As we go throughout our lives, we more often than not feel a sense of belonging at our places of work, within our families, and the people we choose to spend our time with. But sometimes we just don't “fit in”. That can make things awkward, it can stifle us and it can impact our mental health in some seriously negative ways. But what's the difference between belonging and fitting in? And what can we do to remove the uncomfortable and limiting feelings we get when we don't? In today's episode, I will distinguish the difference between what it means to belong vs “fit in”, how acting intentionally can work for us or against us, and how giving up the effort to “fit in” leaves more energy for things that truly matter. -- You Do Not Need to “Fit In” to Belong | Nila Conzen (Article) Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brene Brown (Book) Join The Forge! Do you ever struggle with loneliness? Do you struggle to find “your people” with each move? Do you sometimes feel like no one knows the “real you”? Author and researcher Brené  Brown suggests that at the heart of loneliness is a feeling of disconnection and the absence of meaningful social interaction. But how do we make genuine connections that allow us to be our true selves, rather than settling for fitting in? In today's episode, I unpack Brené Brown's book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, and specifically what this means for us as military spouses. We discuss: What true belonging is How to cultivate true belonging as a military spouse What true belonging actually looks like in real life What happens when we put these tips into practice If you are ready to turn isolation into a life of impact, then this episode is for you! What is vulnerability according to Brené Brown? “The definition of vulnerability is uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. But vulnerability is not weakness; it's our most accurate measure of courage. When the barrier is our belief about vulnerability, the question becomes: 'Are we willing to show up and be seen when we can't control the outcome?'When the barrier to vulnerability is about safety, the question becomes: 'Are we willing to create courageous spaces so we can be fully seen?”-- Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone In this episode, we talk more about what vulnerability is and isn't, but also how you can learn to expose yourself, little by little, in order to live a life you've dreamed of.Would love to have you join the conversation on IG: instagram.com/jaim91Or come hang in my Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/teamjaim91

In this podcast, Geneva Robins and Rita Reddy talk about change! Ugh, sometimes it's the actual worst. There can be some real gross parts of change, but some delicious bits too. Rita shares a lesson from her work in Trilotherapy, the Apple Tree Cycle. The metaphor of the apple tree cycle is a simple yet profound way of understanding change as an organic and natural part of learning and growth. You get a gentle way of looking at each stage of the cycle of life without fear or resistance. It's a really supportive and transformational Trilotherapy tool. What is Trilotherapy?Created by Zen Master Nissim Amon, Trilotherapy is based on his own training in Zen Buddhism and meditation plus elements of his learnings in Western psychology and Eastern philosophies. It's a retreat-based program with a series of workshops that can be taught individually or in a group setting. The main philosophy of Trilotherapy is that you have a Center self that you're born with and come into every life with, and two inner children, your rational mind and emotional mind. And our job in Trilotherapy is to help you figure out what place you're making decisions from; to help you make decisions from the Center, which is always your true self. Your two inner children, we call them your rational mind and your emotional mind; they create your personality. They take in all the information and process it, and then you're the one who's going to be making the decisions. Sometimes we're allowing these children to make the decisions for us. But the idea is to parent ourselves and these inner children to help us make the best life decisions. Trilotherapy helps us figure out where we're coming from and why we decide certain things. How do you deal with change? At times we all have to deal with enormous amounts of change and the feelings that come along with it, like grief and loss. Big changes can really challenge our ability to let go.Nobody likes change... unless it's the good parts of change! When the bad parts come around, which are always going to come around, that's when things get really hard. We sometimes misname change to be only the gross parts we don't like, but there is beauty in the whole cycle.Embrace Change with the Apple Tree CycleThe Apple Tree Cycle is a Trilotherapy tool to explore the natural cycles of change in our lives, so it's not so scary. The stages of change are represented by the metaphor of the life cycle of the apple tree:seed and gestation, which is the new idea or start of something new;plant and growth stage; where your new creation is expanding;fruiting and enjoying the creation;death, where the creation is complete, the fruit falls, and the tree dies; it involves letting go;rotting, which is the disintegration and complete release of the creation back to fertilizer; andback to gestation, the cycle always returns to the start.Everything goes through the apple tree cycle, even tiny little mini ones. You might go through 10 of them a day. It's basically the beginning, the middle, and the end of anything that's going on, whether it be a relationship or going to the store and getting groceries. We tend to like the beginning parts of the cycle when the little sprout is happening. There's forward progress like things could change; that'll be amazing. Then the growth part, you see things take form, and everything is expanding. And then, in the fruiting stage, you're starting to enjoy some of the things you've created and put into motion. But then there's the rotting and death stages, where in the apple tree cycle, the apple's fallen off of the branch and is now in the process of letting go and returning to the earth. It's when things degrade and turn into fertilizer. And so that's usually when we feel like poop! But it's also so beautiful because you know that poop is nourishing. It's food for the seed. And that's what we need. And there's beauty in it, even though it's the stinky gross part of change. Gratitude helps us Embrace ChangeThe Signs of Spring is a process from Geneva's book The Secret Art of Happiness: Change Your Life with the Reiki Ideals. It's a gratitude process that you use daily. It is especially helpful when you're in an uncomfortable place, and you're the in the turmoil of change. But even in those places, there's forward movement and progression, tiny sprouts and signs of spring. And when you start noticing them, tiny little signs that things are turning in your favour, then it can be the fuel that pulls you through the rough parts. Even at the lowest point, there's some little thing you can look to that says, "This is a temporary state. And it's going to get better." Life is a Cycle, just like the Apple TreeOur western world thinks after the end is nothing. It is a very linear view; the start and the end never link back up with each other. The end is final, and there's nothing but the abyss of loneliness and terror on the other side of death and rotting. But with the apple tree cycle, what's on the other side of that death and rotting is more life. This is the life-death-life cycle, which comes up in one of Geneva's favourite books, Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The book deconstructs fairy tales in a Jungian and poetic analysis. It turns out that many ancient stories exist to help us so that we don't need to fear the death and loss stages of our lives. Because it is in the death and rotting stages where we get our strength and courage. Sometimes in times of hardship and struggle, we come together as a community. We reach out to other people and start learning and connecting with our inner and outer resources in new ways that maybe we wouldn't have before the change happened. The Wilderness of ChangeWhere do you find that comfortable place with the uncomfortable? Having an understanding of what stage you are in helps you to release fear. You can spot when you leave the cycle or cut things off before they grow. By reflecting on the apple tree cycle, you can see where you may self-sabotage. You get an opportunity to notice your patterns in the cycle and what part of the cycle gives you the most trouble. Seeing things from a different angle can make all the difference. Your Center might know more than the emotional or rational mind. But when we choose from the Center self, it might make you stand out, which puts you out into the wilderness. This is incredibly uncomfortable but is also often very necessary. We have to be willing to find our own way to our own Center.Even the people that love you the most aren't able to know the core of your own heart. And when they make kind suggestions, they can only recommend what has worked for them. It's not a replacement for following your own guidance. Only you can know your own heart. Sometimes people do what they think they should do rather than what is calling their own heart forward. They end up living a life that doesn't fit them. They're fitting in rather than really belonging. The book Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown is really helpful if this sounds familiar. In order to truly belong, you have to first belong to yourself completely. That is where choosing from the Center self can lead you to that wholehearted life.Reiki supports people through change. Reiki is very gentle and supportive. It helps connect you with this eternal, everlasting energy that supports all things. Reiki is connected to the energy within the fabric of life itself and the continuity of the cycles. It taps us into this eternal yet timeless frequency. And in that frequency, there's this moment of real peace and grace. And with great loss, sometimes it's only that which heals. There's a moment where we go into the infinite. We get comfort and peace with that transition stage so we can honour the love underneath the pain. Reiki helps set the grief to rest and let go with respect, love, and grace. We get to a place of peace, comfort, and acceptance. We're always here to help you no matter what part of the apple tree cycle you are in. We can cheer you on when things are going amazing and let things those roots deepen and ripen. And we can also help you process any pain that might pop up. You can get a bit of help, soothing, and support no matter where you are. You're doing great.  