Welcome to another enlightening episode of the Step It Up Entrepreneur podcast! I'm your host, Tomas Keenan, and today, we're diving into a conversation that's as deep as it is diverse. Joining us from the stunning landscapes of British Columbia is Joel Primus—a man whose journey through the realms of athletics, spirituality, and business has been nothing short of extraordinary. In this episode, we start by tracing the evolution of the Step It Up Entrepreneur podcast and the rigorous process I follow to bring you guests who truly embody the spirit of stepping up. Joel Primus fits that mold perfectly. From conquering ultra-marathons to pioneering a successful underwear company, Joel's path is a testament to the power of embracing discomfort and overcoming life's many challenges. We then delve into the concept of "good suffering," as introduced by Joel, and how seeking discomfort can lead to personal growth and mental fortitude. This contrasts sharply with "bad suffering," which encompasses chronic stress and fear. Through our conversation, we explore the societal trend towards comfort and how modern conveniences may be eroding our resilience. Finally, Joel shares his entrepreneurial journey—how he accidentally found himself in the underwear business, raised significant capital, and took his company public. Yet, despite his professional triumphs, true fulfillment came only when he turned inward, focusing on personal growth and being present with his family. So, sit back, relax, and get ready to dive deep into this rich conversation. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a seeker of personal growth, or someone navigating the complexities of life, there's something in this episode for you. Let's step it up together and embrace the journey of growth, transformation, and true fulfillment. Find more about Joel https://joelprimus.com https://www.nakedrevival.com or his socials! How do you build a business you love and feel on purpose without driving yourself to burnout? Joel Primus, award winning documentary film-maker and author of Getting Naked: the Bare Necessities of Entrepreneurship, believes that stripping back is the key to fulfillment in our success-driven culture. Joel grew up loving long distance running. As an elite athlete, he represented Canada at the World Youth Games. It was his goal to be the best. To take on other athletes around the world and come out on top every time, but with goals like these comes massive amounts of pressure and self-expectation.This pressure was crippling for Joel, and eventually led to losing himself and being unable to compete. Fortunately, these lessons stuck with him when he shifted his focus towards entrepreneurship. Joel believes that “Entrepreneurship is the journey to self discovery to help us create the opportunities that allow us to find the points of entry into our pain, to release our pain, so we can truly be happy.”Today, Joel is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, former elite marathon runner, the founder of a premium underwear brand, “Naked,” and the founder of Kosan Travel, one of the most successful Kickstarter apparel products of all time. In this episode of Rock Your Money, Rock Your Life, Joel and I discuss the bare necessities of entrepreneurship, how his love for running led him down a slippery slope, and why personal growth is the key to building a business you love.

Today our expert guest is Joel Primus, the founder of and creative visionary behind Naked Boxer Brief. The pitch was simple — underwear so comfortable you can't even feel them — but a lot of people saw it as a risky bet. Mr. Wonderful, one of the hosts of “Dragon's Den,” the Canadian equivalent of “Shark Tank,” called Joel delusional. Now, fast forward 10 years: Joel helped raise more than $17M dollars in funding, established retail distribution with huge global partners, and lead a merger with Australian-based industry powerhouse Bendon before exiting in 2018. His most recent company is Kosan Travel, a clothing company that launched one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns for an apparel product, reaching nearly $1M in sales in 30 days. Part memoir and part entrepreneurial start-up manual, “Getting Naked: The Bare Necessities of Entrepreneurship and Start-ups” wants to take you through the process of scaling the business, building a team, raising money, and even when a founder needs to consider stepping down as CEO — and, at the same time, the book is going to ask questions that challenge you to interrogate yourself and your dream. One of the big problems for a lot of entrepreneurs is that they don't know what questions to ask — they don't know what they don't know — and Joel hopes this book can help guide people to asking better questions so that they can start getting better answers, the answers that Joel wishes he had when he was starting this business from his apartment 12 years ago. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “If we don't pick up the boulder in our lives all the time — that big, heavy, immovable object — then we don't have to carry it. And to try to make sense of that, I looked at my life like what are the boulders in my life that I'm carrying that I don't have to? That I'm trying to move that I don't have to? These things that are completely strenuous, crushing me... what if I just didn't pick it up?” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. What you are entitled to in your process as an entrepreneur is your attitude and your work, your work ethic, your effort. When you focus on your attitude are you going to bring that whole, that positivity, that presence to what you are doing and just always be the person that brings that glass half full energy and the work ethic that needs to come behind that.
