We fully recognise that you don't learn to coach by reading a book; you have to practice coaching to improve your craft. However, we have both read a vast array of coaching books and have another sizeable collection on our Kindles, waiting for us to find the time to explore. We also have our favourites that we continue to dip into to remind us of theories, tools and techniques that we have encountered. In addition, we love a good book recommendation, and are often asked for them by our trainees. So, in this episode, we are exploring some of the books that could be added to your ‘to be read' list, in relation to different coaching approaches - and we throw in a few extra tombs that aren't really coaching books, but we love them! For some of us, imposter syndrome is an anxiety generator. It goes to the heart of feeling worthy, being competent or having the right to be in a particular space. Doing this episode made me feel like an imposter. I can hear slurred words, tangents and howlers of editing. But here is the thing. I don't allow it to keep me from trying and doing. Sure, I could not do the show. Or hire and editor. Or let a freaking non-human try to emulate my speech patterns. I need to do this in order to get better. And it might take another eight years for that to happen. I have the time. Adding the label of speaker to your bio is becoming more common, but calling yourself a speaker and actually being able to deliver your message in a way that educates, inspires and motivates are two very different things. There are lots of people boring the pants off audiences, when they don't need to, and this is a belief that my guest Tina Bakehouse and I share in common. Tina is a communications coach and soon to be author of a new book called ‘Discover Our Magnetic Speaker Within'. She asked me and other speaking coaches to input into the book and I am chuffed to have her come on the show to share more about it and for us to discuss some great tips for helping you become that magnetic speaker. Tina spent many years teaching communications in education, and then in the corporate world, before striking out to set up her own business in 2020. Like me, she is on a mission to protect audiences from boring speakers and speeches, and today she works with heart-centered leaders and organizations to provide speaking and storytelling consulting and coaching. A former Disney Cast Member and TEDx speaker and coach, Tina is passionate about educating others to become more self-aware and enhance their speaker style. There are lots of gold nuggets here so enjoy! What you'll discover: How Tina went from Iowan farm girl to Disney cast member. The biggest takeaway from her time at Disney. How she shifted gears to what she does today. What happened when she lost her voice in 2007, and what she learned from it. How Tina used storytelling to build community. The different types of speaker style and how you can discern yours. Three big speaking mistakes people should avoid. What it means to be a magnetic speaker. Three tips for becoming so you can move closer to becoming a magnetic speaker. Prof. Kelly Goldsmith, PhD is a brilliant researcher in the space of marketing and human behavior. She was the person who helped America understand why we were hoarding toilet paper at the start of the pandemic. It was her work to understand scarcity that helped people laugh at themselves in the midst of a stressful situation that was out of their control. In this episode of AMPstigator, we talk through what the research says about setting goals, finding happiness and living with perceived scarcity. Goldsmith explains how to overcome our human nature to better pursue a life with more meaning and purpose. PLUS! We delve into her 24-day stint on Survivor and her strategies for making it on and staying on the show. This episode is for you if: - You love witty fast-talkers with high IQ's (Kelly is GOLD for this) - You geek-out over research on human behavior - You want to better understand why you never reach your goals - You want to understand why you're afraid to take the leap and live with purpose - You want to hear about Kelly's stint on Survivor What's in this episode?Prof. Kelly Goldsmith, PhD brings her 20+ years of research into bite-sized and simple ideas that help you understand human behavior and better harness it to live a life with purpose. We start by discussing goals and why we usually don't meet them: we have unrealistic timelines, we don't make them quantifiable, and we just give up. We also talk about happiness - more specifically - why we don't try to be happy. Most people perceive happiness as something others can impact. When people perceive their level of happiness as something they can control, their overall measure of happiness improves. Goldsmith specializes in scarcity - which is how consumers respond to not having enough. In this episode of AMPstigator, she applies her research in scarcity to a person's fear of changing their lives or living with purpose. She also discusses her 24-day stint on Survivor Season 3. Her account of getting on the show is laugh-out-loud funny and what it taught her about herself and others.

