"In those days, a lot of young people took up arms, while others lived long enough to become a doctor", he says. A popular political voice, Waheed leads the youth wing of People's Democratic Party (PDP) today. Waheed thinks that Kashmir still carries the wounds of 1947 partition when this princely state was a point of contention between India and Pakistan. He laments the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits; and their slow disappearance from the collective memory of Kashmiris. He also talks about PDP's political agenda, and changing attitude of Kashmiris in recent years.

I am in conversation with Prashant Pandita, a Kashmiri Pandit and the author of bookThe Jehlum Boys where we talk about writing a nail-biting thriller that thrives on friendship and is divided by the tensions and larger political disputes in a historically disputed land-Kashmir.As they say, the friendships that have been developed and nurtured during childhood are something that has a deep impact on any individual's life as they are what have witnessed the phases that nobody else has.A Kashmiri pandit and a Muslim both are based in Kashmir. Generally, if I tell you just this plot with all the Kashmir stories and movies around either you will expect something on similar lines or you will expect the cliche. Kashmiri Pandits and people of other faiths have gone through a lot with respect to the exodus that happened in 1990.The story is heavy and through the conversations between the characters, a lot of learnings are offered about life. Kashmiri Pandits, many of whom were given government jobs and brought to the Valley a decade ago, have started to flee following targeted killings of their colleagues by terrorists. Not just Kashmiri Pandits, but other Hindus have also been killed. As have Muslims. In August 2019, when Article 370 was reduced to a shell, and the state of Jammu & Kashmir whittled down to a Union Territory, the Central government promised to turn it into the most developed state in the country within five years. Long a part of the BJP's ideological agenda, Home Minister Amit Shah said on the floor of Parliament at the time that Article 370 was the biggest hurdle in the path of normalcy in Kashmir. Where do things stand now as minorities flee and terrorist killings continue? Guest: Air Vice-Marshal Kapil Kak (retd.) is part of a group of concerned citizens regarding Jammu and Kashmir Host: Amit Baruah, Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu Edited by Ranjani Srinivasan
Targeted killings in the Kashmir valley have become a cause of concern lately. In episode 1013 of #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta talks about the recent reports of targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits & other minorities and what they indicate about the changing nature of terrorism in the Valley.
With a spate of killings of Kashmiri Hindus, complete failure of India's Kashmir strategy is obvious. Yet, in spite of being flagged repeatedly, it continues appeasing separatist sympathisers and rewarding them, and ignoring nationalists both in Kashmir and Jammu. It is a Shah Faesal friendly government, says Sanjay Dixit.

Vivek Agnihotri's new film - The Kashmir Files that focuses on the events surrounding the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits between the late 80's and early the 90's, has been triggering a lot of responses from day one. It's also perhaps one of the few Bollywood films releases of the Covid-era that continues to be at the box office for 10 days now with steady earnings. For comparison, Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt that was released in February 25 earned Rs 117 crores domestically in three weeks. But recently, after raking up its highest one-day collection yet on 20 March Sunday, The Kashmir Files' total earnings now stand at Rs 167 crores roughly. This is just in 10 days! But at the same, Vivek Agnihotri's film has sparked a political storm with debates around what the film depicts and how polarized its reception has been on the ground. While some feel that it's about time that the painful story of Kashmiri pandits be shared with the country unabashedly, others point out that in the process of dramatization, the movie stray from facts and ends up vilifying and generalizing Kashmiri Muslims. But amid this cacophony of arguments and counter-arguments, a big question is, who is the film for? Does it serve the purpose of representing the plight of Kashmiri pandits, or does it get politically co-opted? In this episode of The Big Story, I'll be joined by Aditya Raj Kaul, the Executive Editor of TV9 Network and Dr Suneem Khan, a Medical Doctor with CRPF at Srinagar who describes himself as a cinephile. We'll hear from them their views of what the film does and doesn't. Tune in! The Kashmir Files has achieved the great function of bringing the focus of the nation on the gruesome crime that took place in the 1990s. However, the complete contours are much wider and given in the book 'Unbreaking India'. Is this now the time to take the next logical step and declare the crimes committed against Kashmir Hindus and Pandits leading to the 6th and 7th exodus in independent India as genocide. Sushil Pandit and Dr. Ajay Chrungoo join Sanjay Dixit to discuss.
