In this conversation, Adi Tilford and Sally Henry discuss the importance of rest and Sabbath. They explore the cultural messages around productivity and the need to constantly be doing something. They also discuss the role of rest in sustainability and balance, and how it allows us to have a more realistic perspective of our role in the world. Sally emphasizes the importance of checking out from work and responsibilities and taking time to rest and recharge. They also touch on the idea of seasons and how there are times when we need more rest and times when we need less. Rest is essential for growth, healing, and recovery. It rejuvenates us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Jesus modeled the importance of rest by stopping and allowing life to be interrupted. Rest is a rebellion against our go-go culture. It is a time to reset, recover, and think clearly. Rest is a need that should be met, just like any other need. When we embrace rest, beautiful things can come out of it. We need to prioritize rest and allow ourselves to be refreshed. What may be the most challenging aspect for you? 2. What are words you would use to describe yourself when you aren't intentionally taking time to rest and get replenished? What distracts you from resting? 3. Ask God if He is inviting you to intentionally take one day a week to rest from work. If so, ask him which day, and/or time periods, would be best for you and your family. Does the day you currently rest on, still work best for you and/or you and your family? 4. What will you do on your Sabbath rest times and your dedicated day to rest? Make a list of the life giving, healing and restorative activities/practices that you're curious about including in your week. Consider how you, and/or you and your family can rest with Jesus and worship him throughout your week. Ask yourself, what brings my soul joy and delight. 5. They share personal experiences and stories related to napping and the challenges of finding time to rest in a busy culture. They explore the different definitions of rest, Sabbath, and sabbatical, highlighting the need for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual rest. The conversation emphasizes the importance of silence and solitude as practices that can lead to rest for the soul. They also discuss the concept of retreat as a reset and a way to find rest in God. Rest, Sabbath, and sabbatical are important practices that allow us to find renewal and connect with God. It can be challenging to let go of our plans and embrace rest, but it is necessary for our well-being. Resting our bodies and minds in different ways is important, and activities like running, painting, walking, swimming, and playing can all be restful. Sabbath is a gift from God and can be practiced in different ways, honoring each person's schedule and needs. It is a time to delight in God, play, worship, and give God the best of our day. Sabbath is not about legalism, but about surrendering to God and trusting that He can do the work we are not doing. Sabbath can also include the gift of sexual intimacy with our spouse. It is important to find what brings us delight and rest, and to invite others to join us in Sabbath practices. Sally shares her reflective writing on the journey of forgiveness in the Ignite Insight episode! Hi there, I'm Sally Henry. I am wife to Kim, mother of Sarah and Sean and grandmother of three crazy boys: Rilo, Rocco and Vito. I also have two sisters who sandwich me and I love dearly. I am a writer, pastor, musician and listener. As an Enneagram 9, I love having people in our home, cooking for friends and family, having meaningful conversations and doing work that makes a difference. I am an ordained Presbyterian minister, but currently work as a behavioral health care coordinator working with families who have children coming out of mental health crises. Kim and I host a house church every other week in our home, I've taken up lap swimming to be active and work out stress and therapy to keep chipping away at all those things that keep me from being truly whole. I turned 60 in 2023, and it was my best birthday yet. I don't do “churchy talk” and I'm usually 5-7 years behind the latest trends (be they clothing, social media or catchy phrases). I believe in transparency and sharing our stories because that's how we learn from each other and grow as individuals, and I've been sharing my sh$% for a long time now. Oh, and I try to sometimes filter for the sake of others (that's the Enneagram 9 in me), but sometimes a good f-bomb is what's appropriate. Sorry not sorry. In this episode of '8,000 Promises,' host Adi Tilford, alongside guests Tiffany (Tiff) and Jayme, delve into the profound topic of forgiveness within the Christian faith. Tiffany, a respiratory therapist, mom, and