We'll have a new episode every month! Please subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Hi, Rita.RITA REDDY: Hello.GR: I'm so glad you can make it here today. Rita is a Reiki Master and Trilotherapist here in Calgary with me at LunaHolistic. And today, we're going to talk about a whole pile of things connected to spirituality and Reiki. Before we dig into that, we'll start with a little collective breath of gratitude, so just a little mini-meditation. If you happen to be driving, you can skip ahead, or just, you know, don't close your eyes or anything. But otherwise, if you're in a nice, safe space, you can gently close your eyes and take a few inner breaths. Just settling in, letting all of your energy regroup and reground. Feeling a sense of gratitude and wonder for the planet that we are sitting on. Feeling the energy below you rise up to greet you from the centre of the Earth to support you. Rising up through your body and out the top of your crown, and radiating all around you like a beautiful rainbow, completely held in safety, love, and support, yet also feeling free to expand. Sending some gratitude to all of the plant life that surrounds you, to the air, that fresh air the plants create, to the animals and birds and insects that live all around you, the life within everything. And sending out some gratitude to all the people that inhabit your world. And, of course, gratitude for your own heart for being here with us today. Thank you for joining us. Ah! And when you're ready, you can open your eyes. Ah! That's nice. How was that for you, Rita?RR: Oh, yeah, that was great. GR: Good, yeah. We've got some nice, juicy questions to explore and ponder. Before we jump straight into that, maybe we can start with what drew you into Reiki?3:17  What drew you into Reiki training?RR: Yes. I love this question. Because I was curious. I was in a healing kind of journey. And then I was meeting all these people who knew about many different things, like Reiki and Trilotherapy and other therapies. Yeah, in the circle that I was in, I came across some people who were doing Reiki on each other. And I asked them what that was, and they kind of showed me you know, like, what it was. And then I was curious. So, I found your course. I can't even remember how – maybe it was through Kim Johnston. Yeah, I just signed up because I was curious about what Reiki was, and how I fit in, because most of the people were telling me, "Oh, you'd be really good at Reiki because you're already, like, tapping into things that that you can tap into way better with Reiki training." And so, I was like, "Cool, what is it, like, what's Reiki training?" And so, I looked into all different kinds, and I found yours. And I really liked the way it was set up, like with 10 sessions of, like, going through your chakras, and I'd just gone through another course about chakras. And I was really like, on this like, path of learning about that. And so, I loved how your workshops were set up. And so, I, yeah, I signed up for the first one, and then of course, I was in! I was hooked. GR: [laughs]RR: And so, I wanted to know everything about it. I wanted to become a Reiki healer as well. And so, here I am.  GR: Yay!RR: Yeah!GR: You are a Reiki master, and a good one. [laughs] And one of the first couple of students I ever taught, too. RR: Yeah.GR: So, it's been really, really cool to get to go on this ride with you, which is awesome. RR: Yeah! GR: Oh, so great. I love it. I love the winding paths that we find our way into spirituality. RR: I know, right?GR: And I find it's like a little path that's sort of dotted with these gems, and you just get led from courses to classes to books to – you get the resources you need all along the way, which I think is amazing, so.RR: Yes.GR: Yeah. So great. Well, thank you. Thank you for being here. One of the things that we were talking about, and something that we've talked about quite a bit, you and I have talked about this a lot. And your take on this has really helped me, which actually comes from your Trilotherapy background, which maybe, before I ask the question, you can just briefly, like, what is Trilotherapy, and how do you use it to help yourself and help other people?6:24  What is Trilotherapy? How does it work?RR: Trilotherapy is created by Zen Master Nissim Amon. I met him in Calgary, but he lives in Tel Aviv in Israel. He basically invented Trilotherapy based on a bunch of his own training in Zen Buddhism and meditation. And he uses elements of his learning about Western psychology, and then Eastern philosophies. And he brought them together in this program called Trilotherapy, which is basically like another set of workshops. It's a retreat-based program. But at LunaHolistic, obviously, I teach it as well, on a one-on-one basis. The main idea is that you have a centre-self that you were born with and you come into every life with. And then you have these two children that are like your rational/irrational brain and your emotional brain, your emotional mind. Those three aspects work together to kind of guide you through decisions in life. And our job in Trilotherapy is to help you figure out what place you're making decisions from and kind of get you to making decisions from the centre, your centre-self, which is always your true self and your highest self. Yeah, your two inner children, we call them your rational mind and your emotional mind, are, they create your personality, and they take in all the information and process it and then, yeah, you're the one who's going to be making the decisions. And sometimes we're making decisions and allowing this child to make the decision for us. But the idea is to, like, parent ourselves and parent these children to help us make best decisions for our lives and figure out, like, where we're coming from and why we're deciding certain things.GR: I love it. It's so great. I find it's quite transformational. And it shifts your perspective with these sort of beautiful analogies, probably drawing from the Zen Buddhism aspect, where you have these very simple, seemingly simple-on-the-surface things, but they have very, very deep roots. And they can, I find when, you know, we've worked together on a few sessions, that it helps really flip my script. And, like you said, like, it [can] get me from, you know, my two little bratty children that, when, like [laughs] – they're both throwing temper tantrums and fighting with each other, and get me back into the centre where I can actually just care for them in a loving way with compassion, and sort of give them what they need without giving in to them.RR: Yeah, totally.GR: Just like bratty little children are just, you know, they just have needs that are unmet, and meeting them in a way that is nourishing rather than addictive, you know. RR: Yes! Totally.GR: Like the toddler in Superstore throwing a fit about not getting candy, when really they need a nap, right? So, it's like coming from that wisdom place. You give them the nap. You don't give them the candy, you know, and from an adult perspective – you go for a walk, you don't have a beer, you know. [laughs]RR: Exactly.GR: Or whatever example of numbing you might use. Yeah.RR: Exactly, yeah.GR: Yeah, amazing. So, the question that comes in from many people who are dealing with a lot, as we all are, because just, our whole world changed, and is changing again and changing again, and it just seems like a constant, a constant thing dealing with outer-world changes, but then also inner world changes as we sort of adapt to things like losing jobs and changing relationships, and all kinds of things are kind of up for people, which is just sort of life these days. [laughs] But for you, Rita, what are some tools that you use to deal with this enormous amount of change, and maybe the feelings that come along with it, like grief and loss and an ability to let go, like, what works for you, or what's your go-to thing in your back pocket when you're in that mucky change business? Ugh, who likes change?RR: Ugh, nobody likes change, unless it's the good parts of change. Change has so many good parts, and then when we have bad parts come around, which are always going to come around, that's when things get, like, really hard. That's what we call change, sometimes, like, we misname change to be like, the gross parts. 11:23  The Apple Tree Cycle is a Trilotherapy workshopBut my tool, my main tool, I think, that has been coming up so much for me lately, is the Apple Tree Cycle. And it's a Trilotherapy workshop that Nissim taught us. And I teach myself pretty much all the time. It's basically going through the stages of an apple tree, from the seed being fertilised and the gestation period of a seed, to the growth and the plant coming out. Growth is the next stage and then fruiting. So, all the fruits of your labour, and then the inevitable death of the cycle, and then a rotting of the cycle. And then back to that gestation period, where something new comes about. And you know, everything, everything goes through the cycle, even tiny, little, mini-ones. Like, you might go through like 10 of them a day, you know, like, it's just basically the beginning, the middle, [and] an end of anything that's going on, whether it be a relationship or going to the store and getting groceries.GR: Yeah, we tend to, but not always, like the beginning parts of the cycle. Like, when the little sprout is happening, it's like, you can see, oh, there's forward progress, like, things could change, that'll be amazing. And then the growth part, you get to see, like, how putting things into action are expanding. And then in the fruiting stage, it's like you're starting to get to enjoy some of the things that you've created and put into motion. But then there's that rotting and death stage, where, you know that, in the apple tree, it's like the apple's fallen off of the branch, and is now in the process of letting go and returning to the earth, which is like the fertilisation. And so, that's usually when we feel like poop. [laughs] You know?RR: Yeah, because we're turning into poop. GR: We're turning into poop. [laughs]RR: But it's also so beautiful, because you know that that poop is nourishing, and it's food for the seed. And that's what we need. And that's like, there's beauty in it, even though it's like the stinky, gross part of it. GR: Mm-hmm. Yeah.RR: Yeah, and I just thought of something, I think in your book, The Secret Art of Happiness. You talk about the Signs of Spring. Is that where you talk about it? GR: Yes.RR: Yeah, so Signs of Spring are so wonderful. And that's where the little sprouts come out. And yeah, everyone loves that. When you're going to plant like, that's your favourite part. You're like, it's happening, it has a plant!GR: It's happening. Yeah, yeah. And that Signs of Spring is like, we do that, for me, I do that process which is basically like a gratitude process. You're noticing that, even before you see any change happening, you're in an uncomfortable place, you're dealing with the grief and loss and the turmoil and you're in a, maybe even a stuck place and you don't like it, you know. Sort of like the winter season, where it's just like, there's just snow and ice and it's miserable and I don't like where I am, I'm uncomfortable. But even in those places, there's forward movement and progression. And when you start noticing them, like tiny, tiny little signs that things are turning in your favour, and then really heaping love and gratitude on those things, it can be the fuel that sort of pulls you through the rough parts, so that even when I'm feeling at my lowest point, there's some little thing that I can look to that says, "This is a temporary state and it's going to get better." Which, I like the idea of a cycle, is that – and that might be with, like, the way the rational mind likes to think about things, which is very linearly, that there's, that it's a line, it's, we have a start, we have a middle, and we have an end. The start and the end never link back up with each other. The end is final, and there's nothing but the abyss of loneliness and terror on the other side [laughs] of that death and rotting. And with a cycle, it's like, no, what's on the other side of that death and rotting is more life, and more growth, and more fruits, and then more death, and then more life. And it's this life-death-life cycle, which comes up in one of my favourite books. So, the book that, you know, totally changed my life is Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. And she talks a lot about, she sort of deconstructs fairy tales, in this sort of Jungian analysis. And I love, I love, love, love that book. And she talks a lot about this life-death-life cycle. And so, that we don't need to fear, sort of, these death parts of our lives when there's a feeling of loss or there is actual loss that we have to process. Because in that, there is beauty, like you'd said, and that's also where we get our strength, our courage. Sometimes in the times of hardship and struggle and turmoil is when we come together as a community. You know, we reach out to other people, we start learning and connecting with our inner resources and our outer resources in new ways that maybe we wouldn't have before all of the change happened, so yeah. Yeah, I love that. I love, it's such a neat, it's such a neat metaphor, for sure.17:40  The Apple Tree Cycle during the fruiting stage, and seasonal cycles.RR: And I'm really glad you said the thing about winter, because also in Nissim's workshop, and in Trilotherapy, in the Apple Tree Cycle during the fruiting stage, we can think of things as having seasons, so interests are like spring, summer, fall, and winter. And then again, so they're, the mini cycles are happening even though, you know, the larger tree is still here, you can see, like, the different mini-cycles happening in the fruiting stage. And that's okay, too. And just like you use the apple tree, or the apple falling off of the tree, rather than the tree dying itself. So, that's