This week, Editors Don Williams and Nic de Sena discuss the new Triumph Scrambler. This model uses the 1200 twin engine from the Bonneville range, and it in two distinct flavors, the X and the XE. Previous versions of the Scrambler were not very off-road focused, however Triumph has changed all that, and Nic had the opportunity to do a lot of pretty hard-core desert riding in his quest to find out how capable the Scrambler truly is once it goes off-pavement.    In the second segment this week, I chat with the recently appointed Head of MV Agusta North America, Luca Dovesi. Luca started his career with Ducati in Thailand, and he then moved on to KTM Singapore where he was head of After Sales and Network Development. Three and a half years later, in January 2023, he was brought in by KTM from Singapore, to head up the re-organization and re-emergence of MV in the US. As Head of the premier brand of Italian performance motorcycles, Luca's energy and enthusiasm came across very clearly as we talked about the progress made so far, and what KTM's plans are for the storied Italian marque.    So, from all of us here at Ultimate Motorcycling, we hope you enjoy this episode! In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Tilly Lyles.Tilly joined Toyota Insurance Services in March 2023, after moving across from Toyota GB.She'd undertaken a year's Student placement with Toyota in 2019 and was invited back onto the 18 month Graduate scheme after she completed her degree in 2021. Her student placement was spent within the Network Development team under Operations, and she returned to the Network Operations team for one of her graduate rotations.Other rotations during that programme included Retailer Services, Customer Experience & Innovation and Customer & Network Support. Each rotation provided an opportunity to manage projects, present to Directors and Senior management, plan and coordinate brand events and manage relationships with external partners. During her time so far with Toyota Insurance Services she's enjoyed the opportunity to offer support and advice to colleagues within Toyota and Lexus Centres and Groups.I'm pretty sure that Tilly is the youngest guest I've invited to join me. I first met her about a year ago as part of the work we have been doing with Toyota. She joined the Toyota Insurance Services team as an Insurance Performance Manager and took part in our Towards Fulfilling Performance development programme. Tilly immediately impressed my colleague Ian and me with her mindset and approach to the programme.During one conversation I had with her CEO he said, "Why don't you take a different angle with an episode of CAREER-VIEW MIRROR and feature someone who is much earlier in their career?"I thought this was a great idea and I hope that Tilly's episode will be particularly helpful for listeners who themselves are in the early stages of their career and find her experience relatable.I look forward to hearing what resonates with you.Connect with Tilly on LinkedIn: Tilly LylesThank you to our sponsors: ASKE Consulting Email: hello@askeconsulting.co.ukAquilaeEmail: cvm@aquilae.co.ukEpisode Directory on Instagram @careerviewmirror  If you enjoy listening to our guests career stories, please follow CAREER-VIEW MIRROR in your podcast app. Episode recorded on 9 January 2024.

EA - What we talk about when we talk about community building by James Herbert

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What we talk about when we talk about community building, published by James Herbert on June 27, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. These are my views, they are not necessarily the views of Effective Altruism Netherlands. Thanks to those people who provided comments on a draft of this post. Summary In this post I introduce a set of terms that could be useful for discussing EA community building strategy. I take as a starting point the claim that broadly speaking, effective altruism is an attempt at social change. There are four different approaches to social change: Social Movement Support, Field Building, Network Development, and Promoting the Uptake of Practices by Organizations. The post illustrates these approaches using different historical examples: The Civil Rights Movement mainly used Social Movement Support The field of Public Health primarily focused on Field Building The United Nations emphasized Network Development The Fair Trade movement concentrated on Promoting the Uptake of Practices by Organizations I then take a stab at describing EA's current approach. Something like: Field Building (40%), Network Development (35%), Movement Support (20%), and Promoting the Uptake of Practices by Organizations (5%). I also suggest a re-balancing: Field Building (50%), Movement Support (25%), Network Development (15%), and Promoting the Uptake of Practices by Organizations (10%). This shift would make EA more engaged with society and more focused on its core mission, while spending less time in its own bubble. Finally, I have a few questions for you, the reader: Do you agree that, broadly speaking, EA is an attempt to bring about social change? Is there something missing from the set of social change approaches I've described? What do you think EA's current social change portfolio is? What do you think it ought to be? How should we inform the above decision? Historical case studies? Something else? Introduction Effective altruism has been called many things. MacAskill defines it as follows: (i) the use of evidence and careful reasoning to work out how to maximize the good with a given unit of resources, tentatively understanding ‘the good' in impartial welfarist terms, and (ii) the use of the findings from (i) to try to improve the world. (i) refers to effective altruism as an intellectual project (or ‘research field'); (ii) refers to effective altruism as a practical project (or ‘social movement'). CEA's outward-facing website (effectivealtruism.org) uses a similar definition: “Effective altruism is a research field and practical community that aims to find the best ways to help others, and put them into practice”. Wikipedia also: “Effective altruism is a philosophical and social movement that advocates ‘using evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible, and taking action on that basis'”. I think these definitions are broadly correct. However, to speak in more abstract terms, I think EA is an attempt to bring about social change. By social change I mean the not-insignificant alteration of society. For example, changes in social institutions, social behaviours, or social relations. Examples of other attempts at social change include: building the field of public health, the fair trade movement, the civil rights movement, and the development of the UN. Following MacAskill's definition, the social change that EA is aiming for is something like: building effective altruism as a research field and helping people use its findings when making decisions about their donations, careers, etc. The assumption being that, by doing this, you're pursuing one of the most effective strategies for doing good and, in the words of CEA, you're helping to build a radically better world, a world in which humanity has solved a range of pressing global pro...