A short and touching story throwing light on what Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims went through during the 1989 exodus. As the film ‘The Kashmir Files' is making its mark and drawing attention to the issue, we present a short story, Swarg Se Jannat by Rohit Srivastav, which shows what the first generation has experienced since the tragedy with under a slightly different lens. Dr. Rajat Mitra goes deep into how the reactions of those killed in the Valley once again talk about humanity of Islam and how the terrorists are not being true Muslims. Does this reflect a genuine ignorance of the doctrines of Islam or true Zimmi attitude deeply ingrained by generations of trauma? Sanjay Dixit hosts Dr. Mitra.
A Kashmiri Pandit chemist Mohan Lal Bindroo, a Sikh school principal Supinder Kaur and her Hindu colleague from Jammu have been killed in targeted attacks in Srinagar recently. A large number of Muslims too have been killed in such attacks, laid at the door of The Resistance Front, widely believed to be a front of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Many Hindus who stayed back after the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s are scared and have been advised by the authorities to stay inside their houses. An estimated 300 Pandits have left. This is possibly the most serious crisis in the Valley after the BJP Government at the Centre abrogated Article 370 and sliced the state of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories in 2019. In this podcast, we explore the current situation and the possible reasons behind it. Guest: Mohammed Sayeed Malik, veteran journalist Host: Amit Baruah, Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu
As the hon'ble Supreme Court lists a letter petition within 24 hours, questions are bound to be asked about its extreme unwillingness to list properly drafted PILs and extreme unwillingness to take them up in cases relating to West Bengal post-poll violence, Palghar lynching of Sadhus, and even genocide of Kashmiri Pandits. Shouldn't the PIL jurisdiction in all Courts be more transparent?
In this edition of #ThePrintUninterrupted, Mayor of Srinagar and Apni party member, Junaid Azim Mattu, tells ThePrint's Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra that recent attacks on Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs by Pakistan-supported terrorists will further disrupt the process of their rehabilitation. A multidimensional approach, he said, by Jammu and Kashmir as well as the community can make the process easier and help bring normalcy back to Kashmir.

Besides many other reasons cited for nullification of Art. 370, one of the main reason given was to end the mafia raj in the Valley. We will be celebrating Swami Lakshmanjoo's Birthday on the 9th of May. You are invited to join us, register here. We hope you have already registered your space for the four-day study retreat following the Birthday Celebrations. The following excerpts highlight some of the experiences of the renown Saint, Swami Vivekananda, when he visited Kashmir in 1898. ARANYAMAL* RAINA The Sweet Mother Aranyamal Raina was the wife of Pandit Narayan Das Raina. Pandit Narayan Das was the first among the Kashmiri Pandits to speak and write English, wear Western clothes and ride a cycle. Both Aranyamal and Pandit Narayan Das were devotees of Swami Ram Ji, a saint and the greatest exponent of Shaivism. Pandit Narayan Das also adored Swami Vivekananda. In the year 1898, on his second visit to Kashmir, Swami Vivekananda once visited their home at Namchibal, Fateh Kadal; he was showered with flowers and garlanded. The Pandits praised Swamiji’s preaching Vedanta in the West and wanted to hear it from him. Swami Vivekananda recited some verses from the Mundakopanishad and explained them to their joy. Aranyamal cooked all the dishes for lunch with great care. Swamiji praised her payasam (rice pudding). Before leaving Pandit Narayan Das requested Swamiji to bless his wife who had a severe headache that no treatment could cure. Swamiji was silent for a while and then placed his hand on her which cured her completely. Also, the birth of the famous Shiva Yogi Swami Lakshmanjoo was foretold by Swamiji. The truthfulness, steadfastness, and devotion moved Swamiji who commented suddenly, ‘Rainaji, the blessings of the Lord is showering on you. You have changed your home to a temple. This place is best suited for the birth of a divine child.” After nine years, Swami Lakshmanjoo was born after 17 years of their first child. From his childhood, Lakshmanjoo was immersed in meditation and Samadhi. He embraced sannyasa and become the guiding force of many in India and abroad. He was the most revered teacher, a Shiva Scholar, Guru, and an authority on Kashmir Shaivism. As predicted by Swami Vivekananda, their house later became an Ashram, famously known as Shri Rama Shaiva (Trika) Ashrama. Aranyamal was simple, devoted, and was dedicated to the service of monks. She would request Pandit Narayan Das to invited monks and would feed them with respect. She also donated liberally to the poor and suffering. In 1900, when a severe storm destroyed life in Kashmir, Aranyamal supplied food for the suffering. Author Chander M Bhat Reference: 1. Swami Vivekananda: The Great Inspirer, Part 1 2. Swami Vivekananda in Kashmir This is an excerpt from Scoop News by Rakesh Kumar Pandit As the grateful nation celebrated the year 2013 as the 150th birth anniversary year of Swami Vivekananda and on 12th January 2014, the grateful nation will celebrate the 151st birth anniversary of this Prophet of Modern India. I take this opportunity to highlight some of the important events of his Kashmir visit. During his stay in Kashmir, Swami Vivekananda was in a different world altogether. He was deeply touched by the beauty of Kashmir. Swami Vivekananda visited Kashmir twice and it was on 10th September 1897, when the lotus feet of this great saint touched the beautiful and pious land of Rishis, once called as Reshver. His first visit to Kashmir was short and was not so eventful although he visited some of the places of religious and historic importance. People from all spheres of life like Sadhus, Kashmiri Pandits, students, officials went to meet him. The second visit of Swami Vivekanand to Kashmir valley was more eventful. This time a party of Europeans was accompanying him. Prominent among them was Sister Nivedita (Margret Nobl...

