Mary Murray is from a small Irish startup called JR Games that makes jigsaws dedicated to GAA counties. She came bearing a Kilkenny jigsaw for Bobby as the two chatted about the genesis of the business.
It's been four movies since the pompous “not-a-murderer” murderer, John Kramer, left this world worse than he found it. Yet, somehow we have more Jigsaws than ever! So, us Judys have our hands tied (up) with all the Jigsaw judging that needs to be done. This week is gonna be like pulling teeth or ripping out tongues as Andy and Philip laser cut our way through Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, Jigsaw, and Spiral: From the Book of Saw.
Saw is back baby! and Ruben is pleasantly surprised by how good this new chapter is. Tune in to hear Ruben's thoughts on Jigsaws new vendetta against pseudoscience medical grifters in this delightfully gorey new mouse trap. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ruben-ryan/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ruben-ryan/support

Massive jigsaws that traverse time and space, are the latest mind blowing creations from artist Zac Langdon-Pole. Almost 130-thousand pieces make up the jigsaws that combine the latest images from NASA's Hubble and James Webb Space telescopes, and 19th Century Romantic landscape paintings. Porous World is the name of the exhibition from an artist whose fascination with space also includes working with meteorite dust in his sculptures. Lynn Freeman asks Zac why he was so fascinated by the connection between the 19th Century "grand tours" and colonization, and today's exploration deeper and deeper into space. Zac Langdon-Pole's exhibition Porous World opens on Saturday October 15 at the Michael Lett Gallery in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland.
Today's Guest is AJ Jacobs, author of The Puzzler: One Max's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. For the last 25 years, writer A.J. Jacobs has attempted to live his life as a human guinea pig. “I've engaged in a series of experiments on my mind and body,” he says, “some of which have been fruitful, some humiliating failures. I've tried to understand the world by immersing myself in extraordinary circumstances.” His book “The Know-It-All” chronicled his experience reading the encyclopedia from cover to cover. To write “The Year of Living Biblically,” he followed every commandment in the Old Testament, including the edicts stone adulterers and avoid shaving the corners of your beard. Now A.J. is back with a new immersive memoir, “The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life.” --- Want to get smart, fast? In his new book, today's guest, A.J. For this Fourth of July, enjoy some of our favorite recent conversations: Justin Gest, associate professor of Policy and Government at George Mason University and the author of Majority Minority (Oxford University Press, 2022), talks about the demographic trends in the U.S. to 'majority minority' and puts efforts to resist it (like Pres. Trump's attempts to interfere with the 2020 Census) in context. Roosevelt Montás, senior lecturer in American Studies and English at Columbia University's Center for American Studies and director of its Freedom and Citizenship Programs, and author of Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation (Princeton University Press November 16, 2021), argues in favor of a collegiate core curriculum and talks about how the 'Great Books' influenced his life. Curtis Deutsch, professor of Geosciences and the High Meadows Environmental Institute at Princeton University, discusses the dire consequences of unchecked, human-driven emissions for ocean life as laid out in a new report he's co-authored, "Avoiding ocean mass extinction from climate warming." A. J. Jacobs, NPR contributor, contributing editor at Esquire, and the author of The Year of Living Biblically, The Know-It-All, It's All Relative and his latest The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life (Crown, 2022), talks about his new book that tries to puzzle out why we like puzzles and what they do for us. How much of life can be solved by algorithms, and how much just can't be solved? Listen as A.J. Jacobs, author of The Puzzler, talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the lessons he learned from solving every kind of puzzle imaginable, including the biggest stumper of all: what it really means to be a human being.