In much of the world, a major capital city without passenger trains would be unthinkable, yet that's been the case in Columbus since 1979. With the last Amtrak train's departure that year, Central Ohio bet all its transportation chips on cars, buses, and airplanes, and the area's transit puzzle has been without passenger trains of any kind since then, earning Columbus the dubious distinction of today being the country's second largest city without any passenger rail service at all. Amtrak's return to Central Ohio has been long-discussed and debated: former Governor Ted Strickland felt trains were important to the state's economic development, but his successor John Kasich, did not, and in 2010, Kasich rejected a $17M annual subsidy to keep passenger trains running in Central Ohio as too expensive. With the passage of President Biden's new Federal infrastructure bill in 2022, which included $2.3B to expand Amtrak, plus encouraging signals from the administration of current Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, is the stage finally set for Amtrak's return to Central Ohio? The panelists are: William Murdock, Executive Director, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission Erin Rosiello, Vice Chair, All Aboard Ohio And Arun Rao, Director of Network Development, Amtrak The moderator is Elizabeth Blount McCormick, President, Uniglobe Travel Designers. This forum was sponsored by HNTB and was supported by the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. The forum livestream was supported by The Center for Human Kindness at The Columbus Foundation and The Columbus Dispatch. It was recorded before a live audience on March 15, 2023.

During the TransCityRail North event in Manchester, AECOM led a panel discussion that included Eoin O'Neill, Network Rail's Capital Delivery Director for the North West and Central Region, Conor Linnell, AECOM's Rail Leader for the North West and Central Region, and Georgia Ehrmann, Avanti West Coast's Head of Network Development and Planning. The need for more industry collaboration was evident throughout the debate, with Eoin O'Neill encouraging the supply chain to think of Network Rail as a colleague rather than a customer. Eoin also outlined how Network Rail is striving to make it simpler for SMEs to participate in CP7 possibilities, making it clear to attendees that while Eastern suspended their CP7 procurement on Friday with hopes to relaunch it soon, NW&C has no plans to do the same.Connor provided AECOM's perspective, emphasising that in his wide experience if we are all working toward the same goal but not together, efficiencies are lost.Georgia offered some intriguing statistics to the discussion, stating that research has shown that every £1 invested in rail in the North generates £2.50 in economic growth.

