This week I spiraled out with wonderfully deep, refreshingly honest and truly hilarious writer, actor, comedian, musician AND podcaster Lane Moore! (Tinder Live, You Will Find Your People)  We talked shame and relational trauma, the damage done by unrealistic and grossly prescriptive self-help books, dealing with the incessant self-critical DJ playing the worst songs over and over in your head, making art from pain, the struggle to believe there's nothing wrong with you,  the difficulty of giving yourself the grace & compassion you freely give others, and SO MUCH MORE. Check out Lane's incredible podcast I Thought It Was Just Me, available exclusively on Patreon ( https://www.patreon.com/lanemoore) and buy her freaking amazing and relatable books: How To Be Alone and You Will Find Your People: How To Make Meaningful Friendships As An Adult.  You can follow Lane on Twitter, IG and TikTok @hellolanemoore and find all things Lane at lanemoore.org. She received her Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Brown is a professor at the University of Houston and holds the Huffington Foundation-Brené Brown Endowed Chair. She has studied vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy for the past two decades. Her former work includes other books related to the topic, such as I Thought It Was Just Me (2007) and The Gift of Imperfection (2010). Brown's TED Talks have been viewed over 40 million times, and Time magazine has named her one of the world's most influential thinkers. IntroductionDaring Greatly is a book by the researcher and thought leaderhttps://brenebrown.com/about/ ( Brené Brown). It offers a powerful new vision to provide readers with a powerful new concept. It encourages you to embrace vulnerability and imperfection greatly and live wholeheartedly. Vulnerability and shame are at the heart of Brown's research. We have to embrace vulnerability. In doing so, we should be happier. What's more, you should be able to forge great relationships with yourself and others.  Unfortunately, many people believe vulnerability is a sign of weakness and failure. They see shame as a direct consequence of vulnerability. Moving past this myth makes it easier for us to try new things. This could lead to new possibilities. Here are the ten key takeaways from Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. StoryShot #1: Seek a Wholehearted Life, Filled with Courage, Engagement, and Purpose. Wholeheartedness is ahttps://www.themarginalian.org/2010/11/08/brene-brown-tedx-houston/ ( feeling of worth,) even when you are essentially flawed. It means you focus your energy and attention on good qualities. Focus on what's going right, instead of shortcomings. In reality, many people end up with some notion regarding loving themselves. There's a lot in pop culture, including songs, all meant to encourage people to be easier on themselves. Still, we are more predisposed to taking a hard stance on ourselves. Daring Greatly shows that at the tenet of wholeheartedness are five ideals: All people need love and a sense of belonging. The feeling of not being worthy is central to the love we show ourselves. We build a sense of worthiness over time. How we perceive and react to our experiences informs it. We all want to live a life of courage, compassion, and connection at the core of our beings. And finally, as a wholehearted individual, use vulnerability as a catalyst. It should help you achieve courage, compassion, and connection. StoryShot #2: Vulnerability is Central to Meaningful Existence. When you don't allow yourself to be vulnerable, you shut yourself off from life's best. It would be best to look at vulnerability as engaging, playing a game, and choosing to rise to the challenge. You must be open to engaging even when you know there's the likelihood that you won't prevail. The willingness to engage is a measure of courage and clarity of purpose. Look at it this way. You showcase the fear and disconnection you feel by not embracing...

