Filly is joined by Jo Whitton from Quirky Cooking on today's podcast episode. Such a great convo! Filly has been cooking along with Jo ever since Filly started her own healing journey back in 2013. So it was a true pleasure to meet Jo in person and pick her brains about her “Quirky Cooking” journey. About Jo Whitton Jo Whitton lives in Far North Queensland where she runs her business, Quirky Cooking, from home and enjoys the country life. Due to food intolerances in her family (herself and her four children), Jo began researching ways to improve their health through diet from the time her kids were very young. In 2008 she began a blog, Quirky Cooking, to share what she was learning and the recipes she was developing for her family. In 2014, Jo's son Isaac was diagnosed with severe OCD and anxiety, which resulted in a deep dive into gut health and food as medicine. Not only did Isaac's mental health stabilise, but her whole family saw massive improvements in their overall health. Jo has since helped thousands of families to heal with food, sharing the principles she used to heal her own family. Jo runs health seminars, cooking workshops, retreats and other events both in Australia and overseas, sharing how to transition to a healing, whole food diet in a doable and sustainable way. She also shares podcasts and videos and facilitates gut health programs to support people working through healing with food, regularly develops new recipes for her audience, and shares daily cooking videos from her kitchen on social media. Jo is the author of three best-selling cookbooks: “Quirky Cooking”, “Life-Changing Food” and “Simple Healing Food”. In today's episode, Jo Whitton talks to Filly about: Jo shares how she was struggling with her own “body burnout”, taking us right back to when she was young, when she struggled with putting on weight, being sick all the time, food intolerances, histamine issues, and then later on hormonal imbalances & fatigue. Things got worse after Jo had kids and she was juggling all the things. After connecting many of her health issues to food intolerances, Jo tried seeking help from doctors and dieticians, but found their advice around food wasn't helpful. Eventually she saw a naturopath and chiropractor who introduces her to wholefood eating and healing foods, and her Quirky Cooking journey began! Jo shares how her Quirky Cooking business evolved, from starting a blog with recipes and meal plans, and connecting with others struggling with food intolerances and health issues, to writing her first cookbook and evolving her business to what it is now. Jo's health improved with her change of diet, but she had a feeling that she was still only “managing” underlying health issues. In 2014, her son Isaac developed severe anxiety and OCD, which led to a deeper dive into the GAPs diet and gut health. Jo shares what this looked like for Isaac and the whole family, and the incredible healing that came from addressing gut health (Isaac went from severe OCD, anxiety and paranoia, to returning back to a “normal kid” within weeks!). Filly and Jo chat about deeper root-causes of Jo's food intolerances and poor gut health. Jo talks about her genetic mutation that makes it harder for her body to detoxify, as well as early chronic exposure to mould and farming pesticides. They also dig into Jo's inner patterns of emotional sensitivity as a kid, body image as a teenage and adult, and over-doing and people pleasing tendencies as a younger mother and business owner. Jo shares how she has navigated this side of her healing journey, to now being a healthy, confident and more balanced 50 year old (beautiful!) woman. We dive into Jo's 8-Week Gut Health Program that is helping so many people heal their guts with wholefoods and healthy living, as well as creating a supportive and nourishing space to reconnect back to healing foods and connecting. She also talks about her upcoming health retreats in Italy and Far North QLD. Filly hand-picked three listener's questions for Jo, and we finish off the convo with Jo answering the questions: “Do you ever get sick of cooking?? What do you do to give yourself a break from it occasionally? Or do you just enjoy it so much that you never stop?!” ~ Sarah Scrimegeur “Do you have any tricks to get my 7yo to try food that isn't pasta or rice? If so you are my new hero” ~ Andrew Wheatley “Time poor, mum with special needs kids. What first steps I should take to help my exhausted body?” ~ @Natural.learning.life A very big thank you again to the super inspiring and big-hearted Jo for coming on the Ending Body Burnout Show! Are you curious about education options for your children? Or perhaps you're looking for gut health inspiration for you and your loved ones? This is an episode just for you. As my daughters 5 year old birthday approaches, I can feel the pressure of our schooling decisions for her getting building up. We've always had a Steiner school as our preference for our daughter, however our move to the country wasn't quite close enough