Now that we are headed  towards the darkest time of the year, I wanted to record a special episode and have a open and honest discussion about mental health. Today's interview is with Joseph Fusaro, writer and mental health advocate. Joseph started struggling with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and ADD from the time he was a teenager. After years of trying to manage his mental health with drug abuse and institutions , Joseph went into a deep psychosis in his late 20's. What he didn't know at the time, was that this breakdown would eventually lead him towards a path of recovery. Joseph has spoken all over the US about mental health awareness and suicide prevention with organizations such as, NAMI (national alliance on mental Illness), This is my brave, and JCK foundation in West Chester NY. Joseph openly discusses his story and has helped him get to where he is today.              National suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255

My guest is writer, podcast host, and mental health advocate Joseph Fusaro, who talks to me about how he got labelled at a young age, and how he got himself past it. THE HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST is a frank conversation between Loretta Breuning and a real reader of her book, Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels. Read the book and send your questions to Dr. Breuning on the contact form at the Inner Mammal Institute at: InnerMammalInstitute.org. You may be a guest on the show yourself! The brain chemicals that make us feel good are inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. It's not easy, alas. Our brain is designed to release happy chemicals when you take steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them— a lot!The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's manyt books illuminate the big picture and help you plot your course. You can feel good in new ways, no matter where you are right now. Today’s podcast is among our favorites! We interview Joseph Fusaro for a genuine and transparent discussion on isolation. Often times, when we struggle with mental health issues, we tend to withdraw from friends and loved ones...at the very moment we need them most. Joe’s journey is real, gritty, complex and ultimately, inspiring. Joe describes the dark spiral his life took as a college student with undiagnosed schizoaffective, bipolar, general anxiety disorder, chemical dependence, depression, insomnia and agoraphobia that sent him to several psychiatric hospitalizations. After several years of loneliness and self imposed isolation, Joe ultimately found a path to healing and in the process, mended relationships with those who welcomed him back with open arms. Joe is an editor with the Mental Health News Radio Network and host of Hysteria Radio, a podcast and internet radio show that focuses on writing, music, expressive arts, and all things related to self-care and recovery from or management of a mental health condition. Joe has published 6 poetry books and a short guide featuring the changes he made to start feeling alive again after living his teen years and 20’s with serious mental illness. He is also a professional speaker and works with NAMI, This Is My Brave, Project 375, and Deconstructing Stigma.

My Counterpane evolved from the experience of Kate Milliken, who was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2006.A video producer by trade, Kate produced a series of videos to showcase her first year with MS and launched them in 2009 on Katescounterpane.com. A counterpane is a patchwork quilt created from a variety of fabrics which, when sewn together, create warmth and beauty as a whole. Her emotional honesty struck a chord and the project gained wide viewership in the MS community, especially among the newly diagnosed. What became clear to Kate through her own experience was that people need a way to connect each other not only via sharing the daily experience of illness (the clinical), but by sharing the emotions behind the illness (the psychological). Mycounterpane.com started with MS, but as the site gained traction, other communities were born. Our aim is to be the experiential version of a counterpane patchwork quilt: a community that celebrates the virtual, remembers the real, and ultimately, counters pain with the knowledge of who we are, what we know, and how we feel.Joseph Fusaro joins us as co-host.
