Why would you pay full price for something that you could get for 30%, 50%, 70% or even 90% off!?? Many Big Box Retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, Kohls and Old Navy offer MAJOR discounts on items all-year round, if you know where to look and when to go.    This week, Join Syd for S2 Ep10 Making a Dollar Out of 15 Cents part II: How to Save Money by Bargain Hunting, as she sits down with Victoria Garcia, aka The Target Bargain Hunter, who breaks down her system for tracking sales, clearances and bargains.   Victoria Garcia is a professional shopper known as The Target Bargain Hunter. She helps regular people shop for cheap or even free at the best stores, but Target is her store of focus!   Want to connect with Victoria? A clearance item is a product that has been permanently or indefinitely reduced in price so that a store can either salvage or get rid of it. A sale item is a product that is reduced in price for a special reason for a limited amount of time.   Can anything go on sale or clearance? Yes, generally a store would put anything on clearance that it wants to get rid of at any particular time. That means that anything from a certain variety of apple to a certain kind of rug might go on clearance.    When do things normally go on clearance? Seasonal items like fresh foods or clothes will generally go on clearance towards the end of a season (i.e. summer, winter, fall, spring) when a store is trying to phase out or get rid of a specific kind of item like bathing suits, short, sunglasses…etc. Seasonal Items tend to go on clearance anywhere between one month to one week after a season ends.    How much of a discount can I get if something is on clearance? Target will generally discount items at either 30%, 50% or 70% off. However, in very rare instances, with holiday items, they may mark something down to 90% off.   How long does it take for an item to get to 70% off? Generally seasonal items start at 30% off around one week after the end of the season. If an item is still in stock by around the 6th week after the end of a season, it will go to 70% off. For example, summer clothes tend to hit the 70% off mark at the beginning of October.    How do you find clearance items? Target generally has a clearance section, but there are tons of items in the store that are on clearance that are not in the clearance section. In order to find the deals, you have to track items in the store. If you don't have time to track the deals yourself, follow bargain hunters on Instagram, YouTube or Tik Tok to be notified when they find a deal.   ADVERTISEMENTS: Shop with The Sugar Free Podcast advertisers: Building Bread—Want to start investing in the stock market? Text: 1 Corinthians 10:1-15 Opening Statement: No greater compliment can be paid a Christian than to refer to him or her as a godly person. What does it mean to be godly? What does it look like to be godly? Do we have to live in a monastery to be godly? I) What does godliness mean? (1 Cor. 10:5-7) Godliness is taking God seriously. The heartbeat of the godly person is the desire to respect and reverence the things of God. This does not mean they are always serious minded without a lighter side. They enjoy life because they enjoy the Creator of life. Our churches should be overflowing with godly men and women. But are they? All too often, we walk down the same paths of carnality as these ancient Hebrews. We make light of what we should honor. We wink at what we should weep about. We play with what we should take quite seriously. Do you take God seriously? If you do, you are well on your way to godliness. II) How does one know if they are godly? How do you know if you are taking God seriously? How do you know if you are radiating the glow of godliness? People who take God seriously exhibit certain traits: A) Thirst for God If we want to be godly, we must long for God. David was such a man. (Psalm 42:1-2). Intensity for God is the heartbeat of a godly person. Godliness doesn't come by sitting passively by doing nothing or by waiting for it to drop in your lap. It requires hard work, enduring perseverance, and a continued effort. The godly person is content in their relationship with God, but never satisfied with the present position. They always yearn for more. Are you pursuing God? B) Focus on God The pursuer of godliness focuses attention on God in all things. The trouble and tragedy of modern man is that we tend to divert our focus away from God. It is quite possible to become an idolater. An idol is anything that draws our attention and adoration away from God. (1 Tim. 4:7-8 & 1 Tim. 6:6, 10-11). Paul correctly addresses the problem of most 21st century Americans. The age of physical fitness and monetary gain are upon us. True, nothing is sinful in these pursuits. Until they come between God and us. What are you doing to focus on God? Have you allowed the cares and worries of the world to blur your vision of God? What activities are you performing to keep yourself spiritually fit? C) Worship God Worship enables us to properly acknowledge God. We see him as he is Majestic and Sovereign, and we see ourselves, as we are finite and helpless. The godly person removes himself from the center of his world and puts God in his proper place. John Murray says, "What or whom we worship determines our behavior." If a person worships basketball their conduct and behavior is consumed with the sport. If a person worships money, they are driven to accumulate as much as possible. If a person worships God, they seek to know him and live obediently to his principles. Who or what are you worshipping? D) Serve other people The godly individual