the seasonal cycle, and so there's also that. And you can find those in life and in your cycles that are happening.GR: Yeah, I find it's such a gentle way of looking at it that can help, you know, I find those, like, "reframes" really useful to just, seeing things from a different angle sometimes can make all of the difference. But yeah, when you get to that, like, moment, though, where you're right in it, you know? [laughs] Like, when you're in that, like, moment of discomfort, where do you find that comfortable place with the uncomfortable, you know? [laughs]RR: Yeah, so I think having an understanding of what stage you're in, I mean, sometimes, you know, people will sabotage, in my diagram, in my mind [laughs] of the Apple Tree Cycle, there's all these exit doors at each stage, where we might jump ship, like, you know, you're in a new relationship, and you're going through that growth stage, and you're ready for commitment. But you're so afraid of it, because there's sometimes these little traumas that come into play that are like, you know, “I'm not worthy of that,” or “I can't commit right now.” And you're just like, you jump, you take a perfectly good, budding relationship, and you might say, you know, “I don't deserve that,” or “I can't have that right now.” And you leave and you exit and you fast-forward to the death and the rotting. But having that awareness, you know, over time that that's what you're doing, I think, like, sometimes people get these, like, lightbulb moments where they're like, "I always leave the relationship at this stage." And things like that, like, just noticing the patterns in your cycles and noticing where, you know, you kind of have the most trouble. And I mean, I think I was telling you this earlier that most people come to get healing or Reiki or help when, or, you know, like in therapy, when they're in that death and rotting stage, because those are the grossest parts. And like, that's when you're like, "Can I handle this? I can't handle this." 20:32  Understanding the cycles of your life. The positive parts are where, you know, you see the Signs of Spring, and you're growing, and you're having fruits of your labour, like, you know, you're loving the person you just met, and you move in together, and you get engaged, and you're having a wedding. And like, those are such beautiful parts. And like, those are the parts that are even idealised in media and everything, and nobody loves talking about the breakup and the decline of the relationship. And nobody loves talking about stuff like that, no, but nobody loves being in it. [laughs] So, understanding the cycle, and like, that's like, and the stage you're in, is so important for healing and for making it through to the, to the next, you know, the next relationship or the next business idea, or whatever, like, that didn't work out. And so, the part where you're, it's not working out, you can also, once you recognize the cycle, you can jump out at that death stage and be like, "Nope, I know that this is dead, and I am letting it go and I'm moving on. And I want to start something new." And, you know, sometimes your next cycle is already percolating within your current cycle. And so, you can do that. You can like, fast-forward things if you are, have an awareness about what's happening.GR: Yeah, the change that you choose, you know, of the relationship metaphor, because instead of, you know, seeing it through all the way through its fruit and rotting, it's like, you might know, like, your centre, your core, might know at the first date that this is not the fruit you want to be picking, you know. RR: Yup.GR: That this isn't leading you forward, and it can be really scary to say "no" to somebody or to let somebody down or to end something or step away, because we don't want to make them feel bad. We don't want to hurt them. You know, it's uncomfortable for us. Why would we ever leave something that looks so good on paper, you know. And I think we can allow our rational and emotional minds to sort of pull us off our centre when we know deep inside what we truly need and want. And turning inward and listening to your inner wisdom is the piece, which is your inner guide knows what part of the cycle you're on and if this is a cycle you need to be on for your soul's growth. RR: Yeah.GR: And, because anything else won't feel right, you know. Even if there's discomfort, I think there's, when you're doing something that is meaningful and matters to you, and, in whatever capacity, there's joy in every stage. And I like that you talked about the exit points – there's joy in every stage, and there's also terror in every stage. [laughs] You know.RR: Yeah, right. GR: And that, you know, and some people might not even want to plant that seed, you know. Don't even think about things being better, because then I might hope for things to be better, and then my hopes might be dashed. And then it's a very painful place. So, don't even start to change anything because it might turn out badly. So, knowing where, which part of the cycle stops you, and that only really bothers us when it sort of bothers us deep inside. It's like, "No, but I'm longing for that. There's something inside me that maybe writes, wants to write that book." Or maybe you want to have children one day, or maybe you don't want to have children one day and maybe you want to travel the world and explore things and you don't want a relationship or any of that stuff, but you think you have to because that's what you've been told to do. So, you keep on hopping out because you don't actually fit in that cycle. And you need to find your, what calls your own heart and spirit forward, which can represent a big shift and change in, you know, changing things that, changing things from the status quo. So, maybe you're not an apple tree - maybe you're an orange tree, you know, [laughs] and you're not living, maybe you're not a tree at all, you know? [laughs]RR: Yeah, yeah. Totally. GR: Some other living being that has its ... RR: Some other organic thing is what everything is.GR: Yes, yes. Maybe you're a fish in the sea, and you need to swim. [laughs] Just be in freedom.RR: Yeah, or fly, like you're a bird and you want to fly. And that's, like, you're not rooted in that same sense that a tree is rooted. Yeah. And if they do, like, they're not rooted, but they're having these organic experiences and like, having this cycle where, yeah, it's true, like, it doesn't fit into the formula. That's a really interesting point, too. I was gonna say, about exiting too early – so, when I was talking about fast-forwarding, you could technically, you know, like, you're having a relationship, you know, you've been in it for 20 years, and then you jump out, and you make a new one with somebody, like, tomorrow. That's probably too early, because you also need to go through, sometimes, the death and the rotting stage, and sometimes people avoid it. And so, it's really important to know if you're avoiding something, or if you're actually aware of, like, what your needs are during those stages. And yeah, if you're really, like, processing and allowing your, kind of, spirit to, like, heal and become new again and be ready for the new cycle.26:41  What happens if you decide to leave early?GR: So, if you do decide to leave early, so, at the germination stage, it's like, "Oh, I tried this thing, I sampled a bit of life. This isn't for me, and I know it isn't." Letting yourself go through the, completing the cycle, and knowing that the part of the cycle that we avoid, tend to avoid the most is the death and rotting stage. So, it's like, letting it rot and letting it turn to compost and letting it get into the space where you're truly okay with not sampling that bit of life, you know. And processing that, you know, sometimes it's a processing that by not wanting to sample that bit of life, that maybe is part of a cultural norm or a stereotype or whatever it is, that there's another rotting that happens underneath that, which is that by choosing myself, sometimes it puts me at a distance from structures and, you know, traditional supports. And maybe it also makes me stand out a little bit, which puts you out into the wilderness a little bit, which is incredibly uncomfortable, but is also often very necessary when we're going through massive change, you know. We have to be willing to find our way to our own centre. I think of it, like, with one of the things I share a lot in Reiki is the importance of following your own heart, because even the people that love you the most can't know the core of your own heart. RR: No, yeah.GR: And when they make suggestions, which might be very kind, loving, helpful suggestions, they only have the capability of recommending what has worked for them, or what they've seen work for other people. RR: Yeah.GR: And it's not a replacement for following your own guidance and knowing, and recognizing that when people are offering kind suggestions, you know, you might have a real reaction. It's like, "Ahh! Stop telling me what to do!" And that's okay, like I'm greeting that reaction, because all it is is that it isn't in sync with what your heart is telling you to do, but it is in sync with their hearts. And so, sometimes what I find is that when people do what they think they're supposed to do, they're the good girl or the good boy or the good person, genderless person, that they do what they feel they ought to do or they should do, rather than the thing that is calling their heart forward. They end up living a life that doesn't fit them. They're fitting in rather than really belonging. And I really love the book Braving the Wilderness by Brene Brown, because she talks a lot about that concept that in order to truly belong, in order to truly feel that peace and harmony, you have to first completely belong to yourself. And when you completely belong to yourself, then when people connect with you, you feel that true connection.30:06  How would you support someone through the gross parts of change with Reiki?RR: How would you support someone through the gross parts of change, or the really good parts of change with Reiki? Like, how would we use Reiki to support people through change?GR: Yeah, what I love about Reiki is that sometimes you can have the awareness, but it still doesn't shift the feeling, because the feelings are, get really locked in there, and they can be really complex. So, there is that, sort of, embracing and respecting, sort of, the grief parts of loss, like the grief, the loss, that sort of death and rotting. And sometimes it can be processing actual deaths of people that you know and love, and that represents, sort of, a very big, massive change that you didn't get to choose, but is part of the inevitable, organic nature of our being, is that all things will age, and all things will also die. And in that passing away, it creates space for transformation and growth. It's a change in that person's energy from one state to another state. The grief we feel when somebody we love passes is there because we love them. It's somebody passing away, but we can also feel that grief when we transition from a job or a child goes from one grade in school to another grade in school, you know, or switches schools, and we're supporting a kid through, you know, if we're parents, supporting a kid through that change, and we can see them, basically every day, walking further and further away from us, which is difficult. [laughs] You know? And can bring lots of tears. There's some really huge losses, and there's also many smaller losses, but respecting that "passing away", that there's an ending of a cycle. And that the reason that we feel a lot of grief around it is because we care so much. And so, it's like an honouring and respecting the feeling. And one of the things that I love about Reiki is that it's really, really soothing. And it's very gentle and supportive, and helps connect you with this sort of eternal, everlasting energy, the energy that supports all things, that's within the fabric of life itself, and is the continuity of the cycles, that taps us into this eternal yet timeless frequency. And in that frequency, there's this moment of real peace and grace. And with great loss, sometimes it's only that that heals it. There's a moment where we let go into the infinite. But it's like we get some comfort and peace with that transition stage so that we can honour the love that's