We got unexpectedly delayed in releasing this episode, but we are so glad to share with you our discussion! In this episode, SASI collective members -- Azad Ali, Muriyum, Nangeli and Sheila – talk about SASI’s biggest lessons and challenges while supporting Kashmiri liberation over the past year. We talk about our own personal journeys, our own decolonial awakening about Kashmir. When did you realize that Kashmir is not a part (integral or otherwise) of India or Pakistan? How does liberalism feed into a narrative of the Indian army as a necessary, benevolent force of good? We talk about Bollywood movies like Mission Kashmir (an otherwise forgettable movie) that pushed a larger construction of this “kind army men” even as the military commits atrocities with impunity. We also talk about the counter-arguments that we have all heard thousands of times on the question of the Kashmiri Pandits.
In this episode, we talk to Tapasya about Kashmir whose family has had to leave Kashmir during the late 80's and early 90's. We talk about the different store she has heard while growing, why does she support Azadi movement and various other things related to Kashmiri Pandits.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit stood in support of Kangana Ranaut and applauded her decision to make a film on Kashmiri Pandits.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has a savage reply for those who are boycotting his recently released film 'Shikara' based on exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the year 1990.
Here we list down some reasons, why you should watch Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s love letter from Kashmir, Shikara - The Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest directorial venture opens with the caveat that it’s a work of fiction based on true events. Also, we are told that the people we see on the screen at the refugee camps aren't just actors but actual refugees who were displaced and rendered homeless during one of the most tragic chapters in our country’s history - the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. It is Chopra’s most personal work so far and also his most restrained. The screenplay by him, along with Rahul Pandita and Abhijat Joshi weaves a tale of love and longing. An ode to Kashmir, to all the goodness, that it once stood for. Tune in to the podcast! Music: Big Bang Fuzz VO: RJ Stutee
On the night of 19 January 1990, all hell broke loose in Kashmir — a place many think of as ‘Heaven on Earth’. Several mosques in Srinagar played the Azaadi slogans, asking the Indian security forces to quit: ‘aey jabiro, aey zalimo, Kashmir hamara chhor dou’ . They didn’t. Those who were in barracks and bunkers and at the borders were brought down to kitchens and bedrooms by the deafening chants. It triggered the exodus of the minority Kashmiri Pandits — who had started to move out in smaller numbers months prior. They call it ‘Holocaust Day’. The following day, CRPF machine guns left over 50 Kashmiri Muslim demonstrators dead and scores injured in a peaceful procession at Gawkadal. Kashmiri Muslims remember 21 January as ‘the beginning of the genocide’ — ‘the first massacre’.These were turning points in Kashmir’s post-1947 political and cultural history that changed its socio-political landscape. But the metamorphosis didn’t happen overnight. Tune in to the podcast for the full story! India’s consul general in New York, Sandeep Chakravarty is in the news for wrong reasons. In a video that surfaced online, he linked the future of Kashmiri Pandits to that of Israel and Jews. By drawing an analogy between India and Israel traditionally, India has opposed any form of Israeli occupation in Palestinian territories. Though his statement has been made at a private event, such comments from an official functionary don’t bode well for India’s image, India needs to act to contain the damage. Mint Views Daily Dispatch brings you scenes from the Mint edit table where ideas are mooted, discussed and debated before they make it to the coveted editorial page of the paper.