not only gives God his due; he also serves his fellow man and gives him his due. As we invest time with God, he will guide us to serve others. Godly people know that service is an outgrowth of worship. The best evidence of godliness is not the monk who lives in the monastery secluded from people. It is the person who lives a godly life in the midst of crying children, busy schedules, foul-mouthed workers, and rain-soaked days by serving other people. Who are you serving? In Closing: Do you mean business with God, or will you be content to just play church? Is your religion of the heart or is it superficial, skin deep? Do you speak the Christian lingo, but fail to live the life of godliness? Sermon Summary: I: How good it is when the king and priest honour each-other, how painful when one neglects the others role and wisdom. II: How good it is when the king acts on Gods prophetic word, how painful when the prophets wisdom is ignored. III: God strikes down the reign of those kings that ignore his law (priests) and His word (prophets). IV: In Christ, the roles of prophet, priest and king are brought together, for the perfect blessing of His people. Discussion Questions: What made the early reign of Joash so successful? What can we take from Joashs priority on reconstructing the temple? How did the people respond to the early reign of Joash? What changed for Joash when Jehoiada died? How did the people respond to the later reign of Joash? What were the signs of Amaziahs half-hearted wisdom and faithfulness? How does Amaziahs response to Gods word from the prophets show the state of his reign? How does God respond to the reign of these kings who were not wholly faithful or wise? What is some of the ministry of Christs prophetic office? What is some of the ministry of Christs priestly office? What is some of the ministry of Christs kingly office? What are some of the connections you can see between these three offices of Jesus? Why does Jesus role as prophet, priest and king give us assurance that His reign will never end?

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church

Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Charles DrewSermon Series: Wisdom from God on How to Engage Politically2 Timothy 1:1-7; Romans 8:28-32, 38-39 (ESV)1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,2 To Timothy, my beloved child:Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.Sermon OutlineOpening: Political fear is not a proper Christian motivation: God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Tim 1:7)I) A sampling of political fears II) How do we bring such fears under control? A) Paul's experience Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. (2 Corinthians 11:24-27) B) The reasons for Paul's fearlessness in Romans 8. God's got everything covered.V. 28: And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. The ‘good' God promises involves the restoration of every loss. v. 32: He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? The ‘good' goes beyond restoring what we have lost and is far more satisfying.V. 29: For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Good people (conformed to the image of his Son): Marvelous, vast, and satisfying community (firstborn of many brothers). The ‘good' is guaranteed by his lovevv. 31-32: What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?“Who delivered up Jesus to die? Not Judas, for money; not Pilate, for fear; not the Jews, for envy;--but the Father, for love.” (Octavius Winslow)Summary: vv. 38-39 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Conclusion: Thinking of what Romans 8 can do to our fear-based behavior.Prayer of ConfessionOur great Redeemer, your love covers all contingencies and is guaranteed by the gift of your Son. Not even the worst-case scenarios can separate us from the good that you intend for us in him. And yet we continue to be afraid, and our fears often hurt others. They make us angry and impatient. They make us mistrustful and cruel. They make us cold, unwilling to listen, and prone to accuse. Our friends need to see gospel driven love and hope in us, and often they do not. Forgive us. Fill us with the Spirit as you filled Paul and Timothy. Cause your cross to increase our joy and confidence. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.Questions for ReflectionImagine the worst-case scenario for America's political future over the next ten years. What is it about this scenario that makes you fearful? Why does it make you afraid? What, specifically, do you fear losing or not having?Reflect on Paul's words to Timothy: 2 Tim 1.7: God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control (2 Tim. 1:7). According to Paul, what three things does the Spirit give to us as antidotes to fear? What makes them good antidotes?2 Corinthians 11:24-27 describe Paul's experience after since he decided to follow Jesus. Imagine enduring such a life. What sort of emotional toll would it take on you? Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Read Romans 8:28-32, 38-39. Describe and reflect on Paul's tone as he writes, especially in the light of the life experience he has had. How can you explain Paul's tone?Reflect on Romans 8:28-32, 38-39 phrase by phrase. What reasons does each phrase give us for why, despite all his suffering and hardship, Paul was so filled with joy and confidence? How might believing what Paul believed impact the way in which you conduct your public and political life?Spend some time praying through Romans 8:28-32, 38-39. Pray with the world-wide church, New York City, America (or your home country if you are not American), and the broader world in view.