underneath it. And we can process the pain that's overtop of the love. And when we process that pain and trauma, what we're left with is the gifts. We're left with the strength and the resilience and all of the things that we've learned. And we basically, you know – fully processed, any emotion at its core turns into wisdom. And so, then we can take the gifts, take the lessons, what did we learn? And the last cycle through the Apple Tree Cycle, and then we can incorporate that, we can take all of the good experiences, we can hold the love close to our heart, we can hold the lessons and the experience close to us. And then we can let everything else go. We can shut it and let it be released. And that's the other part that's amazing with Reiki is it helps clear off the stuff that's covering up all of the other good stuff or the nice feeling stuff. And it can sort of safely discharge and, kind of, setting it to rest, really, and honouring it, you know. There's this memorialising it or placing it in a place of respect and love and grace, and letting it go to a place of peace and comfort and acceptance. And that might take many times, you know, there's big things that take a lot to fully process and heal, and just giving yourself that space of like, "Oh, I'm grieving. I'm grieving this loss and grieving is okay. It's uncomfortable. But underneath grief is love, and underneath pain is lessons and growth and wisdom. And when I understand the lessons, and then when I transform this pain, I will be left feeling whole. I will be in a different place, because there's no 'back'. I will be transformed by this process of change. And I will accept and embrace the new me that is now living this new life. And I will move forward day by day with grace and gratitude and strength." And for me, that's what Reiki gives me. I find I can tap into that space where I don't know how, but I just sort of know deep in my core, the part of me that's eternal, that's seen everything, that part knows I will be okay with this. So, that's what it is for me. How does that sit with you? 35:53  The 'fifths' of the apple tree cycle.RR: Yeah, that's so beautiful. I thought of something, maybe like the rational side of the Apple Tree Cycle, is to think of things in fifths. So, you know, if your relationship was five years, then one of those years is going to be spent on that death period. And then the next is the rotting period. And if your relationship was 25 years, then five of those years are going to be death, and five of them are going to be rotting because five was gestation and five was growth and five was fruit. And you know, you have those 15 years of wonderful change, but what you were saying about the pain, being inside of that loss, and, like, on top of it at the death and the rotting stage, that comes from all of this wonderful, beautiful stuff, the positive stuff, I guess. And yet, this is beautiful, too – the other pieces, like, that all of it becomes fertiliser for the next. And it becomes this nourishing fertiliser for the next cycle and the next thing. Yeah, I love that energy that was there, and it's being, like, released and expressed. Always, like constantly.GR: Yeah. Amazing. Thank you so much, Rita, for joining us here today. TODAY'S GUEST   Susie Wise is a designer, educator, and author, whose wonderful book Design for Belonging: How to Build Inclusion and Collaboration in Your Communities came out in April 2022 as part of the new Stanford d.school book series on core design skills. She teaches at the Stanford d.school and coaches leaders in innovation practices and liberatory design.   EPISODE SUMMARY   In this conversation we talk about: The topic of belonging and how to foster it. The need for belonging in troubling times. What being bored at school taught Susie about herself and the world. How she moved from politics to design and got involved with the Stanford d.school. Her work in the K12 lab at d.school, which combined design thinking with the Montessori education system. Moving from design thinking and education, to liberatory design and design for belonging.   What is belonging? What does it look and feel like? Why does it matter? What is othering, and how does it work? The importance of ritual, storytelling, and spaces, and crafting belonging. As someone who's researched religion through a designer's eye, I love the emphasis on ritual, spaces, and storytelling, and crafting belonging. All of these areas, which religions are famously good at utilizing, whereas secular environments often fail entirely to appreciate. But what if a school made you feel as welcome and as part of the community as the best churches? What if the rituals we crafted and the stories we told included every one of us?   Since this interview with Susie, I've already interviewed a few of her co-authors in the d.school new book series, which will be coming out in the next few weeks.   This conversation is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, entrepreneurs, and activists who are working to change our world for the better. In this week's Safe Home Podcast, Beth talks with Pam Lanhart. She's the Director of the Minnesota based non-profit organization “Thrive Family Recovery Resources” that she started in 2016 to help families with addicted loved ones. She's a certified recovery coach, peer specialist, speaker, author, and advocate for those dealing with substance use disorder - and their families.. She has a book and a FB page called “Praying Our Loved One Home” that our Christian audience members will especially love. She recently lost her young adult son Jake to the disease of addiction, but like our dear friend Heather Ross, she is forging ahead, more determined than ever to help families so they can help their struggling teens and young adults who are battling with addiction. Pam subscribes, as I do, to the CRAFT approach of treating our addicted loved ones with unconditional love and positive regard, no matter where they are in their sobriety. Are you tired of the us vs. them mentality, but don't know how to get out of the cycle? Would you like to be a bridge builder or an ally, but don't know how? Join Rev. Abigail as she unpacks the power of curiosity to transform our world.“We don't even bother being curious anymore because somewhere, someone on "our side" has a position. In a fitting-in culture--at home, at work, or in our larger community--curiosity is seen as a weakness and asking questions equates to antagonism rather than being valued as learning.” — Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone

For those long-time listeners, you know that I love learning and talking about Leadership, and I love bringing guests on the podcast who can share their leadership knowledge and expertise with you, which is why I couldn't wait to share this interview with you! My guest today is Drew Dudley, a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, educator, and speaker. A mentor of mine introduced me Drew's TEDx Talk “Leading with Lollipops” a few years ago, and since then I have shared Drew's Talk with dozens of people. If you haven't watched it yet, I encourage you to do it now. We have a link to Drew's TEDx Talk below. Drew Dudley is someone who has a refreshing perspective on leadership and he is an excellent storyteller. The first time I met him, I couldn't stop smiling, and hopefully by the end of this episode you'll feel empowered to be an extraordinarily intentional leader. Bottom line: Drew Dudley is going to inspire you to become a new kind of leader.  Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client.  -Trace    Timestamps: Thanking the best audience in Water Treatment, the Scaling UP! How long will a drum of sodium hypochlorite last? What factors can impact its shelf life? Do heat and light have an impact?  Will contact with certain metals have an impact? What is chemically happening to the sodium hypochlorite to reduce its shelf life? What are the possible consequences of feeding it after it is beyond its shelf life? How does understanding the shelf life of sodium hypochlorite impact the volume ordered when usage rate is considered? Take this week to think about the shelf life of industrial-strength sodium hypochlorite and what it may mean to you.    Quotes: “When leadership is all about power, influence, and prestige it doesn't connect with young people.” - Drew Dudley “One of the challenges isn't whether we have enough schools teaching Leadership, it's how they're teaching Leadership, especifically, what examples they are using.” - Drew Dudley “The key to any talk, TED or otherwise, is ‘what's the story'?” - Drew Dudley “The Lollipop Moment is about a moment in life where somebody let you know that you had a bigger impact than you are aware.” - Drew Dudley “Useful compelling ideas are inherently motivating.” - Drew Dudley “Every great story begins with an act of stupidity” - Drew Dudley “It's not the goals you've set, it's not the goals you reached; and it's how you behaved in pursuit of these goals.” - Drew Dudley “Moments of personal impact are the only source of power that are accessible to everyone on earth.”  - Drew Dudley “Leadership is not about random acts, it's about conscious acts.” - Drew Dudley “Never allow someone who you know is a person of worth to diminish themselves in front of you.” - Drew Dudley “If you present how you feel about something, it can't be argued with.” - Drew Dudley “Research shows that the more people in an organization that understand their own personal values and can live them everyday, the better the organization is going to be.” - Drew Dudley “In Leadership, you never steal anything, you benchmark a good practice.” - Drew Dudley “Please tell your story, share it with people. Vulnerability leads to extraordinary connections.” - Drew Dudley “As a speaker, what you've been given is the gift of other people's attention and the opportunity to change minds.” - Drew Dudley “When we put ideas out in the world, we have no idea where they're gonna land.” - Drew Dudley   Connect with Drew Dudley: TEDx Toronto - Drew Dudley "Leading with Lollipops" Phone: 1-855-685-3253 Email: support@drewdudley.com Website: www.drewdudley.com LinkedIn: in/dayonedrew Twitter: @DayOneDrew Instagram: @dayonedrew Facebook: @DayOneDrew Book: This is Day One by Drew Dudley   Links Mentioned: TEDx Toronto - Drew Dudley "Leading with Lollipops" Watch more TED Talks on TED and TEDx Talks Audible Cystic Fibrosis Canada The Rising Tide Mastermind AWT (Association of Water Technologies) How to Apply or Renew Your Passport? Rushing into the future can mean missing important data.Data, in this case, doesn't mean points on a graph but really looking in the face of your experiences of the year. The good, the bad, the really hard, and the really exciting ones. This process helps us see patterns over the course of the year so we can see our growth and evaluate what we want to leave behind and what we want to bring with us into the new year.Rushing through the end of the year, avoiding reflection at all costs, making big promises to yourself and others to rush by the hurts and frustrations of the past year, robs us of the chance to find the best next steps for ourselves, our families, and our work.Taking the time to truly reflect on the past year is an act of Self-leadership that can support much-needed unburdening. This liminal space in the in-between of the years can be overrun with expectations and comparisons and feeling inundated with promises of what we need to do or buy that will make this year, the ‘best year ever!'