In this What's Next with Aki Anastasiou interview, the director of broadcast cybersecurity and anti-piracy at Irdeto, Frikkie Jonker, discusses the importance of fighting piracy. Jonker is a highly respected name in the South African anti-piracy industry, boasting over 30 years of experience in the field. In his current role, Jonker heads up the Irdeto team fighting against piracy in Africa. Irdeto is owned by the MultiChoice Group and is dedicated to working with organisations like Partners Against Piracy (PAP) to fight cybercrime in video entertainment. In this What's Next interview, Jonker discusses how piracy has evolved in the digital age and explains why the fight against piracy remains incredibly important. He explains why he is committed to fighting piracy and protecting the creative industry through his current role, highlighting piracy's financial impact on individuals and businesses. Jonker then discusses how the partnership between MultiChoice and PAP has been valuable for both parties, and reveals how MultiChoice has offered its expertise and resources to help PAP protect the creative industry. He expands upon the various strategies and technologies that Irdeto and PAP use to combat the rising threat of piracy in the digital landscape and notes the role social media plays as a platform for sharing pirated content. Jonker concludes the interview by explaining how ISPs, governments, and regulatory bodies play important roles in fighting piracy.

MultiChoice Group has been involved in two major enforcement actions against piracy kingpins in as many weeks. Frikkie Jonker, of MultiChoice subsidiary Irdeto, is the man leading the charge against these pirate operations, and he tells the TechCentral Show (TCS) that, despite recent arrests, the broadcaster's war on streaming piracy is just getting started. More arrests and other enforcement actions are on the cards. On 5 June, MultiChoice revealed it had succeeding in nailing the streaming piracy platform Waka TV in an operation that involved Western Cape police investigators. It described the dismantling of Waka TV as “a significant victory in the fight against internet streaming piracy”. The broadcaster said it was involved in a “meticulously planned raid” on 31 May, which led to the arrest of a “key suspect involved in one of the most extensive pirate operations in Africa”. A day later, on 6 June, the broadcaster announced that through Irdeto – and working with law enforcement agencies – it had acted against another pirate streaming operation, this one in Gauteng, where a suspect was arrested for the “illegal sale of internet streaming pirate devices that allowed individuals to access MultiChoice content”. Jonker, who is antipiracy director in broadcasting and cybersecurity at Irdeto, takes TechCentral's audience into some detail about the two law enforcement operations and what transpired. And he explains why MultiChoice is stepping up its battle against content thieves and pirate streaming operations in South Africa and the rest of the African continent. In the interview, Jonker unpacks: • How serious content piracy has become on the continent; • Why it's often associated with organised criminal syndicates, and why consumers are putting themselves at risk by signing up to pirate streaming platforms as well as encouraging further criminal activity; • Why MultiChoice is now warning that, in addition to targeting the pirate platform operators, it may go after consumers who sign up to these platforms, too; and • How the broadcaster is working with law enforcement authorities. Don't miss a fascinating conversation. TechCentral

One of his crowning moments has to be his involvement of the shift of CAS being underpinned by hardware (the smartcard) to it becoming fully driven by software as it is today. Having managed teams on a global basis for many years, his insight on running remote teams is insightful. He makes the really valid point that right now, focusing on those who you used to see regularly in the office - as opposed to those who've been used to remote working and management - is so key as they are the ones who're feeling the difference the most. Having left Irdeto to join him at International Datacasting, and then re-joining him at Irdeto a few years later, it's no surprise to hear that Doug Lowther - current CEO of Irdeto - has been a significant influence on his career. But it's not all work work work, as we draw out his other passion of motorsport...you can hear the enthusiasm ooze as he describes how he'd recently travelled at 280kmph on a motorbike at Hockenhiem! The global economy is no longer a turn of phrase but rather an everyday reality for entrepreneurs and big business alike. But how can you walk the tight rope of cross cultural leadership?Well stay tuned because we are about to find out.Our guest today is a man I like to think of as the James Bond of business. He’s suave, debonair, with enough grit to keep him sharp as a razor He's a man with his finger on the global pulse, all shaken but never stirred, with a fabulously dry British sense of humour. Graham Kill returned to the UK in 2014 after 24 years abroad to live and develop a portfolio in the UK – his ‘third’ career. He is: Chairman of PMYB and SmartFlow, two fast growing companies scaling up; co-founder of intelligent mobility start-up, Conga; investor in and advisor with ScaleUp; Seckford Foundation Charity Trustee; Chair of Suffolk Branch of the Institute of Directors; and a Prince’s Trust Business Mentor. His ‘first’ career (1983-1991) was a Mining Engineer managing underground operations in coal and gypsum mines in the UK.After his MBA (1993), Graham joined the Naspers Group’s FilmNet company, a European B2C pay TV group, in corporate finance and business development – the start of his ‘second career’. He joined Irdeto, a B2B media technology company also part of Naspers, in 1995 as its CFO and Operations Director. He was Irdeto’s CEO from 1998 until his resignation. (March 2015).Whilst CEO, Irdeto grew from an engineering-led, in-house technology team (50 people) with US$25M annual revenue to a US$240M global, market-orientated company. The 1,000 strong team based in 25 countries served customers worldwide. The Irdeto team achieved this growth through: customer acquisition globally; new product/service introductions; diversification of the portfolio; and acquisitions.Find out more about Graham Kill on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/grahamkillTo find out more about hiring the host Dov Baron as a speaker or strategist: http://fullmontyleadership.com/consulting or http://fullmontyleadership.com/speakingRemember you can now also find us on iTunes, Spotify, iHeart Radio, or wherever you tune into podcastsAnd on traditional radio stations across the US every Monday and Thursday on: 99.5 FM & 1520 AM Las Vegas102.1 FM & 1640 AM Lancaster, Philadelphia87.9 FM & 810 AM Macon, Gorgia 92.1 FM & 1630 AM Tampa, Florida97.7 The Villages, Florida96.3 FM Boulder ,Colorado90.3 FM Milwaukee, Wisconsin 94.7 FM Pittsburg, Philadelphia87.9 FM Colorado Springs, ColoradoAlso look for us on ROKU TV where there’s 100K subscribers. As the head of IOT security and strategic business development at Irdeto, Mark Hearn brings 50 years of experience to provide customers the highest level of security. Any place where software is being written, there is a security need. Irdeto has three main priorities: help businesses identify and develop security strategies, monitor hacking activity on the dark web in order to stay current with what's happening behind the scenes, and invest in technology that makes hacking less beneficial to hackers. “IOT is growing exponentially, but we're also making it a little easier for hackers to get in…so very strong security strategy and making sure that companies understand the threats and the risks that they may encounter with their products is critical in today's environment,” says Hearn. Hearn brings a wealth of information to the discussion, and also provides some insight into how the major 2013 hack on Target was carried out.
