Witness Wednesday #122 More PopWe Stories (Anxiety/Depression)Today's witnesses are from Matthew West's website called popwe.org. If you don't know who Matthew West is, he is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. This website is for the non-profit that he has with his father, a pastor. Matthew and his father encourage people to share their stories. They have various categories of stories. Today, I chose three testimonies from the Anxiety/Depression Category. I know so many people who are struggling with anxiety and depression right now. Suicide seems like it is increasing as well. Often, we can hear our own story in someone else's story. When we listen to others tell their story, it helps us see that we are not alone. When we hear how God worked in their situation, it gives us hope that He will work in ours, too! I pray when you hear these testimonies, you get the faith and hope to believe that miracles can happen in your situation also. I pray you know that God is there with you, and if you invite Him into your anxiety and depression, He can help.Jenna: I grew up in a Christian family. We went to church every Sunday and Wednesday and were a part of almost everything; Awana, Elevate teen group, and even school there. Two and a half years ago, I lost someone who I was close to because she felt the need to commit suicide. I was heartbroken and I felt like I lost everything. 2022 was a challenging year for me. I had daily panic attacks and felt like I was worthless. My eating habits went down significantly, and I was stressed all the time. As exams neared, I was super stressed and ended up passing out.Months passed and I still felt worthless. I planned to commit suicide when I got a text from a friend, and it was like a text from God. She said she heard I was going to camp and hoped to see me there. I thought if I waited til after camp, and then committed suicide it would be okay. So I went to camp and it changed my life. I met so many new people and was able to share my hurt with my church and they told me that I was not alone. Camp was my blue couch moment as I sat there in service Thursday night, I realized that I needed God in my life more than ever. I had already been saved, but I realized I hadn't been living like Christ wanted me to.Around late February early March, my friend introduced me to someone…we immediately hit it off and became great friends. A month or two later, it was revealed that he liked me. We started dating in June and have been together ever since. I tell you that little story because sometimes when you need it most, God has someone in mind who will help you grow in faith and support you through it all. They can also help you overcome the hardships in your life.I still deal with anxiety and eating habits, but they have gotten so much better since camp and I am so thankful for all that my church has done for me. Also, I have my three closest friends with me right by my side and the Lord has blessed me with an amazing boyfriend who I love and who has helped me through a lot.GOD'S NOT DONE WITH YOU OR YOUR STORY! HE STILL CARES A LOT AND WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU. YOU HAVE A PURPOSE – TURN TO GOD TO FIND THAT PURPOSE AND YOU WILL BE FOUND.Brianna: From the age of 10, I was stuck with the label “child prodigy,” winning piano competitions, featured in local newspapers, and recognized as a passionate, fiery recitalist. Yet, even as a youth, I was severely depressed. I was insecure, seeking affection, and perpetually in pursuit of attaining “good enough.” Right before my 16th birthday, my world suddenly turned upside down. In an unexpected turn of events, I faced a close encounter with death, had my innocence taken, and watched helplessly as my mother's health began to rapidly fail. Too ashamed to ask for help and blaming myself for the situation, I despairingly turned to self-harm, eating disorders, and eventually, planned my own suicide. One day, I heard the song ‘Broken Pieces', and I found something onto which I could cling to – Truth, even when I could not feel it and it failed to make sense.Through involvement with an organization called Csehy Summer School of Music, I came to personally know Christ. For the first time in my life, I experienced peace, hope, and true joy. Dedicating my life to God, I went back home with a different perspective. My life was still intense – balancing high school and conservatory studies, living between home and the hospital, while being a full-time caretaker for my undiagnosed mother. By the grace of God, I managed to graduate as Salutatorian and get accepted into music school. However, shortly before college began, my mother passed away.I started my B.A. in piano at Charleston Southern University, using every spare moment to pour my heart out into the keys as a wordless prayer. Yet, a lingering pain in my right hand soon became constant. A few months after my mother's funeral, I was diagnosed with severe damage in my right hand, incited by the physical strains from being a caretaker. The only option left was surgery, followed by excruciating therapy, without guarantee of returning to the keys. My doctor strongly advised me to quit and choose a different career path. But I fought back.Over the next several years, I fought through recovery – from both surgical and emotional scars. I realized that though I had given my life to Christ, I hadn't fully “surrendered” it. In those precious years of undergrad, I experienced the freedom found in surrendering to the grace of God, the beauty of vulnerability, and the power of learning to fly again. Then, nearly four years to the day the doctor said it was over, I found myself sitting onstage, performing at Carnegie Hall. When I turned to the audience to see a standing ovation, I burst into tears, because I remembered the words, “With You I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall.”