My guest is AJ jacobs A.J. Jacobs is an author, journalist, lecturer, and human guinea pig. His strategy as a writer is to dive into something he's curious about and actually live it. He has written ten books, four of which are New York Times bestsellers that combine memoir, science, humor, and a dash of self-help. His most recent book is The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. AJ is also editor-at-large at Esquire magazine, a commentator on NPR, and a columnist for Mental Floss magazine. He has appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, The Dr. Oz Show, Conan, and The Colbert Report. He has given several TED talks, including ones about living biblically, creating a one-world family, and living healthily. The viewership count of the two I saw was over 6M combined. On the podcast, I probe into his life experiments so we cover… How I came across his work in Esquire We cover some of his more notable experiments What he took away from reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in his quest to learn everything in the world. The hilarious problems with being radically honest What he learned from living the rules of the old testament for a year - in Manhattan He discusses which of his experiments was the most profound and life-changing We talk about why being grateful is hard and what he learned about gratitude from thanking over 1,000 people How we have the happiness equation backward, We talk about his latest book and the benefits of puzzles What mazes have to do with psychological flexibility I always strive for the meaningful on the show, but sometimes that can lean toward a bit of the somber - which is fine - but it is wonderful when you can get a guest like AJ who is breezy, funny, AND profound; hard to pull that off but he does it. I instantly liked him - I think you will too. Enjoy!
Puzzles may seem like fairly pedestrian pastimes — fun ways to while away a rainy afternoon. And while they certainly do make for satisfying diversions, my guest would say they're also more than that, and can teach us plenty about life as well. His name is A.J. Jacobs, and he's the author of The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. Today on the show, A.J. explains what makes a puzzle a puzzle, and why we're drawn to them and enjoy them so much. We then discuss the charm of certain puzzles, from crosswords and Rubik's Cubes, to jigsaws and mazes. Along the way, we discuss some of the strategies behind solving these puzzles, and how these strategies can help you become an all-around better thinker and decision maker, and better at navigating the puzzling dilemmas of life itself.Resources Related to the PodcastA.J.'s previous appearance on the podcast — Episode #53: Experimenting With Your LifeMaki Kaji — the father of SudokuAoM Article: The Best Riddles for KidsA.J.'s wife's scavenger hunt company, Watson AdventuresWordplayThe Great Vermont Corn MazeTanya Khovanova's Math BlogKryptos — art sculpture with encrypted code on the grounds of the CIAApopheniaSunday Firesides: Take It Bird by BirdConnect With A.J. Jess here. A.J. Jacobs has long been my inspiration for both writing and writerly mentorship, so I was thrilled when his forthcoming book, The Puzzler: One Man’s Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life landed on my doorstep. I adore A.J.’s work and this book might be a new favorite. We talk about the book, yes, but we also discuss where the ideas come from, how to stay curious and the effect that curiosity has on the writing, and the work of crafting proposals that resemble the final book. If you’ve been listening for a while, you know I spent five years as an editor with The New York Times—but I still had a lot to learn about helping writers through the process of taking a book from idea to manuscript, and I loved learning it with the Author Accelerator team. What they taught me has changed my approach to editing completely. I didn’t just learn how to help a writer move from one stage of the process to the next—I learned how to help them appreciate how far they’ve come and feel excited about what’s coming next, see their strengths and how they can build on them and trust me to guide them into the hard work that lies ahead. Puzzles have a long history and are loved by millions of people worldwide. The New York Times crossword alone attracts 20 million people daily. And puzzles come in multiple forms: jigsaws, mazes, manipulable objects like Rubik's Cubes, and even puzzles that require teams like escape rooms and scavenger hunts. Why do we love puzzles? Can they make us smarter? If so, how? Can they improve our mental or physical well-being? And might there even be a case for them making us better people? These and so many other questions will be answered by my most delightful guest, journalist, lecturer, and, my friend, New York Times best-selling author, AJ Jacobs (https://ajjacobs.com/)! AJ captured my attention nearly 20 years ago when I read his first major book, The Know-it-All, in which he put himself through one of his many self-imposed challenges. That time he read the entire 33,000-page Encyclopedia Britannica in one year and wrote about his insights. Subsequently, as a human guinea pig, he has put himself through many experiments including one in which he lived according to the rules of the bible outlined in The Year of Living Biblically. As a result of these experiments, he has become one of the most curious, open-minded, and creative thinkers I have ever met. What's more, he has the gift being able to write intellectually stimulating and simultaneously hilarious material! His latest book just dropped and is called The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. I absolutely loved it! In it, AJ went deep into more than a dozen different types of puzzles learning their history, and writing about the challenges and insights he encountered. AJ has been consistently lauded by literary critics, thought leaders, comedians, and people from all walks of life. Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, described her experience reading the book in words that resonated with me, saying “Even though I've never attempted the New York Times crossword puzzle or solved the Rubik's Cube, I couldn't put down The Puzzler.” This is AJ's second visit to the SuperPsyched podcast, and I am over-the-moon delighted to host him and for you, my listener, to be the beneficiary of this extraordinary man's heart and brain. So, listen in as AJ and I have a lively conversation about becoming smarter and, possibly, better people through puzzling. Get The Puzzler here: https://tinyurl.com/mt23vzar
A.J. Jacobs, The New York Times bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically, returns to the podcast to discuss his new book, The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life.