"At its core, this study emphasises that our bodies are important. Anything that gets you out of your head and creating an in-the-moment kind of awareness is a powerful and useful thing. Physical awareness is an extra option and options have value."Scientific research, especially in the psychological sciences, is rarely linear. There is no definitive answer and, as with most things, context is important. This is evident in the conversations that have sparked around 'Power Posing' or the idea that body positions can change the way you think and feel.My guest today's guest is Tom Loncar, executive coach, writer, researcher on leadership psychology and mindset and founder of “Grow Gravitas." In a recent article for the British Psychological Society Tom examined power posing's 10-year journey and the role that it has played in social science research. It's a great article about a fascinating topic - whether small postural adjustment make us feel more powerful when facing stressful situations. But while power posing is interesting in its own right, it has an even more fascinating back story that sees it embroiled in psychology's replication crisis'.Listen in to hear Tom and I geek out about:Power posing: What it is and why it took the world by storm. Why there is rarely a 'silver bullet' for behaviour change. How Tom got started in his in-depth research by diving down rabbit holes.A short but long history of embodiment or 'embodied cognition' and how our bodies influence our emotions. The role Power Posing played in behavioural science's 'replication crisis'.Where the dialogue is now for 'power posing' and where it might take us next.About our guest:In addition to his work as an executive coach and researcher, Tom is also a regular contributing writer on leadership for the Australian Financial Review and BOSS Magazine. His articles have covered a wide variety of topics examining leadership growth and the often unseen barriers that can get in the way of doing what matters.Where to find Tom:Twitter - https://twitter.com/TomLoncarLinkedIn - https://linkedin.com/in/tloncarResources mentioned in this episode:A Decade of ‘Power Posing': Where Do We Stand? by Tom LoncarDoes "Power Posing" really work? #5 Asma Begum In this episode I'm speaking with Asma Begum, Founder of Soul Sisters supporting domestic violence survivors. We met last year at the WomanKind North event for International Women's Day and I sat and listened to Asma tell her story on stage and I felt so moved by her story that I knew I wanted her to be a guest on the show. Asma is a British Bangladeshi single mum now living in North UK and is a survivor of domestic abuse, having fled an abusive marriage into a women's refuge with her young son. She has worked within the Corporate care sector for over 10 years and she now delivers coaching and motivational speeches about the Domestic Abuse. Over the last two and half years Asma has joined groups supporting female survivors of domestic abuse, both online and in person. Using her own experiences to inspire and motivate other women that are also wishing to turn their lives around from the negative impact on health, well-being and happiness to positively overcome traumas of domestic abuse. Asma shares how her family migrated from Bangladesh and how they had high expectations for her and how that was where Imposter Syndrome started for her. She also talks about her experience in the workplace as well as an abusive relationship had an impact on what she believed about herself and how she has broke away from what others told her. We talk about the labels that others give you as well as the labels we give ourselves and why it's important to challenge those and start to peel them away. She also talks about how she studied law and instead of following the career path that her dad expected her to follow, life events took her to the work she does now, supporting survivors of domestic abuse. I know I say this every time but I loved this conversation and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed talking with Asma. He is also host and creator of the very successful, Physician’s Guide to Doctoring Podcast. His podcast interviews physicians and non-physician experts to help teach us as he says, “What we should have been learning while we were memorizing Krebs cycle.” The Physician’s Guide to Doctoring is a practical guide for practicing physicians, physicians in training, and all allied health professionals. Topics range from personal finance, to politics, to improving interactions with patients. Dr. Block starts by telling us about what he’s learned from his podcast guests and specifically there’s been a lot of discussion on physician burnout. He tells us about saying “yes” to the few things you are passionate about, “no” to everything else, and the importance of building relationships. Dr. Orsini and Brad also share stories about the importance of getting along with patients and team members, how banter builds relationships and referrals, and how important patient experience and patient satisfaction scores are today. Brad shares a story about how the patient is the star of the show and he tells us a great quote that relates to humor. . Dr. Orsini talks about the importance of just being a genuine person and finding commonality with people, and Dr. Block stresses how important it is to know the names of people, their family members, and little things about them. We learn about a guest Brad had on his podcast, Blake Eastman, who talked about interest and authority, which are two things he thought were key to nonverbal communication. Dr. Orsini mentions a book worth checking out by Amy Cuddy and the interesting things she found out about nonverbal language. Brad shares great advice of how “the patient is the star of the show.” We end with Dr. Block telling us the most difficult type of conversation he’s had and shares some incredible advice. John Rogers is the author of The Renaissance Campaign - a mindset that has put him at the helm of a billion-dollar transportation company, working alongside Michael J Fox promoting the advancement of stem cell research, and testifying in front of the U.S. Senate. His core worldview posits that most all challenges can be solved with the right mix of holistic thinking coupled with an effective high-impact campaign. Key Takeaways [3:45] If you don’t have revenue, you’re not a business. Leaders often find themselves so busy working in the business that they end up not working on the business. The same holds true in government. [7:15] Whether it be non-profit, business, or government, they’re not making conscious time to create space for the long-term picture and the health of the organization. A piece of this is that they don’t know how and they don’t have the discipline. [12:05] The Cassandra Syndrome is something that occurs when you know what’s going to happen, but nobody believes you. This applies to things like climate change and artificial intelligence. [14:30] Our society has become so wonderfully specialized, but that can also get in our way. [15:35] Today’s problems require multiple heads with multiple expertise to solve for. [16:15] In order to get holistic thinking into an organization, it first starts with getting some creatives in the door. [18:55] In order to break out of silos within your organization, you need to have diversity of thought. [23:55] John immerses a wide variety of people in a room for a couple of days and doesn’t give them a break. This is to see how they work under pressure. [26:35] John’s coach made him go through an exercise to use three words to describe himself in all areas of life. It was a tough challenge because of all the words that you end up leaving behind. [34:45] John shares a little bit about the stem cell work he did with actor Michael J. Fox. Quotable Quotes “We have short-term challenges that leaders have to navigate, but we have bigger, long-term challenges at the same time.” “We are all prisoners of our own perspective.” “The naysayers, they disappear, they get swallowed up.” Resources Mentioned Johnrogers360.com The Renaissance Campaign: A Problem-Solving Formula for Your Biggest Challenges, by John Rogers Connect with John on Twitter: @_JohnRogers360 Tom Wujec — “First, tell me how you make toast” — TED Talks Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries, by Safi Bahcall The Leadership Podcast is Sponsored by: Cultivate Grit. There’s a lot here that you can take and start to use right away in your own life. Topics we got to included: What it means to “master your code” The distinction between automatically programmed thoughts and behaviors and those we choose deliberately Parallels between Darren’s approach and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) Where our unconscious programs come from What my guest discovered