The levels go back to as early as July 2020.Back in 2017, a Government inquiry found 20 per cent of the country's tap water was not up to standard, with as many as 750,000 New Zealanders exposed to drinking water that was not safe.Water New Zealand is the industry body for the three water sector - drinking water, waste water and storm water.Water NZ Technical Manager Noel Roberts told Kerre McIvor the main problem is resources."Both people capability and funds, and stretched between multiple needs for funding, especially from rates.A Beca report says New Zealand needs to look at desalination and purifying of waste water. Mr Roberts says the level of expertise required is not cheap, and there are not many individuals around the country who can do it."That's sort of why the DIA is looking at the three waters reform and what the options are there."

Yesterday morning, I thought I’d start my programme with another call to rationalise or even nationalise our water and wastewater operations. This is prompted by situations facing Waikouaiti, Karitane and Turnberry who have now been joined by Akaroa.  Towns whose basic necessity, water, has been poisoned by lead and opossums.  They join a long line of shameful water management including our capital. If the government wants a shovel ready infrastructure project to get their teeth into then fixing the nation’s water supply should be at the top of the list. But that was yesterday. Today we’re back in lockdowns.  Called faster than ever before, which caused a strange pandemonium. I have a great sympathy for all the Cafes and hospitality businesses, who suddenly had just minutes to hours to sort their stock out.  Frantically trying to save food before being forced to throw it all out and the money it represents. But I understand the need for health services to crack on.  I’ve always found it strange that having decided a lockdown was necessary we delayed the lockdown for days.  It’s not like the virus takes any time off.  It’s always working 24/7. What I don’t understand is the panicked exodus to baches that occurred. I understand that lockdown is better at the beach but what part of Stay Safe Stay Local do the beachgoers not understand? Are they aware that the locals hate the invasion because of the pressure already basic medical services and supply chains for smaller supermarkets?  Do they not understand that they could be just like the woman at the centre of this current cluster who felt she didn’t have the virus.  That meant she felt free to ravel.  That meant she could have introduced the cluster to New Plymouth. Anyone of the bach refugees could be introducing the virus to retired populations in Pauanui, Whitianga, Keri Keri or Mangawhai. Are the bach refugees also aware of the disdain they’re held in by the people whose businesses are forced to shut down in lcokdowns? Their sacrifices are being ignored.  The exodus completely negates the purpose of lockdowns to halt spread, when Aucklanders are spreading themselves all over the island. Finally, we have a vivid example of why you should scan the codes.  The woman at the centre of this cluster thought she was sweet and took a roadie to Taranaki and neglected to scan.  Leaving the good people in New Plymouth in a state of suspended existence waiting for the worst. Will she be able to remember the places she went in a town she is unfamiliar with? Was it so hard to spend five seconds to hold a phone up to a QR code?

A packed crowd at the East Otago Events Centre wanted answers from officials about the effect of lead in the water at Waikouaiti and Karitane.Whether they feel they got them is less certain.Hundreds of people flowed into the centre in Waikouaiti ahead of last night's meeting. There was standing room only at the venue and people lined the walls. The meeting was called by Public Health South.Residents wanted to know if they should eat vegetables from their gardens and if it was safe for animals to drink the water. They wanted to know if eggs from the area were safe. These were not areas of expertise for the panel, but they suggested people avoid harvesting their vegetables for a couple of weeks until more was known.National Poisons Centre director and medical toxicologist Adam Pomerleau said everybody had lead present in their bodies from background exposure. It was a cumulative toxin."We aim to keep lead exposure as low as we can."Restlessness simmered through the crowd.Otago Regional Council chairman Andrew Noone said the panel of officials and council representatives sensed residents' frustration. When he asked people to look forward, rather than back, the crowd murmured."Your reassurance doesn't mean much," one person said."We're pretty bloody angry about the whole situation," another said. One resident said it was disconcerting that information from officials kept changing."Many of us lack trust in what is being said to us."Karitane residents such as Jane Schofield wanted tanks tested.Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins said the city council was committed to supporting the community and focused on getting to the bottom of the problem."I appreciate that this is a distressing time," he said.DCC infrastructure services committee chairman Cr Jim O'Malley, a scientist, said the council had taken samples since July to assess the integrity of pipes and possible corrosion. An elevated level of lead was immediately evident at one site.O'Malley said a high reading from a December 8 sample — a result sent to the council on December 18 but not noticed until January 7 when a staff member returned from leave — was followed by results that were not of concern."What we think we're looking at is what might be best described as a pulse," he said.It appeared that the water was fine most of the time, he said. But results were unpredictable and it was therefore considered not safe to allow drinking of the water to continue. The council has stepped up the frequency of sampling.Towns around the country did not test for heavy metals frequently, O'Malley said.Jack said it was unclear from intermittent spikes in lead readings whether there could have been significant exposure.Babies, children and pregnant women were most at risk to the effects of lead exposure, Jack said.ESR (the Crown Research Institute) has concluded the risk of lead exposure through the Waikouaiti drinking water system is likely to be low.It was not known yet whether there had been long-term exposure, Jack said. "The thing with children we are concerned about is long-term development."Blood tests of lead levels would shape understanding about whether there had been long-term exposure.Symptoms of elevated lead levels in adults can include tiredness, mood changes, impaired memory, sleeplessness, irritability, headaches and joint pain.Gastrointestinal symptoms can include lack of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pains and weight loss.Young children may not show symptoms, but lead exposure over time may affect their development.Lead in mothers can be passed on to unborn babies and to infants through breast milk.