-Psalm 18:29Today, despite the formalities infused in classical music, I get to use the concert stage as a platform to share my story and encourage others to seek help and experience the peace of God. I perform and travel internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, frequently being sought after to premiere avant-garde piano works, and I am actively involved in youth and collegiate ministry. Although healing is an ongoing process, by the hand of God's work in my life, the label of “Victim” has been replaced with “Victorious,” “Hopeless” has been covered by “Confidence,” and what was “Impossible” is now a living, breathing, walking “Miracle.”Bubby: Hey, I just wanted to thank Matthew for his book, “Hello My Name Is” and for all he does for us! I've met him a handful of times and he is such an awesome child of God. On page 58, I believe, he talks about the story of the 11-year-old who asked for the hug and shared about his anxiety. It took me back to my childhood. I didn't come to faith until I was 14. A man!! (Lol. I thought…) But I can remember being 5-10 and suffering through anxiety and panic issues every night and throughout the day. I won't go into it, but it was messed up. Family life was messed up. When I read how this little boy thinking of God holding him when listening to Matt's song, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm 58 and still have memories of my childhood that can hurt if I dwell in them, but I very seldom do…only when things like reading or seeing or hearing someone else's experiences. I looked back at how God was there for me all along even though I was not His child yet. His love is so totally encompassing!! It fills every void in my soul. At 12 I was prescribed some medicine that helped, but it was addictive, and when my mom took me off them abruptly, I turned to drinking and drugging heavier then I had already started a year or so earlier. It was a long road I went through, but thank God, I will have 19 years of sobriety this month. My name is “Saved,” in so many ways.Thank you all for sharing your stories with the world. It can be hard to be vulnerable and talk about the hard things we have gone through.Yet when you are brave and do it even when its hard then we help others who are suffering know that it is ok for them to talk about it too! More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

There's a shortage of truth in the world today. Of course, the definition of truth seems to be up for grabs for some, but today we're talking about sincerity in action without pretense. Matthew West sings about this in his song "Truth Be Told." Jesus teaches about it in the Gospel of Matthew. Spend some time this week examining the words of Jesus with an open heart. In this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Consider the historical background Follow the cross-references Utilize a trusted outside resource (like a commentary or Study Bible) Read in context Summarize the text in your own words Ask questions of the text Remember, the people in the Bible were real The 30 Day Music Challenge - ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE HERE Matthew West's story behind the song - YouTube Video The book Matthew West wrote that he mentioned in the video - "Hello My Name Is" by Matthew West The verse in Isaiah Matthew West refers to in the video - Isaiah 29:13 How Jesus uses two metaphors to talk about what He thinks of being clean, put together, and FINE only on the outside - Matthew 23:27-28 The historical context of why touching tombs would have been a big deal to Christ's audience - Numbers 19:16 Why it was their practice to whitewash tombs - Douglas Sean O'Donnell "Preaching The Word" Commentary on Matthew Really considering the root of what Jesus is teaching and how it may apply to our own "clean on the outside and a hot mess on the inside" moments Zooming out all the way to Matthew 21 to see the context of our focus teaching Summarizing Matthew 23:1-11 in our own words Recognizing the seven "woe"s in Matthew 23 Checking out another "woe" from the Old Testament - Hosea 7:13 Hearing the "rolling thunder of Christ's wrath" in the text Recognizing the hypocrisy in our own lives and treating it with the weight Christ demands Make no mistake. I don't think Jesus is going to give us a pass on what He is distinctly declaring as worthy of woe and judgment just because we're not a Scribe or a Pharisee. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