to pursue this choice. I'm now leaning towards homeschooling, but understand this is a massive commitment but also comes with a whole lot of beautiful bonuses. Amelia is excited by the thought of our days on the farm, learning through play and life skills and yes, amongst interaction with out-of-the-home activities and sports... but we're still working on hubby. I just love hearing other Mumma's experiences and today I explore homeschooling from a Mumma of four and gut healing cookbook queen herself, Jo Whitton. Jo Whitton lives in Far North Queensland where she runs her business, Quirky Cooking, from home and enjoys the country life. Due to food intolerances in her family (herself and her four children), Jo began researching ways to improve their health through diet from the time her kids were very young. Jo is the author of three best-selling cookbooks: “Quirky Cooking”, “Life-Changing Food” and “Simple Healing Food”.   In this episode we explore: An introduction into Jo's family, their personal health challenges that lead them to embark their healing journey. The GAPS diet and their incredible gut healing experience. How and when they were able to reintroduce dairy into their diet, without reactions. What a typical day of meals looked like on the intro and full GAPS phases and some tips for navigating this with a family.  What meals look like now they are not following the full GAPS diet and what foods are still potential triggers for them.   When and why Jo began educating her children from home. What their days looked like while home schooling The homeschooling approach Jo took. How she found the balance between work life and mum life as a home schooling Mum. Most rewarding moments educating your children from home. How her children have transitioned into work after home schooling. Plus more! As Dr Natasha Cambell Mcbride states "In healthy gut flora, a digestive disorder cannot develop." So have I got your attention?   If you're going around in circles with your health, feel like you've tried all the things for either small niggly symptoms or major signs of disturbed health and just stuck with where to from here, coming back to your gut health is likely where you need to turn. Yes, your gut microbiome and gut integrity is at the core of your overall health and wellbeing. When it comes to supporting all aspects of gut healing, the GAPS diet is one that deserves more air time. It does overwhelm most at the initial thought of it (me included), but if you're committed to allowing the healing to occur and supporting all areas of your health, particularly the way you function and feel mentally, this is a game changer. Cue one of Australia's top 'GAPS Diet' practitioners, Elyse Comerford. Elyse Comerford, founder of Well Belly Health Clinic, is an Integrative Nutritionist and Certified GAPS (Gut & Psychology/Physiology Syndrome) Practitioner, Keynote Speaker, Mentor, and most importantly, Mum to Dylan. What We Cover: An insight into Elyse's personal health journey and what lead her to do the work she does to support people through the GAPS diet. What the GAPS diet is, how it began and how it is different to other gut healing diets (such as low FODMAP for SIBO). The stages of a GAPS diet- difference between intro and full GAPS and when you know when you are ready to change from one stage to the next.  When you should consider following a GAPS diet. When not to follow the GAPS diet and Elyse's thoughts around GAPS during pregnancy, breastfeeding, babies and young children. The contributing factors for dark circles under eyes in children and her approach to supporting their health.  Why parasite cleansing is not supportive for your gut health. How to overcome bowel movement changes during the GAPS diet- bth loose bowels and constipation.  What is going wrong with conventional baby food introductions and how to set babies up from the beginning for healthy gut health through foods.  Personally why and what healing Elyse notices when she follows GAPS intro.  Tips for kids birthday parties- how to navigate for a healthy gut in children.  Plus more! Oliver (Olly) James is a World Barista Competition Judge (and founder of the Tattooed Sailor Coffee Roasters) and is a keen supporter of local, indigenous produce and direct farm-sourced ingredients. Recently he was invited to help showcase the *Bush Beef from Normanby Station and help to get this uniquely flavoursome, sustainable meat out to the market. Jo and Olly discuss subjects ranging from the amazing variety of produce grown in Far North Queensland, locally-grown coffee and wild 'bush beef', to vanilla, seasonal cooking and how a trip to Ethiopia opened Olly's eyes to a wider definition of local food. Olly started making coffee at 9 years old in his Father's NSW countryside, garden-to-plate restaurant. In 2009 he opened his first cafe, Caffiend in Cairns CBD. Since then, Olly has opened several cafe venues, and currently operates Caffiend, Guyala Cafe, Newell Street Cafe, Tattooed Sailor Coffee Roasters, Cairns Coffee