.But there is power in protecting this time, in protecting your brain and your heart, so you can honor your dreams and desires for the upcoming year.Be gentle and tender with yourself, but take this time to prepare a path that is intentional and Self-led instead of reactionary.Take the time to collect the data that will help you translate what is in your head and your heart into experiences that will help you in the next year.Listen to the full episode to hear:Structuring your reflection for your wins, your challenges, and all the things you're grateful for, from good TV to loved onesLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailRebecca's 2021 Favorites:HacksMare of EasttownTed Lassotick, tick…BOOM!VioletBillionsNine Perfect StrangersGrey's AnatomyLaw and Order: SVUNew AmsterdamThe Morning ShowA Boy Called ChristmasOnly Murders in the BuildingThis Is UsCruel SummerYouCobra KaiColin in Black & WhiteFor All MankindAll AmericanFatherhoodGoliathBoschResources:Feeling Blah During the Pandemic? True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.” ― Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone “Belonging is the opposite of loneliness. To attract better clients you need to give greater assurance that you're someone they'd feel comfortable working with. Or even better that they yearn to work with. The best tool for doing this is your biography, but not via the usual "obituary style" litany of accomplishments. Rather, you need to tell the story of who you really are, and why you really care about helping people. Of course, it's hard to tell your own story. In this episode, Megan Hargroder shares the insights about doing this effectively, which she's learned by working with hundreds of solo and small firm lawyers—helping them not just with a website. But also helping them tell the story of who they really are. Today we are talking about one of my most favorite things to discuss — how to be an audacious woman! One of the key qualities that I've noticed that distinguish entrepreneurs who are absolutely killing it from those who say they've “already tried everything” is the willingness to step outside the norm, a willingness to be uncomfortable, and the ability to take bold risks.   My guest today, Chana Ross, is someone whom I deeply respect for her audaciousness, risk-taking personality, and level-headedness. She is definitely no stranger to making bold decisions, stepping into discomfort, and saying, “Hell yes!” when an opportunity comes her way. She is a pelvic health physiotherapist, clinic owner, business coach, podcast host, mother of four, and a pioneer of the virtual practice space.   In this episode, we unpack every aspect of what it takes to be an audacious woman. Chana shares her personal story and career journey, how to know when it is the right time to make an uncomfortable choice, how to live life on your own terms, how to become more decisive and trust yourself, and the key pieces you need to put in place to become more confident, bold, and audacious!   Key Takeaways: [1:12] About today's episode with Chana Ross. [2:34] Welcome Chana Ross to the podcast! [3:30] Chana shares her story and career journey. [8:00] Chana shares her advice on how to know when it's the right time to make an uncomfortable choice vs. the wrong time. [11:25] Would Chana say that she is a good decision maker? [11:57] What informs Chana's ability to make quick decisions? [13:00] Where did Chana learn the ability to self-authorize to become more decisive? [14:58] What is audacious behavior? What does it mean to be audacious? [16:51] If men choose to live life on their own terms, are they being audacious? [17:17] Why audaciousness is such an invaluable quality. [19:51] Chana shares about her audacious role models. [21:58] You can't do everything — and that's okay! [25:05] Some of the audacious decisions that Chana has made in her own life. [28:06] When and how did Chana realize she could trust herself? [29:31] Chana's advice to those looking to become more audacious. [31:00] Chana's key performance indicators! She is incredibly passionate about pelvic and women's health and focused on empowering her clients to achieve their health, fitness, and mental health goals.   Chana's interest in women's health developed during her pregnancies with her four beautiful children. She has since completed extensive training in the treatment of pelvic pain, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, anorectal disorders, chronic pain, and prenatal and postpartum conditions. She is one of a select number of physiotherapists in Canada with specialized training in labor and delivery and treatment of diastasis recti (“mummy tummy”).   Chana also teaches practitioners like you how to provide exceptional virtual care!   Connect with my Guest: Websites: ChanaRoss.com & VitalPhysiotherapy.com Social Media: Facebook & Instagram   If you enjoyed our conversation and would like to hear more: Please subscribe to The Entrepology Podcast on Stitcher or iTunes. It's either a ‘Hell yes!' or it's a ‘No.'” —  Chana Ross   “I really think what's special about [those who are doing amazing things in their lives] is that they are making choices that other people aren't willing to make.” —  Chana Ross   “Choosing on their own terms is really what makes someone audacious.” —  Chana Ross   “You need to surround yourself with other people who are willing to make [bold] choices alongside you … in order to be successful.” —  Chana Ross   “You're truly capable of anything but [you] can't do everything at the same time.” —  Chana Ross

I asked and you voted. And well, it's no surprise that the audience choice for best episode on the podcast over the last 10 years and 300 episodes is one of my favorite people in the world, Brené Brown.   Brené is a vulnerability and empathy expert and has one of the most watched TED Talks of all time on the subject. She is the author of four New York Times bestselling books, one of which, Daring Greatly, has served as a crucial resource for my own creativity. Her book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, is not only a tool for personal development, it's also a blueprint for communication at scale, especially in difficult conversations. We get into how loneliness is related to creativity, why artists have a unique ability to speak truth to bullshit, and setting boundaries without being a jerk. This stuff is critical to maximize the impact you have with your work, art, craft, etc. Brené's ability to stand alone didn't come easy, that was something she trained and practiced. As she discloses in the show, although she often gives speeches to large audiences, she identifies as an introvert and feels the same social anxiety we all experience. If you're new to this episode, I can't wait for you to hear this. If you've already listened a time or two, thanks for selecting it for another listen. I would not be surprised if something hits you that needed to hear right now. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177

We all have a need to belong. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, belonging is smack in the middle of the pyramid, right there with love. This is not to say the two are synonymous. You can certainly feel loved (by your family, a special someone, or a group) and simultaneously feel like you don't quite fit. Yet feeling loved and feeling like you belong are key components to home, to feeling at home. In this podcast, I discuss Brené Brown and her book Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging, in which she reveals one personal experience that she feels is the origin of her life-long sense of not belonging anywhere. Looking at her experience may help us understand our own and better understand our parents. This episode is also available as a blog post at JanPepplerHOME.com and at Finding Home on substack.com. Danielle Reed and I spoke about one of my favorite topics - values. Last year, as we entered the pandemic, I *finally* made time to do a “values exercise”. It was an extension of a smaller values list I had done before. This one, I took the time to think, considering fully the definitions and etymology of each word… I made a lot of word discoveries and discoveries about myself.    I would love to invite you to listen in and consider if maybe it's time for you to make time to discover your core values - and experience the clarity, peace and impact of that on your life! **   “When something is off, pause and go through your values. You'll find the one that is off and all you gotta do in that moment is say, how can I step more towards this right now, right in this moment. Today I am joined by my good friend, Melanie Sutherland. Melanie is a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, an entrepreneur, a mother, and an incredible advocate of women's health.   And what we're talking about today are the things that we wish women knew before they had a baby to optimize their health and optimize their capacity to execute in the world on the other side of motherhood. Traditionally, one of the biggest challenges in healthcare — and especially for those of us who are passionate about upstream preventative health — is that we've been trained by a healthcare system to be reactionary about health. We wait until the problem arises to deal with it. And when it comes to the changes that take place in a woman's body in that prenatal phase and how it influences health on the other side, there are some key elements that you need to be aware of in order to maximize that next phase of life. What is it that every woman needs to know before they have their baby so that their body is in the best possible shape on the other side? This is what Melanie and I are delving into today. This is a powerful and important conversation and I am excited for you to have the opportunity to join in and meet Melanie and hear all of her incredible insights!   Key Takeaways: [1:00] About today's episode! What can we be doing to make sure that our body is in the best possible shape? [14:50] What it looks like to prioritize your health before giving birth. [19:52] How stress and burnout play into our health as new moms. [21:48] Melanie highlights some key components and tangible elements of health that women should be aware of that can be massive game-changers on the other side of giving birth. In today's world of everyone posting their Hollywood reel on their IG and Facebook, it's easy to be bombarded with the feeling of comparison and wondering if you measure up or are good enough. This week, we talk about looking inside ourselves for validation and confidence rather than needing to get it from the outside world. We talk about the cost of constant comparison, why women are set up by society to feel catty and competitive, and why connection and belonging doesn't start with flaunting your latest purchase. We give practical tips on how to start feeling secure from within and building self love that will in turn let others in to see who we really are.   Takeaway: [3:34] Perfectionism is the new form of heroin, not heroism! It is a drug, and one way people try and get their fix is both by trying to show how perfect their life is through social media, and by comparing themselves to how much better or worse they are than others. The first step to responsible social media usage is knowing that most of what people post is curated with this in mind, and not the messy and authentic reality of life. [5:19] There is enough success to go around, so we don't need to be desperate about success. The idea that we have to be scrappy and claw our way to the top is bred from a patriarchal society. The beauty industry is just one of many examples where the industry thrives off people not feeling good enough. Think about how many businesses would go bankrupt if we actually liked the way we looked! [7:28] We would have been your favorite witches, burned at the stake for having our own opinions and ideas! The feeling of wanting to belong and be accepted not only comes from advertising and our upbringing, but also is thread into society as a survival mechanism. [8:12] We think internal validation is extremely difficult, but really it's just that we are not taught how to do it. When we start to name our emotions, we shift from external to internal validation and get a stronger sense of who we are and what we are feeling. [9:15] When you are able to validate yourself, you cling less to the opinions of others. You work with your higher powers and get stronger, resilient, and more confident. [17:05] The more you can give yourself internal validation, the less you fear rejection and judgement from others. It's liberating and frees you up more energy and space to live your authentic life. [21:59] Internal validation is especially important in dating, as it can be challenging for people to feel good enough to stay single until someone worthy shows up. [24:42] The body speaks to us about our negative emotions, and feeling unworthy can show up as many different feelings or symptoms with our body. The first step is raising awareness of our own emotional experience.   Connect With Us:  Joanna Denton | Dr. JJ Kelly  Resources Brene Brown  Brene's book about belonging is called Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to stand alone George Michael “Freedom”

