Breaking Free - A Body, Mind, Spirit Approach to Mental Health

In this episode I invited Heidi Tucker, an award winning author and motivational speaker, to bravely share her own growth work around her chronic illness struggle with vertigo. Heidi humbly and vulnerably allows me to guide her through concepts of how life gives us opportunities for our personal evolution through what we call "soul lessons." In this episode Heidi shares with us smack in the middle of her own personal evolution and grappling to move forward with the same courage and strength that she has made such a study in her speaking and writing career. Heidi's stories focus on the descending and ascending process of inspiring others whom she interviews and gives a voice, however in this interview Heidi shares her own battle with chronic illness, trauma, and how she is learning to rise and apply all she teaches to her own current struggle. Heidi shares how time in nature, learning to be present, and surrendering "the list" have been key lessons in stepping into greater balance. Heidi acknowledges how her best intentions allowed her to miss signs she needed to balance self-care with service and moving forward she hopes to apply her "soul lessons" in balance and continue to expand in her capacity to fulfill her soul's purpose. I personally was humbled by her willingness to try this unique podcast style of doing "the work" while recording for all to learn through the experience of this wise soul. This is such a classic example of who Heidi is, someone who desires to use all of her talents, gifts, and even struggles to lift others. You won't want to miss this one!

Roadtrip! (0:00:00)With summer coming up, a lot of us are probably thinking that a road trip might be the way to go. But there are so many places we can drive to, how do we know which place will be the most fun for our family? Well, as part of Lisa's Adventure Club, we wanted to give you some destination ideas to help you plan your next road trip. Joe Yogerst is a writer for National Geographic and author of “100 Drives, 5,000 Ideas.” He has a lot of great ideas, so we invited him on the show today to share his tips and tricks.  Learning from the Hard Parts of History (0:13:33)You've probably heard the saying that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. But how do you teach your kids about past events that still make you cringe... like the slave trade, Native American persecution, or the Holocaust? These stories still make us uncomfortable, and we wish we didn't have to tell our kids about the dark side of humanity. But by teaching them where our ancestors went wrong, then hopefully they can do better and avoid the same mistakes. With us today to address the importance of learning about the hard parts of history is professor of history Matthew Mason.  Finding Hope (0:32:54)Despite all the hard things going on in my own life, I try to be as hopeful and positive as I possibly can, because that's the kind of person I want to be. But that's not easy for everyone. And sometimes I even struggle with it. So, when life is less than ideal, which it is for all of us at one time or another, what do we do? Well we invited Heidi Tucker, a speaker and author who has written books about rising from tragedy and finding hope, on the show today to talk about how to find hope when the tough times strike.  Eco Friendly Lawn Care (0:50:39)It's a part of the American Dream to have that perfect front lawn and white picket fence. But when that lawn requires excessive watering and harmful chemicals, they can cause some serious harm to the environment. So, what are the eco-friendly options for lawn care? Here to share some ideas with us is Linda Ly, founder of the popular home and gardening site Garden Betty.  Mini Book Club: Goodreads Award Winners (1:05:00)Rachel Wadham , of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting , talks with Lisa and Richie about the best books to read that were Goodreads Award Winners this year.  Pet Adoption (1:25:06)Did you know that approximately 6.5 million dogs and cats are put in shelters every year? If you're an animal lover, that high number can really pull at your heart strings. With April 30th being national pet adoption day, we thought we'd talk about what makes adopting from animal shelters a great choice for those looking to add a furry friend to their family. Here to tell us all about pet adoption is Deann Shepard. Deann is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Humane Society of Utah.

This journey led to personal revelation to write a book called ‘Finding Hope in the Journey.’ Heidi’s book is designed to give hope when difficult things happen in our lives of which many are outside of our control. She shares principles and perspectives to give us all better tools. Heidi is now a frequent speaker at LDS events (over 100 events) and has written a second book called ‘Servie’s Song.’ Heidi’s books can be found at Deseret Book, Amazon or at her website https://www.thepickledsunflower.com/. You can also reach Heidi through this website. Thank you Heidi for bravely sharing some of your family story. The principals and perspective you teach as part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ are helping all of us have more hope, perspective and healing. Thanks for being on the podcast and all your great work!

