“It just felt like I was sitting on a powder keg, just apply a little bit of sales and some operations and, and watching it grow.” -Jim Becker Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Jim Becker the driving force behind Creative Log and Lumber, a full-service urban lumber company located in Southeast Wisconsin. Jim's story is one of transformation, from a career in aerospace and hydraulics manufacturing to becoming a passionate advocate for sustainable woodworking and the preservation of urban trees.  Jim's journey began in the world of manufacturing, where he spent 12 years working primarily in aerospace and hydraulics component manufacturing. Although he excelled in this field, it wasn't his true passion. Then came a furlough from his company due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was the catalyst for change. Jim's journey into the world of urban lumber started with a simple kitchen renovation project during the pandemic. He stumbled upon Creative Log and Lumber while searching for a live-edge bartop or island top. Little did he know that this encounter would set the course for his future. Months later, when the furlough extended, Jim decided to reach out to Creative Log and Lumber to offer his assistance temporarily. What was meant to be a short-term gig turned into a two-and-a-half-year adventure of passion and learning in the urban lumber industry. Listen now and get the whole story! “My mom looked at me and said, Jim, your marketing is so bad that your family members don't even know it. And she was done. And she's always called it as she's seen it. So that was a wake up call just so that I felt like I talked about what I did and shared with people what I did.” -Jim Becker The Genesis of Creative Log and Lumber Creative Log and Lumber is a division of Creative Edge Landscapes, owned by Bob and Corrine Livingston. These visionary entrepreneurs saw the potential in salvaging high-quality urban logs that often ended up as low-quality landscaping products. In 2011, they purchased a sawmill, built a dehumidification kiln, and slowly built their lumber business piece by piece. Jim joined the company when it was on the cusp of exponential growth. With his manufacturing expertise, he applied lessons from his previous career to the lumber industry, implementing operational improvements and quality control standards. Becoming Visible: The Marketing Challenge One of the significant challenges Jim faced was the company's lack of visibility. Creative Log and Lumber was nestled in a small town in Wisconsin, and very few people knew about their existence. Even Jim's own family members were unaware of his involvement in the business. The wake-up call came during a family dinner when Jim's mother-in-law innocently revealed that they were buying a table from a local woodworker found on Facebook Marketplace. Jim's dismay at not being their first choice highlighted a severe marketing deficiency. Jim realized that to grow the business, he needed to overcome his aversion to social media and embrace it as a powerful tool for reaching potential customers. It was time to change the narrative and make Creative Log and Lumber a well-known entity in the market. “I know, there's like this mindset amongst the wood community. It's like, if you do good enough work, people will find you, i'm like No!!!” -Steve Larosiliere Want to get in touch with Jim Becker? If you watched ESPN's coverage of the FDNY/NYPD hockey game prior to the 20th anniversary of 9/11 you saw Mike faceoff against last week's guest FDNY goalie Kurt Pflumm in an exciting game.  It was fun talking to Mike and learning about his journey in hockey, and learning about his background with the police department. Listening to Mike I think we forget just how much police departments do in larger cities to keep us safe. It was also a lot of fun to hear his take on the FDNY/NYPD game from a few weeks ago, not to mention his thoughts of being run by my former college teammate Jim Becker of the FDNY. How are community and private foundations redirecting COVID funds for a brighter future in our communities? Philanthropy is increasing as Foundations and Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are called to distribute money now, rather than holding them in the “parking lot”. Legally, foundations are required to distribute 5% of their assets each year in grants to nonprofits. According to Market Watch, private foundations hold an estimated $1 trillion in assets and DAFs contain $120 billion. But the ultra-high net wealth individuals and foundations are advocating for distribution now. For example, the “Patriotic Millionaires” are advocating for the next stimulus package to ensure philanthropists distribute 10% money to charities while the country grapples with the pandemic. Also, to encourage people to give more freely