“The earth laughs in flowers.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Guest Introduction:   This is Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast episode 44. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today’s guest is Virginia Joy.  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Each week, join Cindy MacMillan as she interviews coaches, spiritual explorers and celebrants from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.   Virginia Joy is originally from New York. Born in Brooklyn and she knew as a kid she always wanted to help people. Virginia Joy’s interest in Aromatherapy began over 20 years ago…as many who seek alternative therapies. She began using essential oils for common ailments: headaches, colds and flu, and then found herself reaching for essential oils for many other issues in particular - addressing the emotions. This was back in 1983, and there really weren’t many resources to buy essential oils at all.   In 2010 Stillpoint Aromatics was formally birthed.  At Stillpoint Aromatics, she sources and imports over 400 essential oils and extracts! All of Stillpoint's oils are either certified organic, wild-harvested, unsprayed, biodynamically farmed with the rhythms of the earth and or vintage.  Here’s a glimpse of our conversation:  4:35 You know, it really was. It was really an organic journey and looking back, I think those journeys, the unplanned ones are the most rewarding and the most expansive. 6:15 It's a great question and there's a lot of confusion because essential oils are not flower essences and vice versa. 11:17 So even if somebody has, let's say, a back issue, there will always be a pain blend, so to speak for the back. But there's always another reason why that back is flaring. And that's where aromatherapy can add such a different dimension working on the psyche and on those patterns that cause the physical issue.  15:24 But for just grief in general, Melissa (Melissa officinalis) it's also lemon balm is one of the premier oils for shock and trauma. I have a psychiatrist friend that uses Melissa - keeps a couple of drops on a cotton ball in a plastic bag in his office - for when his patients either disassociate or are having a lot of trouble - to breathe that.  16:43 But people say what's your favorite oil? I have to tell you, that the aromas that help shift me are Coppertone or Chinese food. And that's because it reminds me of my mother.  23:00 So in the Metaphysics of Essential Oils class, we do a lot of work on applying the essential oils to the chakras, and to the energetic body, and also how the chakras and energetic body ties into the different physical ailments that we could have. And we also go deeply into the folklore and the history of how the ancients use those plants and trees.  27:52 My website is www.stillpointaromatics.com. I have a couple of Facebook pages: Stillpoint Aromatics, and I also admin, the Ethical Aromatherapy, and my metaphysical one is called the Stillpoint Mystery School, and that's on Facebook. I think it's Stillpoint Aroma on Twitter and then you could also just if you want to just text me, you could just text me directly. It's 928-301-8699. And so that way you could bypass the store.   Thanks for joining us this week on Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast.  Make sure to visit our website, CynthiaMacMillan.com, where you can subscribe to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify so you’ll never miss a show. TODAY’S GUEST: Christine Hoover MA, LPC, NCC With Special Guest: Jaelynn Solomon, Co-Owner of Urban Rubbish Weddings TOPIC: FINDING BALANCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA This interview was fun and informal because I invited Christine and Jaelynn to drop by my house and share their thoughts on a topic that seems to pop up frequently in the flower industry — figuring out how to use social media to grow a business while successfully bypassing the comparison game which often ensues. With Christine's expertise in counseling and Jaelynn's practical experiences as a floral design business owner, I hoped we could share honestly about the struggles and the gifts of social media. And ultimately, I believed we could learn a few things from one another because these are women I trust and respect to talk with honesty about the sticky stuff. I hope you'll grab a cup of tea and plop down on the couch with us for this conversation. You might want to grab a pen and paper because Christine shares some advice I believe is worth noting! Takeaways From Our Conversation: Learn to appreciate the ways social media can help us connect with others Find healthy boundaries and understand that we're not wired to be close to thousands of people (ex. social media followers) Know your emotional limits to avoid compromising real-life relationships Know your personal threshold to avoid overwhelm which will ultimately compromise your creative work Find internal meaning to balance trying to meet external expectations Find value in the strengths of colleagues and learn from them Examine thoughts of resentment about unfairness and find strategies for moving past them Move in close to understand the 'story behind the story' and alleviate jealously or resentment Strive for human connections through business “People are hard to hate close up. Looking outside of our own lens…. A concept I wish was more mainstream. Learning to take a moment and look outside of the small realm of our own reality, only our personal experiences is a tool that will prove more lucrative than you could imagine. In this episode, I dive deeper into the concept that maybe there is a way we can honor our own realities AND be able to not only SEE but honor and maybe even understand where others are coming from as well. This isn’t a discussion meant to change your thoughts, it’s a discussion that I hope will inspire you to get more deeply connected with your own actual belief and understand them more. Understanding yourself and why you choose to plant your flag somewhere creates a level of empowerment I think a lot of us spend most of our lives looking for.In this episode, I also discuss the massive benefit of learning to LEAN IN, because it’s really hard to hate up close.I’m excited about this one so I hope you’ll join me in this powerful talk.Mentioned in this episode:My videoBraving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone

And then, 'how can I apply that learning in my work?'""What occurs to me is that we haven't taught people how to examine their life, how to examine who they are...""One thing I find is critically important is that whole notion of voice...and what are you giving your voice to? What do you choose to do with the emotions that you're feeling? What do you choose to do to honor your values? What do you choose to do to be that voice on behalf of connecting others? Episode 13.....We are relational BEINGS. In fact, you could argue that our reality is created through our relationship to the OTHER. Be it the economy, politics, friendships, sex, partnership, money, success, scarcity, abundance, spirituality....our relationship to the OTHER will always define our experience and thus our REALITY. In a time of huge shifting of paradigms, and drastic changes in life and what is NORMAL, how can our experience in relationship to these changes help us navigate uncertainty and receive life in the fullest way possible? We are in Eclipse Season, Summer Solstice, New Moon Energy and there is an amazing opportunity to let go, tune in and set intention to create through our relationship to the other. Life, Death, Life cycle. We have huge opportunities to shift ourselves right now and literally create our reality. What if we could experience "heaven on Earth" right now? What if we are the absolute creators of our reality and where we place our attention we understand that we are directing energy towards expanding that experience? What if we stepped fully into our sovereignty, personal accountability and our divine ability to shift our relationships to a more elevated, personal experience of abundance, passion and joy and recieve support in all the ways that feels good to us personally and that reflects our beliefs, values, and desires? Could we allow that same process to be true for the OTHER? Can we be willing to step into our own power and in relationship to all things and allow the same to be true for others? When it comes to being a creative, a lot of people can get caught up in the “rules of art”. That’s why I knew I had to bring on Kristy Rice, an entrepreneur and stationery designer who lives by the mantra of "forget rules, forget right, remember joy”. No matter where you are in your creative journey I think this is something we all need to learn or relearn and that’s what we talked about in this episode. Kristy and I also get into how she started her business, her experience of bringing on her first employees and how she creates a sense of order in her day to day life. She talks about why she likes entrepreneurship and the freedom that comes along with it plus how she manages her work while only being in the studio part-time every single week!  (This episode was pre-recorded on Feb 27, 2020)   What’s in this episode: How balance and flexibility helps Kristy craft a life she loves How Kristy transitioned from art as a hobby to a career Figuring everything out on her own as she grew her business Kristy’s experience of learning how to delegate in her business Her first hires in her business How Kristy stays motivated and creatively inspired What Kristy’s day looks like and how she creates a sense of order How to forget about the “rules of art”  Their thoughts on happiness vs. joy Kristy’s experience of working with celebrity clients   About Kristy: Kristy Rice wears many hats: entrepreneur, mama, celebrity invitation designer, stylist…but her first love is watercolor. Kristy Rice began her art career humbly, while hiding under the covers with a flashlight as a 6 year old girl who just wanted to make art, literally day and night. It was clear from the start, Kristy would make her mark on the world with a paintbrush. As a modern watercolor painter whose style and instructional approach has become sought after worldwide, Kristy continues to inspire her community with a growing collection of instructional videos and books (Schiffer Publishing). Her spirited, "forget rules, forget right, remember joy" mantra has brought thousands to enjoy painting watercolor who never believed they could. With a degree in Art Education from the Pennsylvania State University+15 years and counting growing a creative wedding business Kristy's mission is to bring fine art and it's joys into the everyday life of many, has become a fierce passion.   Connect with Kristy: Website | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | Momental Designs | Momental Designs Instagram   Links: The Art for Joy’s Sake Journal by Kristy Rice Painterly Days: The Floral Watercoloring Book for Adults by Kristy Rice Kristy’s Summer Cutting Garden: A Watercoloring Book (Kristy’s Cutting Garden) by Kristy Rice Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown Hope you’ve enjoyed this episode! This week we have seen families stripped from each other at our border. This is a human crisis, but this crisis did not just start this week. If we zoom out we will see a lot of anger, and a lot of hatred, and a lot of dehumanization for those who are considered "other." In this episode we explore how we got to where we are, we discuss the dangers of dehumanization, privilege and intersectionality, compassion (for ourselves and others), empathy, and the different ways in which we can show up as activists. I end the episode exploring how we can talk to our children about privilege and activism. In this episode I mention several resourses including the work of Brené Brown and her book Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone. I also share the work of  Dr. Kristin Neff on self-compassion. In terms of privilege I mention Peggy McIntosh's article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack and Beverly Tatum's book Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria: And Other Conversations About Race. Michael Ventura's Applied Empathy work is also discussed, and raceconscious.org is shared as a resource for talking to our kids about race and privilege. Resources for finding ways to support what is happening at our borders can be found here.