Creating a New Healthcare

Friends,The focus of this interview is on a 'greenfield' project that was under wraps for the past three years, and has only recently been revealed. Project Fulcrum was launched in the spring of 2018 by the CEO and senior leadership team of AdventHealth - one of the largest healthcare systems in the country. It’s bold purpose - “to disrupt its legacy provider business model with consumer-driven innovation”.  Our guest this week is Nick Archer, the CEO of Project Fulcrum. In this role he leads a cross-functional team from brand experience, banking, retail, and healthcare to build new products and experiences. He has held various leadership positions at AdventHealth in strategy and finance, most recently serving as the VP of Finance for Network Development and Post-Acute Care. He serves on the boards of United Against Poverty and Andrews Memorial Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. Nick earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Oakwood University and an MBA from the University of Florida’s Hough Graduate School of Business. In this episode, we’ll discover:The competitive market forces that led AdventHealth’s leadership team to make the decision to disrupt their own business model. The fundamental consumer problems & issues that Nick and his team discovered during their customer discovery work. The consumer innovation initiative that Project Fulcrum has deployed to over 50,000 patients. Some of the early outcomes they’ve achieved, such as a 30% reduction in no-show rates. This interview felt like listening to a superb master class in healthcare consumerism. Although many of us in healthcare use words like ‘empathy’, ‘consumer-focus’ and ‘whole person care’ - Nick and his team, as you’ll hear in this interview, have taken a very different approach to delivering on these concepts. For example - the notion that ‘empathy’ isn’t just identifying your customer’s pain points, but must also include understanding what role they want you to play in solving those problems. Nick’s team discovered that their patients did not want things done to them, but instead were looking for someone to “come alongside, champion and remove barriers”.  Another example - the notion that ‘conversation’ itself has a significant healthcare value proposition. As Nick puts it, “using the medium of conversation as a way to drive value, whereas traditionally the paradigm of communication in medical practice is largely task focused and transactional”. There are numerous remarkable and unique aspects to Project Fulcrum. The commitment to transformation - made by the AdventHealth senior leadership team - to protect, support and resource a greenfield innovation division. Their relentless pursuit to understand the consumer perspective and make that priority number one. The fact that they intentionally chose to start by creating a more personalized consumer experience. And, their intention to eliminate disparities & inequities in experience and access. As Nick states,“We want to democratize the idea of concierge and make care accessible to everyone.”Project Fulcrum is a bold strategic commitment to investing in the future; to investing in AdventHealth’s differentiation and growth; and to investing in a significant, positive inflection in patient care. As Nick eloquently states during the interview, “The challenges of today can’t prevent us from thinking through and designing the success of the future”. This initiative is a remarkable example of a disruptive innovation and I suspect numerous case studies will be written about it. For me, however, the most essential theme is the humanistic one. This is a story about leadership that clearly believes that enhancing human connection - empathetic dialogue and healing relationship - is necessary to a successful healthcare delivery system and critical for a thriving healthcare business model. If you want to understand what ‘humanizing healthcare’ can look like, I suggest you listen to this interview with Nicholas Archer, CEO of Project Fulcrum at AdventHealth.Until next time, be safe and be well.Zeev Neuwirth, MD

