Before diving into the episode, don't forget to click the link and explore how Bliss can transform your everyday experiences. https://www.mswnutrition.com/products/bliss/?ref=nursedoza 1. Diet and Bloating Examine your diet to identify potential causes of bloat. Low Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides And Polyols (FODMAP) Diet is highly recommended for treating IBS symptoms¹. IBS diagnosis is based on the Rome IV criteria, highlighting the relation of abdominal pain with defecation and changes in bowel habits¹. A significant percentage of IBS patients, especially women, associate their symptoms with food intake. Bloating and abdominal pain are the most frequent complaints¹. Commonly reported dietary triggers include carbohydrates, fatty foods, coffee, alcohol, and hot spices¹. Gluten can disrupt bowel barrier functions, especially in certain patients akin to celiac individuals¹. Excessive fructose intake exacerbates NAFLD markers² and can disturb the intestinal barrier, intensifying liver inflammation and fructose conversion into fatty deposits³. ¹ ² ³ 2. Gut Health and Bloating Address gut health to alleviate bloating. DGBIs encompass conditions like IBS, reflux hypersensitivity, and functional dyspepsia⁴. Several factors, including past infections and psychological conditions, can lead to DGBIs⁴. Disorders of gut–brain interaction or FGIDs are recognized as microbiota–gut–brain abnormalities prevalent worldwide⁵. Gut microbiota is susceptible to changes due to varying factors like diet and psychological state⁵. Methanogenic microbes in the colon can lead to slowed gut transit and constipation due to serotonin depletion⁵. ⁴ ⁵ 3. Bloodwork and Bloating Seek bloodwork to identify underlying causes. hs-CRP is linked with NAFLD⁶. IBS has been found to predict higher hs-CRP levels⁷. Elevated ALT is often observed in IBS patients⁸. Excessive gas correlates significantly with liver steatosis and heightened ALT levels⁹. ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ 4. Liver Health and Bloating Support the liver for better digestion. IBS symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating can also indicate NAFLD¹⁰. Cholecystitis can lead to abdominal bloating¹¹. The gallbladder isn't essential for a healthy life¹¹. ¹⁰ ¹¹ 5. Mood, Serotonin, and Bloating Maintain a balanced mood and serotonin levels to manage bloating. Serotonin has diverse intestinal functions¹². IBS might be associated with serotonin dysfunction affecting gut motility¹². Changes in serotonin levels can be addressed with specific medications for symptom relief¹³. Essential components for serotonin synthesis include tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) and pyridoxine (vitamin B6)¹⁴. ¹² ¹³ ¹⁴ As you've learned today, neurotransmitter balance plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. 5 benefits of yoga in morning

Knowandask

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2023 2:36

Practicing yoga in the morning offers numerous benefits for both the body and mind. Here are five benefits of practicing yoga in the morning: Increased Energy and Alertness: Starting your day with a yoga session helps awaken your body and mind. The combination of gentle stretches, deep breathing, and mindful movement increases blood circulation, oxygen flow, and releases endorphins. This revitalizes your system, leaving you feeling more energized, focused, and ready to take on the day. Improved Flexibility and Strength: Regular morning yoga practice can significantly enhance flexibility and strength. The morning is an ideal time for yoga as your muscles and joints are well-rested after a night's sleep. Consistent practice helps to lengthen and tone muscles, increase range of motion, and improve overall flexibility. It also strengthens the muscles, improving posture, stability, and reducing the risk of injuries. Enhanced Mental Clarity and Focus: Yoga combines physical postures with mindful breathing and meditation techniques. This meditative aspect of yoga practiced in the morning can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve mental clarity. By focusing on the breath and being present in the practice, you cultivate a state of mindfulness that carries over into the rest of your day, allowing you to approach tasks with increased focus and clarity. Stress Relief and Emotional Well-being: Morning yoga practice is an excellent way to manage stress and promote emotional well-being. Through the practice of asanas (yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing exercises), you activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which induces a relaxation response, reduces anxiety, and lowers cortisol levels. This helps to alleviate stress, promote emotional balance, and create a sense of inner calm and peace. Better Digestion and Detoxification: Yoga postures, particularly twists and forward bends, stimulate the digestive system, aiding in better digestion and detoxification. By compressing and stretching the abdominal area, yoga helps massage and tone the internal organs, improving digestion, and relieving constipation or bloating. The gentle movements and deep breathing also enhance the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the organs, promoting their optimal function.