in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the California couple David and Jennifer Risher created the #HalfMyDAF challenge which offers matching donations to donors who pledge to empty half of their donor-advised-fund account and direct that money to charity by September 30.Fundamentally, a foundation is an investment vehicle where dividends are distributed to charity. Benefits include strategic advice on giving, ability to aggregate funds overtime to support large initiatives and, of course, tax burden reduction. A community foundation’s mission is very general: to improve the quality of life in a given area. In this episode, we chat with Jim Becker, the President and CEO of the Richmond Community Foundation of California. Jim offers a thoughtful and holistic perspective on community needs as well as strategies for funding, not just in his region but nationally.Head to CreatingCommunityForGood.com for full show notes, key takeaways and episode resources. Seattle Rep theater presented a production of August Wilson's play Jitney this spring. Unfortunately, the run was just cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns.Wilson wrote a series of 10 plays about the African-American experience. Each is set in a specific decade of the twentieth century.Wilson won the Pulitzer Prize for Fences, set in 1950’s, and The Piano Lesson, set in the 1930’s.August Wilson had a connection to Seattle. He moved here in 1990 and finished the last half of his cycle here. He was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in 2005 and died that year at Swedish Hospital.Wilson is considered one of the great playwrights of the twentieth century, on par with Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller.Set in 1970’s Pittsburgh, Jitney is the story of a rideshare service run by Jim Becker. His business emerged in response to redlining practices. It is being forced to close due to gentrification.Redlining was devised by the federal government, theoretically to help banks in the wake of the Great Depression. The practice, steeped in racism, was embraced by local governments. The story of Jitney resonates for us in Seattle, a place which, like cities around the country, is still grappling with the legacy of targeted discrimination and disenfranchisement. In a collaboration with Seattle Rep, we invited a number of local leaders to join a discussion on the history and legacy of redlining and gentrification. We hope that through this discussion, framed by personal experience and the lens of the play, we can reflect on what we want for our city in the coming decades. This recording took place on March 8 in the KUOW studios. KUOW’s Zaki Hamid spoke with Diane Sugimura, former director of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development; Inye Wokoma, co-founder of Wa Na Wari, the center for Black art, stories and social connection in the Central District; and Vivian Phillips, a communications and arts advocacy consultant and a member of KUOW’s board of directors.Excerpts from Jitney were read by Ronnie Hill, Brandon Jones Mooney, Malcolm J West and Alex Lee Reed. Please note: This recording contains an unedited racial slur.

In today’s episode, we speak with Jim Becker, CEO & Founder of Becker Logistics.  How would you like these results?  In 2018 we were doing around 4,000 shipments per month, and now we are doing around 6,000 per month. And all of that, I want to say, is due to all of the marketing that I, and my team, have done over the last two quarters.  This podcast dives deep into how Becker Logistics drove their business to such incredible heights, and how those lessons can applied to your business.  If you are in the transportation industry, there is a great chance that you know who Jim Becker is. If you aren’t in that industry, its fine as the insights and learnings that Jim shares, relate to any business and industry. Becker Logistics has been around for over 22 years and has about 170 employees, however, they have hired over 70 just this year and are experiencing hockey stick like growth. You will also hear straight from Jim about how much of their success he attributes to modern marketing. In today’s episode Jim talks about their overall marketing strategy, and gives specifics on their '31 and 1' campaign, where they released a video a day in May on LinkedIn that generated over 150k views … so far! Here is a quick example of one of Becker Logistics' '31 in 1' videos:  What do we like about these videos?  1. They were consistent.  2. They were NOT salesy or self-promotional.  3. They were unique and spoke to the Becker brand essence.  4. They were real and unscripted. Obviously, Jim had a plan but there was no telepromter in sight, and he said they did 15 of the videos in one take, which is pretty impressive.  5. They were focused on education and providing value above all else.  