Today’s episode features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Iyad Tarazi, President, CEO, and Co-Founder of Federated WirelessIyad is a technology industry trailblazer with experience in successful commercialization of disruptive cloud native SaaS technologies. Prior to Federated Wireless, he served as Vice President of Network Development and led the Network Vision modernization project at Sprint Corp.In this interview, Iyad discusses CBRS, shared spectrum, and the massive potential for disruption and innovation they represent, as well as the interesting intersections between CBRS and edge computing.Key Quotes“The most thrilling part of CBRS is that it truly is free. It's really democratizing wireless access.”“This is like Airbnb. Don't sell the house, I'll rent the room for you tomorrow. That's basically what we're doing. We make the spectrum available immediately, which is great for economics and great for innovation.”“When we go from a few people building technology on spectrum to thousands and thousands if not millions of deployments, the amount of innovation we’re going to get in the software technology ecosystem is going to go through the roof…Innovation is going to take off. That's democratization in the best way possible."“The U.S. will become the most innovative, by far, in creating solutions and applications and technology for wireless, because they’ll be able to get a thousand enterprises or a thousand companies all innovating at the same time.”“At the end of the day, we're a software company that sits on top of an open ecosystem with a bunch of partners built around a very, very innovative spectrum model that's enabled by a really innovative government. The FCC and the DOD and NTIA and the White House--what they've done here over the last 10+ years in terms of creating this innovation model has really been first in the world.”“All we really do right now is facilitate the management and enable the system. We pass more than 90% of the value of what's happening and what the spectrum offers over to our customers. We're more focused on enabling the ecosystem and enabling our customers than anything else. We're an enablement platform at the end of the day.”SponsorsOver the Edge is brought to you by the generous sponsorship of Catchpoint, NetFoundry, Ori Industries, Packet, Seagate, Vapor IO, and Zenlayer. The featured sponsor of this episode of Over the Edge is Seagate Technology. Abstract: Several studies on rodent models with an Autism Spectrum Disorders-like (ASD) phenotype, notably Magel2-deficient mice, have shown a rescue of deficits in adult social behavior after neonatal administration of oxytocin. However, the neurobiological alterations responsible for the social deficits and the mechanism by which oxytocin-administration in infancy has a rescue effect in adulthood remain unclear. Here we show that Magel2-deficient adult mice exhibit a deficit in social memory that is corrected by neonatal oxytocin administration. We studied hippocampal regions known to be associated with social memory engrams involving the OT-system. At critical stages of development, we characterized cellular, physiological and biochemical alterations of these hippocampal regions in Magel2-deficient mice, alterations present in several ASD models. Overall we demonstrate a strong impact of oxytocin-administration at key stages of postnatal hippocampal neurodevelopment, shedding light on the role for oxytocin in treating neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in social memory. Abstract: NKCC1 is the primary transporter mediating chloride uptake in immature principal neurons, but its role in the development of in vivo network dynamics and cognitive abilities remains unknown. Here, we address the function of NKCC1 in developing mice using electrophysiological, optical and behavioral approaches. We report that NKCC1 deletion from telencephalic glutamatergic neurons decreases in-vitro excitatory GABA actions and impairs neuronal synchrony in neonatal hippocampal brain slices. In vivo, it has a minor impact on correlated spontaneous activity in the hippocampus and does not affect network activity in the intact visual cortex. Moreover, long-term effects of the developmental NKCC1 deletion on synaptic maturation, network dynamics and behavioral performance are subtle. Our data reveal a neural network function of depolarizing GABA in the hippocampus in vivo, but challenge the hypothesis that NKCC1 is essential for major aspects of hippocampal development. I have always been fascinated with television. I consume hours and hours of it each week and have since I was a kid. I was an 80s baby raised by a single mom who worked full time so the TV was my babysitter a lot of the time. And since I was little I have dreamed of being on TV, making people laugh and being a part of their family week after week. And while television has changed a lot since the 80s, my dream hasn't. The feeling I get when I watch a great show hasn't changed either. When I first moved to LA I immersed myself in improv and comedy at the Groundlings. I thought the best way to get my own show was to just be funny and work with great people and eventually I would get cast. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I wish I could tell myself to become a producer and develop my own show. That's where I want to be! Now that I know more about the TV development process I understand just how little control and power actors have, unless you are also a producer. Brenda Milinkovic is the Director of Development and Programming at NBC Universal. I'm so thrilled to have Brenda Brkusic Milinkovic on the show this week to help demystify television development and shed some light on how a show gets made. Brenda is the Director of Programming and Development at NBC Universal. She works on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" and "Access Hollywood" to name a few and has several projects in development that she can't reveal just yet. She previously spent 13 years at PBS SoCal where she was responsible for directing the development, production, national distribution and marketing of programs on PBS. You might be familiar with her PBS shows like "Variety Studios: Actors on Actors" where actors interview each other. Brenda Brkusic Milinkovic is photographed during Governors Portraits on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, in North Hollywood, Calif. (Photo by Phil McCarten/Invision for the Television Academy/AP Images) Brenda has won 10 Emmy Awards, and has had 15 Emmy nominations. She currently serves on the Daytime Emmy Awards Committee and previously served as LA Area Governor on the Board of Governors for the Television Academy as well as Co-Chair of the Governors Ball for the Primetime Emmys and Co-Chair of the LA Area Emmys. To say she is a proactive member of the television community would be an understatement. She is entrenched in the development and creation of ideas for TV. So of course, I had to ask her what she thinks about the rise in popularity of streaming content over the last decade. We talked about how traditional broadcast is learning to pivot to keep viewers tuned in while streaming platforms surge. I've always been curious about how producers get in rooms with development executives and if the traditional method of going through an agent, pitching and signing a deal is still the norm. I love what Brenda has to say about this in terms of finding new talent and ideas. She recently discovered someone on YouTube and liked them so much, she started developing a show with them. How amazing! This is why I tell people to never stop creating because you never know who is watching. Brenda Milinkovic is the Director of Development and Programming at NBC Universal. We also talk about the demands of working for a major network like NBC and juggling family life. She is a mom of two and, like most of the country, has been working from home since the stay home orders were put in place. She says despite the industry shut down, they are still constantly working on developing new ideas and content for programs. This was such an inspiring conversation and really gives us a glimpse into how television gets made, and what someone looking to get into development or develop their own show can do to get a leg up. The next time you're watching a great show on NBC, you'l have a better sense of the people behind the scenes who took a nugget of an idea and followed it through until it landed in your living room.

The presenters give an update on the status of the Library of Congress initiative to review the current bibliographic framework to accommodate future needs in a better manner. A major focus of the initiative is to determine a transition path for the MARC 21 exchange format in order to reap the benefits of newer technology while preserving a robust data exchange that has supported resource sharing and cataloging cost savings in recent decades. McCallum will provide background on some of the current standards and format structures to help understand what some of the possibilities might be for the future. Speaker Biography: Beacher Wiggins, director for Acquisitions & Bibliographic Access, has had a long career at the Library of Congress. One of his early positions was as the assistant to Henriette Avram, the developer of the MARC 21 standard. Wiggins compares the history of MARC with today's needs for a bibliographic exchange environment that will support linked data. Speaker Biography: Sally McCallum is chief of the Network Development and MARC Standards Office at the Library of Congress, responsible for the maintenance of the MARC21 formats and a number of other interoperability-related standards such as an XML version of MARC, the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol, and the Encoded Archival Description DTD.