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 307: Taking Diet-Culture Out of Ayurveda with Diane Finlayson    Description: One of the harmful messages that we get in the broader health and wellness industry and in the yoga world is arounddiet culture. Diane Finlayson shares her insights.   Diane Finlayson has been educating yoga teachers, therapists, ayurvedic and meditation facilitators for the past 20 years. Prior to that, Diane had 3 yoga studios and ran YTT 200/300 Ayurveda trainings as well as meditation facilitator trainings for 15 years. Diane also serves the recovery community in her private practice.   Diane explains what Ayurveda is and how colonization has affected Ayurveda. She highlights the differences in practice between North America and India, and the scope of practice of different practitioners in the industry and what to be aware of before working with someone in Ayurveda. Diane also shares more about the ways in which diet culture can show up, what she does when she sees it online, and how people interested in adopting Ayurvedic practices can learn and integrate them in their lives more safely.   Key Takeaways: [3:14] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Diane Finlayson. Breathing, digestion, and stress management go hand-in-hand! This week's article is a look at how belly breathing could be the key to better digestion. Deep belly breathing can actually massage the contents of the gut helping move food through the body for better elimination. Tune in to hear more about this and tips on a non cost method that is essential to life! When we activate the diaphragm with breath, it creates a gentle massaging action for internal organs like the intestines and stomach. In doing so, it can reduce abdominal pain, urgency, bloating, and constipation. Nine Tips to Better Digestion Approximately 75 percent of Americans are living with digestive symptoms like diarrhea, gas, bloating and abdominal pain. The gut is one of the core disease-fighting systems of the human body. First, the acid and enzymes in the stomach work to sterilize our food and, protect the body from illness and infection. Our digestive tract is an important source of immune function in the body. Another very important aspect of improving digestion is to improve your mental health since there is scientific research explaining the gut brain connection. A troubled intestine sends signals to the brain, just like a troubled brain sends signals to the gut. Therefore, a person's gut or intestinal distress can be trigger anxiety, stress, and/or depression. It is because the brain and the gut (gastrointestinal system) are intimately connected. Here's to you incorporating these nine tips and improve your digestion while reaching total wellness of mind and body. Watch the video to learn the 9 Tips to Improve Digestion. 7 Natural foods that promote gut health & better digestion - Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City NC, Chiropractor You don’t have to rely on processed foods to nourish, sustain, and grow good gut bacteria to aid nutrition and boost your health. Some natural foods can help boost your gut microbiota. Most of these foods contain dietary fibers and other compounds like polyphenols, and the gut bacteria break them down into vitamins and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Check out all these foods that are easy to find to promote your gut health: Apples You might have heard the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This means that apple contains many health properties that keep your health in good shape. One of such properties is boosting your gut microbiota. This fruit comes in varieties of colors that can taste sweet, tart, and lip-puckeringly sour.  Besides, they contain a prebiotic fiber called pectin, which is hard for the body to digest. But your gut bacteria digest and transform this fiber into SCFAs, like butyrate and propionate. These SCFAs serve as nutrients for the gut microbes to help boost your immunity and strengthen your gut health in general.  Asparagus This green vegetable is rich in nutrients and it is enjoyed in many cuisines. It naturally contains a kind of prebiotic fiber called inulin, which is acted upon by Faecalibacterium and Eubacterium present in the gut. Some studies have also shown the inulin increases the number of Akkeermansia muciniphilia, another beneficial bacteria found in the gut of lean people. Oats Oats are a rich source of beta-glucan, which is a prebiotic dietary fiber fermented by the gut microbiome, thereby promoting their growth and activity. Their soluble fiber content dissolves in water to produce a thick gel that digests slowly, keeping you fuller for longer. The beta-glucan content of oats also helps to lower cholesterol. Green plantain Green plantains are not so sweet, but they are delicious when cooked. They are rich in prebiotic resistant starch that serves as food for the butyrate-producing bacteria in the gut. These organisms break down the starch into beneficial short-chain fatty acids that maintain your gut lining and combat inflammation. Rye Rye is richer in fiber than wheat, and it has less gluten, which makes it suitable for producing tighter bread, with rich flavors. The grain contains fructan and arabinoxylan, which increases the gut abundance of Bifidobacteria- a bacteria that produces substances like SCFAs and antimicrobial defenses to support your gut environment and other beneficial microbes. Flaxseed The flax seeds have a tough hull, and they are often soaked before consuming. However, you can buy the ground flaxseed to save yourself the stress of processing. These seeds support gut health by promoting the production of mucus. More so, some studies have shown that these seeds protect against colon cancer and reduce gut inflammation. Besides, they contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. The insoluble fiber content supports bowel movements and prevents constipation.     Onions Onions are a good source of prebiotics that support your gut health. It also contains inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) that boosts immunity and prevent diseases. You may not like onions because they burn your eyeballs, but if you want to strengthen your gut microbiota, it is worth adding them to your meals. These natural foods and a host of others like mangoes, wild salmon, garlic, etc, work well to help you improve your gut health. You can consult Dr. Jason Jones at our Chiropractic office at Elizabeth City, NC to get more recommendations on natural foods to improve the balance of your gut microbiota.