Hey ass kickers! Well, after nearly 10 years of blogging, 5 years and 228 podcast episodes, I’m FINALLY doing a favorite things episode! I tried to record both as a regular podcast episode AND video, but alas, I had an technology FAIL on the video side, so these images will have to do! So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite things… Misc. Golden Girls coasters. I don’t even think I need to sell you on this one. Hair and beauty: Nume Curling Wand- When I do actually do my hair, I use this curling wand. I’ve had a few different ones, and this one by far is my favorite. I often get comments on my hair and on one occasion was chased down in Target by a breathless woman asking me how I got my curls. Lush’s Sea Salt Spray-- I’ve tried several Sea Salt sprays, even a big brand name that will go unnamed, but they’ve all been a huge waste of money, until I tried Lush’s brand. The smell is amazing, it’s not sticky, and works great. MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix-- I use the powder (BTW, that link will take you to my shade, NC30, but you probably want to go somewhere where they sell it so someone can match your skin tone). Super easy to put on (I use a brush) and I use to even out my skin tone. Add a little blush, eyebrow pencil, and mascara and I’m done. The bralette- Two of my favorites are here and here. Great for the small to medium breasted women who don’t need a whole lot of support. Gold bond hand cream- I feel like such a grandma with this, but… I have really dry skin and can’t stand it when my hands feel dry. I’ve tried approximately 17,000 different hand creams and this one BY FAR is my favorite. It’s not greasy (unless you use way too much), and it works, even through a hand washing. I keep the small tubes in different drawers all over my house, in my purse, and in the car. I don’t consider myself a super techie person, but these are the apps I can’t live without AND they’re all easy to use. Apps I use: Audible-  Great for audiobooks! Need I say more? Goodreads- Organize all the books you’ve read, are currently reading, and want to read. I use it especially for logging books I want to read, and reading reviews from people I know-- as it syncs with Facebook. Voxer- I’m obsessed with this app and have been for years. It’s changed my relationship with my friends for the better! It’s a walkie talkie app that allows you to also text, send images and videos, and gifs. I also use it with my private clients. Podcast app- Duh. Venmo- Pay people and get paid easily with NO FEES. Super easy to set up and use. (I don’t know if I would recommend this for business, but check with your CPA.) Insight Timer- GREAT for meditation, especially for beginners. YogaGlo- Get access to loads of different teachers for yoga and meditation, all from the comfort of home! (Get your first two weeks of YogaGlo FREE when you sign up on YogaGlo.com/KICKASS.) Yoga Studio- Super easy to use Yoga app. The reason I love this is the simplicity. Not a lot of choices, but just enough to get the job done. gTasks Pro- Essential, especially if you use Google Calendar. It syncs to the “tasks” portion of your Google Cal, and is SO easy to use. Books I love: I Thought It Was Just Me: Making the journey from “What Will People Think” to “I am Enough.” By Brené Brown The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go Of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are. By Brené Brown Daring Greatly: How the Courage of Being Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead By Brené Brown Rising Strong: How the Ability to Reset Transforms The Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead By Brené Brown Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone By Brené Brown Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find-- And Keep-- Love.  Find out why you behave the way you behave in relationships and how you can fix when it’s not working. So very eye-opening! 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts. An oldie but a goodie. Easy read and good to find out how you receive love. Great awareness to have not just in romantic relationships but friendships as well. Facing Love Addiction: Giving yourself the power to change the way you love by Pia Mellody Codependent No More: How to stop controlling others and start caring for yourself by Melody Beattie Getting the Love You Want: A guide for couples by Harv Hendrix Keeping the Love You Find: A personal guide by Harv Hendrix Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: How the Quest for Perfection is harming young women by Courtney E. Martin You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the mindset of wealth by Jen Sincero Documentaries: There are SO MANY great documentaries out there, and to be honest, I haven’t watched that many lately, but here are three that have stuck out to me immensely: Miss Representation. Watch this with the men in your life and with your daughters (appropriate age is around 13 years old.) Then, talk about it. The Mask You Live In. Again, watch this with the men in your life and with your sons (again, appropriate age is probably 12 or 13). Then, talk about it. 13th. This is such an important film. According to common sense media, 16 is an appropriate age for this one. http://yourkickasslife.com/230

Optimal Performance Podcast

This week’s episode is a wide ranging conversation with NFL kicker Steven Hauschka. I met Steve when he was playing with the Seattle Seahawks and floating at Float Seattle; now he plays for the Buffalo Bills. He’s got an interesting take on things; he’s a thoughtful guy, a biohacker and always looking for techniques and tips to be his absolute best. We talk about mediation, athletes speaking their minds, techniques for optimal performance, tribalism, life after football, society in general and much more! Podcasting and the Joe Rogan Experience (3:30) Steve has been a long time Joe Rogan's Podcast listener and when he’s always wondered what it was like to be one of the guests. It’s a tricky thing because you could be exposed when you talk for an hour, it is not just a premeditated interview!  That’s what makes podcasts so interesting: it’s actually just a conversation.  That is the beauty of it too.  You really get to know the people and get to see everything. Going Deeper With Athletes (10:00) With publications like Derek Jeter’s Players Tribune, athletes write articles themselves and share their experiences. And may come as a surprise to some that Steve insists that athletes are definitely as human as it gets with just as many flaws and issues as everyone else in the world.  To be able to speak openly or as openly we can think that we can get in the fact that, millions and millions people are going to read exactly what we write. Steve feels like there is a shift coming in the way that we consume media and in the way we understand story telling so that outlets like the players should be in or blogs by athletes because we are so visible and we mean so much to such a giant group of people and they want to hear the opinion about X or Y or Z. If it is all filtered through just blurb after blurb, there is nothing there. Growth And Repair (19:40) Steve says that if we break it down, it's not really that complicated to get like good work out but we see all these information with all those stupid products. People try to sell gym memberships - they don’t care if we go to the gym - they just want to sell you the membership. We get these different machines but nobody knows how to use them, so once again we have to weed your way through that –“what’s the best in there and I have figured out that the bodies are incredible, if you can invest your time and body, you feel amazing, you just feel amazing”, we need to get private instruction at the beginning just to learn it. Growth For 2018 (34:10) Even though you know people are working all year and a lot of people skip their vacations or they are banking their vacations for later, there is still opportunities for everybody to continue to dig or continue to fact find and find resources that help them in their life. In terms of Steve’s growth for 2018, the goal is research. He essentially had to find a new formula for success in Buffalo because he saw different therapist in the Luciano area and he had a specific workout routine.  When we are working with different people, there is no way to keep it the same. So he knew he had to find a new system in Buffalo. Part of this he was able to maintain and part of this was like he had to take a step back and think- what’s going on here, what I need to work on and he want to act on basics, He is going to work with his foundation with his trainer. He is investing his time in those two things. It’s not always about what you do but how you do it. He also bought himself a pair of rollerblades.  Because when were rollerblades ever not cool? Stresses of Football (41:00) Being an NFL kicker can certainly have its stresses.  "We put in all the work, you have your program and we are going to do that no matter what, and then things can happen that are totally out of our control."  NFL kickers are specifically expected to be perfect and this combination of perfectionism and uncertainty can weigh on anyone. Tribalism (45:10) It's in our DNA to worry about what the other members of the tribe think.  We connect our identities to these ideas and then when people have a different opinion, we enter Fight or Flight mode since you're defending your own identity.  We have to realize it's great we have different opinions; it's how we form a better future and evolve our culture. Best Parts of Football (52:00) "There's an amazing ability to spread positivity when you play for a football team," Steve says.  In his first couple of years in Seattle, he saw the city improve alongside the team on their way to being Super Bowl champions.  There are infinite opportunities for good, like meeting 5 year old Madeline Herman, a pediatric cancer patient with whom he developed a friendship and was able to shine a light on. Life After Football (62:15) At the end of the day, we just need more awareness.  If people are more aware, they will pass that on to other people who will make good decisions with the best interests of humanity in mind. Meditating (75:25) Steve says that if there was one thing people were to take away from this episode, it would be to meditate.  That’s the tool.  There’s a constant flow of things into our lives for our brains to handle and you've gotta give it some time to breathe. "Meditating is the superpower that nobody uses but everbody has.  You’re never gonna 'get there'.  There’s no end-goal, there’s no winning; that’s why they call it a practice." This week, we're discussing Brené Brown's new book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone.  We each read the book before our recording, but we did not discuss our thoughts or feelings about what we read in advance.  The result was a raw, honest conversation about what scares us, what about ourselves makes us uncomfortable, those moments in our lives where we sought belonging and failed, and more.  Because in a world where there is often such a hyper-focus on "finding your tribe" -- both at work at and home -- I think we realized through our discussion that too many people aren't honest with themselves about how you actually find your own sense of true belonging.

