You can watch this on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fl7Y4IG_eBc When you hire a Realtor®, remember the advice of Warren Buffet: “In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.” 0:00 - Introduction. Also, Jason explains ethics with a great reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean's Pirate's Code. 1) Your return to shore wasn't part of our deal. 2) You have to be a pirate to subscribe to the Pirate's Code — and you're not. 3) “The Code is more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules.” 2:36 - Who does the Code of Ethics apply to? Is there an order to it? Yes. The Code of Ethics is provided by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), so it doesn't apply to all agents. Realtors are bound by it. The duties of the Code of Ethics apply to clients first, the public second, and other agents third. 5:03 - Fiduciary duty. “How do I know you're going to be a good agent?” We have a fiduciary duty, which means your Realtor has duties to clients including care, obedience, accounting, loyalty, and disclosure. 7:26 - Article 11: Comparative Market Analysis (CMAs). If a Realtor doesn't understand or have experience in an area, type of property, etc; they are required to disclose this fact as well as seek assistance from knowledgeable professionals.  11:56 - Out-of-state agents. Storytime with Tyler & Aric. High-dollar seller in Utah was buying in another state with a close family friend. Some issues arose with the out-of-state purchase, which jeopardized our seller's financial position. The out-of-state agent advised our client on Utah laws, and this represents a serious ethical breach. Open communication and intentional ethical posturing go a long way to avoiding ethical issues.    17:13 - Interview your agent! Put your best questions in the comments. 18:15 - 2 Phrases that guide ethics. First: intention. What do you intend to do? Second: acting in good faith. Are you doing everything you can to represent your intention clearly? The Golden Rule is a pretty good way to evaluate how ethical behavior is.  22:48 - What'd we learn today? 24:37 - Bloopers. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is copyrighted in 2003 by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. The power of storytelling is evident in so many parts of our society. The movie and television industries are bigger than ever and growing more so each year. Storytelling is now and has been used effectively in the realm of politics for a long time. So what about science? Are there lessons to be learned from storytellers by scientists who wish to communicate their work more effectively to the public at large? Jack Dannibale is the Founder and President at Massimo Inc. Jack and his team create compelling media campaigns with notable leaders such as President Barack Obama, and actor Matt Damon. Jack has also served as Senior Media Advisor and Chief Speechwriter for US House and Senate Democrats. Before his work in politics, Jack worked in Hollywood with Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Walt Disney Studios, where he focused on Motion Picture development, marketing and writing. Jack earned three Emmy Award nominations for his work at PBS.  Jack earned his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California in Writing for the Screen and Motion Picture Producing. Prior to that, Jack received his BA in Writing and Film, Summa Cum Laude, also at USC.  What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [3:03] What drew Jack to his field [5:59] Jack’s advice for scientists who want to tell their story [9:17] Crafting a story out of scientific research and data [13:16 Connecting with your audience [19:48] The power of a shared community [24:39] The problem of “alternative facts” Connect with Jack Dannibale  Massimo Inc. LinkedIn for Jack   The Strategy of crafting a story One of the greatest strengths of data and research - its objectivity - can also be a hurdle to the effective communication of science to the public at large. The layperson in society is more used to communication that is closer in form to that of a narrative. What are the possible ways around this? What can scientists and researchers do to find better ways to communicate with the public? In this episode, Jack Dannibale has some great ideas. The key element of successful communication of ideas is connection. Jack suggests marrying the “prose” of data and research with some aspects of storytelling to create a more personal connection with listeners and readers. What does this mean to them? How will this affect them personally? That is the way to connect with audiences.  Know your audience The next step is to know what the best way to go about connecting with your audience. For that to be successful you have to know them. When crafting a story, writers sometimes like to stress that you should start at the end. What is the end goal or end result you want? What does a connection with the audience look like? After finding out what your goal is, you can work backward from there to build your connection, as Jack points out. By bringing the results of research and data into their logical conclusion, you can create a connection and a sense of community with the audience and how it impacts them, whether it be through the environment or the world at large, or even a combination of the two. Techniques like these take research and elevate it from data on a page into the imagination and lives of the public. Learn more about Jack Dannibale on this week’s episode of When Science Speaks. Roger Barton has edited and worked on some of the most iconic films of a generation such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Titanic, World War Z, Terminator: Genesis, and the last five ‘Transformers’ films (this is just the ‘short’ list). He has lived many long days in the cutting room with directors such as James Cameron, Michael Bay, George Lucas, Joe Carnahan, and more. And that’s what this episode is all about today: “Living” in the cutting room and what that can do to your mental health, your physical health, your relationships, and your well-being. Roger is no stranger to burnout on the job, and in this interview he was extremely candid, open, and honest about how his exploding career as a young up-and-coming feature editor cost him dearly in his personal life as well as with his health. If you’re curious about what it’s really like working with the biggest directors on the biggest film imaginable, Roger gives you a peek inside his cutting room. Because of Roger’s love for both his craft but also his family, he spent years wondering if there was a better way to collaborate with directors & producers whereby he wouldn’t have