On this week's show,  we cellebrate the therapeutic nature of out-of-town rock shows with old friends, let there be rock with Drive-By Truckers, wake up to albums we slept on by Tuxedo and Chuck Prophet, and and spin fresh tracks from Parlor Greens, Waxahatchee & The Waterboys. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.

We're hearing a lot about diversity and inclusion these days (which is great!) but as we'll learn in this episode, those two words and what they stand for are at the very core of what guided the earliest days of Newport Folk and Jazz over sixty years ago, continuing to this day. And as we know, there is still much work to be done to make our world a just and equal place. Listen in as the women of Our Native Daughters share the experience of their powerful performance at Newport in 2019, their mission of amplifying the perspectives of Black American women from the time of slavery through the present, and discuss the ongoing need for better representation across genres - in particular Americana and Country - that have their roots in the black community, and at events like Newport Folk. Amplifying women's voices, and women of color, is an important part of this conversation, too, and Yola speaks on the importance of The Highwomen's debut at Newport Folk and Brandi Carlile's all female headlining set, as well as her own sense of purpose in occupying and owning space in what is currently an overwhelmingly white genre. We dive into the history of Newport and why the insistence racial equality and diversity of its lineups was an especially personal mission of George Wein's - one that he carried to New Orleans when creating Jazz Fest alongside the parents of Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe. and how that festival in turn helped to integrate New Orleans. And Colin Meloy and Judy Collins join us to talk about folk music's history as a tool for organizing and empowering the disenfranchised, especially through the voice of Pete Seeger. The fight continues to surround hate and force it to surrender. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. While they are not related, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig create beautifully kindred harmonies together as the indie-pop duo Lucius, and were hand-picked to grace the stage at the Hollywood Bowl when Brandi Carlile brought Joni Mitchell out to join them.  The first new music since their 2022 album Second Nature, “Stranger Danger” is written in response to the idea that “humans have imagined a backup plan — a ‘savior' to forgive us, to save us, to lean on… for ourselves, if and when things go wrong, but who/what/where is the backup plan for Mother Earth?”

Joni Mitchell's songs have soundtracked our lives and her pioneering work changed music forever. Jesca Hoop explores her extraordinary story to reveal the life behind the legend. In the first episode, we hear how young Joni loves to watch the trains go by from the window of her house in a Saskatchewan prairie town. Even as a child, there is a desire to see what's around the next bend. She's a tomboy and an athlete, until polio forces her into a period of convalescence; she's no longer picked first for sports teams but when she gets the use of her legs back she rock 'n' roll dances her way through her teens. Vocalist and songwriter Jess Wolfe talks about how this album was written while she processed her divorce and how the music is meant to make light through the darkness and dance through it. She also discusses the collaborations on the album with Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. “It's such a fine line to want to honor sadness and darkness . . . but also to want to somehow move it towards joy or bend it in a way that makes you want to move and want to celebrate something because life is short,” Wolfe says. Lucius - "Next To Normal" from the 2022 album Second Nature on Mom + Pop Records. After spending the past few years lending their voices to their friends' records such as The War on Drugs' I Don't Live Here Anymore and Brandi Carlile's In These Silent Days, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe are finally unveiling their latest album as Lucius. Titled Second Nature, the record is due out April 8th and features contributions from Drew Erickson, Rob Moose, and Gabriel Cabezas, plus backing vocals from Carlile and Sheryl Crow. Our Song of the Day is the album's lead single “Next to Normal.” An absolute banger of a track, the song is a groovy disco earworm that sees the duo channel the Bee Gees to great effect. If this is what the whole album sounds like then there's no way it doesn't end up on all the year-end lists! “It is a record that begs you not to sit in the difficult moments, but to dance through them,” Wolfe said of Second Nature in a statement. “It touches upon all these stages of grief—and some of that is breakthrough, by the way. Being able to have the full spectrum of the experience that we have had, or that I've had in my divorce, or that we had in lockdown, having our careers come to a halt, so to speak. I think you can really hear and feel the spectrum of emotion and hopefully find the joy in the darkness. It does exist. That's why we made Second Nature and why we wanted it to sound the way it did: our focus was on dancing our way through the darkness.” Watch the appropriately kaleidoscopic video for “Next to Normal” at the link below and check out Lucius' upcoming tour dates here (unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a Seattle show). This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 24, Winston's Birthday, which originally aired on May 7, 2013 and directed by Max Winkler and was written by Brett Baer & Dave Finkel. