Michael Kresovich and Justin Beck break down this Saturday's Big Ten showdown between Penn State and Ohio State. The guys dive deep into how Penn State's offense matches up against one of the nation's best defenses, what the Nittany Lions need to do to move the ball effectively, and why Ohio State continues to look like a playoff contender. They also analyze the Buckeyes' roster and schedule so far, highlighting key players and position groups that could make the difference in this matchup. 19 year-old Justin Back had everything going for him - he was fresh out of high school, just completed a Fire Science program, and was set to ship off to Navy basic training in only 10 days. Justin was friendly with everyone…but did your folks ever tell you to be careful of who you were hanging out with when you were young? Sandy Cates, Justin's mom, was certainly one of those parents…and for good reason. A mother's intuition is often right…but a strange feeling she had would turn into desperate fear one cold afternoon in January of 2014, when her son Justin went missing. One this episode, Amanda reminds all the elderladies to get those titties checked. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month after all. Melissa tells a story of Justin Beck at a Black family funeral and his first Thanksgiving with the beloved Shorty and Mercy. Also, do you sometimes root for scammers? Melissa said she did until Amanda reminded her she shouldn't.
Mercury is in retrograde. Amanda's fish are very fertile, but Melissa ain't because she thinks she's arrived at perimenopause. Aaah. Old age. Elbows, tops of hands, necks and bottom teeth — do you know that these body parts are dead giveaways? Dead giveaaaaway that you are old. The ladies also ask the age-old question — why are men? Which leads to a discussion about how Chris and Justin, the trusted and loyal Imperfect Spouses, would be featured on an episode of Snapped if they ever cheated. *Mennapause, the title of this episode, is how Justin Beck misspelled it during a Monday Night Live so if you missed it, that's the explanation of this stranger-friend inside joke. Forget your elbows. We're old because we just explained an inside joke where the whole point is to not explain, but OK!
In their first conversation after a rollercoaster of an emotional, hormonal and awkward Monday Night Live (if you missed it, just know the future of podcast was in danger, LOL), Amanda Lee Bong had the nerve to say she thought Adam Duritz was “spicy white” like Melissa's husband Justin Beck so this episode opens with a BANG. The theme for today is caucasity — the wholesome kind we can all get behind like Third Eye Blind and Mazzy Star. The two discuss celebrity crushes, the era in their lives where they dressed sexy and how their sisters are churchy.

Amanda and Melissa discuss how hard it is to find a bathing suit for 40-year-old women. Because Melissa ain't trying to call attention to herself in a swimsuit, she's doing David Blaine level magic tricks with poolside accessories like her straw hat that says “silently judging you.” Amanda tells Melissa that the hat is “cheugy.” What is cheugy? Pronounced CHOO-GEE like GIRL not JEE like Jesus (who might also be cheugy according to these two olds) means — well, listen to find out! 2021 is the year of “like, realizing things” for Melissa. Melissa and Amanda discuss the true ins and outs and emotional costs of working outside the home (or in the home remotely while parenting). Amanda, who's been known the struggle, gives Melissa some encouragement and suggests maybe she lower some of her hygiene and cleanliness standards. The interview with our featured guest, Dr. Kyu Rhee, was conducted in April '21. Data referenced during this conversation will have changed since the recording. So, we know that inequality exists. But, do we think the government can fix it? Or can private enterprise step in to lend data, insights and financial muscle toward the problem? This week's episode of Contakt World dives into the hot button issues of data collection, medical trends, big business, and minority populations, as well as the politics of public health – all viewed through the lens of Kyu Rhee, Senior Vice President of CVS Health, and Chief Medical Officer for Aetna, which are two of the biggest medical forces in the United States. Join our hosts Justin Beck, Catherine Delcin and Deepti Pahwa, as they speak with Rhee, and discuss the challenges faced by doctors, data collectors, private enterprises and public officials as they work together toward a better future. Melissa and Amanda sit down for an illuminating discussion with astrologer Andy Bellatti to find out more about their serendipitous working relationship turned friendship. Known as synastry, synastry charts are used to examine relationships between two people, more specifically, how they may affect one another individually. There's healing and career growth to be found in this friendship which WOW! So-called 'conversion therapy' is a form of torture used against LGBTQ people in Britain and beyond: the human consequences are beyond horrific. Justin Beck is a survivor, who endured years of the practice at a Pentecostal Church: he tells me how he got there, the utter turmoil that was unleashed, how he was driven to the brink of suicide - and how he finally got help. He tells me about finding happiness - but about the devastating long-term consequences, and