This simple diaphragmatic breathing exercise can help improve digestion, lower cortisol, increase energy, and make you more AWESOME. Here's what you do: Stand up, staying still, and close your eyes. Inhale deeply until you can’t take in anymore air. Exhale until all air has been emptied from your lungs. Keep your eyes closed! Now, inhale again while picturing the number 1. Keep the air in your lungs for a few seconds, then let it all out. Inhale again while picturing the number 2. Hold your breath while counting silently to 3, then let it all out again. Repeat these steps until you’ve reached 8. Feel free to count higher if you feel comfortable. Give this a try before each meal and tell me how it goes! Do you find yourself over-consuming food a little and indulging in a little bit too much sugar or caffeine or alcohol during the holidays? Implement these simple strategies to help support your digestive system and feel amazing over the holiday season! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode41. Topics Discussed in this Episode: 11 simple strategies that you can implement to optimize your digestion The different organs and body parts that play important roles in digestion Why chewing your food is important The different types of fiber and why you should get plenty of it How exercise helps digestion Why digestive enzymes are good for you How smoking affects the digestive system How excess weight impacts digestion Why probiotics are good for you Key Takeaways: If you can’t chew your food properly and sit down and have a meal that is not rushed, you end up putting a lot of stress on the organs that are involved in digestion. And now all of these organs have to work extra hard in order to break down this food. This also leads to more bloating and more gas. Your brain needs time to receive the signal that you’re full, so don’t rush through your meals but slow down and take the time to chew your food. Fiber helps to keep food moving through your intestines easily. Soluble fiber draws in water and helps to prevent the stool from being too watery, while insoluble fiber helps to add bulk to your stool. Digestive enzymes help to break down the carbs, the fats, and the proteins in your meals. Smoking weakens the valve at the end of the esophagus, which leads to more acid reflux and more heartburn. Alcohol interferes with acid secretion, your stomach muscles, and nutrient absorption Having a few extra pounds can cause digestive issues because the valve between the stomach and the esophagus sometimes won’t close completely, which allows stomach acid to go back into the esophagus.   Action Steps:   11 Steps to Better Digestion   Focus on chewing your food. Get in plenty of fiber. Once you increase your fiber intake, make sure that you also drink a lot of water. The bare minimum is 2 liters per day. Exercise. Reduce stress. Take digestive enzymes Include warm foods in your meals Quit smoking Drink less alcohol Get rid of excess weight Take probiotics Improve your digestion in the morning with my anti-aging elixir: 250 mL warm water + 1 T apple cider vinegar + freshly squeezed lemon (½ of a lemon) + 1 scoop collagen powder. Drink bone broth.   Samantha said: “[Chewing your food] is really underestimated but it’s so critical for proper digestion. The more you can break down your food in your mouth, the less work has to be done later on with all your other organs.” “Spend some time writing out what’s possible for your future, because we are all so deserving of so much more joy and love and laughter and ease and grace and flow in our lives.”   Thanks for listening! Have you ever heard of Swedish Bitters?  The sheer bitterness of the tinctures or liquid releases digestive enzymes and  stimulates your stomach acid , making it easier for it to go to work digesting whatever food you eat.  Best to take it 20-30 minutes before a heavy meal or any time your stomach is feeling uneasy. Shake well before using.  Adults take 1-2 teaspoons (tsp) daily. Not for use in children under 18 years of age. Do not exceed recommended dosage. Not for long term use.  For an exciting alternative way to take Swedish Bitters, add to a cup of herbal tea, like Chamomile or Peppermint, or to a glass of your favorite fruit juice.  