There's a shortage of truth in the world today. Of course, the definition of truth seems to up for grabs for some, but today we're talking about sincerity in action without pretense. Matthew West sings about this in his song "Truth Be Told." Jesus teaches about it in the Gospel of Matthew. Spend some time this week examining the words of Jesus with an open heart. In this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Consider the historical background Follow the cross-references Utilize a trusted outside resource (like a commentary or Study Bible) Read in context Summarize the text in your own words Ask questions of the text Remember, the people in the Bible were real The 30 Day Music Challenge - ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE HERE Matthew West's story behind the song - YouTube Video The book Matthew West wrote that he mentioned in the video - "Hello My Name Is" by Matthew West The verse in Isaiah Matthew West refers to in the video - Isaiah 29:13 How Jesus uses two metaphors to talk about what He thinks of being clean, put together, and FINE only on the outside - Matthew 23:27-28 The historical context of why touching tombs would have been a big deal to Christ's audience - Numbers 19:16 Why it was their practice to whitewash tombs - Douglas Sean O'Donnell "Preaching The Word" Commentary on Matthew Really considering the root of what Jesus is teaching and how it may apply to our own "clean on the outside and a hot mess on the inside" moments Zooming out all the way to Matthew 21 to see the context of our focus teaching Summarizing Matthew 23:1-11 in our own words Recognizing the seven "woe"s in Matthew 23 Checking out another "woe" from the Old Testament - Hosea 7:13 Hearing the "rolling thunder of Christ's wrath" in the text Recognizing the hypocrisy in our own lives and treating it with the weight Christ demands Additional Resources Matthew West makes the case for honesty - KLove Blog Lyrics - WGBL.org "Truth Be Told" by Matthew West Story Behind the Song - YouTube Article on the seven "woe"s in Matthew 23 - GotQuestions.org Article on what "woe" means in Scripture - Patheos.com Commentary on the book of Matthew - Amazon.com Weekly Challenge Read Matthew 21-25 to understand the complete context of Jesus' teaching. Focus in on Matthew 23 and really study it (I've included resources I used "Additional Resources" above). Identify and write down summaries of the seven woes. The 5-time Grammy nominee, Matthew West, is hitting the reset button! He has found himself in a brand new season of leadership to younger artists and producers and a flood of productivity after a self-described “desert season” that has finally come to an end. With a whole new attitude and new young producers, Matthew has crafted a fresh sound on his new album, Brand New, co-produced with 20-something producer/keyboardist A.J. Pruis. Along with a new podcast, there’s a new studio, and his brand new Story House Music record label with Provident Label Group If you’ve been a Matthew West fan in the past with songs like “Hello My Name Is,” “Do Something,” “Grace Wins,” “Mended,” and his early 2020 Covid-inspired hit single, “Take Heart,” you’ll love this up-close-and-personal interview with show host John Chisum. John digs into what’s most important to Matthew at this point in his long career and how he’s paying it forward by encouraging and mentoring a younger generation. Matthew shares candidly about the moment he realized that his story wasn’t as important, or as interesting, as the thousands of tragic stories his fans were sharing with him and how he’s turning the microphone around to the crowd more than ever through his ministry called “popwe nation.” You can find a lot more information at matthewwest.com and follow Matthew on all social media platforms. It is very honest and raw and I definitely think that her readers will connect as a result. Also, be prepared to WORK because the tips that she shares are very practical but also make you dig deeper. If you are ready and willing to do your work, this book will give you the tools to go there. am sharing my story in an effort to encourage and inspire someone else who may have walked or be walking a similar journey...When I first embarked upon the journey of starting my first business, Temple Body Fitness, I had a business partner and a lot of dreams. We had the common goal of helping people lose weight and live healthier lives. We struggled through the first few months building our clientele and our reputation. We grew through word of mouth from our satisfied clients. It was a great feeling, unlike any I had ever experienced before. I knew that I was doing what I was created to do, help people and make an impact on their lives. I was pursuing my degree, and had started my women's group Hadassah's Retreat. I was finding myself on my own personal spiritual journey and was beginning to feel as if my life was good and going in the direction I wanted... I was finding my purpose. At first it felt like I started down this spiral...I found out my partner was being "unprofessional" and having a personal relationship with a client.I dissolved the partnership & set out to rebuild my business.I was in two car accidents two weeks apart, neither one was my fault, go figure, lol! Then one day, it seemed as if my whole world began to crash, literally. Initially after the accidents I had the customary aches and pains but assumed that