Dr Happymon Jacob speaks with Siddhartha Gigoo (Author of ‘Long Dream of Home’ and ‘A Fistful of Earth’) about the social and political circumstances in which Kashmiri Pandits had to leave Kashmir. Mr Gigoo narrates his first experience of persecution as a young boy and the escalation of such instances from harmless banter to organized exodus. He asserts that successive governments have failed to rehabilitate Kashmiri Pandits to their ‘homeland’, and have merely used their cause for electoral gains. Mr Gigoo laments at the loss of identity, dignity and a sense of belonging that Kashmiri Pandits, now settled across the world have experienced. The Kashmiri Pandit mind is now torn between deceitful hope and a dissipating longing for return.

On this week’s episode, we have Aarti Tikoo Singh, senior assistant editor at The Times of India, joining Abhinandan Sekhri, Madhu Trehan and Manisha Pande. Abhinandan kicks off the podcast with a discussion about Kashmiri Pandits, and their association with Kashmir. The conversation then moves to Vijay Mallya, and his recent claims of an alleged meeting with the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley. The panel talks about the credibility of his claims, and implications of such a meeting. Manisha then brings up The Indian Express’ interview with Maoist leader Pahad Singh, and Madhu asks what a journalist must keep in mind while interviewing someone in police custody. She shares her experience of interviewing Yakub Memon, and how she went about getting the interview with him. The panel also discusses the Kerala nun’s rape case, and why the bishop accused of committing the crime hasn’t been arrested yet. In addition, the team talks about faith, discusses how statements can be considered sacrilegious, and why Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh wants to pass a ‘blasphemy law’ that would convict people who make fun of religion or religious sentiments. The controversial US Open women’s final was also debated. The panel discussed whether Serena Williams stole Naomi Osaka’s moment by alleging sexism and unfair treatment by the umpire. The panel also talks about the controversial cartoon by Mark Knight. Weighing in, Aarti says that the artist is entitled to his own views and his depiction of Serena isn’t racist. Forced migration is one of the critical issues of our time. 1 in 110 people in the world is currently displaced because of conflict, violence or persecution, or natural and environmental disasters. More common among those who are already vulnerable, forced migration also often creates tensions in the countries or regions that host such migrants. In this episode of the Global Futures podcast we talk about displacement in the South Asian region. In this age of radicalism and polarization we are seeing the religious persecution and displacement of the Rohingya from Myanmar to surrounding countries such as India, as well as increased insecurity around internally displaced people within India, such as the Kashmiri Pandits, who fled violence in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir during the beginning of the 1990s and whose future and status remain unclear. Our guest is journalist Aarti Tikoo Singh, senior assistant editor at the Times of India. She has worked as a reporter and editor for more than 15 years, focusing on issues of conflict, war and terror. She was born and grew up in the conflict-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir and returned many years later to report on the politics, violence, governance, and human stories that have shaped the conflict. With her we discuss the history and the future of forced displacement in South Asia. How do questions of religion and identity come into play? And most importantly, with the rise of extreme thinking, how can we break the vicious cycle of intolerance?
Aadit Kapadia and Sunanda Vashisht discuss the refusal of resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits with Author and activist Sushil Pandit. They also discuss the debate over Janeu and the Nehruvian angle to it.
Thinking ahead: displacement, transition, solutions (Forced Migration Review 52)
The continuation of the predicament of those who remain displaced from the Kashmir Valley since 1989 results from the unintended consequences of past policies.
Aadit Kapadia, Pramod Kumar Buravalli and Sunanda Vashisht discuss the denial of Pakistani visa to Anupam Kher and his apolitical activism. And, the leftist apathy towards Kashmiri Pandits. Next topic was on KCR sweeping Hyderabad Corporation Elections and his unquestioned stature in Telangana. Also, about Chandra Babu Naidu and his travails in the residual state of Andhra Pradesh. This is followed by a discussion on the utter devastation caused by Islamists terror in Africa. Finally, we discussed the results from the concluded Iowa Caucuses and possibility of Trump-Rubio ticket for US President.
In the 1990s nearly 250,000 people were displaced by violence in India. More than 20 years later the question for them is whether the responses to their displacement so far can form the basis for long-term solutions for their protracted displacement.