about his own unconscious programs The profound difference that one loving relationship can make The importance of the beliefs you hold about yourself How we can redefine what we believe is true about ourselves Identity reconstruction as our human “superpower” The value in a morning ritual Setting yourself up for success Locus of control and what it means to be “at the effect of your life” The “amygdala hijack” and the effect on our agency when emotions run high Finding freedom by creating space between stimulus and response The importance of posture, breathing, and facial expression in how safe and relaxed we feel (Darren recommended this book by Amy Cuddy, Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges - affiliate link) The anxiety that comes from our unconscious programs The influence of Stoic philosophy in Darren’s work (see this previous episode with Stoic writer Dr. William Ferraiolo) How to find one’s purpose Ikigai as one’s reason for getting out of bed in the morning (see this bestselling book for an in-depth exploration of the concept [affiliate link]) Abraham Maslow and self-actualization Why we often run from our calling and purpose Why being unsure of ourselves about a new project can actually be a positive sign Playing not to lose versus playing to win The crucial importance of the questions we ask ourselves Seeing ourselves as vessels through which our calling can be expressed Darren Gold is a Managing Partner at The Trium Group, where he advises and coaches CEOs and leadership teams at many of the world’s most innovative companies, including Roche, Dropbox, Lululemon, Sephora, Cisco, eBay, Activision, and Warner Bros. Establishing a work-life balance is important in overall life management. In today’s episode, Cheryl Knowlton returns to the show to talk about life management in real estate. It can be challenging to set boundaries when you don’t necessarily work a traditional nine to five job. In this episode, they talk about making shifts in our business, what systems you can put in place, and the importance of making time for yourself and the people you love. As you listen, take a breath, and use this opportunity to think about what changes you may need to make. Many people get into real estate for the job flexibility, but sometimes this flexibility can backfire and turn into too much work or end up taking an emotional toll. Cheryl talks about some statistics about some realities in real estate. One of the biggest factors to upset work-life balance is expectations — of what the industry really is and what it requires. Cheryl shares her own journey of getting into real estate. She started on the mortgage side of things, and after getting her real estate license, she had to change her mindset and her skill set. Education and designations were instrumental in getting her to where she is today. Education can help you restructure and improve your business in ways that will remove stress from you and your clients. Cheryl shares a resource you can use to identify and diagnose what aspects of your life are out of balance. Knowing this can help you pick out the pain points that you need to adjust to balance things out. Use the code BONUS with the Self-Assessment link below to find out yours. She talks about the importance of having a coach or accountability partner and setting measurable goals. If you are struggling to find balance, it is important to get feedback from others. You can identify which area is causing you stress, and then focus on fixing that. Monica talks about taking a sabbatical, and how this helped to reinvigorate her business. They talk about things you can do on sabbatical, to refuel not only in business but also in your personal life. Cheryl talks about her daily schedule, and how having systems in place helps her keep her business structured. Anytime anything isn’t working, we need to create a new system to figure out how to make it work. Monica and Cheryl talk about some of their business systems, including a transaction coordinator, an assistant (if you can), and also people to help with other chores so you can take things off your own plate. Make today count — whatever systems you are putting in place for your business or personal life, it’s important that it’s affording you more time to be with the people that you love. When you’re with them, try to make sure you don’t have any outside distractions so you can be in the moment. Setting these types of boundaries is especially important for individuals who don’t work a traditional nine-to-five job. Setting goals for your personal life can also inspire you to work harder. Having goals that are beyond paying the bills can keep you motivated. Cheryl talks about 10 areas in her life and the goals she is working toward in each area. She also shares how she is able to find joy in each area, even when it’s hard. As you set these goals for yourself, make sure they are things you are in control of. When you control what you can control, everything else seems to fall into place. What does it mean to have presence? What does it take to have presence? Can anyone cultivate it? The inaugural episode of The PowerUP Your Presence Podcast will answer these questions and more - beginning with an anecdote about a scientist trying rise within her firm. She had been passed over for promotion to VP several times and when she confronted the CEO over it, she was told she lacked the presence required for senior leadership and was referred to HR to help with that. HR then referred her to Diane and Sandra for coaching and development. They coached her around the key elements of connecting authentically, inspiring others, building confidence, and motivating a team into action. Presence can be developed, and this podcast is designed to demystify what presence is, provide tips, resources, and stories to help you step into the power of your presence and elevate your leadership by bringing out the best version of yourself. Presence starts from within and requires alignment between your mind, body and words. It requires growing strong "power skills" like emotional and social intelligence to build exceptional leadership. Diane and Sandra use the example of Matthew Lieberman's Ted Talk The Social Brain and how social thinking plays a bigger role in any industry than analytical thinking does. Beyond the brain's role in presence, there's also the power of the body. Body language, posture and performance are a key component of what we're talking about. Amy Cuddy explains in her book Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges as well as her Ted Talk Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are that when we take more expansive poses for at least two minutes before an important meeting, presentation, or interview, we will appear more confident. She coined the term "Power Pose". This episode would like to leave you with 3 tips: Tip 1: Be Present in the Moment In the modern attention economy, it's increasingly difficult to be entirely focused on only one thing. We all rewired ourselves for multi-tasking, but now it's more important to focus and reset to the task at hand, being mindful about where we are placing our attention. We offer a few techniques including balanced breathing, water-glass meditations, and writing quick notes about things that might distract you. Tip 2: Nail Your First Impressions Yes, Impressions. Every interaction, big or small, creates an impact, either positive or negative. You can make sure your impressions go well by setting a clear intention before entering an interaction. Focus on one word you want to have set the tone around how you want people to experience you during the interaction. There's a whole episode about first impressions coming soon, be sure to add us to your podcasting app of choice now. Tip 3: Standing Out When you Speak This is all about what you say, and how you say it. Standing out begins with congruence, let your facial expressions and posture carry the same feeling that your words do. Take a cue from tip number two and set the intent you wish to demonstrate. Furthermore, be concise. Let your audience know only what they need to know not everything that you know. When performing to your intent, don't leave your authenticity behind, simply stretch a little to suit the situation. Brian Little's Ted Talk, Who Are you Really? The Puzzle of Personality has some great additional advice on how to do this. Another good way to build up these skills is to use your phone to record yourself, it's less distracting and more flexible than just standing in front of the mirror. As you review the video, focus on improving one development opportunity so it doesn't feel so overwhelming. Until next time: Be present, be warm, be curious, and take notice of how others react to you. Love the show? Let us know! Do you enjoy