Agatha Christie, born in 1890 in Torquay, Devon, England, was a pioneering and prolific writer who revolutionized the crime fiction genre. Best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections featuring iconic characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Christie became one of the most influential authors of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. Her personal life was marked by a mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926 and two marriages, including a long and happy union with archaeologist Max Mallowan. Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1971, Christie remains the best-selling fiction writer of all time, with over two billion copies of her books sold worldwide. Christie's innovative writing style, characterized by clever plots, intricate mysteries, and surprising twists, set her apart from other authors in the genre. She masterfully employed techniques such as the unreliable narrator and sudden plot twists, which challenged readers' assumptions and kept them engaged until the very end. By constantly pushing the boundaries of the genre, Christie established herself as the undisputed Queen of Crime. John Truby, in his book "The Anatomy of Genres," distinguishes the Detective Genre from the closely related Crime and Gangster Genres. He argues that detective novels focus more on the investigation itself, delving into the criminal's identity and motivations, rather than solely on the punishment of wrongdoing and the maintenance of social order. This emphasis on understanding the "why" behind the crime adds psychological depth to detective stories, as exemplified in Christie's "The Witness for the Prosecution." Truby also notes that in the Gangster Genre, the criminal is often portrayed as the hero, a departure from traditional roles in detective and crime fiction. While "The Witness for the Prosecution" does not strictly fall into this category, it presents a morally ambiguous situation where readers' sympathies may be divided, highlighting Christie's skill in crafting multifaceted characters and thought-provoking narratives. "The Witness for the Prosecution" showcases the vulnerabilities of the legal system and explores the ethical quandaries faced by solicitors as they balance their professional obligations with their own moral principles. Christie's manipulation of societal expectations surrounding gender roles in 1920s Britain adds an extra layer of complexity to the story, subverting traditional portrayals of women as passive and submissive in the face of male authority. Christie's gender role reversal serves as a powerful narrative device, compelling readers to reassess their assumptions about characters and their motivations. Her skillful use of societal expectations adds depth to the story's twists, making them all the more impactful and thought-provoking without relying on conventional tropes. On this episode of JHLT: The Podcast, the JHLT Digital Media Editors explore two studies from the May issue of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Digital Media Editor David Schibilsky, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Freiburg, Germany, hosts this episode.   First, Dr. Schibilsky and Digital Media Editor Erika Lease, MD, interview their first guest, Helen A. Hannan, the podcast's first-ever undergraduate pre-medical guest, from the University of Michigan. Helen was the lead author on the study “Racial and Gender Disparities in Transplantation of Hepatitis C+ Hearts and Lungs.” The study noted that prior research in utilization of kidneys from donors with Hepatitis C had shown disparities due to gender and education—and wanted to see if this was the case in heart and lung donors as well.   Drs. Schibilsky and Lease chat with Helen about the findings of the study, including some of the interesting differences shown between heart and lung recipients, and the ramifications for better patient discussions at the clinical level.   Next, Dr. Schibilsky and Digital Media Editor Marty Tam, MD, interview their next guest, Lauren Truby, MD, of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Truby is the podcast's first return guest, having appeared on the show near the end of 2021. This time, she's featured as first author on the study “Metabolomic profiling during ex situ normothermic perfusion before heart transplantation defines patterns of substrate utilization and correlates with markers of allograft injury.” The paper explores cardiac metabolism of donor hearts during recovery using an ex situ normothermic perfusion system (NRP).   Dr. Truby provides an in depth look at the project's logistics—which she calls a “labor of love”—its multi-point findings, and what's next in this line of research.   Follow along at www.jhltonline.org/current, or, if you're an ISHLT member, access your Journal membership at www.ishlt.org/jhlt.   Don't already get the Journal and want to read along? Simply put, the storytelling game is won by mastering the structure of genres. The Anatomy of Genres: How Story Forms Explain the Way the World Works is the legendary writing teacher John Truby's step-by-step guide to understanding and using the basic building blocks of the story world. He details the three ironclad rules of successful genre writing, and analyzes more than a dozen major genres and the essential plot events, or “beats,” that define each of them. As he shows, the ability to combine these beats in the right way is what separates stories that sell from those that don't. Truby also reveals how a single story can combine elements of different genres, and how the best writers use this technique to craft unforgettable stories that stand out from the crowd.Just as Truby's first book, The Anatomy of Story, changed the way writers develop stories, The Anatomy of Genres will enhance their quality and expand the impact they have on the world.Enjoy my conversation with John Truby.

