“I said, ‘The best thing for me right now is to just choose life, and to step away.'” Tomorrow, Robyn Stevens will make her Olympic debut, representing Team USA in the 20K race walk. In June, Robyn won her event at the Olympic Track & Field Trials, officially becoming the fastest female walker in the country. And on this episode, she talks about the long road to becoming an Olympian, which included a 17-year break and retirement from the sport to recover from a severe eating disorder. But now, "Walkin' Robyn" is healthy, cruising at a 7:40/mile pace, and becoming an Olympian at age 38. Plus, Robyn offers a bit of "Race Walk 101" (race walking: it's not just fast walking, it's definitely not slow running, and it comes with lots of rules and regulations!), and shares her excitement about getting to head to Tokyo to compete with her boyfriend, fellow race walk champion and Team USA member Nick Christie. Food freedom in quarantine: How Robyn became so satisfied with life she didn't need food to be happy After over 30 years of binge eating disorder Robyn is getting to truly enjoy her life. Even in the COVID-19 quarantine she went from a life where she would have binged all day long to being able to focus at home, do her work, and not even think about food. Robyn went though the darkness of the false hope and emotional roller coaster of weight loss programs to then feeling like she truly couldn't get past this problem with food. She couldn't deal with her emotions and felt like no one could understand just how bad it was. Now she celebrates how she went from lost to finding the way to deep and permanent freedom. She tells us “I am so satisfied with life that I don't need food to be happy” and how these tools have allowed her to deal with her emotions and take on life with a true joy and freedom she didn't know was possible. * Free Session to End Binge Eating [http://www.lydiawente.com/apply] Subscribe to this channel [http://bit.ly/1MVCqyc] Get your free eBook “How to Stop Binge Eating…and be successful at everything else” [http://www.LydiaWente.com] Facebook Support Group [https://www.facebook.com/groups/LydiaLifestyleCoach/] Like [http://www.facebook.com/LydiaLifestyleCoach] Website [http://www.LydiaWente.com] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/coachlydiaknight/] Twitter [https://twitter.com/LydiaWente] Pinterest [https://www.pinterest.com/LydiaWente/life-with-lydia/] For a free session with our team: http://www.LydiaLifestyle.com/session Disclaimer: Lifestyle coaching is not meant to be a substitute for clinical counseling, treatment for suicidal ideation, depression, eating disorder counseling, medical treatment, nutrition counseling, severe psychiatric problems or any other professional or certified counseling. We're so excited to welcome world-renowned Health Coach and Chewing Queen, Robyn Youkilis. As a former serial dieter herself, Robyn struggled with binge eating, weight, and poor body image her entire life. One day, she decided enough was enough and enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Health to become a Health Coach. Little did she know that nutrition would become her soul's calling. There, Robyn channeled her love of food and cooking into food and lifestyle tools that empowered her as well as her future coaching clients to heal from the inside out, starting with the gut. As soon as her clients ate more mindfully and cleaned up their gut health, their psychological, social and spiritual lives also improved. As Robyn poignantly said, “A powerfully functioning gut relates to a powerful gut instinct.”   When we're in a constant state of anxiety, especially around food, we're not only holding onto emotions but also gripping our organs tightly, inhibiting them from executing their intended job. One of the ways we can release tension in the body and mind during mealtime is to chew slowly. Oftentimes, we chew three to five times per bite before swallowing, burdening our stomachs and digestive tract; instead, Robyn suggests that we chew until our saliva has had a chance to break down our food.   Robyn also recommends that we explore a gut reset cleanse to give our digestive system a chance to reset and repair, while simultaneously alleviating brain fog. Since 90% of serotonin - the brain's “happy” hormone – is created in our bellies, it's no surprise that our gut health directly relates to our psychological wellbeing. When the bacteria in our gut are happy, we're happy and healthy. It's as simple as that. We talk about: How Robyn found her soul's calling as Certified Health Coach and Gut Health Guru Why gut health is important How gut health affects your intuition Benefits of a gut reset cleanse for your body, mind and spirit Mindful eating practices we can all include to facilitate easier digestion, improve gut health and feel happier in every aspect of our lives Resources: https://www.robynyoukilis.com/ (WEBSITE) | INSTAGRAM Stay Up To Date: Follow @TheAlchemizedLife and https://www.instagram.com/avajohanna (@AvaJohanna) on Instagram https://www.avajohanna.com/sign-up (Subscribe to Newsletter) Visit AvaJohannna.com Sponsors: New Earth: Head to NaturesMultiVitamins.com and use code "ALCHEMIZED" for 10% your order. Robyn Hitchcock is unique by any estimation. It's not just his songwriting, lyrics, world view and effortless charisma... it's also that he's managed to release consistently solid music for decades, up through and beyond 2017's self-titled album. This is wholly anomalous in the industry. I mean, even the Stones crapped out after "Some Girls," and Bowie got kinda sketchy for a while after "Scary Monsters." Hitchcock has known no such hiccups. You know how every now and then you get lucky and have a conversation with someone who just “gets” you, your journey and how your brain works? Well, today’s guest, Robyn Youkilis checked that box. Growing up in a family that used food as a source of love, comfort and connection, I could completely relate. Don’t get me wrong this is a great thing, however the breaking point for Robyn (and myself) is when we started gaining weight and that warm, fuzzy connection went away and instead turned into a difficult connection.   