listening to the PowerUp your Presence Podcast? In this episode we discuss the incredibly important thing that everyone (including you!) get’s wrong about presence, we explore how to prime yourself for the best performance in moments of pressure and high stakes situations where other people are watching and judging you. We look at the results from thousands of experiments over the last few decades to uncover the fascinating truth about power and powerlessness. And we share the exact strategy you can use to shift your brain into the mode that allows you to view the world as more friendly, help you feel more creative, and make you into someone who takes action. We dig deep into all this and much more with our guest Dr. Amy Cuddy. Dr. Amy Cuddy is an American social psychologist, author, and speaker. She currently lectures on the psychology of leadership and influence at Harvard University and she and her work have won several awards including being named one of “50 Women Who Are Changing The World” by Business Insider. She is the author of the 2015 best-selling book Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges and her 2012 TED talk is the second most viewed talk of all time. Her work has been featured in TIME, Wired, Fast Company, NPR, and countless academic journals. The incredibly important thing that everyone (including you!) get’s wrong about Presence Presence is a momentary state - its when you are attuned to and able to comfortably express your authentic best selfWhat is does it mean to be your “authentic best self?"Presence is about moments of pressure that come from human interaction - people judging us, high stakes situations throwing us off our games When you are present you become aligned, you become synchronous, you aren’t getting in the WAY of yourself you’re BEING yourself - you believe your story and people hear, feel, and see that in your verbal and nonverbal communication The people who do the best on Shark Tank are the ones who clearly buy what they are selling - there is no reservation, you can hear their belief and their conviction When you’re in a place of feeling Powerful - you see the world as more friendly, you’re more creative, you’re more likely to take action - you view the world from the “approach” systemThe vital difference between what Amy calls PERSONAL POWER and what many people’s traditional understanding of POWER might be.Make peace with the idea of Power - its OK to feel powerful. Power is not just power over others or power over resources - its about feeling that you control your own resources, your own destiny, your own life. You want to feel powerful - you want other people to feel powerful - power is a HUGE piece of your general wellbeing. As you start to feel less powerful, as you start to feel less control, you begin to flip into the “Inhibition System” Focus on feelings of expansiveness and try to prepare yourself before getting in high-pressure situations Often times “Mind-Body” Interventions are MUCH more effective, especially when we’re anxious, than “Mind-Mind” InterventionsIf the body is acting like it’s not being threatened, the mind will often follow into the same pattern How does Imposter Syndrome play into feelings of powerlessness? Homework: Before you go into a stressful situation - prepare by using expansive postures, in private, have good posture, carry yourself with a sense of pride, mind your posture. Notice when you slouch and make yourself small. Homework: Change how you’re holding your phone - sit back and hold your phone up over youHomework: Pay attention to other’s posture. Transcript(Transcript is not exact to audio. For best training, listen to audio)Think back to the last time you were in the zone—acutely alive, true to yourself, and performing at your full potential. It’s that moment you knew you were doing what you were born to do and all the typical distractions and awkwardness from self-doubts and insecurities are gloriously absent. It’s in that moment that you were operating in your authentic self. All of us are striving toward our best self. All of us are trying to present our best self personally and professionally. The problem is that the best self is still evolving. Let me explain. You have an idea of what your best self looks like. Unfortunately, your idea of your best self compared to your current self makes you acutely aware of what you’re lacking generating self-doubt and insecurity. In the quest to capture your best self, you study and learn from those you admire. But you either feel even more insecure as you compare yourself to them or you try to be like them, which your body interprets as a lie. That conflict leaks out in your body language and those around you pick up on this subconsciously. The trick is making sure that your idea of your best self is true to your authentic self. And the answer to that question is in the last time you were in the zone. Every time you’re in the zone, your brain creates a vivid memory of it. It’s a snapshot of who you are at your best AUTHENTIC SELF, not who you think you should be or who you’re trying to be. The 3 Things You Must HaveIn the book, “Presence: Bringing Your Best Self to Your Biggest Challenges,” Amy Cuddy shares a study of 185 videos of individuals pitching their ideas to executives. The surprise was that it wasn’t the idea, no matter how good it was, that got the yes. It was confidence, comfort, and passion for the idea. I.e. those who were comfortable in their own skin and confident and passion about their idea communicated those things in their body language. The executives were looking for those things (whether they knew it or not). You see, genuine confidence, comfort, and passion can’t be faked. It comes from authenticity, which is why everyone, but especially introverts, must truly love and believe in what they do and their product or service. Your belief and passion form the platform for your authentic self that silences all the self-doubts that normally distract you in such situations. Your belief and passion must extend to who you are as a person. You must fight for acceptance of your authentic self in spite of all the things you see that’s wrong with you while at the same time actively engaging in personal and professional development to enhance your strengths and reshape areas of weakness. Some of you might not truly know who you are. Throughout life, you’ve tried to mold yourself into who you think others will accept and or the person others have told you to be. Sometimes you’ve had to adapt and conduct life and business in a way that’s not your core self in order to succeed. Over time, these adaptations bury your authentic self making who you are even more confusing.Opposite OperationOne of the things I’ve seen a few times in working with individuals is an “opposite operation” of personality. Let me give you an example. In the DISC profile personality assessment, you have D for dominant, I for influence, S for steadiness, and C for conscientious. D and S are opposites and I and C are opposites. When a person comes up as a DS or SD combo or IC or CI combo, I know that somewhere they’ve been told that their true personality is deficient so they’ve adapted to the personality that another believes they should be, usually a parent, a teacher, or anyone they hold in esteem. I’ve also found that typically that person wants them to be more like them! It’s time to stop conforming yourself to another person’s idea of who you should be.The biggest change I’ve seen in my personal and professional life is ACCEPTING AND RECONCILING my life and business WITH WHO I TRULY AM! I’m still learning and evolving as a person. But I can only truly connect with you and help you when I’m being true to who I am. And the same is true for you.Now that doesn’t mean being obnoxious in our strengths or being blind to our weaknesses and their impact on those around us. Instead, it’s a fine line of awareness of how we’re impacting those around us while being true to who we are. Authenticity always takes into consideration how we can help others be true to who they are.4 QuestionsHere are four questions that can help you clear attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that hurt you and clearly define who you are when in the zone.1. What three words best describe you as an individual?2. What is unique about you that leads to your best times and best performances?3. Reflect on a specific time at work or home that you were acting in a way that felt natural and right (i.e. being in the zone) that you can repeat.4. What are your signature strengths and how can you use them?Take time answering these questions. Write them down. And then avoid not liking them! Let’s be real, you can’t change who you are at your core. The quicker you accept that, the quicker you’ll reach your goals for life and business.