soon-to-be-published author, and Jayme, an amazing mom deeply involved in Young Life, share their personal journeys and struggles with understanding and practicing forgiveness. The discussion evolves to a deeper exploration of what forgiveness truly means, especially in challenging times. They ponder the difference between forgiving as God does—instantly and completely—and human forgiveness, which they note as a process filled with struggle, repeated efforts, and sometimes, shame for not achieving immediate closure. Additionally, the group discusses the concept of forgiveness as not just a one-time act but a repeated choice to let go of bitterness and anger, with God's help. Touching on forgiveness in the context of both interpersonal relationships and broader social injustices, they clarify that forgiveness does not necessarily imply restored trust or relationship. The episode closes with reflections on delight in daily life and the metaphorical packing of one's wounds with love, truth, and God's goodness as a way to heal and find freedom in forgiveness. 00:00 Welcome to Another Episode of 8,000 Promises 00:06 Introducing the Nerdy Bible Girls 02:34 Exploring the Complexities of Forgiveness 04:41 The Process of Forgiveness: Insights and Reflections 09:56 Forgiveness as a Continuous Journey 15:51 The Role of God in the Process of Forgiveness 21:01 Exploring Forgiveness and Relationship Healing 21:46 The Complex Nature of Forgiveness and Trust 22:35 Spiritual Insights on Forgiveness 23:19 Healing Wounds: A Metaphor for Forgiveness 25:38 The Journey of Forgiveness and Letting Go 26:56 Scriptural Reflections and Personal Growth 30:27 The Power of Naming and Trusting in God's Process 39:44 Embracing God's Truth and Love in Healing 44:01 Sharing Delights and Reflecting on God's Goodness You can find me on Instagram at AdiTilfordWrites, Facebook at AdiTilford-Author and at my website AdiTilford.com. While there, he discovered his passion for helping people heal from their psychological hurts; after he graduated he went to University of Colorado in Colorado Springs for his Master's degree in counseling and human development. He started out as a school counselor, working first with elementary-age students and then later with middle-school ages. During the latter half of that time, he was working after hours as a counselor to gain his licensure status. When he achieved that, he left the education system and started working in a group counseling practice specializing in adolescents and couples. Last June, he opened up his own solo private practice -- Renewed Life Counseling -- and has since gained additional certification in working with trauma. Now, he operates his private practice in Colorado Springs, specializing in using innovative and integrative counseling techniques to help people heal from trauma of all kinds but particularly in the areas of spiritual trauma and religious abuse. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adi-tilford/support

Kristen Brock shares from her blog posts in 2020 with a call to action to become more informed. This episode or Kristen's new podcast is a great place to start. Kristen runs Kiongozi Consulting, an LLC that trains people and organizations in trauma-informed care. She is also the executive director of Friends of Ruwenzori a non-profit that supports an NGO in Uganda. Her lifelong commitment to advocating for and empowering underserved communities of all stripes has seen her work with communities including US Veterans, families living under the poverty line, at-risk youth, and HIV+ communities in Africa. Kristen believes that the church should be a place for healing, a place that stands for the oppressed and vulnerable, and should be the bedrock of justice. She believes we can create a body of believers who don't retraumatize and who understand how deeply we have hurt our brothers and sisters. As a solo mom to three young men, Kristen added to her family by adopting through the foster system. Hearing the call to establish a voice around trauma, race, adoption, and parenting — all grounded in her faith she is under the constant supervision of two exceptionally friendly dogs and two strong-willed cats. Kristen lives in Novato, California, and is a die-hard 49ers, Giants, and Warriors fan. While not doing “mom-dependent” study with her youngest or wrangling one of many home improvement projects, Kristen can be found whipping up some baked goods, working on a new podcast, or hiking in the warm Northern Californian hills. Kristen holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching credential from Wheaton College in Illinois, and a Master of Science from San Diego State University in Marriage and Family Counseling and is working toward a Masters in Theology and Social Justice at Northeastern Seminary.