to disappear for months at a time and sacrifice time with his family. And luckily for every editor around the world who has desperately wished and prayed for a technical solution that would allow you to work from home while not inhibiting the collaborative process, Roger has not only found the solution…he’s helping to build it and make it better. And that solution is Evercast. If you’re struggling with creative burnout right now or find yourself sacrificing time away from family when you know deep down it doesn’t have to be this way, I invite you to download my Ultimate Guide to Optimizing Your Creativity (and Avoiding Burnout) which offers over 50 pages of my best tips, tricks, and strategies to consistently stay focused and energized throughout your long workdays trapped in a dark room. Guest Bio: Facebook|LinkedIn Roger Barton began working in editorial on documentaries and made-for-TV movies including the Emmy award-winning “Indictment: The McMartin Trial.” He soon made the transition to motion pictures and in 1997 was an Associate Editor on the decade’s biggest blockbuster, “Titanic.” He quickly moved up the ladder, honing his skills at Jerry Bruckheimer Films on “Armageddon” and “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Since then, Barton has worked with Michael Bay on “Pearl Harbor,” “Bad Boys 2,” the Platinum Dunes release, “Amityville Horror,” “The Island,” and the last five “Transformers” films. During his career, Roger has cut for Hollywood’s leading filmmakers such as George Lucas on “Star Wars: Episode III”, the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer”, Jim Sheridan’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and two films for Director Joe Carnahan, “The Grey” and “The A-Team.” Beginning in 2013, Roger edited three films for Skydance Entertainment, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “World War Z,” and “Terminator: Genesis.” In 2016 Roger returned to with Jerry Bruckheimer on “Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales,” after which he joined the team cutting “Transformers, The Last Knight” which is his ninth collaboration with Michael Bay. In the summer of 2017, Roger began editing “Godzilla: King of Monsters” for Legendary Pictures but left when he became Co-Founder of Evercast — a live streaming creative collaboration platform. As more and more productions shoot out of town, Evercast is becoming widely adopted by Hollywood because keeping filmmakers connected maintains creative momentum, saves time, money and removes the need to travel post-production crews around the world for months at a time. While Roger was pitching Evercast to the Hollywood Studios, he also helped John Krasinski turn his 17 million dollar genre thriller “A Quiet Place” into a 334 million summer blockbuster. With Evercast gaining momentum of its own, Roger has returned to his passion of editing and is currently cutting “Six-Underground”, the most expensive Netflix project to date being directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds. Pleasantville (Harper)  One of Skylight Books' favorite local authors Attica Locke returns with her most ambitious novel to date, taking on business corruption, scheming local politicians and murder in Pleasantville, which brings back Black Water Rising's morally conflicted environmental attorney Jay Porter. It's now 1996, fifteen years since Black Water Rising, and Porter is struggling to cope with a family tragedy.  He's decided to quit the law after he wraps up his final case: representing the citizens of Pleasantville, a storied neighborhood on the north side of Houston, against the chemical giant ProFerma. Houston's mayoral election is pending, and Pleasantville is a key electoral district due to the long-time organizing efforts of its now elderly “patriarch” Sam Hathorne. Its endorsement can make or break a candidate's chances. Sam's son, Axel, Houston's former police chief and a favorite of Pleasantville faces a run-off against the city's current District Attorney, Sandra Wolcott. Then Axel's nephew, Neal, is arrested for the murder of a young woman who disappeared while campaigning in Pleasantville. Sam coerces Jay into serving as Neal's defense attorney, even though Jay insists he's not qualified. As he tries to untangle the complicated knot of politics, lies, and family secrets at the heart of the Hathorne campaign, Jay finds that the case puts an entire electoral process on trial, revealing the lengths to which those with power are willing to go to keep it. Attica Locke's first novel, Black Water Rising, was nominated for a 2010 Edgar Award, an NAACP Image Award, as well as a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was short-listed for the prestigious Orange Prize in the UK (now the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction).  Her second book, The Cutting Season, published by Dennis Lehane books, is a national bestseller, and, like her debut, was a finalist for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award.  It was also named an Honor Book by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, was long-listed for the Chautauqua Prize, and is the 2013 winner of the Ernest Gaines Award for Literary Excellence, the largest literary prize for African-Americans. A graduate of Northwestern University, Locke was a fellow at the Sundance Institute's Feature Filmmakers Lab and had planned a career as a movie director, but got derailed along the way, spending many years as a screenwriter-for-hire.  She wrote scripts for Paramount, Warner Bros, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, HBO, and Dreamworks.  Highly paid, yet unproduced, Locke grew restless with the Hollywood studio system. “There were days I felt like I was writing solely for the pleasure of a group of studio execs, all with a fifteen-mile radius of Burbank, California, that my work had no meaning beyond that.”  In 2005, she gave herself one year to change this – during which she wrote the first draft of Black Water Rising.  “Besides motherhood, it was the single most transformative experience of my life.” After two books, she felt pulled toward Hollywood again, explicitly television, where great drama is being produced “like I haven't seen in my lifetime.”  She is currently co-producer and writer on the upcoming Fox drama, Empire, created by Lee Daniels (The Butler, Precious) and Danny Strong (Game Change, The Hunger Games) and premiering in January 2015. Locke is a member of the academy for the Folio Prize in the UK and is also on the board of directors for the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.   A native of Houston, Texas, Attica lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband and daughter.