about those LGBTQ people being subjected to this torture. We talk, too, about the government's LGBTQ advisory panel being shut down - with one member accusing the Conservatives of creating a "hostile environment" for LBGTQ people - and the failure to properly end this barbaric practice.CONTENT WARNING: Suicidal ideations, extreme mental distressHelp us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. But before they got to that, there was discussion on white folks staying outta Black business, inexplicably My First Period and how to really use a body basal thermometer. Maybe they’re becoming friends because none of this felt weird. LOL. Want to support Amanda and Melissa, the strangers behind your favorite new podcast? Join our Patreon! On the season three premiere of Imperfect Strangers, one of only three podcasts Michael K of DListed listens to, Melissa catches up with Amanda by telling her all about pandemic homeschooling fatigue. Our two stranger-friends also discover they differ wildly on how they shop. Amanda loves an “internet shopping moment” and has purchased many things because that Instagram be knowing. Melissa confesses she was deathly afraid of using credit cards online and thus has become mostly an online window shopper. Also, Amanda, on a whim, quit her personal Instagram. Listen for Melissa’s jealousy. Want to support Amanda and Melissa, the strangers behind your favorite new podcast? Join our Patreon! It’s AMAZING if we do say so ourselves (and we do). On the season finale of season 2, Melissa and Amanda reach a new level in this “getting to know each other situation.” Amanda reveals, in full, that she once had a sizable collection of pewter fairies holding crystals. This knowledge unlocks a new understanding for Melissa who had a preconceived notion of Amanda as just a “fitness lady” and not this nuanced nerd, which is how Melissa sees herself. Listen to them chat about and dispel the misperceptions they’d had about each other this whole time! Fascinating. Want to support Amanda and Melissa, the strangers behind your favorite new podcast? If you thought we were judgmental last week while telling you how to name your baby in ways we approve, wait until you hear how we feel about what you shouldn’t do on your wedding day. On this episode, marvel at Melissa and Amanda’s total lack of respect for the traditional wedding. Apologies in advance because even if we’re just being honest, there’s a 78% chance we’re being rude. This week Amanda and Melissa discuss the importance of naming a child. Baby naming is serious as cancer rhythm is a dancer. Very serious business. Who's right? And furthermore, who decides what is right? It's the fundamental question of our times, not only in terms of ethics, but also systems of information. In this age of COVID, misinformation and social media, there's a lot to contend with. So, how do we navigate it? Join our hosts Justin Beck, Catherine Delcin and Deepti Pahwa, as they speak with Dr. Seema Yasmin, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, poet, medical doctor and author who discusses the direct effects of Facebook on public health. We also hear from Kemoy Campbell, a retired Olympic distance runner from Jamaica, who educates athletes on the importance of heart health, and how to properly listen to your body, especially in the age of COVID. As always, we'll talk about how to help our local health departments – and encourage innovation and technology integration – all while remaining empathetic, plus keeping an eye toward health equity for all. Did we not know that the big bug would hit? Or did we? Did our trusted officials just kick the can down the road? Or does the problem lie with the general public – and their unwillingness to listen to expert opinion and information? This week's episode of Contakt World dives into the hot button issues of race, misinformation systems, pandemic plans and the politics of public health – specifically, through the lens of E. Oscar Alleyne, DrPH, MPH, epidemiologist and Chief of Programs and Services for NACCHO, The National Association of County and City Health Officials. Join our hosts Justin Beck, Catherine Delcin and Deepti Pahwa, as they speak with Alleyne, and discuss the challenges faced by public health organizations, epidemiologists and elected officials. Join our hosts Justin Beck, Catherine Delcin and Deepti Pahwa as they explore the hot-button issues surrounding COVID-19 and other public health issues of our time. In this first episode of Contakt World, our hosts talk with Dr. Hotez, and explore his thoughts on the pandemic, as well as how it's affecting marginalized communities, driving misinformation and straining departments – and even how the biggest e-tailers can be leading promoters of anti-science attitudes. They also speak with Robert Ellington of HALOS - a nonprofit organization in Charleston, S.C., about kinship care, and how COVID has uprooted family structures of all kinds. The impromptu episode! What started as guest spot on the intro to the Dan Lilker episode, turned into a 90 minute shit talking sesh with Daryl Palumbo and Justin Beck of Glassjaw. Arty and Ron nearly shit themselves at the tales of Long Island woe and international stardom the GJ boys dish out. Also a cameo from Mike D (kill your idols)....GAY CRAPPO! Get in! Subscribe at apple podcasts or listen on Stitcher, www.saintvitusbar.com or soundcloud. Thanks for listening.
