Sergeant Prothero, a 13-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department, had been working as an off-duty security guard at the J. Brown Jewelers store in the 1800 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville when he was slain in the parking lot of the store. What technology did this former athletic director use, and what's going to happen to him? Net neutrality has been restored as the FCC votes to reclassify broadband service in order to protect consumers and ensure a fast, open, fair and reliable Internet. How will this decision impact Internet regulations and access across the United States and the world? Security researchers were able to take control of a variant of the PlugX By sinkholing one of its command and control servers that saw over 2. 5 million unique IP addresses in just the last 6 months. What strategies are these security researchers proposing in order to get rid of this malware from end devices? You're listening to The Daily Decrypt. Researchers at Sequoia have successfully sinkholed a command and control server for a variant of the PlugX malware, intercepting over 2. 5 million connections from unique IP addresses in the last six months. These security researchers at Sequoia were able to access the actual command and control server through a web shell, which allowed them to not only shut it down, but to continue receiving the requests from the infected hosts, and they've shown over 90, 000 daily requests across 170 countries. Now, some of those requests were through VPNs, and so the country might not be accurate. But it's very interesting for them to be able to observe the malware's behavior as if it was still under control of this server. Sequoia acquired control of this IP by working closely with the internet service provider who provides this IP and They just paid seven bucks to transfer ownership to them And again, VPNs make it hard, but they're assuming this has something to do with China, as the top infected countries are related to China's Belt and Road Initiative. But this malware has had over four years to spread to wherever it can, so this conclusion should be taken with a grain of salt. But now that researchers have control over the Command and Control server They're faced with this legal dilemma of how are they going to rid the end devices from this malware. First of all, it's illegal to interact with devices that you don't own. So, crafting some sort of packet to send back to this malware to self delete would be crossing some legal boundaries. Also, this PlugX malware is trained to replicate and spread on its own automatically, so even if they were able to rid the device of this malware, it's likely going to spread or be spread to again. But as of now, the researchers are working on Some procedures for end users to rid their devices of this malware and maybe harden their security. I'm not sure how they're going to disseminate this information, but we'll probably reach out to the internet service providers to push a message to the owners of those IP addresses. But either way, this is pretty cool, especially from a security research perspective. So be sure to check out the show notes for the article that has a ton of more information on their findings when observing the malware's behavior. Alright, you know I'm a sucker for a good AI story. Well, a former athletic director at a Pikesville high school in Baltimore used AI voice synthesis To put racist and anti semitic words into his principal's mouth. Now, I don't know what kind of beef this guy had with his principal, but that'll do it. That'll take care of it. Now before I move on, this former athletic director is, has been arrested by the Baltimore police and accused of using AI voice synthesis to clone his principal's voice, but the clip likely used technologies like 11 labs which do a very good job of cloning voices. The clip in question was posted to a popular Instagram account and I won't repeat the comments from the clip But you can check out the link by Ars Technica in the show notes to read what it said. You won't be surprised It's very racist and anti semitic But I can only imagine being a parent of a kid or someone on the PTO board or something like that Hearing these out of the principal's voice. They instantly believed it. They believed it to be true according to this article, and why wouldn't they? We're still in this day and age where we all know AI voice synthesis is a thing, yet we haven't trained our brains to question everything we hear. That's a big ask of your brain. So the principal was completely embarrassed and took some time off and denies making these comments, but what can you do? And it's kind of like watching a villain on a movie. If you see that person who plays the villain in real life, you're gonna have a gut reaction because you hated seeing them so much on the silver screen, right? So, his voice is already out there saying these things and people for a while, while there was an investigation, started to hate this man, started to have feelings about him. And so now that it's proven that he didn't say that, those feelings are still going to linger. So this is a very damaging thing, and it's only going to get worse. So we, as consumers of media, have to be vigilant about not believing everything we hear. Especially if there's no video attached, or if the video looks weird. We just can't be trusting everything we see or hear. And finally, the FCC has voted to restore net neutrality, reclassifying broadband service as a Title II telecommunications service to ensure a fast, open, and fair internet. This allows the FCC to protect the open internet by preventing internet service providers or other service providers on the internet from throttling. or blocking legal content. They also can't pay for prioritization of internet. It has to be free and fair for all. Now, I'm sure there are some caveats that not everyone will agree with, but this is good, and this restores the rules that were upheld by the DC Circuit in 2016. The Commission will also have the ability to revoke the authorizations of foreign owned entities. who pose a threat to national security to operate broadband networks in the United States, which is an authority the Commission has previously executed by revoking the operating authorities of four Chinese state owned carriers to provide voice services in the United States. The FCC is also allowed to get involved in internet outages. Now, If students can't go to school or remote workers can't go to work, the FCC can get involved and help restore those internet services. So TLDR, they're essentially treating internet like the critical infrastructure that it is. This has been the Daily Decrypt. This episode profiles the double murders of Baltimore City Police Officers 26-year-old Adam Vazquez and 34-year-old Leslie Ann Holliday, who were killed by Leslie's disgruntled ex-boyfriend, 33-year-old Eugene Victor Perry, Jr., on December 21, 2005. Eugene was a General Service Officer with the Maryland State Department of General Services and the murders occurred after Eugene went to Adam's home in the 300 block of M'Ladies Court in Pikesville and confronted the couple in Adam's bed. This episode also profiles the unsolved homicide of 37-year-old Gladys Faye Dobbins Beauchamp who was found brutally murdered near a wooded area near Crain Highway and Oak Manor Drive in Glen Burnie, on October 11, 1989.