Total Duration 49:46 Download episode 189 "Calm Down" Doesn't Work What is something in your near future that's causing you to feel nervous? For example: A certification exam that you'll be taking soon A presentation you need to make to your senior management A tough conversation with a team member of stakeholder An interview for a job you really want When you're faced with having to perform and the stakes are high, it's normal to start feeling nervous. But there's little evidence that just telling someone to "calm down" will provide any benefit. In fact, it might make it worse. So, what does work? HBR Senior Editor Dan McGinn has a new book that takes on this very topic. In Psyched Up: How the Science of Mental Preparation Can Help You Succeed, Dan shares evidence-based insights on how you can overcome your pre-performance anxiety. What allows you to walk onto the stage or into the testing center or into that meeting room with the eye of the tiger? Dan shares his insights in this episode. During the recap of the interview, I mention the following episodes, which I recommend for further learning: Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges, by Amy Cuddy. Amy builds off her ever-popular TED Talk about using the "super hero" pose and shares ideas on how to be more confident and assertive. My interview with Amy is at http://www.PeopleAndProjectsPodcast.com/142 Performance Breakthrough: A Radical Approach to Success at Work, by Cathy Salit. Shakespeare wasn't kidding when he said "All the world's a stage!" Cathy suggests that every interaction is a performance, and when we can see life through that lens, much growth and learning is possible. Sheila Kelley is the founder of a movement called S Factor which is a sensual movement practice that unleashes the feminine mind, body, heart, and soul. Many women today are locked into their masculine energy in ways that show up in their physical movements, even if their other mannerisms and characteristics are strikingly feminine. This is especially visible in the hips and shoulders, which are rigidly locked in many women instead of being loose, flowing, and feminine. Today, we talk about unleashing the feminine body through movement, pole dancing, and more. Connect With Sheila: Sheila KelleyS Factor@thesheilakelley on TwitterSheila Kelley on FacebookSheila Kelley on Instagram The Mission Log: [02:53] - Sheila gives a brief introduction for listeners who may not yet be familiar with who she is and what she does. She then explains how she got into the kind of movement she now teaches others in S Factor. [05:01] - What happens when a woman connects with her body? [06:05] - Sheila talks about some transformations that she has seen in her students. [07:35] - We hear how Sheila gets her ideas or -- as she puts it -- listens to what the body has to say to her. [10:36] - Orion takes a moment to share her own experiences with Sheila’s work. Shelia then talks about the difference between who she was at the beginning of this journey and who she is today. [13:52] - Sheila discusses her ways of infusing love and a sense of sisterhood into her S Factor community. [16:41] - There is nowhere on the planet for a woman to safely and fully embrace who she is, Sheila points out, which is what S Factor aims to provide. [17:43] - How can Sheila help a listener who has body shame? In her answer, she shares a story about her three-year-old daughter. [19:25] - Sheila offers more advice for someone who isn’t feeling great about their body, and she and Orion discuss the importance of movement as an aspect of femininity. [22:36] - Sheila talks about how to transition from the energy of unguarded (and vulnerable) femininity present in her retreats back into everyday life. [25:53] - One of the things that Orion loves about Sheila’s method is that women learn it for themselves rather than for other people. [28:20] - Orion shares a story about her recent experience while driving home from a seminar in San Diego. [29:01] - Can anyone do pole dancing? [31:01] - Sheila points out that part of the job of a leader is to help awaken those who don’t know that they’re sleeping. [32:15] - In Sheila’s perspective, what is the difference between “feminine” and “masculine” energy? She answers, then talks about how to bring one’s feminine side into the business world, which is generally very masculine. [35:51] - If the feminine doesn’t rise, the whole planet will be a disaster, Sheila explains. [36:29] - Sheila talks about the primal circle and the important role of femininity. [38:33] - Orion reveals something she learned on a visit to her family in Israel. Sheila then offers a story of her own about discoveries through travel. [40:52] - We move on to talking about alter egos and the 10 icons that Sheila mentioned briefly earlier in the conversation. She then discusses how making physical changes can also have emotional impacts. [45:06] - Sheila lists the icons or energies that she has been talking about. The five light energies are the innocent teaser, the blissful pleaser, the champion, the lustful lover, and the joyful playmate. The darker ones are the naughty provocateur, the dangerous challenger, the ice queen, the deep soulful siren, and the shy reluctant enigma. [46:33] - Each month this year, S Factor will highlight one of the icons. Sheila takes a moment to talk about the innocent teaser and the ice queen. [49:16] - Sheila talks about the three-year program that some of the S Factor teachers take, and mentions the book Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy. [50:00] - Sheila lists places where listeners can find her. [50:11] - What are Sheila’s three quick tips to living a stellar life? 1. Move your body. 2. Breathe all the way down into your lower back and let it move into your toes. 3. Embrace and free and allow every single emotional response you have to move healthfully through your body. Do you ever feel like a yes man or woman? Do you feel compelled to agree with every request, task, or option you receive even when you're really not on board? Many people find themselves doing this because they either just want to be polite or easy to work with. If you're a people-pleaser, you probably say yes often as well as a result. This week on the podcast, we're discussing what happens when you don't ask for what you truly want and how it can hold you back. Why We Don't Ask For What We Want The truth is, many of us have trouble asking for what we want whether it's at work or in our personal life. We do this for a number of reasons but here are three of the main motivating factors. You Want to Seem Compliant If you strive for order and structure, it's natural that you'll want to seem compliant and want everything to run smoothly. Society teaches us at a young age that putting ourselves first is wrong and our wants and needs are not as