In this special episode of ThePrint WorldView, Dr. Swasti Rao, foreign policy expert and consulting editor, is joined by Kabir Taneja, Deputy Director of Strategic Studies and Fellow for the Middle East at the Observer Research Foundation. The conversation delves into the strategic and ideological forces behind the Pahalgam terror attack, examining how groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Al-Qaeda, ISKP, Hamas, and the Taliban continue to influence the region. Kabira Taneja unpacks the complex web of transnational networks, their evolving tactics, and their reliance on modern funding channels like crypto. The episode critically assesses India's counter-terror response, especially in light of Operation Sindoor, and highlights the limitations of diplomatic tools like dossier diplomacy. It also questions the effectiveness of international frameworks such as RATS under the SCO, suggesting that India's approach may need to move beyond multilateral rhetoric toward more assertive, sustained strategic measures. #pahalgam #indiapakistan #indpak #indopak #pakistan #indianarmy #modi

pWotD Episode 2930: 2025 India–Pakistan standoff Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 207,232 views on Saturday, 10 May 2025 our article of the day is 2025 India–Pakistan standoff. On 23 April 2025, a standoff emerged between India and Pakistan, which was sparked by the 2025 Pahalgam attack, a terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, killing 27 people, including 25 Hindu tourists, a Christian tourist, and a local Muslim, as well as injuring more than 20 others. The Resistance Front (TRF) initially claimed responsibility for the attack. Armed skirmishes between India and Pakistan were reported along the Line of Control (LoC) beginning on 24 April, raising fears of further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. A ceasefire was announced on 10 May 2025 from 16:30 PKT/17:00 IST following an agreement between India and Pakistan. However, Pakistan violated the ceasefire. The standoffs were followed by a diplomatic crisis which emerged between the two countries, as India accused Pakistan of sponsoring the attack. India initiated the expulsion of Pakistani diplomats, recalled its own diplomatic staff, suspended visa services, closed its borders, and announced its withdrawal from the Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan quickly denied any involvement and instead urged for an international inquiry, which Delhi promptly rejected. Pakistan initially responded with trade restrictions, closure of airspace and border crossings, and suspension of the Shimla Agreement. India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) also strongly urged Indian citizens to avoid travelling to Pakistan, and called on those currently in the country to return at the earliest opportunity.Between 24 April and 6 May, Pakistan and India engaged in skirmishes including cross-border firing and intermittent artillery shelling. On 7 May 2025, India launched missile strikes on Pakistan, codenamed Operation Sindoor. According to India, the missile strikes targeted the militant groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to Pakistan, the Indian strikes targeted civilian areas, including mosques, killing 31 Pakistani civilians. In return, Pakistan said they had downed a number of Indian jets and damaged Indian infrastructure. There are a number of misinformation campaigns across both the countries' media outlets following the strike. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 09:42 UTC on Sunday, 11 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2025 India–Pakistan standoff on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Brian.

In the early hours of Wednesday, May 7—well past midnight—India launched a precise, 23-minute military operation targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. These locations were reportedly strongholds of two of the world’s most notorious terror groups: Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Indian Rafale jets deployed SCALP and HAMMER missiles in the strikes, in what appeared to be a retaliatory act not only against the recent Pahalgam attack, but against a long history of terror incidents—Red Fort, Parliament, Mumbai train blasts, Pathankot, Uri, Pulwama—stretching back to the Kargil conflict. According to Indian government sources, over 100 militants were killed in the strikes. Pakistan launched a retaliatory attack using drones and missiles, reportedly aimed at as many as 15 cities across northern India. The Indian government stated that all incoming threats were intercepted, primarily using its S-400 air defence systems. India then escalated further, crossing deeper into Pakistani territory than ever before. It neutralized an air defence radar installation in Lahore and conducted operations in sites at Sialkot and even near Islamabad. This marks a significant shift in India’s military posture—from punitive strikes to potentially pre-emptive warfare. As the lines blur between militants, soldiers, and civilians, critical questions emerge: Is this the new normal in India’s security doctrine? How long can Pakistan withstand a prolonged conflict, economically and militarily? Will China’s support to Pakistan—currently limited to weapons supply—expand into something more direct? And, crucially, what diplomatic or military paths remain open for de-escalation before the region tips into broader instability? India said it targeted terrorist infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed and that no Pakistani military facilities have been targeted, while Pakistan said India targeted civilian areas (including mosques) and claimed that Indian strikes killed 26 Pakistani civilians, including children, and injured more than 46 people. Pakistan stated that it had retaliated against the Indian strikes, claiming to have downed a number of Indian jets and inflicting damage on Indian infrastructure. India said Pakistani cross-border artillery fire killed multiple civilians, including children.India said that it had targeted terrorist camps across nine locations including Bahawalpur, which is the hub of the Maulana Masood Azhar led Jaish-e-Mohammed, a U. N. designated terrorist organization, Subhan Allah camp, an alleged hub of Pakistan-based jihadist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Muridke near Lahore, a hub of the Hafiz Saeed-led Lashkar-e-Taiba, another U. N. designated terror group. Masood Azhar said that 10 members of his family, including 5 children, were killed in India's airstrikes on the group's headquarters at the Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur. The Indian strikes were in response to the 22 April terror attack by militants in Indian Kashmir killing 28 civilians, mostly Hindu tourists. The attack on tourists triggered the 2025 India–Pakistan standoff, which is part of the broader Kashmir conflict. India accused Pakistan of supporting the militants, which Pakistan denied.According to the Indian media and government officials, there has been an ongoing misinformation campaign after the Indian strikes by pro-Pakistani social media handles, including claims of targeting the Indian airbase at Srinagar, destroying Indian Brigade Headquarters and downing Indian jets which India denies.Similarly, DAWN also reported misinformation from pro-India social media handles, with Indian accounts claiming conflict pictures from Gaza and Lebanon to be from Indian strikes on the Pakistani border city of Sialkot. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:33 UTC on Thursday, 8 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2025 India–Pakistan strikes on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