My guest in episode 56 is Heidi Tucker. Heidi is a wife, a mom to four adult children and a grandma to 9 grandchildren. She is the author of two books, Finding Hope in the Journey and Servie’s Song. Heidi is known as a great storyteller who believes every story not only teaches a gospel principle but can make you feel it. In the interview Heidi shares how she knew through a dream she needed to write a book even though she was going through one of the lowest times of her life. We discussed how you don’t have to be in an ideal time in your life to do His work. God can use you if you take a step and act. She shares how God answered a prayer through a total stranger she encountered on a hike who said just three words to her, “Go get ’em.” As a mom who has raised her children, Heidi discussed several perspectives and insights she has gained in motherhood. She talked why rescuing children at every turn erases the child’s growth, why lectures aren’t effective and how to pick your battles. Heidi also shared her perspective on how to deal with children who have struggles and questions about faith and God. She speaks to what she has personally done and learned in these situations and gives practical advice to other mothers struggling with children choosing a different path. At the end, Heidi shares how a swarm of butterflies taught her God is aware of her. Heidi has seen and felt Him as her partner as she has acted on the quiet thoughts He has given her.   Show Notes Follow Heidi Instagram: @heidi_tucker_ Facebook: Heidi Tucker Website: thepickledsunflower.com Heidi and I will both be speaking at the Moms Who Stick Together Conference coming up on August 16th and 17th in Mesa, Arizona. "Life is noisy, and crazy, and disruptive." Amen, sister! So how can we find hints from our Creator that we aren't here alone amidst all the distractions?  Especially when we are facing trials we never expected to? Heidi Tucker was a brand new empty-nester looking for her place.  After hitting a series of dead-ends and an early return of her missionary son, Heidi wondered how God was possibly involved in her life.   But the hope came.  And it came in ways that took time and practice for Heidi to recognize. Heidi is on the show to share how you can see the signs of God's involvement in your life--especially if you're someone like me who struggles to recognize that.  If you have a hard time figuring out how to connect with your higher power and are in desperate need of hope, this episode is a MUST-LISTEN and will give you real steps to find it in your own life!   Show Notes: Heidi's website and books: Finding Hope in the Journey, and Servie's Song Progress Program!!! Doors for application are open for just a few more weeks Contact Monica for podcast consultingand Progress Coaching Song Credit: "Sweet Promise" and "Warm Lights" by Nicolai Heidlas

Heidi is known as a great storyteller who believes that every story not only teaches a gospel principle, but can make you feel it. She has inspired many to rise up, cling to their faith and position their hearts to recognize God’s hand in their life. Heidi Tucker won a 2018 Illumination Book Award for her new release Servie’s Song. She also won a similar award for her first inspirational book Finding Hope in the Journey in 2017.   When Heidi isn’t writing her next book, or speaking at a conference, you’ll find her spending time outdoors with her husband, four grown children and eight grandchildren. She loves sunflowers, hiking and ice cream … not necessarily in that order.   Here are some key points of our discussion: Heidi talked about her family and her journey as a mother. Originally a business major, she tells how she was led to the surprising decision to write books. We discussed why and how Heidi compares life to a culmination of hikes, and how this analogy is helpful to mothers and fathers in their own journeys. Heidi discussed some of the trials she has had in her own life and how she has discovered that there is always hope in every journey. She discussed the patterns of behavior we need to follow to be able to see the hope that is there. We discussed the link between knowing about our heritage and receiving an increase of hope in our own circumstances. Heidi told the story of how she came to write the book Servie’s Song, the true story of one mother living in Zimbabwe.  Servie's Song takes you on an emotional journey of tragedy and heartbreak to an inspiring path of hope.   Mom Squad Challenge:  Better your communication with God.  Find a space that you can dedicate to opening yourself up to two-way communication with Him.   You can find out more about Heidi at www.thepickledsunflower.com

Heidi Tucker:       03:44          Very good to be here. Thank you. Kurt Francom:       03:47          You're from Cave Creek Arizona. Remind me where that is again? Heidi Tucker:       03:52          That is on the north east corner of Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Kurt Francom:       03:55          Nice and you're visiting some grand kids and children here? Heidi Tucker:       04:00          They all went to college in Utah and never came back. Kurt Francom:       04:04          Wow. So you have to come visit? Heidi Tucker:       04:05          I have to be here every opportunity I get.  And so we organized. My parents home was available and here we are in a nice air conditioned home. Are you to record and learn about you so you are the author of "Finding Hope in the Journey." Yes. Now I know from personal experience you don't accidentally write a book. So tell us how did this book come to be. Kurt Francom:       04:24          Well we have to go back a few years. I was actually in a really difficult time. I had just turned 50. My fourth child was ready to leave the nest and I knew from three these three before her right that she's not coming back. So I know I'm going to be an empty nester. I was in my fourth year of teaching .early morning seminary. So four years of getting up at 4:30 every morning to be at the church by 5:30 to teach at 6:00 that had taken its toll.
