Jacob Hess, Carrie Skarda, Kyle Anderson, and Ty Mansfield are the authors of The Power of Stillness: Mindful Living for Latter-day Saints. In this interview they discuss where mindfulness and meditation fit into the gospel and how we can better approach our service and our practices with the balance of mindfulness. Jacob Hess, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) instructor trained through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Carrie Skarda, PsyD, is a psychologist in private practice. She has provided individual and couples therapy with particular interest in attachment trauma and mindfulness, and has studied and practiced mindfulness and formal meditation for over ten years. Kyle Anderson, PhD, is a professor of Chinese and Asian Studies, currently an administrator in Global Learning, International Partnerships and Initiatives at Clemson University, and came to mindfulness meditation through his studies in Asian literature. Lewis (in Mere Christianity): “It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind.”

So we've talked about mindfulness on this show before, and if you're in my Differently Wired Club, you know that mindfulness meditation is something I explore from time to time but really struggle with implementing in the way I think I'm supposed to. Like, I always feel like I'm doing it wrong or it's just not for me. But as my guest today, Hunter Clarke-Fields, explains, there are many accessible ways to practice mindfulness, even for people like me who feel like they can't, or don't want to, slow down. And there's just no disputing the powerful way that mindfulness can support us in helping us be more present, more grounded, more calm, more open, and more curious when navigating all the big, challenging stuff with our neurodivergent kids. During our conversation, Hunter demonstrates a few mindful techniques to regulate yourself when you need it that are very doable even if you only have 3 minutes — I've actually been doing them since we recorded this, and I'm still at it! Hunter also shared strategies to show our kids compassion when they are struggling and introduces us to what has become one of my most favorite positive self-talk phrases — “permission to be human” — as a reminder when we have less than brilliant parenting, or life, moments. In this podcast we will be chatting with EWP PhD student Reise Tanner about her unique approaches to birthing through her work as a midwife, doula and birthing coach. She shares her experiences in learning how to hold space to help mothers feel their belonging during the birthing process, and discusses how birthing can be approached as a form of sacred activism. Reise talks about how to reclaim the deep feminine and the role of the earth as the divine feminine in holistic transformation, which leads us to discuss the necessity of honoring intuitive ways of knowing in scholarship. We end the episode exploring some problems of our times and the importance of the continual development of approaches and strategies to conscious parenting. Reise Tanner is a PhD student in East West Psychology focused on decolonial depth psychology, ecopsychology, and applied mythology at the crossroads with feminism, indigenous traditions and liberatory methods. Her research positions birthwork as sacred activism and mothering within feminist discourse while exploring archetypes of the Feminine and centering what has been marginalized. As a seasoned doula, she views the birthing process as an initiation and believes that each birth—whether to a human or project or new version of Self— has the power to be transformative and meaningful for everyone involved. Reise is also a perinatal educator, Certified Empowerment Coach, Birthing From Within Mentor, Birth Story Listener, and mother who has attended hundreds of births and supported thousands of people on their birth journeys and beyond through groups and classes. She has trained doulas and created two innovative postpartum programs that feature storytelling: Wild Return and Wild & Rooted. In addition to attending many midwifery and birth-related trainings in the US and abroad, she has spoken publicly on several panels, and presented to the medical community. In honor of Black Music Appreciation Month and singer, songwriter Phyllis Hyman, our guest is Glenda Gracia, the executrix for The Estate of Phyllis Hyman and the former founding Executive Director of the Black Music Association responsible, along with other music execs, for lobbying then President Jimmy Carter to launch the perennial celebration of Black Music Month and host an inaugural celebration on the White House lawn in June, 1979. As one of the people who knew her best, Glenda managed the uber-talented singer with the impeccable and distinguishable voice, Phyllis Hyman from 1985 until her untimely passing in June, 1995. Glenda had a unique relationship with Phyllis who felt like she was always struggling to have her voice heard. "Phyllis was one of the most extraordinarily bright people that I know. I'm gonna say she was genius. She had very significant ideas about the way she wanted to do things and who she wanted to be." says Glenda "I wanted to always honor that." Today, Glenda continues to uplift Phyllis' legacy. And with good reason. While rarely easy under any circumstances, we make dying a lot harder than it has to be. A large majority of Americans still die in hospitals or nursing homes. Many suffer poorly controlled pain or other physical miseries and endure their final days feeling undignified and a burden to others.When someone we love is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, the worst thing we can imagine is that he or she might die. The sobering fact is that there are worse things than having someone you love die.People often confuse Hospice and Palliative Care.Hospice is intended for the last six months of end of life care and palliative care treats anyone with a chronic serious illness. They share the same philosophy which is physicians who are treating people with a serious illness should be treating the whole person, should be respecting their wishes and should be enhancing the quality of life.People who come to palliative care may have a terminal illness, may be being treated for a terminal illness or may have a chronic illness that causes their death or it may lead to something else. People that have been treated successfully for cancer but continue to have symptoms because of the treatment. Palliative care addresses the patient and family and gives them all the information they need so that they can make informed choices about what they want. It also includes symptom management to prevent, anticipate and treat the symptoms that occur. Pain management is another small part of palliative care. Most people are not trained on how to manage pain. Expectations should be realistic. You can never guarantee it might disappear completely but offer a way of living with their pain and is not necessarily their enemy. Aishah Shahidah Simmons’s award-winning cultural work expresses its voice through the art of documentary filmmaking, writing, teaching, public speaking and activism. Her work is informed by her lived experiences as a Black feminist lesbian, a child sexual abuse survivor, an adult rape survivor and a Buddhist practitioner.  She is the producer/director of the 2006 groundbreaking, acclaimed film, NO! The Rape Documentary and the organizer/editor of the 2020 Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology, Love WITH Accountability: Digging Up the Roots of Child Sexual Abuse (AK Press). The anthology Aishah is presently working on the third part of three survivor-centered cultural works that seeks to disrupt and end childhood sexual abuse and adult rape in Black communities. Aishah is also in a two-year training to become a certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher as a continuation of her 18-year Buddhist practice. Having recovered from his own painful and long journey through anxiety, depression, and burnout, he now helps organizations, leaders, and teams heal and reverse the spiral of disengagement and burnout by sharing proven concepts and methods to enhance joy and peak performance. Jacob Hess, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) instructor trained through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Carrie Skarda, PsyD, is a psychologist in private practice. She has provided individual and couples therapy with particular interest in attachment trauma and mindfulness, and has studied and practiced mindfulness and formal meditation for over ten years. Kyle Anderson, PhD, is a professor of Chinese and Asian Studies, currently an administrator in Global Learning, International Partnerships and Initiatives at Clemson University, and came to mindfulness meditation through his studies in Asian literature. When Erik was 20 years old he was in a car accident that changed his life. His girlfriend died in the accident and he had suffered a major concussion. He developed Post Traumatic Stress, and throughout the next two years, went through many hard times. Then he saw a "Time Magazine" article that claimed the best natural stress reliever was Mindfulness Meditation. He discovered that meditation helped him to be a better athlete while playing college baseball and helped his grades improve with less effort. Throughout college he started to wonder if there was any evidence for this experience or if he was just a crazy. Erik found that meditation had merged into the Psychology world and research indicates meditation was starting to reveal the benefits he was experiencing. He decided to get his Masters in Psychology and study Meditation and Flow States (many athletes call it "The Zone".)  He was trained to become a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher through UMass Medical School, and using technology, he measures the effects that his clients have gained through the practice of Meditation. Erik learned that by developing a mindful training practice, he could start to regulate and control his thinking and his emotions. This allowed him to influence your physiology and change your relationship to life.