When we are not pushed into decisions by things that are out of our control, how much risk do we actually take? How many unknown journeys do we embark on? It is always easier to stick with what we know but how does that help us grow? What would embracing uncertainty look like in your life?   Key Takeaways: [:58] Braving the Wilderness that is our world. [5:31] What would you take if you had to leave in an emergency? In episode 3 of “Post-Modern Living with Chris The Brain,” Chris and Kait talk about the perils of social media, why people are even still using it, and some positive and negative ways to use it. To cool down, Chris gives his suggestions on the best products for managing cables. People often talk about social media the way they talk about traffic - a necessary evil. But social media’s not compulsory, so why are we even still using it? What started as a tool for expression and connecting to our tribe went downhill when everyone started using it and it became a professional profile that needed to be taken seriously. Social media triggers a dopamine response, which gives us pleasure, but is connected to addiction - and too much of it leads to stress. In her book “Braving the Wilderness,” author Brené Brown says that the biggest mistake people make with social media is using it as a place to process pain. Chris and Kait discuss that when you process your pain by venting frustration on social media, someone else is often there to vent the opposite frustration, and you end up venting your anger at each other instead of having a conversation. They also mention that people can fall prey to a subconscious one-upsmanship when posting the good things about their lives. Chris and Kait are fans of Twitter, which is great for talking to people interested in the same thing as you in real time, following things that you’re interested in, and following people without others knowing about it via the list feature. They also point out that there isn’t pressure to post; you can just use it as a customized news feed. Here are their thoughts on other networks: Instagram - Great for use as a family album and keeping up with what your friends and family are doing LinkedIn - The true professional homepage, it’s more important than your resume for some recruiters Pinterest - Perfect if you make stuff and want to share with other people who make stuff Tumblr - A place to geek out on things you really like Snapchat - Making bad decisions have less consequences Reddit - Where people who say actually a lot go to prove people wrong about things Tinder - Making bad decisions have more consequences Facebook - It’s too much work to make Facebook work for you. On a lighter note, Chris gives a run-down on the best products for managing cables. Apple has (illogically) removed most of the ports in their newest products, which requires dozens of dongles and adapters. Chris’s Suggestions: GRID-IT! - takes a variety of objects and consolidates them into one nice organized system Waterfield Design and NutSac Bags - make lots of high-quality tiny gear bags Henge Docks - great docks for your MacBook, everything plugs into them Satechi - unified docking solutions for Macs, their Aluminum Type C Pro Hub Adapter is much better than the Apple dongles Shout Outs To: Apprenace, a company creating meaningful internship programs that help businesses and careers grow. In this solo episode, I explore how human beings engage with one another, how we take a stand or speak up, and how we express ourselves when faced with hot-button, emotional issues. Last week, the President publicly commented about the athletes and teams who are taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial oppression and inequality. And as a former pro-athlete, who always stood with my hand over my heart in front of the flag during the national anthem, I wonder what I will do the next time I am at a sporting event and the national anthem is played? I believe this issue goes deeper than politics, deeper than the social commentary it’s about who we are as human beings. How do we respectfully take a stand for what we believe in?   Key Takeaways: [1:07] Taking a knee and what it says about who we are as human beings. [6:24] It's hard for 'privileged' white men to talk about race and inequality. [16:51] Using dehumanizing language is at the genesis of genocide. [21:37] The false choice we are faced with. We spent three full days with 21,400+ of our closest friends in the INBOUND community, learning and getting inspired -- so needless to say, we're a little tuckered. But we're not too tired to talk about our biggest takeaways. Prior to this year, Jessie-Lee and I had both been to INBOUND more than a handful of times as part of the Quintain team -- this year, however, was distinctly different.  Not only was the tone of this year's conference a departure from previous years, we were there as new members of the IMPACT family. (Oh, and we were named HubSpot's Partner Agency of the Year, which is kind of a big deal.) We didn't go the ho-hum route, passively attending sessions to get a few tactical takeaways to start using back at home. We worked. We did live website throwdowns. We were moved by incredible speakers. We crushed some of our personal, big, audacious goals -- and now realize we need new ones. We gained perspective. Most of all, we learned we don't just want to grow for the sake of it -- we want to grow to be better. Enjoy! What We Talked About Big themes of diversity, inclusion, and positivity. Jessie-Lee went to INBOUND to learn... and came home with a mattress. Moving beyond the marketing trope of "authenticity" to a new level of self-awareness. The importance of growing better, not just bigger. How, if you want to stand out, you have to be okay with not fitting in. My INBOUND session wasn't a complete bomb. ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #176 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio " . . . bring women to the front of their own stories, and make them the hero of their own stories." —Reese Witherspoon at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ~Spoiler Alert: The ending of Hallie Meyers-Shyer's new film Home Again will be shared. The power of a Hollywood script which makes it to the silver screen as well as to the small screen better known as our television sets is unconsciously more powerful than most viewers realize, especially younger viewers unaware of the biases, exigence and purpose of the writers and creators as well as producers. Novels as well must be sold to a publishing house, and if the publishers do not believe they will be able to sell the plot to readers, the manuscript isn't accepted. In other words what determines the plots that will eventually be published, produced and brought to consumers is what will sell. But the obvious flip-side is we need to become savvier consumers of entertainment. The good news is producers will listen to noticeable shifts. For example, in 2016 movie ticket sales indicated that the largest growth in sales was taking place with Latino moviegoers, as a result (or possibly, due to) films began offering more diversity in their casting than in previous years. I share this example because when Reese Witherspoon accepted the Emmy with the ensemble for Big Little Lies last weekend (she starred and was an executive producer of all seven episodes), I had to give her credit. She lives what she desires to be brought to the forefront in Hollywood films and series: women being the heroes in their own stories. For example, she started her own production company Pacific Standard with Australian producer Bruna Papandrea (Wild & Gone Girl), branched out on her own with Hello Sunshine, a digital media company and is bringing to the screen a few titles you might recognize Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Something in the Water. And as I shared in episode #174 of the podcast in my review of Home Again, a film produced by Nancy Meyers and written and directed by her daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer, it was the ending of the movie which again revealed that Reese is indeed serious about changing the default in Hollywood that is long over-due for a change. Home Again, as she describes it in a recent interview with The New York Times, isn't a romantic comedy, but rather a modern comedy. A comedy in which, in this case, a woman becomes the hero of her own story. She doesn't end up with a man who saves her from a supposed life that is empty without one, rather her character Alice Witherspoon chooses to divorce her husband (not because he cheated and not because he was abusive) because their ways of living life, of making the most of the one journey they have the opportunity to live had strayed into two completely different directions. The love, the fondness was there, but it had changed. Her character sets boundaries, enjoys herself, supports her daughters, chases her dreams and creates a life of everyday moments that she savors on her own terms, not Hollywood's (well, in this case, yes, technically it is Hollywood, but she is now a part of Hollywood and so is Meyers-Shyer and they are changing what the definition of a happy ending). Recently a good friend of mine who is nearing forty (as I am as well) shared that all was well in her life except the missing piece - a man. And having just stepping out of a relationship, that I can honestly say I wasn't looking for but was delighted to have been in, a good life is determined by one and only one person, the person living it. I continue to urge readers and listeners to fall in love with their lives, to cultivate a life you enjoy living regardless of your relationship status because whether you are in a relationship or not, your issues, the hiccups you haven't dealt with will continue to bubble up, the stresses you haven't figured out how to handle, will continue to exacerbate and hinder you ability to savor the everyday goodness and the relationship skills you still need to polish will continue to seek your attention until you heed them whether in a relationship with a lover or a friend. I am not saying being loved and sharing love isn't an extraordinary experience. It absolutely is, but believing that our hero is someone other than ourselves to assuage our conjured up emptiness is a lie that we have accepted (man or woman), and depending up the known or unknown perpetuators of this life story line (Hollywood, novels, parents, church, school, etc.) and need to relinquish. Because I wholeheartedly not only believe, but can say to know as truth, everyday can be truly breath-taking with or without a partner. And the key is to be the hero of your own story. How? Find an outlet for your love: begin with yourself, and then with what is leftover choose from the following: a hobby, a passion project, a cause you believe in to your core, your pets, your career, your friends, your family, the world. Strengthen your innate talents and deepen your passions. Find others whom you trust to fill the gaps where you are weak (i.e. - a financial advisor, a trusted CPA, a fitness trainer, etc.) Earn your own income Be proactive. Strive daily toward your dreams. Stop waiting for opportunity plop into your lap. It's like a moving target, so get going. Save for retirement beginning yesterday Come to understand your limits and boundaries and speak up when they are crossed without apology Learn to communicate effectively Step up to the plate when needed and only 60%+ ready, not when everything is perfectly set up to do so (hint: it never will be and you will always be waiting) Build other women up Never judge another woman's life decision. Follow Amy Poehler's advice and simply quote when observing a life path taken by another woman that you wouldn't have chosen, "Good for her! Not for me." Refuse to be talked down to whether by names (girl, boy, little lady, son (when you're not their son), sweetheart, etc.) or by limitations (assuming lack of knowledge or capability). Either address the issue if the relationship is necessary to keep or simply don't respond and walk away. Change in what will be tolerated won't change until we speak up in a manner that is calm and clear. If not for yourself, than for the women around you and those that will follow you. Understand that setbacks are part of the journey, so stand back up and keep going.  Remember Billie Jean King's quote, "Pressure is a privilege." Do something with your opportunity when given the chance. Choose well and choose for you. As you come to trust your instincts, this will happen in small and big bursts throughout your journey, you will begin to know what is best for you. The better you know yourself, the quicker the decisions will be made. Be courageous. Say yes to something you've never done before but that is on the trajectory of the journey you wish to be on to help you reach your goal. No matter how trepidatious you may be. You will come out on the other side realizing there was nothing to be afraid of, just the unknown. And now it's not unknown anymore. "Once we belong thoroughly to ourselves and believe throughly in ourselves, true belonging is ours." —Brené Brown, from Braving the Wilderness I want to end with mentioning of Brené Brown's new book because her book is a reminder of what type of courage is needed to be the hero of our own story. Stepping away from the city or place of comfort that is not serving us and toward the wilderness is terrifying initially, but as we step away from seeking the approval of others and head in the direction of the wilderness, the "first step will take your breath away". And as writer, pastor, philanthropist and community leader Jen Hatmaker is quoted saying in the book, the loneliest steps are the in between, but if you "stay the course long enough to actually tunnel into the wilderness . . . you'll be shocked by how many people already live out there —thriving, dancing, creating, celebrating, belonging." Ultimately, if we can all just remember and live each day, who we are and what we can give to the world is our gift. "True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are." ~Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown~   ~SIMILAR POSTS YOU MAY ENJOY FROM THE ARCHIVES:  ~Why Not . . . Researcher & storyteller Dr. Brené Brown brings us her thoughts on shame, suffering, courage and vulnerability during this week’s conversation with Jen; drawing from her many years as a research professor, and as a woman who is seeking her most authentic life. She discusses true vulnerability and our craving for connection. She also flips the script on suffering; reframing it as a catalyst for being overcomers in our lives by asserting: “’moxie’ doesn't come from all the good stuff that happens to you. It's from working through the bad stuff.” You’ll laugh at stories about “Hairy Toes and Sexy Rice” and be inspired by the tough path she forged in bringing the topic of shame to the forefront of the academic community.  Brené's new book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and The Courage to Stand Alone, releases fall 2017.