they would go away after a few weeks. I began seeing a chiropractor the week after the accident and thought that soon enough I would be back up and at it again, being the strong woman I was used to being. That was not been the case. After the first few weeks of treatment I was relieved of some of the pain, but that was short lived. My Chiropractor began questioning why I would experience relief for a few days and then spiral back into a pattern of pain. I experienced excruciating neck and back pain, indescribable migraines, intense aches in my joints, my ribs kept popping out of place, and numbness in my hands and feet just to list a few things. I kept trying to push forward thinking that I would be okay and it would go away after my body adjusted and bounced back from the trauma of the car accidents.Again, this was not the case. Instead of getting better I kept getting worse. By March 2006 I had an upset stomach all the time and migraines everyday. I started experiencing mood swings that I couldn’t explain. I had a hard time remembering things. I was lucky if I got four hours of sleep a night. The numbness and tingling in my hands and feet got worse. I started struggling with depression and anxiety. The joy of finding my purpose was gone, replaced by anger at what was happening..."Next thing I knew, they were picking me up of the floor"By June 2006 I was struggling to sit through classes for a few hours a day. By this point i had done an MRI that showed damage to my vertebrae in my neck and lower back and diagnosed me with Degenerative Disk Disease. Then, in August 24, 2006, my body crashed because it couldn’t take anymore.I went to class one day and everyone kept asking if I was okay because I was walking sideways and looked as if I were in pain. I kept saying yes, trying to keep up a good front. I thought after class was over I would go home, lie down and rest. Again, this was not the case. I was in the middle of a conversation with a fellow classmate when all of a sudden I felt as if I were in a tunnel. His voice started fading out and getting farther and farther away. I was looking at him but it seemed as if this black cloud was moving in front of my face and blocking out everything else.Next thing I knew, they were picking me up of the floor. I had collapsed and my entire body had begun to convulse. Because God is so awesome, a friend of mine at the time was a former Nurse, Fire Fighter/Paramedic and Army Medic and was able to help me during that situation. After about 45 minutes the spasms stopped and I thought wow I must really be tired and went home to lay down... I thought maybe I just needed a few days rest. This was on a Thursday so I figured Id just sit still that weekend and my body would find its balance. I thought by Monday Id be back in class and feeling better.LOL!!! How wrong I was?!By that Sunday night I was feeling even worse, and finally had to go to the emergency room that Monday. I had a constant headache, was having constant spasms and convulsions and my hands and feet kept going numb and I was starting to have nerve irritation. I had the unfortunate experience of being assigned to an ER doctor that had never seen a case like mine and he tried to convince me that I was crazy and needed to have a psych evaluation. I left the hospital feeling even worse mentally and physically than I had before I'd gotten there. All they had done was to tell me it might be a neurological problem and given me morphine to stop the constant spasms and ease the pain.Over the next few weeks I continued to get progressively worse: I had constant muscle spasms in my back, chest, neck and right arm (the longer they lasted, they spread to my whole body) Every time the barometric pressure (atmospheric pressure) changed I would get an excruciating migraine Frequent numbness and tingling sensations in my arm, hands, legs and feet Constant joint pain Extreme sensitivity to any sensory input (light, sound, touch, etc.) My nervous system was totally confused and there were times when I couldn’t go to sleep for 3-4 days at a time, then other days when I couldn’t stay awake Constant mood swings and panic/anxiety attacks

EPISODE 132 JERRY ROYCE LIVE! 5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, June 19, 2014Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: Hello My Name Is... Forgiven (Kindle Edition)What I love is that Ms Balom really bears her soul as she shares her own story/ journey towards forgiveness. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Matthew West's song, "Hello My Name Is", is the inspiration this week to spend some time in the Book of Ruth learning of a gal who changed her name from "pleasantness" to "bitter". We also can't excape the truth of 1 John 3:1, our memory verse this week, that reminds us of the name God gave us.

Dating would be so much easier if everyone would simply pick up a package of "Hello My Name Is..." stickers and add all the attributes their future exes need to know. Would it kill you to just let everyone know up front that you're a stalker, that you're clingy and smothering, that you like sex on the first date, that you have mother issues or crazy exes still in your life? If you give great orgasms...don't forget to add that helpful piece of info, too.
