendary Ladies are back to chat about the new Mean Girls (2024) movie (/musical/adaptation/not-adaption?). Amy, Kat, and Morgan, all of whom are *well* acquainted with the original 2004 version, break down what worked and what didn't in this movie based on a musical based on a movie based on a book. They discussed whether the updated "tech" of the tiktok age helped the movie, or if it was actually too muted to be realistic, how the lack of Cady's internal monologue changed your fundamental perspective on the main character, and whether or not the queer aspects of the film were prevalent and poignant enough for the hype from the press tour. We're diving into the beloved and infinitely quotable High School comedy Mean Girls, including bullying, anthropological studies, fashion, downtown Africa, wearing pink on Wednesdays, and we discuss if the film falls into the trap of becoming that which it satirizes. You go Glen Coco! Mean Girls is a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters, written by Tina Fey, and starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried (in her film acting debut), Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler and Fey. The supporting cast includes Lizzy Caplan, Jonathan Bennett, Daniel Franzese and Neil Flynn. The screenplay is based in part on Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes, which describes female high school social cliques, school bullying and the damaging effect they can have on teenagers. Fey also drew from her own experience at Upper Darby High School as an inspiration for some of the concepts in the film.[3] The plot centers on naïve teenage girl Cady Heron (Lohan) navigating her way through the social hierarchy of a modern American high school after years of her parents homeschooling her while conducting research in Africa. Cady is new and still finding her way in high school. Laura Marie has a confession: this recording is the first time she had ever seen Mean Girls all the way through AND not edited for tv. She's ashamed. Jessica Marie saw this movie in the theater and, rightly so, has been obsessed ever since. While the entire movie is a meme, is quotable, and unforgettable, you might be surprised how much was taken out for TV and how much ick there is. There's a bit more homophobia, fat shaming, and sexism than we all remembered which is unfortunate. What isn't unfortunate is that this movie stays relevant every October, every time we hear Jingle Bell Rock, every time someone gives a compliment, and every time we remember what high school Valentine's Day was like. You go Glen Coco. Kiss On Both Cheeks Grab some ribs, hop in your car, and throw on the latest Pod Yourself A Gun. Matt and Vince are joined by comedian, writer, professor, and weiner dog enthusiast Amy Silverberg to discuss The Sopranos season 6a episode 6 “Live Free or Die.” This is the episode where everyone finds out Vito's secret. The boys at the Bada Bing are mortified to hear from Finn that Vito has been on the receiving end of at least one penile encounter. As you can imagine, there is not a lot of acceptance among the wiseguys, which has Amy wondering if the younger mafia guys in 2021 are more open. According to her students, if you're not bi, you're a loser. Maybe today's gangsters have progressed, but as far as Tony's concerned, absolutely no gay stuff, unless you're in prison for a while. That's different. We also meet Johnny Cakes for the first time. Go ahead and let out a big sigh while you stare at his potent mustache and think about that life you could have lived in a little town in Vermont if you weren't such a good earner. The most iconic of them all. IYKYK. This movie actually shaped our generation and we quote it enough to prove this as a fact. On today's BONUS episode the girls break down the one and only: Mean Girls. We dive into why Tina Fey is a genius, what we really think of Aaron Samuels, how Janis is the low-key hero of the movie and why we think Mean Girls turned into the phenomenon that it is! So much Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan talk to details of tiny Louis V bags, army pants + flip flops and Glen Coco. Hello, Lovelies! Tiffany has an incredible story for you this week. After being told that his medical exams could wait and that the war effort needed him, Eugene Lazowski was promoted to Second Lieutenant and became a military doctor for Poland during World War II. After narrowly avoiding death many, many times, he reunited and married his long lost love, Murka Tolwinska, after Poland had surrendered. He quickly took it upon himself to help his fellow countrymen and the country he loves, a fact that eventually led him to joining The Resistance. After having a run-in with the Gestapo, he loosened a few boards in his backyard fence with the idea that it would serve as an escape route if needed. Instead, it opened up a portal to the Rozwadów Ghetto, allowing the Jewish who lived there to receive medical treatment from Lazowski. Part of Lazowski's job involved sending lab results to a German lab, a process that sometimes took weeks. Eventually, he hatched a plan with Stasiek Matulewicz that cleverly faked lab results to show a typhus outbreak. (And it's any reason we gave Eugene the Glen Coco award this episode?) Join us as Ashley and Rebecca learn about this incredible doctor and all he did for his community and country, all to annoy those pesky Germans This week's drink break is brought to you by The Goth Librarian Podcast! Can you believe that it's been fifteen years since Tina Fey's first screenplay, Mean Girls hit theaters? Fifteen years since the world was first introduced to Cady Heron and Regina George. It's been fifteen years since Gretchen Wieners tried to make "fetch" happen. It didn't happen. (At least I don't think it happened.) And it's been fifteen years since Glen Coco received four candy canes!Mean Girls is a timeless film. There's really no other way to describe it. It's timeless, not because it reminds us of better times, but because it reminds us of real times. Everybody can relate to something in this movie. We all knew a Regina George; "the Plastics" were in each of our schools. Heck, they may even be in our offices today. The situations are real. Even as horrible and as awkward as they are, we've all been there, or at least we know someone who has. We have all lived it.Mean Girls is a piece of each of us which is why it is so universally loved. It is also why it's the next movie that Val, Tracy, and Jake discuss. Listen as they talk about why believe that it holds up after a decade and a half. They also share some of their favorite quotes and scenes. There is a lot of laughter and fun involved. Only listen if you're prepared to enjoy yourself. Do you have any thoughts about Mean Girls that you want to share with us? What about any other feedback or maybe there is a movie you would like us to discuss on an upcoming episode? Let us know at podcast@moviesthatmakeus.com. Building a business empire that lasts more than 100 years beyond its inception is no easy task. The road is even tougher if you’re an orphaned girl in early 1900’s France. The name Chanel, however, lives on. It’s a story of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds through seduction, resiliency, and little white lies. Throughout history there are countless examples of people using brute strength to win a battle. There is only one who did it in a little black dress. This is the story of Coco Chanel

Third in our six-episode theme-song series is 2004's Mean Girls. Joining us in this almost completely on topic, never meandering discussion is Vanessa Riley of the Square Roots podcast. I know you expect me to now work in some memorable lines from the film, but relax Glen CoCo, we do that plenty in the episode.