A.J. Jacobs believes that puzzles can save the world. The famously obscure 4-time New York Times best-selling author of books like The Know-It-All, Thanks a Thousand, and The Year of Living Biblically tells us what we can learn from them in his new book The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. We talked about some great life lessons A.J. gleaned from puzzles, including: Start with the end in mind Embrace the eraser (i.e. your first impression might not be accurate!), and most importantly, PAY ATTENTION, KNUCKLEHEAD! Join other readers in the quest to win A.J.'s $10,000 by clicking here.
AJ Jacobs stops by to talk about the psychology of puzzles and the nerdles who wordle. His new book is The Puzzler: One Man's Quest to Solve the Most Baffling Puzzles Ever, from Crosswords to Jigsaws to the Meaning of Life. Plus, a better way to think about Elon Musk buying Twitter than simply asking yourself: How much do I like Elon Musk? And Mike battles with a journalistic convention. Paul from Sp Filmviewers and I reluctantly let the ladies from our respective shows run wild for a festive chinwag about Kevin McCallister and his wacky Jigsaw origin story. Wanna play Fiona and Sophie's game? Happy Flogmas one & all! For the fans. Festive topics discussed during the episode include:Confusion rains down during the intro. We forget the 12 Days of Christmas Lyrics. I ask Fiona for help...Are we not doing 12 days of Flogmas? Paul & I make cameo appearances as it's all about us. Ben makes more than one...There's a really comfy corner in our bedroom perfect for rocking uncontrollably. The ladies discuss their Christmas shopping. Fiona and Sophie flex their respective Trivia muscles. Fiona makes me proud with her Joe Pesci pronunciation...It quickly turns sour. Was Peter McCaillaster fiddling drugs? Do Fiona and Sophie want to spend Christmas by themselves? Fiona admits she's a big kid. She comes across as very mature for her age—30 going on 5. Fiona and Sophie discuss the family's approach to counting kids. Not a lot of love for Uncle Frank? Who hasn't got a weird shouty handsy uncle at Christmas? Right? Right...? It's all part of the festive experience. We can all relate...Can't we? Hello?Where do I get my hands on a pair of these rubber feet? The ladies discuss who got the rawer end of Jigsaws games. So Fiona played Macaulay Culkin's stunt double? Who knew. What's Tom Cruise got to do with this? This Joe Pessey, whatever his name is, sounds alright. Is there too many M's in Macaulay? Too many N's in Culkin? While 8-year-old Kevin was torturing adults, 8-year-old Fiona was building and eating mudpies. Fiona talks about the big bastard who moved in during our Covid infested travels. Is Fiona scared of pigeons? Was it from watching watch Final Destination 2? Sophie talks about her yearly Christmas appointment with the stairs. What are your Christmas traditions? I would suggest dropping the presents and running Kris as Fiona will be waiting for you with a bottle of Baileys and two glasses. I have no idea what you like, Fiona. Sophie and Fiona round off their chat by talking about the seminal Christmas horror classic: Michael Keaton's Jack Frost. Fiona nails the marketing for our 12 Flog.
