    Did you know that Lindt & Sprüngli, the renowned Swiss chocolatier, is currently facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States concerning allegations of elevated levels of heavy metals lead and cadmium in its dark chocolate products. The lawsuit, initiated in February 2022 was spurred by a 2022 Consumer Reports investigation that tested 28 dark chocolate bars sold in the U.S., revealing that certain Lindt products (including 70% and 85% cacao bars) contained higher-than-acceptable levels of these heavy metals! So today, I'm going to dive into lead, the sources (including chocolate), impacts of exposure and what we can do to both prevent high lead exposure and detox our bodies daily, from inevitable sources.     I used to have insomnia. When I first moved to Adelaide (from Kangaroo Island), the fast paced and noisy big smoke put me in a state of frazzle. I'd tried every trick and herb in the book, but I still wouldn't go to sleep until I was utterly exhausted. When I started studying, I put this and many of my other symptoms down to 'adrenal stress' and then I was convinced I developed a state of 'adrenal fatigue'. Well that's what testing showed too. But the functional medicine community was missing parts of the puzzle when it came to stress and the adrenal glands and how this impacts your health.  & yes, this stress response I'm talking about governs the health of your energy, moods, skin, sleep, cycles, weight & more.     Breastfeeding experiences for one Mumma can be completely different from another. It can also be an emotional roller coaster, especially when mixed with broken Mumma sleep.  There can be frustration, pain, exhaustion, overwhelm, heartbreak, but also an abundance of love & oxytoxin experienced throughout a mothers breastfeeding journey. Geez, some days you may experience all of the above! When it comes to nursing, like all areas of motherhood there are different techniques, challenges... and even more opinions.  Gaining support from a qualified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is something I will always recommend, but I have to admit I also personally adore listening to the experience of other Mums. I take what resonates and go with my gut. Common breastfeeding challenges amongst Mums include supply issues (over and under) and many will experience some degree of mastitis. So when guidelines change, as they have recently with the way the Academy Of Breastfeeding view and treat mastitis, I like to explore the why behind it.       I was ironically pressing send on this post, explaining about how we'd lead a healthy lifestyle while on our most recent trip to far North Queensland. That's when it started to creep over me. The headache started pulsing behind my left eye, my body began to ache and my bed was calling me louder and louder. Despite the warmth under the blankets, my teeth were also chattering loudly. I was down and out. It took me a couple of days of being bed bound before I mustered up the strength to clear my mind and work out a plan of attack with my herbs, nutrients, probiotics and oils on hand. Whether it's you or your little loves suffering with a sickness, when you're in the midst of it all, its no easy task trying to strategise a medicine routine.  So that's why I wanted to open up a conversation about important topics when it comes to children's health- croup, ear infections and avoiding antibiotics.     Are you pooing properly? I know, personal question. But as a Naturopath, toilet talk is a regular topic of discussion. As my daughters 5 year old birthday approaches, I can feel the pressure of our schooling decisions for her getting building up. We've always had a Steiner school as our preference for our daughter, however our move to the country wasn't quite close enough to pursue this choice. I'm now leaning towards homeschooling, but understand this is a massive commitment but also comes with a whole lot of beautiful bonuses. Amelia is excited by the thought of our days on the farm, learning through play and life skills and yes, amongst interaction with out-of-the-home activities and sports... but we're still working on hubby. I just love hearing other Mumma's experiences and today I explore homeschooling from a Mumma of four and gut healing cookbook queen herself, Jo Whitton. Jo Whitton lives in Far North Queensland where she runs her business, Quirky Cooking, from home and enjoys the country life. Due to food intolerances in her family (herself and her four children), Jo began researching ways to improve their health through diet from the time her kids were very young. In 2008 she began a blog,  Quirky Cooking, to share what she was learning and the recipes she was developing for her family. In 2014, Jo's son Isaac was diagnosed with severe OCD and anxiety, which resulted in a deep dive into gut health and food as medicine. Not only did Isaac's mental health stabilise, but her whole family saw massive improvements in their health. Jo has since helped thousands of families to heal with food, sharing the principles she used to heal her own family.   Jo runs health seminars, cooking workshops, retreats and other events both in Australia and overseas, sharing how to transition to a healing, whole food diet in a doable and sustainable way.     I don't drink milk, but I'm thinking of getting a milking cow for our little farm. Crazy right? But when I say I don't drink milk, that's the pasteurised version of cows milk. The raw, enzyme rich, fresh milk from our own cow will be something else. Oh and I'll be lining up for the cream too- delicious homemade butter on tap! I also think it will be so wholesome for my girls to grow up taking care of, helping to milk and of course, benefiting nutritionally from having our own family milking cow.     Reversing Thyroid Autoimmunity Naturally ~ with Dr Miranda Myles

    If you're like most patients who come to me with their 'hormone health' blood work up they had with their GP, you have been told that your thyroid health was normal and often unfortunately dismissed. Something is often missing however- a test for thyroid antibody levels to check for autoimmunity activity.  If you have had your levels checked and they are 'in range',  heightened above the 'normal', or your health care provider hasn't checked this off yet, you'll want to pull up a seat and listen in.     Restorative Reproductive Medicine ~ with Dr Cathy Peterson

    When it comes to baby making, the events of conception that occur within the body never cease to amaze me.  There are many hormones at play to do their intricate dance, follicles to ripen and mature, sperm to show up fighting fit and ready to meet the healthy egg, follicular tubes to be clear, the presence of nurturing cervical mucus and a plump nutrient rich endometrium, ready for the implanted fertilised egg to flourish. It truely is magical. Because of the intricacies involved, natural conception often doesn't happen as soon as first hoped. Fear can often get in the way and terms like "unexplained infertility" are quickly thrown around by healthcare providers.  While I understand there are times when it is needed to bring a baby into your world, what I encourage as a Naturopath is to ensure my patients gain holistic health care, so the multiple areas of fertility are addressed holistically before rushing into assisted reproductive procedures, such as IVF. To help unpack this for you today, I have a detailed chat to share with you with Dr Cathy Peterson.  Dr Catherine Peterson is a GP with a special interest in restorative reproductive medicine (RRM). She uses RRM to manage many conditions including infertility (both male and female factors), pregnancies at risk of miscarriage, irregular periods, PCOS, abnormal menstrual bleeding, and PMS.   Restorative reproductive medicine looks for underlying causes and treats those causes to achieve reproductive health and hormonal balance. She uses her knowledge from her NaProTECHNOLOGY TM training, and multiple FEMM TM Medical Management training courses.   She can assist women wanting fertility education to avoid pregnancy and also offers obstetric shared care.    WHAT WE COVER  What is NaPro Techonology and restorative reproductive medicine and why should this be an avenue that you consider before other assisted fertility options such as IVF. Common contributors for fertility challenges that are often overlooked and how are they impacting a healthy conception.