The whole special menagerie (Goodman, Question Boy, Benny Durwood, Sheri from the Vale, PPage and Justin Beck) return for another fun-filled holiday 'cast. It's chock full of dreidel spinning, bah-humbugery, inappropriate sexual innuedo, wassailing and a very special Christmas fable narrated by PPage.
Tim, Question Boy, Benny and Durwood are joined by very special guests: Sherry from the Vale, PPage and the ghost of producers past--Justin Beck. Things get warm and fuzzy--and steamy--as the all-star cast talks TV and learns the true meaning of Christmas. Plus: a somewhat audible live phone call with George D.!
Hey, we made it. Sunny day real estate! Less fires to put out on the 2nd floor. Whee. OK, so like it or not, Question Boy (Joe Garofoli, Chronicle politics writer), Adjustin' (Justin Beck), Manny (Benny Evangelista) and Your Cultural Commissar, all survived and we'll continue to put out as much aural rambling and pointlessness as anyone could stand. In the TV-related news segment of today's podcast, Tim vaguely mentions something about the networks' plan for the fall season. In the non-TV-related news segment of today's podcast, Tim specifically points out that his balls hurt. Yea for us. Beware to you. "Brutal."
It starts out like a car careening around a mountain road driven by a cat named Toonces, and it ends, many letters and calls and impersonations later, in a ditch. Just how we like it. We have now scientifically traced the lack of oxygen in the podcave to an increased level of giggling and nonsense in the Thursday installment of the podcast. Oh, The Count. How we love you. By the way, there's a chance we'll only have one, possibly even none of these aural works of art for you enjoyment next week. Question Boy (Chronicle media and political writer Joe Garofoli) has family in town and we have no idea if super sub producer Justin Beck even cares about doing another one or two. In this installment, he really has to work the bleep button thanks in large part to Todd in the 212 who wonders over and over again why the word (bleep) gets bleeped while the word (bleep) doesn't get bleeped out? Justin, who we call Jason, explains the reason and then, well, forgets to bleep one of them. Todd, our 100th TVTM Facebook fan, cautions me about appearing on "Fighting Talk" our favorite other podcast/radio show: "If you go on there Goodman, you'll get slaughtered." By the way: Latin America is in the books! We got a call from Mexico thanks Charles!
Oh, heck yes we have calls. And MP3s. We complained about the lack of them, and voila they arrived. Question Boy (Chronicle media and politics writer Joe Garofoli) details why Benny is out (we think he listened to an entire podcast for the first time, THEN had the heart attack) and the recent appearance of Voice of America in the podcave. Benny, by the way, told super sub producer Justin Beck where the MP3s were hiding. So we air those. Lots of stuff to air. Plus: Dark heart cackles. A child calls no, not the butt call from court and we think the little tyke threatened us. In related youth news, "the kids love Justin's potty mouth." Also, Justin's Corner taps into the slacker market: "I've just quit caring." A letter from Prague! (Cue: Porno Putin.) Taldar calls and uses Wickedmachine to beat us down! Walter from Florida says he's grown "disturbingly fond of Porno Dick" and then stumps us with a question (I know, stunner). Worse, he prefaces the question by saying he probably should have just asked Amber. So maybe we'll Ask Amber next time. Andrew calls from Ireland and then calls for TVTM's first gay Question Boy! It's a quick, "compelling" podcast with surprising turns and tons of "quality," so don't miss it.