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess and Nick sleep together for the first time in the last episode! Before they get a chance to talk about it, they're split apart as they prepare for Cece's wedding the next day, Bob arrives, and a new job opportunity pops up for Jess. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Elizabeth work to define their relationship and it's Winston's BIRTHDAY?!We discuss Pop Culture References such as:When talking to Jess, Cece exclaimed her Uncle Shishir “had one scene with Salman Khan in Dabangg 2, and all of the sudden he thinks he's Amitabh Bachchan in Jhoom Barab-ar Jhoom.” Salman Khan Dabangg 2Amitabh BachchanJhoom Barab-ar JhoomHenna - In preparation for her wedding, Cece got her hands painted with henna. Additional Pop Culture References such as:“It Wasn't Me” - Shaggy - In the Schmidt and Elizabeth's flashback scene, this song played. "It Wasn't Me" is the first single from Jamaican reggae musician Shaggy's fifth studio album, Hot Shot. The song features vocals from Rikrok. The lyrics of the song depict one man (Rikrok) asking his friend (Shaggy) what to do after his girlfriend caught him cheating on her with "the girl next door". Mike Tyson - When Cece got henna on her face after sleeping on her hands, she thought she looked like Mike Tyson. Michael Gerard Tyson is a former American professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. Nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "Kid Dynamite" in his early career, and later known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet", Tyson is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. He also has notable tattoos on his face. Mandy Patinkin - Shivrang mentioned that Jess told him Cece looked like Mandy Patinkin with the henna smeared on her face. Mandel Bruce Patinkin is a Tony and Emmy award winning American actor and singer. He's prominently known for his role as Inigo Montoya in Rob Reiner's 1987 film The Princess Bride and as Saul Berenson in the Showtime series Homeland, where his character had a thick beard."Until We Get There" - Lucius - When Nick and Jess were on the roof at the end of the episode, this song played. Lucius is a four-piece indie pop band consisting of lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, drummer and producer Dan Molad, and lead guitarist Peter Lalish.”Until We Get There” is a song featured on the band's first studio album, Wildewoman, released in 2013.We also cover the moment Schmidt goes to find Elizabeth at the restaurant as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For “Not in the 2020s” we discuss Bob referencing how he “gay[ed] his way out of Vietnam” and the way Schmidt and his coworker treated Elizabeth. We also discuss Elizabeth standing up for herself and Jess owning her own decisions to her dad as our “Yes in the 2020s” moments. Additionally, we give a quick look into Curtis Armstrong (Dr. Foster) and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Peg), the Guest Stars we feature in this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Merritt Wever (Elizabeth - Previously discussed in S2E22), Satya Bhabha (Shivrang - Previously discussed in S2E18), Rob Reiner (Bob - Previously discussed in S2E8), Maureen Sebastian (Jill), Lewis Dauber (Old Sub), Adam Sauter (Riley - Elizabeth's date), Prem Shelat (Miguel), Karlin Walker (Student #1), Eshun Melvin (Student #2), Taylar Hollomon (Student #3), and Thomas Barbusca (Young Boy).We also share this article (which contains spoilers) where we learned that the creators knew that the audience wanted more Winston and made his birthday a C-plot as a joke. We also shared how the creators wanted to avoid an episode where Jess and Nick talked about their feelings after they had sex. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Flashcubes - When Bob is taking a picture of Jess and Nick, he mentions that he needs to get new flashcubes. These flashcubes were developed in the 1960s by Sylvania Electric Products which caused Kodak to replace the existing flashbulb technology on their series of cameras with flashcubes as the process of how they worked remained similar.Mark Twain - In this episode, Jess mentions bringing the words of Mark Twain alive when she was trying to teach the kids. Mark Twain is the pen name for Samuel Langhorne Clemens who was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was known for many famous novels like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This episode got an 8.5/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Nick and Kelly's favorite was Jess. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 25!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

