Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Unfortunately, you can't work harder to get better sleep – you have to learn to relax, Zeitzer tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. Please introduce yourself, let us know where you're listening from, and share your question. Carrie Bearden, Ph.D., delves into how sleep patterns and brain activity influence memory and cognitive abilities in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism. Her research reveals that while these individuals tend to sleep longer, their brain activity shows unique differences, such as reduced slow-wave power, which may limit the cognitive benefits typically associated with sleep. Bearden also spotlights groundbreaking studies using advanced tools like stem cells and brain organoids to investigate how specific genes might drive these differences, offering hope for deeper insights and potential interventions. Maybe you're waking up to darker, colder mornings, or reaching for those comforting carbs a little more often. You're not imagining it—seasonal changes really do affect how we feel, both physically and mentally. Actually, there is a reason why this happens… and that's exactly what I'm talking about in this week's episode of Rooted in Wellness. I'll break down why colder, overcast days might make you crave more warmth (and caffeine!) and how this can impact your mental clarity and motivation. Together, we'll explore how aligning with the seasons can actually help you feel your best, even when the weather's working against you. From nourishing foods that support your body's natural rhythms, to ancient healing practices that help you stay rooted, this episode will guide you through the changes ahead. So, if you've been feeling a little out of sync or just need a little guidance on how to thrive through the colder months, this episode is for you. In this episode of Ask Dr. Tony, Dr. Tony Ebel explains neurological soft signs - the subtle yet critical indicators that show a child's nervous system is beginning to heal, even before major symptoms improve. He outlines six key signs parents should monitor, from improved posture and muscle tone to better sensory processing, while explaining why these foundational changes must precede improvements in conditions like autism, ADHD, and seizures. Throughout the discussion, Dr. Tony challenges conventional medical approaches that focus on immediate symptom relief, instead presenting a framework for understanding true neurological healing that emphasizes the importance of sequential improvement and proper nervous system foundation before expecting changes in brain-based symptoms.[00:02:00] - Understanding the Context of HealingDifference between medical and neurological healing approachesWhy conventional symptom-based measurements can be misleading[00:05:00] - The Importance of Proper SequencingWhy foundational changes must happen before brain-based improvementsIntroduction to neurological soft signs concept[00:09:00] - Redefining HealingWhy immediate symptom relief isn't always the best indicator of healing[00:13:00] - The Heart-Brain ConnectionBalancing emotional desires with clinical realityUnderstanding parent expectations versus the healing process[00:21:00] - Introduction to Neurological Soft SignsDefinition and importanceWhy they precede major symptom changes[00:25:00] - The Six Key Neurological Soft Signs:[00:28:00] Better Posture, Muscle Tone, and GaitImportance of motor functionUnderstanding hypertonicity and hypotonicity[00:30:00] Improved Sleep PatternsSleep as an indicator of nervous system functionImportance for neurological healing[00:32:00] Digestive FunctionThe connection between the nervous system and digestionSigns of improving gut function[00:36:00] Respiratory and Immune FunctionRelationship between the immune system and nervous systemImportance of proper breathing patterns[00:41:00] Sensory Processing and Behavioral RegulationReduced sensory overloadImproved emotional regulation[00:48:00] - Clinical Assessment ProcessHow practitioners evaluate neurological soft signsRole of insight scans[00:52:00] - The Levels of Progress TrackingPre/post adjustment changesDay-to-day trackingInsight scansNeurological soft signsMajor symptom changesEpisode referenced that covers detoxing/retracing-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocs Facebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs Network Youtube: The PX Docs For more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care.