The Dunedin City Council has resorted to putting a helicopter in the sky as it scrambles to discover the source of lead poisoning to an East Otago water supply. Nearly six months after receiving the first positive test results, the council finally advised Waikouaiti and Karitane residents this week not to use tap water. Now some locals feel they are still being kept in the dark about how dangerous the poisoning could be. Anan Zaki reports.

Residents in two East Otago towns are frustrated they do not know when they can drink water out of their taps and not a tanker. Yesterday people in Waikouaiti and Karitane were told to stop drinking, cooking and preparing food using tap water due to toxic levels of lead. The levels were discovered in mid-December but the alert went to a Dunedin City Council staff member who was on holiday and they weren't picked up until the new year. While many are resigned to their new water collection, frustration and anger is bubbling away over communication delays that left residents in the dark for weeks. Tess Brunton has been speaking to residents and filed this report from Karitane.

Residents in two coastal Otago towns have been warned not to drink the water after lead was discovered in it in December. A missed email means people living in Karitane and Waikouaiti have only now been told to avoid drinking or preparing food with their tap water. Dunedin mayor Aaron Hawkins speaks to Susie Ferguson.

Residents of the Otago towns of Waikouaiti and Karitane won't be drinking the tap water for at least the next few days. Samples taken in early December found nearly four times the safe amount of lead in part of the water supply, although a missed e-mail meant that nobody at the council was aware of the problem until the New Year. Are you a new mum with painful, sore, nipples that feel like a needle is stabbing? If so you may be suffering from the all too common mastitis. An inflammation of the breast nipple and tissue. It's definitely not fun to experience and can even bring on serious illness if the infection spreads or you have a severe form of it so see your doctor stat! (one mother literally today, Oct 16th, was in hospital for days on an IV drip for this. Then came in for additional antibiotics. It's a tough condition to beat) It's estimated 30% of women by week 6 postpartum will experience a sub-acute or acute form of mastitis. This % increases with mothers who've been on antibiotics for GBS+ (Group B Strep Infection) or C-section "Caesar" mothers. Now don't feel bad about yourself if you're going through this, it's not a reflection on you or of you. Many others have been through this and pulled through. I'm hoping to bring some value to your time today by sharing what I learned. Mastitis happens when there is a stasis (lack of movement) of milk, a blocked duct, or an overgrowth of bacteria, or unfortunately sometimes your baby isn't latching on quite well to suckle out enough milk (Professional help available at Tresilian and Karitane for mothers in Sydney, Australia) Finally if you're on the fence about the benefits of probiotics and whether that course of antibiotics given during your labor or C-section is to be balanced by probiotics, I give you permission to start! The benefits of the small investment in some probiotic capsules far outweigh the negatives of delaying and include: incomplete maturation of your baby's immune system, increased colic in your baby, increase risk for atopic conditions in your baby: eczema, hay fever, asthma) and on and on. ----------------------------------- Home Deliveries to the Inner West Sydney from $10, save the number: (02) 8068 7131 ----------------------------------- Shop Online for delivery or Click’n’Collect now LIVE https://canterburylatenightpharmacy.orderup.com.au/ ----------------------------------- Also find us at: Instagram: instagram.com/thecornerchemist Twitter: twitter.com/canterburylnp Facebook: facebook.com/canterburylatenight Website/Blog: canterburylatenightpharmacy.com.au/blogs/ ----------------------------------- --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thehealthtuneup/message