Do you wonder if you're crazy? Is there someone in your life that makes you question your sanity? Do you know someone who isn't treated well, but you can't put your finger on the issue? Maybe the problem is narcissism. I invite my friend Courtney Morlock to teach us how to spot a narcissist, how to deal with (or leave) one and how to love a friend who is entangled with one. No relationship is always perfect but if you find yourself confused, controlled or in constant chaos, listen in. You may also know someone whose relationship seems "off" and you don't know how to talk to them about it (or if you even should). You'll hear all this and more in this candid, vulnerable and practical chat with a life coach who has personal experience dealing with this type of complicated toxic relationship. Read more from Courtney: Throughout my life I've been drowning in narcissistic relationships; from boyfriends to bosses, it felt like I carried a big sign saying “narcissist come here!” After years of therapy and insanely intense life coaching, I now feel equipped to help you see what I now see. I'm not crazy. Sounds silly, but it's the core principle of everything I teach. If you can't see that with absolute confidence, you'll never be rid of these toxic relationships. You need a path to believe again (or for the first time) that you are already equipped with everything you need to change your life. I know, I haven't walked in your shoes, and I know that this relationship has made you believe you deserve this misery. But what if I told you I could help you see other shoes that don't cause so many blisters? You aren't crazy. You deserve a life of peace. You have options. Xx Courtney Find her on Instagram or Facebook. Lashes here, coaching here. Courtney is not a therapist, but you should see one if you are concerned you're dealing with a narcissist. As she said, avoid the rabbit hole of googling but do read these articles she recommends here. MORE resources in the full show notes. “The earth laughs in flowers.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Guest Introduction:   This is Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast episode 44. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today’s guest is Virginia Joy.  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Each week, join Cindy MacMillan as she interviews coaches, spiritual explorers and celebrants from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.   Virginia Joy is originally from New York. Born in Brooklyn and she knew as a kid she always wanted to help people. Virginia Joy’s interest in Aromatherapy began over 20 years ago…as many who seek alternative therapies. She began using essential oils for common ailments: headaches, colds and flu, and then found herself reaching for essential oils for many other issues in particular - addressing the emotions. This was back in 1983, and there really weren’t many resources to buy essential oils at all.   In 2010 Stillpoint Aromatics was formally birthed.  At Stillpoint Aromatics, she sources and imports over 400 essential oils and extracts! All of Stillpoint's oils are either certified organic, wild-harvested, unsprayed, biodynamically farmed with the rhythms of the earth and or vintage.  Here’s a glimpse of our conversation:  4:35 You know, it really was. It was really an organic journey and looking back, I think those journeys, the unplanned ones are the most rewarding and the most expansive. 6:15 It's a great question and there's a lot of confusion because essential oils are not flower essences and vice versa. 11:17 So even if somebody has, let's say, a back issue, there will always be a pain blend, so to speak for the back. But there's always another reason why that back is flaring. And that's where aromatherapy can add such a different dimension working on the psyche and on those patterns that cause the physical issue.  15:24 But for just grief in general, Melissa (Melissa officinalis) it's also lemon balm is one of the premier oils for shock and trauma. I have a psychiatrist friend that uses Melissa - keeps a couple of drops on a cotton ball in a plastic bag in his office - for when his patients either disassociate or are having a lot of trouble - to breathe that.  16:43 But people say what's your favorite oil? I have to tell you, that the aromas that help shift me are Coppertone or Chinese food. And that's because it reminds me of my mother.  23:00 So in the Metaphysics of Essential Oils class, we do a lot of work on applying the essential oils to the chakras, and to the energetic body, and also how the chakras and energetic body ties into the different physical ailments that we could have. And we also go deeply into the folklore and the history of how the ancients use those plants and trees.  27:52 My website is www.stillpointaromatics.com. I have a couple of Facebook pages: Stillpoint Aromatics, and I also admin, the Ethical Aromatherapy, and my metaphysical one is called the Stillpoint Mystery School, and that's on Facebook. I think it's Stillpoint Aroma on Twitter and then you could also just if you want to just text me, you could just text me directly. It's 928-301-8699. And so that way you could bypass the store.   Thanks for joining us this week on Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast.  Make sure to visit our website, CynthiaMacMillan.com, where you can subscribe to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify so you’ll never miss a show. Welcome to Season 3 of WYP! On today's episode, I share my story about how perfectionism has impacted me from childhood until now, how I realized I was a perfectionist and what that turning point looked like, and how I have learned to wreck my own perfectionism one baby step at a time by consistently doing things that scare the living SHIT out of me. Recording this episode included! As always, I want to hear from you on what you're struggling with and in what ways you need support so that I can show up for you in the best way possible. DM me @rachelle.lanae or @wreckyourperfection, or email me at rachelle@wreckyourperfection.com. I'd also love to hear your wins and find out how you're wrecking your perfection! If you want to hear more songs like the one at the end of the episode, you can check out my EP 'Taking Back Me' on Spotify/Apple Music. Some of my favorite resources that have helped me in my perfectionism recovery: Anything by Brene Brown (she has more but these are the ones I've read, some of them multiple times): The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Dare To Lead, and I Thought It Was Just Me. Also her Ted Talk on The Power of Vulnerability. Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. This one is awesome if you're looking to get more creativity into your life. Mindset by Carol Dweck. Consistently working to change from a fixed mindset into a growth mindset in all areas of life is, I believe, the work that us perfectionists have to do. Perfectionism and fixed mindset go hand-in-hand. Life Coaching. I was introduced to life coaching at a pivotal time a few years back, and it helped me transform in so many areas. I am now addicted to getting coaching because it's brought me to do things I never thought possible. There are tons of amazing life coaches out there, and I encourage you to find one who's a good fit for you. If you want to work with someone who can help you wreck your perfection, I'm also available as a certified professional coach. You can book a free consultation on my website. THERAPY. This is the big one, folks. If you have trauma of any kind, it's never too late to seek out help. As a perfectionist, it honestly took me until this year to even realize that I have anxiety, and that's a big part of how my perfectionism plays out. If therapy is not an option for you due to affordability, Open Path offers discounted rates ($30-60/hr). See you next week! Things happen fast on the interwebs these days kids. You might have only recently learned what intuitive eating actually means. In the course of that, you might have come across the terms “diet culture” and “anti-diet culture”. If you didn’t know what the former was, then you certainly weren’t aware of the definition or possibly even the existence of the latter. In this episode returning guest, Dr. Gabrielle Fundaro helps us understand the roots, definitions, misunderstandings of, and the arguments between these “camps”. As is often the case when people don’t see eye to eye, there is typically something lost in translation. In this episode, we wade into that gap with Dr. Fundaro, who’s been working to bridge it. She loves running, anything wellness related, spending quality time with family, and has a massive desire to help create and inspire change for the good in other people. Her saying that she reads every morning, to keep on the brightest side of life, is "When faced with 2 choices, what are you going to choose? The one that will hold you back another day, or the one that will propel you forward 5 days?" 5 days!" Michelle was a professional ballroom dancer before doTERRA and kids! Becoming a mom was full of changes and Michelle realized that she lost herself and is now on a journey of trying to regain her identity. About a year ago, Michelle began exercising and practicing self care. Michelle says that, “It’s a commitment even when it feels like you aren't getting anywhere". Michelle recommends making a list of things that you are struggling with and then tie that to what you are reading, viewing or things that you are taking in. Are your struggles tied to what you're letting into your mind and body? Commit to 30 mins a day of working out and also 30 mins of reading, whether that is a self-development or scripture reading. Also, be cautious what you are eating, and have healthy boundaries in other areas of your life as well. Essential oils are a huge staple in Michelle’s journey.  Life Long Vitality is a must for Michelle, Copaiba soft gels are also a daily must for Michelle. A blend that Michelle uses often is 10 drops hawaiian sandalwood, 10 drops balance, 10 drops of wild orange, 10 drops of siberian fir in a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil. Before you get started with today's episode, I just wanted to address the fact that we are going to be talking about religion today. Religion is usually something we stay clear of because this topic is quite triggering for us and other survivors of spiritual and religious abuse who are part of our community. This is why we ask our members to stay away from religious expression, unless… it is part of your story or experience. This request has led to quite a few questions, so… Today, we are talking about religious abuse and religious trauma syndrome. That means we are obviously talking about religion as part of our stories. >> Special Guest: Brady Hardin

This is my favorite episode of Selfie so far because 1) our conversation about pubic hair was so cringey and hilarious that my cheeks hurt from laughing, and 2) our conversation about detachment with Bj Hickman was full of life-giving lightbulb moments about relationships and detaching from people pleasing. In this episode we take a deep dive (ooph) into pubic hair and some of the challenges of hair removal in this delicate area, sharing our own experiences with lasers, waxing, shaving, trimming, and even Nair. We also chat with therapist B.J. Hickman about the psychological concept of detachment, and how we can care for others without losing ourselves. In this episode, we talked about: Kristen swears by this bikini trimmer gadget for bikini hair removal without the unsightly bumps of shaving. Brave enough to try waxing at home? This kit from Amazon has good reviews. Are you a good candidate for laser hair removal? Melody Beattie wrote the quintessential book on detachment called The Language of Letting Go. Brian Mayer discusses several area that contribute to the stigma of divorce.  There can be much shame and guilt when it comes to divorce and how we view ourselves.  We will talk about how being vulnerable is actually a good thing and can help reduce our shame.  We hope you enjoy today's message.  For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Brian discusses the direction of the show.  He plans to have all sorts of great topics and guests, including from a spiritual and a more scientific research based approach as well.   Shame is very prevalent issue when it comes to divorce.  It is a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.     Vulnerability is the greatest sign of courage according to Brene Brown.  It means putting yourself out there in spite of what happened in the past.  She also says it is the thing that fuels innovation, change, and creativity. Shame and Guilt are hard to eliminate completely.  The goal is should be to obtain power over but to not necessarily to try to make it vanish   Feelings of Failure - The ultimate feeling of failure was had by Princess Diana and Prince Charles who divorced after a true fairy tale wedding and marriage.  While they are royalty, they are after all humans who had an immense pressure on them to live that out.     Feeling Less Than You Are - The average time it takes to feel like ourselves again after a divorce is about 4 years.   Feeling Different is another reason that dealing with the stigma of divorce is hard.  It can be tough to live physically and mentally in a world that seems to cater more toward initial marriages and intact families.     Resources Mentioned Brene Brown TED Talk called “Listening to Shame”:   I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn't): Making the Journey from "What Will People Think?" to "I Am Enough" by Brene Brown Article:  How divorce still carries a stigma in the 21st century Thanks For Listening!