I I was once naive, ignorant in bliss; I never knew it until God awakened me. How I ignored His word and His love; now I can see how much I've missed. I often regret the time I laid to waste, dreaming away, day after day. I paid no mind to what God had said, with a deaf ear I had turned. Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. Oh how it fills my heart! Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. I always yearn for Your love. II How the past haunts me still, recalling at times hurts me so. But I'm finally learning to let it go; Your love for me is unforgettable. Your words of judgment and sincere love, I shall always hold dear to my heart. Seek not my own future, it will be for naught. Let go of my past, leave my whole heart to God. Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. Oh how it fills my heart! Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. I always yearn for Your love. III I stand decided, I won't back down, no more worrying, no more wandering. I will pursue God's truth, devoted to fulfilling His will. I stand decided, I won't back down, no more worrying, no more wandering. I will pursue God's truth, devoted to fulfilling His will, until my dying breath. Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. Oh how it fills my heart! Oh God! It's Your word, it's Your love that has awakened me from my sleep. I always yearn for Your love. Download Episode! Hey, lovely radicals... podcast time! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I’m talking to Marya Hornbacher from Minneapolis, USA. Marya is known for many things. She is an assistant professor of Writing Arts at Rowan University, she is an award-winning journalist and – as most of you might know – she is also a bestselling author, most known for her memoir on anorexia called "Wasted" (which was published when she was 22 years old). Ten years after that, she published a memoir on Bipolar Disorder called "Madness", after which she came out with an acclaimed novel called "The Center of Winter", followed by two books about mental health, addiction, recovery and spirituality; one called "Sane", the other one "Waiting". Marya has a lot more in the works, but we’ll talk about that – among myriad of other things – in our beautiful conversation. You'll hear Marya talk about: – When and why she became self-conscious about her body as a child – How her parents related to weight – What she was hungry for as a child (apart from food) – Why we grow up with the idea that our various emotional hungers are unwelcome – Why people with a sensitive nature are often prone to eating issues – What her own journey of finding out about (and coming to terms with) her mental illness was like – How she fell into the trap of identifying herself by her problems, issues, and chaos – How she found out that recovery meant to go beyond that "black hole of trouble"-identity – How, for many people (not all!), an eating disorder represents a symptom of a larger issue, rather than the problem itself – Why misdiagnosis are so rampant when it comes to mental illness – How she started to re-establish trust in herself and advocate for herself when faced with medical professionals – Why educating ourselves is vital in the process of healing from our own personal issues – Why the right sort of medication can make all the difference – What the key pieces were for her to finally start her healing journey for good – Why recovery (from anything) is so hard at times, bringing forth what a person has been running from – Why the investment we put into healing is the best we will ever do for ourselves – How she understands her own past eating disorder in retrospect – Why she ended up becoming an alcoholic after her eating disorder was "under control" (aka: addiction transfer) – Why she doesn’t believe in the theory of certain people "just having an addictive personality" – Why what we’re all looking for is already inside us, and why our need to "feel in control" often leads us into the trap of "being controlled" (be that by food / rules / compulsions, or substances) – Why it is crucial for the healing process to develop our own opinion and to advocate for our own truth instead of just following random popular people’s advice – Why we all need to be careful with our social media consumption – Why self-acceptance really is the key to become comfortable with who we are – What she finds helpful on the path to finding out "who we really are", and what brings us the greatest joy in life – What she wants us to know about Bipolar Disorder (I and II) – How she deals with her illness and manages it these days – How we can accept and live with our own personal limitations without beating ourselves up over them – Why it is our personal responsibility to step out of the game our society seems to want us to play – How important it is to find our own tribe outside of the masses – Why the key to finding "our sort of people" is to step out of comparison-mode ourselves – Why making friends with solitude can be a key step on the healing journey – What "resilience" means to her – How not to fall for "Do THIS... and you’ll be happy!"-lies anymore... ...