Once she made this realization, Robyn set out to create a new conversation around food and weight. She didn’t want to view things as “good” or “bad,” rather she wanted to slow things down and figure out what foods would best support her body.   After much trial and error (that still happens on a daily basis), she now teaches others that it’s OK if you don’t have it all figured out – it may even take decades. It’s all about finding a formula that works for your body and adheres to what your intuition is telling you and keeps you in alignment. She also touches on how motherhood impacted her relationship with food and how it led to an impactful shift in her life then and now.   I had such a great time connecting with Robyn during this conversation. If you’re someone who struggles with your relationship with food, this episode is a must listen (and her book, Thin from Within, a must read).   --   Question Highlights: What is your life philosophy and how did you get to this place? What did the process of slowing down look for you? How has food become a foundation for everything you’re doing? What’s something in your life right now that you’re so excited about that you weren’t able to do before because food/body was taking up so much space in your brain? What is lighting you up the most right now? What is a question you wish more people would ask you? Do you have a secret dream that you envision for your future?   In This Episode We Talk about: Robyn’s relationship with food and how it changed at age 13 The emotional and physical weight of not living in alignment Food as an experience Robyn’s initial resistance with motherhood and how it was a major foundational shift for her How Robyn has learned to slow down, connect with her body and intuition and gut, teach from that place and “calm the eff down” How to connect with your body Setting intention behind activities to achieve alignment Finding your intuitive food voice Robyn’s power yogurt parfait and Rule of Five Plate The connection between your food/body and success in other areas of your life Rockstar Coaching Program Robyn’s new book, “Thin from Within” Why Robyn wants people to how she “does it all” And so much more…   Quotes   “You feel good when you're connected to other people.”   “My body is my home.”   “Let your own story and journey be what you want it to be and know that it’s OK.”   “Go with your gut.”   -- Robyn Youkilis is an AADP Certified Health Coach, author, speaker, and leading expert in holistic digestive health. For nearly a decade, Robyn has helped clients shed both physical and emotional weight with her straightforward yet supportive coaching style, Your Healthiest You. She is the author of the best-selling books, Go with Your Gut and Thin From Within - The Go with Your Gut Way to Lose Weight, and has been featured by The Cooking Channel, The View, The Today Show, The Wall Street Journal, Health, Mind Body Green, Well Good, The Chalkboard Mag and more. Robyn currently lives in New York City and Los Angeles with her husband and their daughter. She has been a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP) for nearly a decade and enjoys traveling, music festivals and eating dessert at fancy restaurants (one bite at a time, that is!). Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

Girls Make VR started by using virtual reality to solve TWO social problems. The first?  The underrepresentation of women in the tech field. And the second: the "divide" among us, in terms of education and future opportunities. Then, along the way, the program took on additional issues, such as poverty and homelessness. Georgia Van Cuylenburg is the Founder and Executive Director of  Los Angeles nonprofit Arts Bridging the Gap.  Arts Bridging the Gap's mission: the creation of top-quality arts programs for underserved youth. And one of those programs is Girls Make VR, for which Robyn Janz is Program Director. Girls Make VR, created in 2016 to educate young women from low-income areas, prepares them to be leaders in the tech field.  The program partners with top companies, including Samsung and the Entertainment Software Association. Since its inception as a workshop during VRLA 2016, Girls Make VR has expanded.  At the time of our interview, their after-school program was just about to wind up for the semester.   Robyn and Georgia had just taken some of their young students to VRLA 2018, for their third VRLA onsite workshop --and counting. And for Fall semester 2018, they're reaching out to other schools, to see where else their classes can get young women working on their future tech skills. During Day Two of VRLA 2018, Robyn and Georgia talked about Girls Make VR, their experiences as innovators and educators, and their goals for the future. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Georgia and Robyn first became inspired to make creative innovation their life's work; The story of the Girls Make VR program; How Georgia first came to start her nonprofit, Arts Bridging the Gap; The workings of a program which Arts Bridging the Gap devised, to create empathy between young people from both affluent and low-income backgrounds; How Robyn came aboard with Arts Bridging the Gap; Robyn's discovery of her VR calling through her professional background in a seemingly-different field; The landmark teaching experience that showed Robyn she was on the right path; How the Girls Make VR environment encourages participants to leave fear behind as they learn; A special invitation which Girls Make VR received (and which happened shortly after we recorded this podcast!); What students experience, in a Girls Make VR class session; How an exciting United Way partnership put the young students to work, addressing a current social crisis, while giving them a "work experience" that prepared them for the future; What's next, for the Girls Make VR program; What VRLA 2018 was like, for Robyn, Georgia and their Girls Make VR students; How to support Robyn and Georgia in all the amazing things they're doing!