Frictionless Marketing

Mark Truby is chief communications officer at the Ford Motor Company where he leads all global communications and public relations activities. This includes building the company's reputation globally and helping to lead communications that reach Ford's external and internal audiences, including customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, news media, communities, governments, and policymakers. He reports directly to  Ford CEO Jim Farley. Mark is also the proud father of 3 boys and was named to the 2022 PRWeek Power List. Prior to joining Ford, Mark was an award-winning reporter and editor at The Detroit News, which is a big part of Mark's executive origin story. Mark's journalism background gave him a much more story-centric approach to comms, which is evident in a lot of Ford's marketing.  Mark dives deep into this, his career history, and tells us a great story about the months-long process of getting to President Joe Biden to drive the Ford F-150 at a recent launch. Without further ado, here is Ford CCO Mark Truby in conversation with Lippe Taylor CEO Paul Dyer.  Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Mark.  1. Learn journalism. Many comms leaders have stated that journalism is the most useful form of writing to learn. As a form, it teaches conciseness and the inverse pyramid concept of stating the facts up front and then expanding as you move forward, which structurally applies to just about anything. In Mark's case, his journalism background was the foundation that he built his comms career on because he not only learned all about Ford but understood journalists and how to reach them because he was one himself. This proved to be a fruitful point of leverage in his PR career because, overall, being a journalist taught Mark to always look for the story, which is what editors are always trying to uncover in every article and every pitch. More on this in the next point.  2. Make art, not ads. A lot of Ford's approach to marketing under Mark's leadership has been very story-centric and leaned more into entertainment than marketing. Ford launched a fascinating podcast series all about what happened to the Bronco, a long and elaborate story that could only be told on a long-form medium like podcasting. Ford also put out multiple documentaries, none of which felt like advertising but worked beautifully as engaging stories that elegantly showcased the brand. The benefit of creating this kind of content is that it never goes away - unlike news cycles, the documentaries and podcasts keep streaming and remain indelible.  3. Connect the past with the future.  A big challenge for heritage brands is leveraging their legacy while remaining relevant. In Mark's case, he's well aware that Ford will never seem as new and cutting-edge as Tesla, and that's ok - Tesla will never have the 100+ year history that Ford has. In bridging the gap between your brand's legacy and relevance, Mark says it's a matter of connecting the past with the future, embracing where your brand has been but, most importantly, articulating where it's going in a concise narrative.   Thanks for listening! In a bombshell revelation, a report published by Bloomberg says that Ford may be making the most significant operational change yet in response to electrics: cutting thousands of jobs.Bloomberg cites unnamed sources familiar with the matter who says the Blue Oval plans to reduce headcount by 8,000 over the next few weeks. The sources say the cuts intend to target the Ford unit responsible for producing internal combustion engine vehicles, along with those in salaried positions. The report points out that Ford currently employs around 31,000 salaried workers, the bulk of whom are in the US.Bloomberg cites a statement from Ford where the automaker's Chief Communications Officer Mark Truby declined to comment on the cuts, but does say it's focused on operational strategies with EV growth in mind. “As part of this,” said Truby, “we have laid out clear targets to lower our cost structure to ensure we are lean and fully competitive with the best in the industry.”This spring, Ford CEO Jim Farley also unveiled a plan to cut $3 billion in costs from the company, an initiative that followed comments earlier in the year where Farley declared that Ford has “too many people.”The company also made headlines amid a recent restructuring, where Ford split the company's ambitions into one focused on EVs – titled Model e – and one dedicated to gas powered vehicles – titled Ford Blue. During a town hall meeting in March detailing the changes, it was reported that executive chairman Bill Ford told an employee concerned about risk that a bigger risk would be to not make a bold change when the world is changing so fast.

When Joanne was at school she would never have believed one day she'd become an incredible florist with her own school. She didn't even know then she had a passion for flowers. But by listening to that niggling voice, it took her to exactly where she is meant to be. She has now built her own business with a huge following, which has developed and shaped around her family too. Joanne's been a finalist in the UK Wedding Awards for best wedding florist and her work is regularly featured in national magazines. She may work alongside huge designer names, but Joanne remains humble. She's hardworking, honest and her optimism is a joy to listen to.

#028 - Florist Joanne Truby shares her small business journey. Moving from the corporate world to study floristry, she set up her wedding and event design company in 2012. She now also runs masterclasses and taster days, teaching how to create floral designs in her natural, English country garden style. After her A levels, she worked in the e-commerce departments at Heals and River Island. Then whilst travelling through Central America, she decided that she wanted to do a degree in something creative. She signed up for Floral Design & Event Management, and fell completely head over heels in love with flowers. In 2012, once she'd finished studying, she created the wedding flowers for a friend. Concentrating on weddings and events, her business grew organically initially with the aid of taking part in collaborative styled photoshoots, which were featured in magazines and on blogs. And later, her business expanded from using social media including Instagram.Joanne discusses her photography journey and having her designs being featured in a book about wedding flowers. Plus she shares the impact of the pandemic on her business, describing how she made the most of her time during lockdown. Listening to this episode, you'll hear how passionate Joanne is about teaching and the transition that her students achieve when spending time with her. At the end of the podcast, you'll discover her practical tips, which I'm sure you'll find very inspiring. Show notes are available on the My Small Business & Me website: https://mysmallbusinessandme.com/episode28

Kobie McKinzie’s guardian, Will Truby, has heard all of the talk about how little some are willing to invest in the knowledge that McKinzie committed to play at Oklahoma. While Lincoln Riley and his staff are working hard to close out the 2020 recruiting cycle and shifting gears toward earning verbal commitments and, eventually, signings from members of the 2021 class, McKinzie is just a sophomore in high school and a rising junior in recruiting. Means, as a class of 2022 prospect, nearly two years has to pass before he can put pen to paper and sign a national letter of intent. His process is still only beginning, and he’s changed his mind once already. Before the end of his sophomore season on the gridiron, he reopened his recruitment after initially pledging to play at his native Texas Tech. And it’s not as if many who follow OU football recruiting efforts aren’t aware of how a teenager’s mind can change. Notably, 2020 running back Jase McClellan ended his two-year courtship with OU to flip to Alabama just as he became eligible to sign his letter of intent. Truby said he understood why some might question McKinzie’s commitment, but they shouldn’t. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're talking with Pete Truby, founder of Salazon Chocolate. From working at Mrs. Meyer's when it was in its early stages, to being one of the first employees at Honest Tea, Pete has been a sponge - soaking up knowledge and information when it comes to startups, entrepreneurship, and the natural foods industry. Today, you'll get to hear how he's applied that knowledge in bootstrapping Salazon into a brand with national distribution. In our interview, you're going to learn: Why Pete believes branding is equally, or more, important than product value What the pros and cons are of taking outside investment money How to compete in-store with competitors that have deeper pockets than you And a whole lot more...