important as the next one. We're always taught to consider others first and make them happy. If you happen to want something that doesn't quite fit into that selfless mode, you may start to feel wrong or guilty when it comes to asking for what you want so you hold back. You're Afraid of How Others Will React Fear is another factor that can prevent you from asking for what you want. If you value what others think about you and how they perceive you, you'd probably be afraid of how they will react when you ask for something that different. Even if you say you don't care about what others think, we all do to a certain point which is why you probably wouldn't leave the house in pajamas and with your hair a mess. You Don't Know What You Want Finally, the third main reason why you may not ask for what you want is because you don't even know what you want, to begin with. If this sounds like it may resonate with you, you most likely either don't know what's possible or just don't know how to reach your end goal or why you're trying to reach it. What you want or think you want may be too vague. For example, there are a ton of people who enroll in college each year because they claim they want a good job, but haven't really narrowed down what they want their 'good job' to help them achieve in life and what that job would include. There are many students with undecided majors because they have no idea what they want. If you find yourself not knowing what you want or not realizing what's possible, you need to determine your values and envision the life you want so you can seek out opportunities that will support your end goal. The Benefits of Asking For What You Want There are so many benefits to finally being able to ask for what you truly want. While many fear that risk won't be worth it or that they'll experience backlash for being blunt and authentic, it's usually not the case. By being firm and asking for what you want, you can: Become happier and more satisfied Be able to take care of yourself better Have less stress and anxiety Gain more respect from others Communicate better with others Improve your overall quality of life Ready to start learning how to define what you truly want and ask for it without fear and guilt? Listen to our podcast episode. In this episode we discuss: 1:20 - Putting Yourself First (and not being rude about it) 6:00 - Evaluate your goals and your job to find common ground 16:30 - If you don't ask for what you want, then nobody will know what you want 22:10 - Asking for what you want - a raise and knowing your own value Related Links to Check Out: Why Being Busy Shouldn't Be a Badge of Honor What it Means to Live Authentically How to Let Go of What You Don't Want to Create More Space The Grass Isn't Always Greener When You're Self Employed Ted Talk: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are by Amy Cuddy Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy You can also listen to the audio book for FREE with a 30 day trial of Audible.com!

In this podcast Kelly interviews authors Rebecca Coda & Rick Jetter about their hot new book Dunk Tank. The official title of their book is: Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank: How to Prevail When Others Want to See you Drown. Both Rick & Rebecca are educational disruptors and forward thinkers with a passion to support ALL current & ALL future educational leaders (PK-20). Their mission and vision is simple: We must break the glass ceiling to eliminate the status quo to ensure equity for ALL students. Rebecca and Rick have both faced adversity in their careers and are willing to do whatever it takes to call out ALL the “elephants” in the educational room so that educators, political leaders, and industry innovators can leverage talent and work together to best serve kids. About the book: Have you ever felt as if a supervisor, coworker, or even your own school board was trying to sabotage you? No school leader is immune to the effects of discrimination, bad politics, revenge, or ego-driven coworkers. If you've ever worked in such conditions, you know that adversaries can make your job as a school leader miserable. But even if you're lucky enough to be thriving in your current role, you've probably seen leaders whose careers have been tanked by difficult and demanding circumstances. You may even wonder from time to time, "Am I next?" In Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank, Rebecca Coda and Rick Jetter interviewed superintendents, principals, and other educational leaders across the nation who have faced "dunk tank" situations. Through real-life stories and by sharing insightful research, the authors (who are dunk tank survivors themselves) equip school leaders with the practical knowledge and emotional tools necessary to survive and, better yet, avoid getting "dunked." Jason Van Orden helps influencers and thoughts leaders turn their expertise and ideas into courses, content and automated systems that amplify their income and impact. He has been doing and teaching this since 2005. Knowing his own authentic best self is central to everything he does. Jason and Jeremy Frandsen's Internet Business Mastery course was the reason Kevin Appleby and Graham Arrowsmith got to know each other. Jason and Jeremy created a Facebook Group for course buyers and the rest is history. If you are thinking about making the most out of the new year, then this episode is for you. Listen and find out how to leverage your own authentic best self. 11 years ago, that's 2005, Jason and Jeremy created the first internet business podcast with Internet Business Mastery which has produced over 340 episodes. http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/internet-business-mastery-business-development-and-internet/internet-business-mastery-get-paid-to-live-your-purpose Why Authentic Best Self? Jason has been practising “Authentic Best Self” for some years. The phrase itself is credited to Amy Cuddy from her new book “Presence, Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges”. (Amazon UK http://amzn.to/2hmJKu4 and Amazon USA http://amzn.to/2gi39aJ Jason sees Authentic Best Self as a continual self-awareness and understanding of the factors and strengths that contribute to YOU performing at your peak. Leading to you creating maximum value in the world, and enjoying maximum fulfilment and having maximum energy all from the work that you do. Amy Cuddy advises that when you need to show up as your best self, if you PRECEDE that by referring to some information about your values and your strengths, and you remind yourself of that regularly, the science shows that you perform at a higher level with less stress. Hence your creativity is better and your output is better. Authentic Best Self is an understanding and leveraging information that you are continually discovering