If you want to know the value of investing in a child and especially in teenagers, Joel Johnson is one of the greatest examples. He grew up with a Father that left him, a step father that hurt him, threatened him, and left him. Yet... God saw him! He asked Jesus into his heart and his youth pastor challenged him. He took those challenges and did what was unheard of as he kept sharing the salvation story of Jesus Christ boldly on campus. One day he spoke to several hundred students at lunch about Jesus, while having two assistant principals telling him to stop... One of them yelling at him "What gives you the right to speak about your faith?" Just wait until you hear how the students responded! Joel has spoken to hundreds of thousands since he was one of the main speakers for the Acquire The Fire student conferences that were hosted in arenas and stadiums accross the United States. He has also written many books and his latest ("The Wholehearted Journey: 7 Skills to Develop a Wholehearted Life in a Heartbreaking World") is being made into a movie! WATCH THE MOVIE TRAILER HERE: www.wholeheartedmovie.com Joel also studied at Texas A&M and Harvard. He is an author, counselor, a national communicator, and podcast host of the "Wholehearted Podcast". This was an outstanding interview that is packed full of information that you can apply to yourself, your family, and your ministry. _______________________________ YOU CAN CONNECT AND SUPPORT JOEL'S MINISTRY AT THE LINKS BELOW! So that day Moses solemnly promised me, “The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.” (Joshua 14:9 NLT) We have a lot of half-hearted people filling the pews of churches today. They want to give only the bare minimum to the One who gave everything for them. Some people think they have too much of the Lord to be happy in this world, but they have too much of this world to be happy in the Lord. They live in a miserable no-man’s-land. Yet if we want to live the Christian life as it was meant to be lived, then we need follow the Lord wholeheartedly. That’s what Caleb did. He is a hero of the faith, one of the unsung heroes of Scripture. Caleb never lost his edge spiritually. And in every sense of the phrase, he finished well. He was faithful to the very end. Where did Caleb get the strength to do it? We find the answer in Joshua 14:9, where Caleb said, “So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God’” (NLT). Caleb wholeheartedly followed the Lord his God. Forty-five years earlier, Caleb, along with Moses, Joshua, and the children of Israel, came to the edge of the Promised Land. They had made the trek from Egypt and now were poised to enter in. And their point of entry was Kadesh-barnea. Twelve men went in to spy out the land, and Caleb and Joshua were among them. The Israelites probably should have simply gone into the Promised Land, believing that God would give it to them. After all, God had promised He would watch out for them, bless them, and get them through. Instead, they sent out the spies. After some time in the land, the twelve spies returned. Ten of the men essentially said, “You don’t want to go into that place. Everything in this land is big. The walls are big. The towns are big. There are giants in the land.” Meanwhile, Joshua and Caleb said, “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! .. . . Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!” (Numbers 14:7, 9 NLT). But the people were angry with Joshua and Caleb for daring to suggest they continue into the land. They actually wanted to kill the two men on the spot. As a result, God wasn’t happy with Israel. He basically said, “That’s it. None of you will enter into the land except Joshua and Caleb.” Then they had to wander in the wilderness for forty long years. If we want to finish well, like Caleb, then we must follow God wholeheartedly. That means we won’t compromise but instead stand our ground. It means we’re more concerned with the approval of God than that of anyone else. The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang
Delight is NOT decadent. It is sustenance. When we honor diastole, we honor ourselves. Honoring diastole is healing for our own hearts. A necessary, but often neglected, action for healers. Today's episode includes a special guest, Dr. Gail Wright, a pediatric cardiologist, a disciple of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, mindfulness teacher, and founder of Redwood Resilience. She also happens to be Jessie's friend, soul sister in many endeavors, and her co-lead for the Honoring Diastole Retreats at Pie Ranch. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of diastole in our lives, finding delight in the practice of medicine, and the why of the experience we provide at Pie Ranch. Diastole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and allows the chambers to fill with blood. The idea of a heart needing to relax in order to continue to function properly extends to each of us as individuals. Our hearts know that diastole should be 2/3 of the cardiac cycle for a long and healthy life. Most of us don't live a life that honors rest, refilling, and relaxing in this way. A key eye-opening point made from the cardiologist's perspective is that diastole in the heart is actually only a matter of milliseconds. Even small practices, seconds or 1 day, can make a huge difference in how we show up at work and at home. Listen to our conversation to learn why mindful movement helps you find the place between effort and ease and reconnect to the natural rhythms within yourself. We share how reflective writing allows you to get back into the flow, be seen and known, and see and know. We also discuss how mindful coaching helps you “wonder rather than worry." Nature is a shared love of Gail's and mine and a huge component of why and how we collaborate. Nature is an essential ingredient in all of my retreat offerings because it, along with mindfulness, coaching, and yoga, helps you live into a bigger version of yourself. Gail reminds us that nature is a reminder of the rhythms of life, that helps us “learn to stand tall, with dignity and grace, and drink from the clouds.” Retreats are a way to honor diastole. They are an intentional gift for a healthy heart, mind, and spirit. When we retreat, we take a respite and create space for reflection. We would love to have you join us at Pie Ranch in the fall or spring, www.jessiemahoneymd.com/honoring-diastole or Jessie at Sagrada in either September 2022 or the spring of 2023 www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreat-nourish-and-transf... If you are inspired by the idea of wondering rather than worrying, set up a call with Jessie to explore mindful coaching options. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/work-with-me, www.jessiemahoneymd.com/coaching Dr. Gail Wright can be found at www.RedwoodResilience.com. StoryShots Summary and Review of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brené BrownAbout Brené Brown Brené Brown is an award-winning and renowned researcher. She received her Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Brown is a professor at the University of Houston and holds the Huffington Foundation-Brené Brown Endowed Chair. She has studied vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy for the past two decades. Her former work includes other books related to the topic, such as I Thought It Was Just Me (2007) and The Gift of Imperfection (2010). Brown's TED Talks have been viewed over 40 million times, and Time magazine has named her one of the world's most influential thinkers. IntroductionDaring Greatly is a book by the researcher and thought leaderhttps://brenebrown.com/about/ ( Brené Brown). It offers a powerful new vision to provide readers with a powerful new concept. It encourages you to embrace vulnerability and imperfection greatly and live wholeheartedly. Vulnerability and shame are at the heart of Brown's research. We have to embrace vulnerability. In doing so, we should be happier. What's more, you should be able to forge great relationships with yourself and others. Unfortunately, many people believe vulnerability is a sign of weakness and failure. They see shame as a direct consequence of vulnerability. Moving past this myth makes it easier for us to try new things. This could lead to new possibilities. Here are the ten key takeaways from Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. StoryShot #1: Seek a Wholehearted Life, Filled with Courage, Engagement, and Purpose. Wholeheartedness is ahttps://www.themarginalian.org/2010/11/08/brene-brown-tedx-houston/ ( feeling of worth,) even when you are essentially flawed. It means you focus your energy and attention on good qualities. Focus on what's going right, instead of shortcomings. In reality, many people end up with some notion regarding loving themselves. There's a lot in pop culture, including songs, all meant to encourage people to be easier on themselves. Still, we are more predisposed to taking a hard stance on ourselves. Daring Greatly shows that at the tenet of wholeheartedness are five ideals: All people need love and a sense of belonging. The feeling of not being worthy is central to the love we show ourselves. We build a sense of worthiness over time. How we perceive and react to our experiences informs it. We all want to live a life of courage, compassion, and connection at the core of our beings. And finally, as a wholehearted individual, use vulnerability as a catalyst. It should help you achieve courage, compassion, and connection. StoryShot #2: Vulnerability is Central to Meaningful Existence. When you don't allow yourself to be vulnerable, you shut yourself off from life's best. It would be best to look at vulnerability as engaging, playing a game, and choosing to rise to the challenge. You must be open to engaging even when you know there's the likelihood that you won't prevail. The willingness to engage is a measure of courage and clarity of purpose. Look at it this way. You showcase the fear and disconnection you feel by not embracing...

Brene Brown is a researcher. storyteller and a Texan. She believes that every time we choose courage, we make everyone around us a little better and the world a little braver. In this episode of the podcast we discuss her first New York Times bestseller, "The Gifts of Imperfection: Letting Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are". On her website, she actually has this article: Which Brene Brown book to Read First and it really lead us straight to this book. And it really resonated, because a "WholeHearted Life" is really very similar to a HAPPIER, longer life in our opinions. Quite honestly, Brene's website is amazing. This main article page, Articles, has so many other great things. There are quote cards, book excerpts and definitions. We loved learning all about and from Brene Brown this month. This book, her writing and storytelling, backed by the science was right up our alley. We hope you enjoy our talk on "The Gifts of Imperfection"
Over the next little while, we're going to be considering what it looks like to live a wholehearted life. Jesus, as always, is our centre. Jesus who clearly lived the most whole-hearted life that has been lived. Jesus who sometimes wrestled but never hesitated. Jesus who weighed the cost but never withheld. Jesus who stared down the scariest pathways but never flinched. Jesus who could have claimed the whole world as his own, yet gave everything for the sake of that world. What would our lives look like if we lived into the promises and invitations of the Kingdom without reservation?

Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think 'no matter what gets done and how much left undone; I am enough." It's going to bed at night thinking "Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn't change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging." In this special bonus episode, we talk about Rose's main takeaways from the book "Daring Greatly" by Brene' Brown: wholehearted living, cultivating gratitude, and combating perfectionism. Matt adds a therapist's perspective and they discuss simple tips on how to put these concepts into positive action through easy strategies and EFT tapping. Rose also reads listeners' questions and Dr. Watts' (our favorite Naturopathic doc) advice about lowering A1c levels, easing anxiety & depression, and what blood tests to ask for at our next appointment with our primary care provider. This is a jam-packed episode full of real, effective tips and tricks for having a better mind, body, and spirit! Each month we plan to bring you a new episode just like this. We hope you like it.