Her classical studies also included training with Petrus Bosman, David Keener, and Christine Hennessy at National Academy of the Arts and Virginia School of the Arts. While pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in International Policy and Management Studies at Dickinson College from 1986 to 1990, she continued her study of classical ballet with the teachers of Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Her dance training includes Vaganova technique, French methodology, Martha Graham technique, and the Dance Education Program at Towson University. She has staged ballets including The Nutcracker and Swan Lake: Act II. For more than three decades, dancers under Engerman's tutelage have gone on to earn professional contracts and danced with companies including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Inc., Boston Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Nashville Ballet, Texture Ballet, Universal Ballet, the Vienna Opera Ballet, the Washington Ballet, and on Broadway. Pikeville was the next town over, not sure why they didnt name it scotts level rye.He owned it up to prohibition, and there is an elementary school and a tea kwan do facility named after him there.  His story ends hrer1936, Andrew W Merle acquires the brand and the recipeAndrew was not a distiller, but a business man who now owned a well known brand. But he found a distiller and sarted producing Pikesville Maryland RyeHe formed “standard distillers Products” (SDP), which was also associated with….. The most corporate nonsense name ever seen….”The Corporation Trust Corporation” (CTC)CTC owned Monumental distilling, which was where pikesville was made, in Lansdowne, Maryland.Majestic distilling corporationIn 1942, there was some accident at the distillery, the details and little known, but there was an explosion and smoke stacks fell.  pretty much right after this happened, Monumental distilling no longer existed, and it became majestic distilling. Owned by Zellic Cohen.It continued to be the distillery so whatever damage happened it was repairable.  And there are a few pictures that seem to be relatively minor in damage.1972Majestic may be owned by Cohen, but the Merle family still owns pikesville brand.1972 is the last year they distill anything, and the branding changes to Maryland-STYLE RyePreculation is out on where they got the juice.  Pikesville is the last maryland distiller at this time, so whatever the juice, its not coming from maryland. Most likely its pennsylvania  Could be publicker, AKA continental distillersThe were the original distillers of rittenhouse, so its possible its them and that would be the conection to heaven hill later (spoiler)Michters also could have produced it.1982Andrew Merle Jr. sells pikesville to Heaven hill.  Sales were low, and cost was high. It was time to get out.Note on monumentalMonumental is still around today as a brewery. Previously, she reported for the American Urban Radio Networks. A native of Baltimore and a graduate of Morgan State University, April is the longest serving Black female White House correspondent covering urban issues from one of the most prestigious beats in all of journalism. She has covered every President since Bill Clinton. She is also the author of four books, including The Presidency in Black and White (2015); Under Fire: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House (2018); and At Mama's Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White (2016). Her latest book is an homage to African American women, many of whom she has covered, all of whom she admires. It's called Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem. As a native Pennsylvanian deeply involved in the pro-Israel community, the mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh deeply affected him. That tragic event spurred Mittleman to write his book, with the hope of it helping to showcase the good in the world that is done for others by those outside their religion, race, or nationality. He works at the nexus of politics, policymaking and the press in Washington, DC. Mittleman has run a public affairs and strategic communications firm, Keystone Strategy + Advocacy, LLC serving internationally known clients that have ranged from heads of state, celebrities, and global business leaders. Prior to that, he served as a senior advisor to a United States senator for eight years. He also earlier had served as a grant writer at a Croatia-based NGO. He is a columnist for The Times of Israel and has contributed articles to USA Today Network, Baltimore Jewish Times, The Morning Call, The Jerusalem Post, Washington Examiner, The Patriot News, Pittsburgh Tribune Review, NorthJersey.com, Modern Diplomacy, and The Jewish Exponent. He earned a BA from The Department of American Studies from The George Washington University, and his MPA from Fels Institute of Government at University of Pennsylvania. Proficient in both modern and biblical Hebrew, he has formally studied the language and traditional Jewish texts since kindergarten and travels regularly to Israel. In total, Mittleman has visited over 40 countries. In this episode of Pull Up A Chair, we sit down with Linda Miller and her daughter Karen Singer. Back in the seventies and eighties, Linda volunteered with HIAS - Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society - to help the Soviet refugees settle in Baltimore. She and her family helped them rent apartments and start a new life. And to get a break from the city, they invited them to their farm in Pikesville. Linda's volunteer work complimented her job as a social worker in Baltimore city schools where she was instrumental in launching the Project Fresh Start program, designed to provide assistance to eligible homeless families. Project FRESH Start still exists today in some form with Catholic Charities. Linda kept busy working and volunteering - all while raising her family, together with her husband Howard, on a sheep farm in Pikesville. Listen to learn more about life on the farm.
