In this episode, Men At Large member Dave Tolliver (of the '90s RB trio, who had a top 5 hit with ‘So Alone' in 1993) talks about how they were first discovered by the soul singer Gerald Levert, his radio experience and his new radio show. He also mentions that he and Marc Gordon of Levert, and Joe Little III of the Rude Boys, perform classics made popular by Levert.

Daniel Rachel's new book Too Much Too Young, the 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys, Racism, and the Soundtrack of a Generation (Akashic, 2024) presents the definitive history of 2 Tone Records. In 1979, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the English Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against rightwing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with a punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry, England, and masterminded by a middle-class art student, Jerry Dammers, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years, Dammers built the label back up again, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” Told in three parts, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief, bright burning moment shaped British, American, and world culture. This South Bend, Arkansas native was introduced to music at a very early age. Music first found him in the church choir. Watching his mother sing in the choir, persuaded him to develop his singing ability. That ability was noticed by his mother, and he was told to pursue his musical ambitions. It nurtured and enhanced Tabu's musical skills. This led Tabu to enter into the Lamarck Productions, in which he achieved first place and the ability to meet The Rude Boyz and Ed Davis. Tabu has traveled across The Midwest in recent years and has been led to Atlanta, GA. This has allowed him to meet Dawayne Wilson of Dirty House Productions. He has also released his first solo album, entitled Introduction Into Tabu. Currently Tabu works with Mose Stovall and Kelvin Benion of KSwayMusic Production and Jay of Platinum 1 Entertainment. Tabu has been the opening act for The Rude Boys, Men at Large, Joe, Lenny Williams, Gerald Levert, Monica, Tony Terry, David Peaston, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Intro, Melisa Morgan, Focus the group, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Sir Charles Jones, and countless others to be named. Tabu's music influences come from artists such as... Teddy Pendergrass, Gerald Levert, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Taylor, and Mary Mitchell  (his mother). He feels that God's purpose must always be our guide. Singing is his gift, through music, Tabu wants to reach, to touch, and to make changes in peoples' lives. His goal in his music career is "that it will touch the lives of people and reach all genres. I wish to have it translate to others and to touch the masses. I feel at the end of the day, it is what it is, always give 110% at whatever you do.  I thank God for the ability to translate and be transparent via records, CDs, streams, television, radio, and much more."

GBH - The Garry Bushell Hour

Shortly after the NME announced that punk was dead, The Ruts came along and proved that it wasn’t. Their driving, reggae-infused punk embodied the whole late 70s Rock Against Racism ideal. And their amazing anthems, such as Babylon’s Burning, Staring At the Rude Boys and Something That I Said carried them into the charts and into the hearts of a generation…before tragedy struck. The Ruts story is told at length in Love In Vain - a massive tome written by Roland Link with a foreword by Henry Rollins of Black Flag and Sons Of Anarchy fame. I’ve dubbed the band “inspired, brilliant, tragic and thrilling in equal measure” so I’m genuinely delighted to welcome the surviving Ruts – Segsy and Dave Ruffy on to the show tonight! Towering, boyishly handsome, and boasting a baritone dipped in the gravel and gravy of Southern soul, Marquis is one of the streets and the steeple. A committed man of dedicated faith and community service, Marquis is the anti-thesis of today’s R&B bad boys. Like his inspirations, Marquis started his stage life in front of the pews. Deriving from a rich family legacy of performers that includes blood ties to Phyllis Hyman, Debbie Allen, and Phylicia Rashad, Marquis traveled as a child performer in the “Family & Friends” gospel troupe. He rocked the church with preternaturally grown vocals until high school. A star-turning performance at a college show returned Marquis to music and later membership with the R&B quartet, Mass Appeal. Soon joining up with Babyface’s production team, Marquis further refined his music and engineering skills, working with future Finding My Way producer, Jeremy “Cochise” Ball, Thank You producer, Angelo Ray, as well as the legendary Gerald Levert and the Rude Boys. In 2009, Marquis independently released the FMW2.5 mixtape. While Marquis debut and mixtape told of his broken engagement, 2011’s Authentic was more introspective. Moody blues and torch ballad rich, Authentic was a raw, transparent portrait of a man struggling with hard decisions at life’s crossroads. Singing about broken families, lost love, and the roughness of the industry climb prompted Marquis to take a hiatus to make peace with family, study, and re-discover his spirituality and church. Largely written and recorded in five days with sole producer Angelo Ray, the more up-tempo Thank You is a love letter to everyone who stuck by and loved Marquis through his turmoil and evolution into manhood.

The guys behind Washington, DC's monthly Gaylarious Comedy showcase will have you in stitches as they help us skewer all the pop culture and gay news of the week over cocktails. Lots of cocktails. Nothing is off limits nor sacred with these guys. Just the way we like it! Topics include last Sunday's Oscar-snorefest-of-a telecast; the just announced cast of Dancing with the Stars; Zac Efron and the condom drop incident; the gay Marine homecoming photo seen 'round the world; same-sex marriage comes to Maryland; straight boys playing it gay for ratings; Rude Boys are fun; and, anything you might do on Leap Day, doesn't count! The hosts also play a round of the Swish's signature "Super Gay Bad Libs," (to the dismay of Chris & Zach). Hey, we think it's a fun activity...but we'll do our best to come up with a fresh, new game for next time. Promise. All that, plus we announce our newest Twitter winner.