After acknowledging that producer Benny Evangelista had a heart attack recently but is recovering nicely and should return sometime soon to man the knobs we get back to business at the TVTM. And that business is to give the people nothing. ("And loving it!") We actually do have stuff to talk about. The Voice of America was filming and recording Question Boy (Chronicle media and political writer Joe Garofoli) for a story about what journalists are doing in new media areas to enhance their positions. So I guess his being Porno Putin and Bill Walton makes him the poster boy for how NOT to branch out. We have a lot of TV and non-TV news, including how Nickelodeon is trying to get ahead of the New Dora controversy by sending out a statement about how she's "age appropriate" and that she has not, as we've said, grown into a hootchie skank. Taking this one step further (of course) we imagine how "Maisy" grows into a more adult oriented series, where Charlie ends up on "Bars." Later we have a HUGE announcement about "Benny's Corner." Here's a hint: TVTM management has decided to shift "Justin's Corner" (that's super-sub producer Justin Beck, who's propensity to swear really resonates with the young crowd) to one of our other properties, like MTV or the CW. Something good is going to come out of Benny's ticker problems and that something is, well, enormous profits for the TVTM corporation. In addition, some of the people on our TVTM Facebook page discuss what Benny's show should be about. And hey, we found BobMac's "lost" MP3 message, where he "re-edits" our reading of his script for "Bars," adding a laugh track. Yes, he's turned "Bars" into a sitcom instead a bleak documentary. He even lays in a bit of our unofficial theme song, "Mission Rock Resort" from Mark Eitzel of American Music Club. The script doesn't make much more sense to us with a laugh track. But hey, as Eitzel says, "Nothing changes. Not ever."
It's uncharacteristic of us to ever turn serious in regard to the TV Talk Machine, but we thought it was time to tell you the good news about some recent bad news. On March 4, our friend, colleague and producer, Benny Evangelista, had a heart attack. He's now out of the hospital and well on his way to recovery, but we thought you should know -- with Benny's blessing -- why he's been absent and could be for a couple of more weeks or until he's feeling good enough to come back to work. By all accounts, Benny got really lucky and caught some breaks (we'll spare you the details, but Benny says that if you're feeling chest pains, even some you might not think are related to a heart attack, take action right away...We think Benny's love of "Scrubs" contributed to him being drawn to a hospital and the early arrival did more than you could ever know). We're happy to report that Benny, aka Manny, aka Chocoknobs, is feeing much better. Enough so that he confirms that all those missing MP3s and such are in a special place and he'll try to get them to Justin Beck, our super-sub producer, when he can. Also, Joe Garofoli -- aka Question Boy -- and I would like fans of the twisted humor of the TVTM to rest assured that once we found out Benny was going to make it, we took the opportunity to make fun of him. When Justin and Marcus Chan set up a digital recorder so that people at the Chronicle could wish Benny well when he was in the ICU, Joe and I recorded a message that started, "Well, we hope you're laying down for this....It's going to be 47 minutes." We told him that "faking" a heart attack was the sleaziest stunt we'd ever seen to bring back "Benny's Corner." And we told him that the "Save Benny's Corner" fan page on Facebook had been changed to a more simple "Save Benny." We also promised a lingering, inappropriate hug in his hospital shorty robe. In all seriousness, we'll definitely welcome back our essential podcast partner with a warm embrace when he's ready. In the meantime, grant us -- and Justin -- a little slack if we came up a little short in the two podcasts this week. Also, you may have noticed that we cooled it on the plans to have a big TV Talk Machine beer bash at the 21st Amendment in San Francisco. Just when we were ready to drink, Benny had to go and ruin it by nearly dying (yep, they had to use the paddles on him.) But never fear, when the time is right, we can now turn it into a Welcome Back Benny/TVTM Birthday bash and the fine folks at the 21st Amendment have generously agreed to let our extended family of listeners come in, perhaps even to our own area, and fill the place with bad Bill Walton impressions.
There's a machine that records our voices. We borrowed Justin Beck to turn it on. Question Boy (Chronicle media and political writer Joe Garofoli) spoke into one microphone. I spoke into the other. When it was over, this is what happened.