He wanted his next project to be less a traditional rock band and more a chance to collaborate with all the musicians he admired, so he formed The Rentals. Even if he couldn't get his collaborators to leave his or her band permanently, Matt could rent them for enough time to make some music together. As you can imagine, after three full length albums, Matt Sharp has ended up being the only constant in The Rentals project. He assembles a new set of collaborators each time he records an album or goes on tour. Fun fact: actor Maya Rudolph, of Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids fame, also handled keyboard and backing vocals for the group's first tours in support of the debut album, Return of the Rentals. (Check out The Rentals 1996 video for "Waiting" to see Maya in action.) I hung out with Matt Sharp one nice afternoon in the alley behind Vancouver's now closed Electric Owl. Matt was in town to promote the newest Rentals record, Lost in Alphaville. The new record includes collaborations with Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, Ryen Slegr of Ozma, and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. Listen to this episode! You'll discover the answers to all these questions: Which Hollywood film director did Matt nearly get to make a video for The Rentals? How would Matt compare The Rentals with his old band Weezer? Which public figure would Matt want to work with--but he's too scared to send the email? Which Matt Sharp record does one of Matt's friends use to get his kids to sleep? You'll find out all this and more! Press play. The Happy Ending Music & Reading Series is celebrating a happy beginning. The series performance on June 8 at Joe’s Pub marked the launch of Happy Ending’s partnership with Yaddo, an artists’ working community based in Saratoga Springs, New York. Starting next fall, the series will produce three shows featuring entirely Yaddo-affiliated artists. Wednesday night, Suzanne Bocanegra and Kyle deCamp performed a collaborative visual and performance piece, and Amor Towles read from his new novel. Lucius, the musical guest and Happy Ending curator Amanda Stern’s self-proclaimed favorite band, took to the stage for two sets of tunes, gripping the audience with its haunting yet ethereal melodies. The band, fronted by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, cast a spell over the crowd, traversing scales with a soulful clarity and an underlying pain that colored even the band's more upbeat numbers. As they performed, Wolfe and Laessig faced one another across a set of keyboards, dressed in matching mod apparel from their floral get-ups to their ponytail poufs to their hybrid heels (one blue, one pink for each leading lady). Toying with a similar mirror effect, the performing artist Bocanegra presented a piece entitled “How to Paint” in collaboration with the visual artist de Camp. Through vivid imagery of painting as a means of expression, Bocanegra brought to life de Camp’s own coming of age experiences. On the screen behind her played an accompanying video in which pieces of mounted artwork were continuously layered on top of one another. Towles, a first-time novelist, also graced the stage to read excerpts from his novel "Rules of Civility." Passages from the book’s first chapter chronicled the late-night, big-city plans of 25 year-old Katey Kontent and her boardinghouse roommate, Eve. As the two women explored New York City in the late hours of the last night of 1937, Towles took his readers from a jazz club out onto the curbs of the city, meeting characters steeped in thoughts of gin and gentlemen, wit and winter, hardship and hope. The theme of “community” weaved its way throughout the night, accompanying tales of love and loss, friends and family, art and angst. Lucius’ whimsical harmony and Bocanegra’s search for an artistic identity traveled from the stage, dissipating through the performance space and culling an even greater sense of collaboration between the artists and the audience. But with all happy beginnings must come a happy ending. As the series commences its relationship with Yaddo, it also wrapped up its time at Joe’s Pub, which will be closed for renovations until October. Stern noted that it would be her first stretch of unoccupied time in seven years. In the spirit of community, she invited the audience to join her in “catching up," joking with the audience: “I’m going to go see The Gates, which I’m so excited about... I have to go back to Canal Jeans, a shirt from Fiorucci.... And if I have time I’m just going to run over to CBGB and see a couple of shows.” Bon Mots Suzanne Bocanegra performing "How to Paint": "I would look at the paintings. These are tragic paintings — paintings of obvious flatness making great depth. They gave a lot, they gave nothing. Some days, I would get lost in them, feel with them, and they were painful. They moved me. And on other days they didn’t move me at all." Amor Towles reading from "Rules of Civility": "In New York, it becomes so easy to assume that the city's most alluring women have flown in from Paris or Milan. But they're just a minority. A much larger covey hails from the stalwart states that begin with the letter 'I' like Iowa, Indiana, Illinois. Bred with just the right amount of fresh air, rough-housing and ignorance, these primitive blondes set out from the cornfields looking like starlight with limbs."