about yourself that leads to peak performance that leads to impact in the world. So, how does Authentic Best Self work in practice? For Jason, it is literally a DropBox folder of stuff, of assessments that he has taken, of journal entries he has made, feedback letters from people. How does Jason use this information? When he is faced with a business opportunity, this self-insight, acts as a sort of compass. As entrepreneurs, you are faced with lots of ideas and opportunities than you can pursue, with your limited resources – time, energy, money – than you can apply yourself to with any form of efficacy. Jason uses these materials to remind himself that he performs best when he allows himself to work in a particular way. He can quickly assess whether the opportunity will lead to him being over-extended or stressed. It is a FILTER and a COMPASS. One of Jason's strengths is research. He takes in a lot of information. He looks carefully at existing systems. This is the root of his success. Alternatively, his wife is kind of the opposite. Jason builds into his business people who will avoid him taking too long. Whether that is his wife or having a business partner who is more of a quick start person. How would Jason advise listeners to create their ABOUT YOU understanding material? Ask your close friends and colleagues Reach out to 5, 6 or 7 people who know you well enough and whose input you trust. It might be in a conversation, sending an email or writing them a letter. Ask them “What are the things that you value in me most?”, “What are the times that you see me as the most passionate, or most effective?”, “What are the things that you can depend on me for?”.Why do this? Often, we discount our strengths. Because these things come naturally to us, so we assume doesn't everybody operate that way? That's why it is important for others to affirm your strengths. You can then OWN the commonalities and themes,

Welcome to the 14th episode of Minisode Monday! We keep finding so many useful tactics and tips that we want to share with you, but they don't fit into the format of a regular show -- hence, Minisode Monday. Today, we tried to come up with a word for the opposite of worry. We failed, but it doesn't mean we can't put the idea to practice as we try to understand why worrying never helps. The Cheat Sheet: Have you ever seen Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks? If you have, you might remember this line: "Would it help?" (We won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it.) Worrying is what we do when there's nothing we really can do. It's counterproductive. Worrying causes stress, which interferes with our performance, energy levels, and focus -- which makes it harder to deal with what we're worrying about in the first place. The cure for worry? Presence (as recently discussed with Amy Cuddy, author of Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges). Focus on the task at hand. Face forward, but don't live in the pretend future where the thing you're fearing wins. This differs from strategizing for contingencies, where you stay emotionally detached from potential outcomes. Instead of worrying -- where the worst-case scenario is the reality we imagine -- try imagining the best-case scenario, instead. Welcome to the 13th episode of Minisode Monday! We keep finding so many useful tactics and tips that we want to share with you, but they don't fit into the format of a regular show -- hence, Minisode Monday. Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges author and recent guest Amy Cuddy joins us to talk about something a lot of us experience: Imposter Syndrome. The Cheat Sheet: Do you ever feel like you don't belong where you are? That you don't deserve what you have? That everyone else is smarter than you? You might be experiencing Imposter Syndrome. This doesn't just apply to high achievers -- it happens to almost everyone (80%), and is not limited by demographic. Do you remove yourself from situations where you worry you might be "found out" for not being good enough? Common avoidances: speaking at events, performing, taking on challenges, and talking about this feeling with anyone else -- because we feel completely alone in this condition. Pluralistic Ignorance: the feeling that everyone else knows something we don't know. Imposter Syndrome activates the same centers in the brain as pain. It feeds itself: the more we succeed, the more we feel we're getting undue attention, and the more likely we're going to be "found out." We can't say no to opportunities just because we feel threatened with discovery. The best thing we can do if we find ourselves experiencing Imposter Syndrome is talking about it with others. We might be surprised to find that, while opening up to someone we trust, they'll admit feeling this way, too. We're not alone. To learn more about social dynamics and overcoming conditions like Imposter Syndrome, take the Art of Charm Challenge by clicking here, or text CHARMED to 33444. Amy Cuddy (@amyjccuddy) is a social psychologist, TED Talk speaker, and author of Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges. The Cheat Sheet: What is presence, and why do the charismatic seem to have it in abundance while so many of us struggle to find it regularly in ourselves? Presence is a renewable resource -- not a permanent state. Confident body language begets confidence and presence. Arrogance isn't a proxy for confidence -- why inauthenticity undermines trust, how you can keep yourself from conveying it, and how to spot it in someone else. Extroverts don't have an unfair advantage when it comes to commanding presence; by the same token, introverts aren't at a disadvantage. And so much more... In this role Vivian created First Data Salutes, a company-wide military engagement strategy to provide the military community with access to career opportunities and best-in-class education resources, while offering premier business solutions to veteran-owned businesses. Before joining First Data, Vivian helped to found Blue Star Families, the largest chapter-based military support organization in the country, where she most recently served Director of Research and Policy. While at BSF, Vivian created and oversaw BSF’s groundbreaking Military Family Lifestyle Survey, which examines a broad spectrum of issues affecting modern-day military families. The survey was referenced in Presidential Directive-9 “Strengthening Our Military Families,” the precursor to the Obama Administration’s Joining Forces initiative and continues to be cited in military policy discussions nationally. She is also the creator of the Blue Star Spouse Employment Toolkit, the first of its kind military spouse employment resource, written and tested based on the unique career needs of military spouses. The Spouse Employment Toolkit has since evolved