In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. John Douillard, a leading expert in Ayurvedic medicine and founder of LifeSpa.com. I read his book Body, Mind, and Sport about 20 years ago, and it was one of the first books I found that combined breath work and movement. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. John blends ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern science to help people achieve lasting health, vitality, and longevity. We talk about how aligning your diet and lifestyle with your dosha and the seasons can optimize gut health and detoxification. You’ll learn why today’s extreme wellness trends might work short-term but often miss the root causes of poor health. I discuss how nasal and diaphragmatic breathing techniques—practiced by elite athletes and used by Dr. John in his own triathlon training—can improve oxygen delivery, reduce stress, and open up the diaphragm. Dr. John explains that 91% of athletes don’t have a fully contracting and relaxing diaphragm because of excessive sitting, which keeps the diaphragm in a pre-contracted, rigid state. He walks us through a basic Ayurvedic breathing technique called DPR—breathing through the belly, chest, and upper chest while raising your arms—to fully engage and loosen the diaphragm. This breath work pumps the lymphatic system, clears toxins, and helps with brain health. We also cover the “bellows breathing” exercise, or “The One Minute Meditation,” a powerful technique to open the rib cage, increase energy, and enter a deep state of calm. This conversation cuts through the noise of trendy health advice, so if you want to reconnect with time-tested strategies rooted in Ayurveda that support long-term well-being, you don’t want to miss this show. Dr. John Douillard is a globally recognized expert in Ayurveda and the founder of LifeSpa.com—one of the world’s most trusted sources for evidence-based Ayurvedic healthcare. He’s authored seven books and over 1,500 articles, helping millions reverse aging and heal naturally. Dr. John began his Ayurvedic studies in India in 1986 and later partnered with Deepak Chopra to train Western doctors in Ayurvedic medicine. He also served as Director of Player Development for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and has applied Ayurvedic techniques to improve athletic performance, working with top athletes including Billie Jean King. Check out his website, www.lifespa.com, and explore his books—especially Body, Mind, and Sport, which explores how nasal breathing can enhance performance and reduce the stress of exercise. Resistant starch, a type of fibre that resists digestion in the small intestine, is a valuable food source for gut bacteria in the large intestine. These bacteria ferment resistant starch, producing beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate, which supports gut health and protects against diseases. In this episode I explain why resistant starch is important to have in your diet, the foods that contain it and how you can use one simple food to feed your beneficial bacteria. #endometriosis #endometriosissymptoms #endometriosisdiet #nutritionforendometriosis #reduceendometriosissymptoms #guthealth #gutbacteria #gutmicrobiome

Before diving into the episode, don't forget to click the link and explore how Bliss can transform your everyday experiences. https://www.mswnutrition.com/products/bliss/?ref=nursedoza 1. Diet and Bloating Examine your diet to identify potential causes of bloat. Low Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides And Polyols (FODMAP) Diet is highly recommended for treating IBS symptoms¹. IBS diagnosis is based on the Rome IV criteria, highlighting the relation of abdominal pain with defecation and changes in bowel habits¹. A significant percentage of IBS patients, especially women, associate their symptoms with food intake. Bloating and abdominal pain are the most frequent complaints¹. Commonly reported dietary triggers include carbohydrates, fatty foods, coffee, alcohol, and hot spices¹. Gluten can disrupt bowel barrier functions, especially in certain patients akin to celiac individuals¹. Excessive fructose intake exacerbates NAFLD markers² and can disturb the intestinal barrier, intensifying liver inflammation and fructose conversion into fatty deposits³. ¹ ² ³ 2. Gut Health and Bloating Address gut health to alleviate bloating. DGBIs encompass conditions like IBS, reflux hypersensitivity, and functional dyspepsia⁴. Several factors, including past infections and psychological conditions, can lead to DGBIs⁴. Disorders of gut–brain interaction or FGIDs are recognized as microbiota–gut–brain abnormalities prevalent worldwide⁵. Gut microbiota is susceptible to changes due to varying factors like diet and psychological state⁵. Methanogenic microbes in the colon can lead to slowed gut transit and constipation due to serotonin depletion⁵. ⁴ ⁵ 3. Bloodwork and Bloating Seek bloodwork to identify underlying causes. hs-CRP is linked with NAFLD⁶. IBS has been found to predict higher hs-CRP levels⁷. Elevated ALT is often observed in IBS patients⁸. Excessive gas correlates significantly with liver steatosis and heightened ALT levels⁹. ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ 4. Liver Health and Bloating Support the liver for better digestion. IBS symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating can also indicate NAFLD¹⁰. Cholecystitis can lead to abdominal bloating¹¹. The gallbladder isn't essential for a healthy life¹¹. ¹⁰ ¹¹ 5. Mood, Serotonin, and Bloating Maintain a balanced mood and serotonin levels to manage bloating. Serotonin has diverse intestinal functions¹². IBS might be associated with serotonin dysfunction affecting gut motility¹². Changes in serotonin levels can be addressed with specific medications for symptom relief¹³. Essential components for serotonin synthesis include tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) and pyridoxine (vitamin B6)¹⁴. ¹² ¹³ ¹⁴ As you've learned today, neurotransmitter balance plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. Tune in to hear more about this and tips on a non cost method that is essential to life! When we activate the diaphragm with breath, it creates a gentle massaging action for internal organs like the intestines and stomach.