School and his hospitality consulting business. Visit the website: https://www.quirkycooking.com.au/ Watch this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/GWSZdNPimOg About this podcast: "Awareness and knowing ‘the reason why' is the first step to behaviour change!" In this podcast, Jo talks about how you can reach your health goals by building skills and knowledge into your life, one tiny habit at a time. [This podcast is excerpted from one of the lessons in The Gut Health Formula Program, run by Elyse Comerford and Jo Whitton] Jo says, "You may be feeling motivated and eager to make some big health changes as soon as possible, but be careful about changing too many things too quickly! (I know, that's not usually what you hear when you do a program or cleanse or some kind of protocol for health!!) We recommend that BEFORE you jump in and start making any changes, first observe where you are at right now, and think about the direction you want to go and your goals for your health. Motivation alone will not create lasting changes in your everyday habits - you're not going to feel motivated every day. Building good habits by consistently working on small steps is a much more sustainable approach." My podcast has been hijacked!!! In this Episode, Farm Owners Academy's Farm Business Coach, David Westbrook, takes the reins and interviews an extraordinary woman making a big, big difference in the lives of thousands of families.   Back in 2016, David experienced a life-changing lesson.   That lesson?   ‘Humans sacrifice their health in order to make money. Then they sacrifice money to recuperate their health.' - Dalai Lama   Through the curiosity of this lesson, David & his wife Becky went searching for mentors to improve their health. That's when they came across Jo Whitton.   Jo is best known for helping people journey to good health through healing foods and ‘food as medicine'. She has over 270,000 Facebook followers and uses her social media platforms along with her cookbooks and retreats to educate people to a better way of living using a healing, whole food diet without the overwhelm.   In this episode, you will learn how you can change your life through some simple lessons. This is a game-changer where David & Jo explore…   their personal stories and how Gut Health has impacted them; how to get started with gut-healing foods; what is the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) diet; how you can take steps towards a better way of living; and why fad diets have confused us all. We hope this podcast will impact you and help you make meaningful and lasting changes in your and your families health, just as these lessons have for the Westbrook family.   Here's to good, wholesome health. Episode 19: Featuring Jo Whitton from Quirky Cooking.     http://thewellnesscouch.com/category/aqj   http://www.quirkycooking.com.au/about/   http://unleashyourgeneius.com/   You must listen to this episode if you are a Mom or Dad, or anyone healing from gut issues.   Most of your health will come from the foods you eat. The nutrients that you provide your body by way of ingesting the essential nutrients our body requires in order to operate properly and express optimal health.   You are genetically designed to express this health status, and isn’t supposed to be hard either. In fact, it is quite easy.   Every one of us has the blueprint on our DNA to be strong like the hunter and gatherers were for 2 million years.   Too many toxins and not enough essential nutrients create an environment that provides our genes and our DNA the worst building blocks, and won’t allow the body to function at its optimal level. This leads to sickness and disease.   Peak performance, optimal health, and just simply living a healthy life requires peak provisions of essential nutrients. Nutrients that are from the most natural sources possible. The fewer middlemen between the earth and your plate the better.   Put simply, just eat real foods, mostly plants, healthy meats from healthy sources, seafood, nuts, seeds, and fruits. Pretty easy!   If all of this sounds too hard, just have a listen to Jo’s “Tough Love”. It will give you the kick you need to get what you want from your health, and the health of your family.   Jo Whitton provides us with the tools, knowledge, and strategies to provide ourselves health care from the kitchen. And she does it in the kindest, most generous of ways. You can feel her sincerity and loveliness in her voice. No wonder her podcast is doing so well!   If you can find a way to make cooking simpler and less stressful it will be a valuable skill to use for the rest of your life.   I am so lucky to have Jo on the show today to give us her personal story of how she helped with her sons’ gut issues and heal from a severe case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.   Enjoy,   Dr Brian   Guest:   Jo Whitton, from Quirky cooking:   http://thewellnesscouch.com/category/aqj   http://www.quirkycooking.com.au/about/   http://unleashyourgeneius.com/