SPECIAL NOTE:  If you are a leader or business owner that thinks: ‘Who cares about social media? Who cares if we got 1,000 more followers on LinkedIn? Or, we have been successful for many years without a marketing team and strategy, so why now? ... then Jim, has some thoughts specifically for you! While many companies ignore the modern world, don’t respond to online reviews, and play no role in how their brand is talked about online, Jim and Becker Logistics are lighting the modern marketing world on fire and reaping the rewards for doing so!   Welcome to the April edition of the Aquarium Drunkard podcast, coming in from West of the Rockies. On this program, we explore the late night radio theater of the late Art Bell. The Coast to Coast AM host passed away on Friday, April 13th, and we’ve spent the days since exploring his classic archives. Aquarium Drunkard founder Justin Gage and co-host Jason P. Woodbury sat down to reflect on Bell’s singular voice, dedication to chronicling the unknown, and status as a purveyor of genuine American weirdness. Also on the show, guitarist Nels Cline joins us to discuss his new quartet, the Nels Cline 4, and “Imperfect 10” from the combo’s new Blue Note Records LP, Currents, Constellations. Maybe you know his playing with Wilco, but here he focuses on the notion of “jazz fusion,” which he’s been exploring since the late ‘80s. And we begin the podcast with a discussion with Jaime Fennelly of Mind Over Mirrors. The synthesist and composer just released a masterpiece called Bellowing Sun. It’s cosmic in scope but rooted in the earthy reflections of naturalist writers like Henry Beston, whose 1928 book, The Outermost House: A Year of Life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod, served as a guidepost for the new album. Earlier this month, the album debuted alongside a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring a light sculpture modeled after an enormous drum. The suggestions — of biorhythms and universal patterns — are in keeping with Mind Over Mirrors’ space-folk. Though Mind Over Mirrors began as a solo project, it’s very much a group effort now, featuring Janet Bean of Freakwater and Eleventh Dream Day, Jon Mueller of Volcano Choir, and Jim Becker of Califone. The band’s latest, Bellowing Sun, arrives in conjunction with a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring an ambitious light sculpture. One of the marvelous things about Mind Over Mirrors is the way the group’s music feels both spacey and earthy. On the new album, which is at turns ecstatic, spooky, and revelatory, Fennelly and company the band maximize that ability, putting the idea of our planet as a cosmic vehicle into context. “I think about [the cosmos] in relation to my own music as being otherworldly, but I also think of it as being grounded, in the way that the Earth is cosmic,” Fennelly says. “It’s not just about the area beyond us or outside of us, in kind of an exploratory sense as well.” On his new album with the Nels Cline 4, Currents, Constellations, guitarist and composer Nels Cline reigns in the conceptual mood music of his previous Blue Note Records release, Lovers, in favor of tight, spiky interplay with guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Tom Rainey. It’s a record fueled by Cline’s energy, incorporating avant-garde, rock, and blues influences. It is, for lack of a better term, jazz fusion music, which explains why Cline’s initial title for “Imperfect 10” was “Jazz Fusion Composition.” “I definitely chose that term to bother people, particularly people who think they’re cooler than ‘jazz fusion,'” Cline says. “Basically, it’s a meaningless term. It’s a combination of basically whatever. It doesn’t have to mean a combination of jazz and rock and classical and funk…it doesn’t mean the same thing from one person to another, and that’s why it’s a fun word to use. It’s basically a meaningless word that bothers people, which I find linguistically fascinating, but it also, stylistically, does kind of define me.” If you’ve ever been the sort of person content to sit around the radio late at night or scan the airwaves on a long drive through the middle of nowhere, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the strange radio theater of Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM. Since Bell passed away earlier this month and since his passing, we’ve been tuned into his archives. Here, we reflect on the impact and legacy of Bell’s pioneering program. “Coast to Coast AM felt like this secret handshake between people,” AD’s Justin Gage says. “Not unlike when you find a record or something that means a lot to you, that might be a little esoteric or obscure. Coast to Coast AM definitely kind of felt like that in the late ’90s, early 2000s.” Thanks for listening to the Transmissions podcast.