into a suite of military spouse professional development initiatives known as Blue Star Careers, including educational, employment, and mentoring programming and has been adapted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce into an online military spouse resume engine, Career Spark. Before joining BSF, Vivian served as a Supply Corps officer in the Navy, on active duty and in the Reserves. After serving in the Navy, she used her G.I. Bill to attain her Ph.D. in Public Administration and Urban Policy from Old Dominion University, where she earned several awards, including Ph.D. Outstanding Student of the Year, Phi Kappa Phi, The Pindur and the Ted Constant Scholarships, and a University Fellowship. She holds a masters degree from the University of Maryland University College and undergraduate degrees in Journalism and Public and International Affairs from the University of Georgia. Vivian’s research on civic engagement, the military community, and public policy has been published in peer-reviewed journals like Public Administration Review and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, along with mainstream media outlets. She has appeared as a subject matter expert on panels, advisory boards, conferences, and national media outlets, including CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, and NPR. And, she is a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University. In 2012, Vivian was named a Daily Point of Light by the Points of Light Institute for recognition of her volunteer work and a "Top 40 Under 40” alumni by the University of Georgia’s Alumni Association. In 2013, she was appointed to the University of Georgia’s Alumni Association Board of Directors and designated as an Ally Spouse by the Military Partners and Families Coalition. A strong supporter of civic engagement, Vivian serves on the selection committee for the prestigious Lincoln Awards and is the Quality of Life Sub-Committee chair for the Virginia Military Advisory Council, a position she was appointed to by Governor Terry McAuliffe in 2014. Vivian is married to a Naval Officer and they have two young boys, ages 9 and 12. Vivian's definition of success: personal success is rooted in knowing each day I've used my skills and my resources to help at least one person and then get to go home to a family where I know we are raising our children to have empathy and sociological imagination. Things we chat about with Vivian Greentree: Success and growth wasn't a straight line Being a realist, believing in the best of humanity Doing a Ph.D program at night while husband was deployed for a year and having 2 kids under 3. opportunities are often wrapped up in a disguise. Scott is an entrepreneur who has a passion for introducing new ways of thinking coupled with structure and frameworks to promote growth for non-profit and community minded organizations. He is a devoted husband and father to, what he terms, “his girls” Misty (wife), Macey and Marlee. Scott is a lover of life that tries to make everyday meaningful in his life and the lives of those he comes into contact with. What you'll hear in this episode: Scott is a home-grown Texan going down an unexpected path. How his passion as an entrepreneur in the business world allows him to help non-profits and community-minded organizations How Scott has already helped raise MILLIONS of dollars for organizations, and how he dreams of going international with his business one day Scott turns to Philippians 4:6-7 for inspiration, especially when he feels the stress and anxiety of running a business. A favorite quote of Scott's is: “The day is over and I'm leaving the office with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. What have I achieved?” How Scott's work gives a great sense of purpose as he touches many lives through the organizations he helps How Scott stumbled upon this business, with each step on the trajectory leading him into work with local governments and non-profits Scott says the best thing about his day is working with people who are passionate for a cause; this gives great meaning to what he does. Of the Seven Mountain culture, Scott focuses primarily on the business mountain. In a nutshell, he helps organizations set up the framework for raising money, being effective, running at an optimal level, and growing their impact. One of Scott's biggest challenges is the trap of people-pleasing, of caring TOO MUCH what others think about him. This has given Satan a stronghold over him at times. Scott realizes that he is totally dependent upon God, and nothing else, being used as a vessel for His service. How Scott has learned not to seek his validation in other people or material things The pivotal moment for Scott was when he shifted in his business from working with local governments to non-profits. Seeing lives touched let him know THIS is the right thing. How Scott has realized that his “ministry” is everywhere and in everything he does What is your biggest strength? “Administration and mercy—these are exactly the gifts I need to do what I do.” What is your biggest weakness inside that strength? “Being impatient with people! Wanting everything to happen NOW and not realizing that it's a process.” What is God stirring up inside of you right now? “In the last 1-2 years in helping others, I've realized that ministry is not limited to the pulpit or to church work. Ministry is in everyday life.” Kung Fu Round Questions: How do you share the gospel in your everyday life? “My goal is for every person I contact to SEE the difference in me and want to know what it is. I want them to know that it's God who makes the difference.” What daily habit do you have that contributes to your solid walk with God? “I have a quiet time every morning. I read the devotional, Jesus Calling; I read scripture, pray, and take time to seek God. When I enter my office every day, I hit my knees and give my day and my business to God.” What meaningful book have you read recently? Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy What resource have you found helpful that you can share with our listeners? “It's not one resource in particular. It's to never stop learning. I have a goal to read two books each month—educational material that helps me grow.” What advice would you give to the “younger” you? “I would speak to myself at age 21 and say, ‘Grow up a little bit, man! Don't seek validation from others, but go to God. He is the ONLY source of true validation'.” What parting advice do you have for our listeners? “Wake up every day and LIVE it. Have a passion for what you do. If you can't, then figure it out, find it, and start LIVING it!” Resources: www.caldwellbusinessgroup.com Find Scott on Twitter, Facebook, and Linked In as Caldwell Business Group. www.amazon.com : Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