Also great mixed with seltzer water. Jasmine Hemsley has been a force in the wellness world since she started the world-famous Hemsley + Hemsley brand alongside her sister Melissa in 2014. Their first book, The Art of Eating Well, flipped the script on dieting and proved that eating well can be delicious, soul-satisfying, and not at all restrictive. Since this book became an international best-seller, Jasmine has served as a food consultant to a celebrity clientele, penned two more cookbooks, and traveled the world sharing her food philosophy with the masses. Along the way, she stumbled into a food philosophy that would ultimately change her life: ayurveda. The answer to why she always preferred hot, stewy foods and would take a burger over a salad any day, ayurveda is an ancient Indian approach to whole-body healing that focuses on centers of heat within the body. It extends far beyond food and touches on how we can find balance across our lives. Though it dates back around 5,000 years, its remedies for everything from poor digestion to anxiety continue to prove effective today. In this episode, Jasmine, a longtime friend of mbg, mbg Collective member, and workshop host at mbg's revitalize event last month, takes us through the three different ayurvedic personalities, or doshas, and how to find out which one you are. Along the way, she dispels some of the leading myths about practice, lists the little ayurvedic-approved tweaks that she can't live without, and provides top tips for anyone looking to dive deeper into this timeless approach to healing. Today we are here with Allison Pelot, a fellow Portland-based fitness guru and amazing holistic nutrition and fitness coach. We are so excited to talk about achieving hormonal balance with nutrition strategies. Can’t wait! Allison has a flourishing physical practice here in Portland where she hosts classes, offers nutritional and functional training as well as offering one on one coaching. She has been studying the biochemistry of the body for around 10 years now and applies this knowledge to help people feel and perform their best. Allison explains how she has seen many people struggle with digestion, even including foods that are considered health foods. Things like nuts and seeds, raw veggies, and grains tend to be difficult for digestive systems to process the nutrients properly and can often cause severe digestive discomfort. Allison’s Process: The typical process that Allison walks clients through checks these four boxes: 1) Discover Your Digestion: She encourages clients to keep a food log as well as a log of their temperature and pulse to discover how their physiology is responding to the food they eat and what patterns are noticing. 2) Cut Back: Reduce the consumption of common causes of discomfort like fried foods. It is important to meet the client where they are at to promote success. 3) Introduce Helpers: Allison advocates for consuming a raw carrot each day to introduce good bacteria back into the gut and remove the toxins that can cause imbalance and discomfort. 4) Find the Culprits: Find what works for your body and what is causing it to struggle to digest. Not all foods are created equal or elicit a positive response in your body. Some of Allison’s Favorite Easy-to-Digest Foods: o   1 Raw Carrot Each Day o   Coconut Oil/Butter o   Root Vegetables o   Fruits (Oranges!) o   Dairy (Cheese, specifically) o   Bone Broth o   Gelatin o   Shellfish/Oysters It is important to note that, as we’ve learned in the podcast many times, not all methods are right for all bodies. This is shown in the differing opinions and strategies of nutrition and wellness experts. So what can we all agree on? 2 Things that ALL Nutrition Experts Agree On: Food Journaling is SO important Add more Vegetables and Whole Foods Allison makes the point that while the therapies for better digestion tend to be rather simple, the things happening in your body are extremely complex. Everyone’s body is different so discovering what works for you is the most important thing. Your body will do its job if it is given the right tools. Understanding and Combating Hormonal Imbalance: In terms of hormone imbalance, this principle is also true. The body is always working to regulate itself, and it does so by creating many necessary hormones in the liver. Some very common symptoms of hormone imbalance include: o   Low Energy Levels o   Low Immunity or Frequent Colds o   Sleep Disorders or Low Quality Sleep All About Sleep: The importance of quality sleep is huge! A common problem for those who struggle with sleep is poor blood sugar regulation. This is caused by not eating frequently enough during the day or having an imbalance of hormones because of the foods you are consuming. Your liver needs the proper sugars and nutrients to produce hormones not only during the day, but also at night when you sleep. Allison offers some extremely helpful tips on getting a good night’s rest: o   Create a winding down routine o   Eliminate blue light (or use blue light glasses) a couple hours before bed o   Use natural lighting or salt lamps in the evening o   Spend time reading or relaxing before sleeping o   Drink a comforting glass of milk and honey before bed o   Spend time meditating to wind down The most important thing to remember is to find what works for you! You can find Allison’s awesome work at her website at pureenergypdx.com. Allison also hosts her own enlightening podcast, Integrate Yourself, which you can find on iTunes, Android, Stitcher, and Youtube. Be sure to check her out to get a sneak peek at the new course she is creating all about Better Digestion for Hormonal Balance.