1. Operation Sindoor: India Strikes Back In a dramatic pre-dawn move on May 8, India launched Operation Sindoor, striking nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including key Lashkar and Jaish hubs in Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad. The operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians on April 22. Executed using fighter jets, loitering munitions, cruise missiles, and tri-service precision, the strikes were conducted entirely from Indian airspace and targeted only terrorist infrastructure. India described the operation as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” avoiding Pakistani military installations while showcasing significant firepower and coordination across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. 2. Pakistan Responds: “This Won't Go Unanswered” Reacting to the strikes, Pakistan's military issued a stern warning. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated, “India's temporary pleasure will be replaced by enduring grief,” vowing retaliation at a time and place of its choosing. Pakistan confirmed strikes in three locations and mobilized its air force, while closing its airspace for 48 hours. Tensions along the Line of Control have since intensified, with reports of heavy artillery exchanges. 3. IAF Combat Drills & Civil Defence Readiness Parallel to Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force began a major combat readiness exercise across the western sector, involving fighter jets, drones, helicopters, AWACS, and refuellers in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, and UP. Though termed “routine,” the timing—post-Pahalgam—adds strategic weight. Simultaneously, India conducted nationwide civil defence drills across 244 districts, the largest since 1971. These drills tested air raid sirens, evacuation plans, blackout protocols, and communications, sending a clear message: India is prepared for all scenarios. ⸻ 4. India, UK Seal Historic Free Trade Deal In a major diplomatic win, India and the UK signed a long-awaited Free Trade Agreement after three years of negotiations. The deal unlocks a $45 billion trade corridor, addresses visa access for Indian professionals, and introduces the Double Contribution Convention to ease social security obligations for cross-border workers. While hailed as a boost for textiles, automotive, and seafood exports, concerns remain over the UK's upcoming carbon tax that could hurt Indian steel and cement exports. Still, the FTA is expected to double bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, marking a new chapter in India's global trade diplomacy. 5. SEBI Exposes IPO Scam at Synoptics In a first-of-its-kind action, SEBI has cracked down on Synoptics Technologies and its merchant banker, First Overseas Capital Ltd, for misusing over ₹19 crore from IPO proceeds. The money was diverted to shell entities a day before listing, with ₹2 crore used to buy Synoptics shares and artificially inflate demand. SEBI called the misuse “shocking and stunning,” banned FOCL from handling any new IPOs, and barred Synoptics' promoters from the market. A deeper probe has been launched into 20 other IPOs managed by FOCL. The message is clear: tampering with public money won't go unpunished. 6. India to Overtake Japan as 4th Largest Economy According to the IMF's April 2025 Outlook, India is projected to surpass Japan in 2025 with a GDP of $4.187 trillion, becoming the world's fourth-largest economy. This rise reflects India's resilience, reforms, and growing domestic demand—even as growth cools to 6.2% in FY25. Challenges persist: trade tensions, including recent US tariffs, and slowing momentum may test the climb. But India's long-term trajectory remains upward, with Germany next in its sights.

According to Defence PRO Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal, the firing occurred between April 27-28, 2025, initiated by Pakistan Army posts. Indian troops responded promptly and effectively. Thankfully, there were no casualties, and further details are being verified. The firing follows a recent Brigade Commander meeting on April 10, highlighting ongoing tensions along the LoC.The Indian government has banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including major outlets like Dawn News and Geo News, for spreading provocative and misleading content following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommended the ban after the attack, which claimed 26 lives. These channels, with a collective 63.08 million followers, were found disseminating false narratives against India. Additionally, India strongly protested the BBC India referring to terrorists as "militants," signaling heightened scrutiny of media reporting amid rising tensions. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly convened a special session, adopting a resolution condemning attempts to disrupt communal harmony. Moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, the three-page resolution emphasized defeating those aiming to destabilize the region. It called the attack a direct assault on Kashmiriyat, India's constitutional values, and national unity. The resolution also cautioned the media and society against being manipulated by those inflaming public emotions through inflammatory rhetoric.Jammu & Kashmir CM Condemns Pahalgam Terror AttackJammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people on April 22. In a heartfelt speech during the special session of the assembly, Abdullah expressed deep regret, calling the attack the largest in Baisaran in 21 years. He acknowledged his failure to protect the tourists and apologized to the victims' families. “As the host, it was my responsibility to ensure their safety, and I couldn't,” he said, expressing sorrow for the tragic loss of lives in his region. The United States has expressed concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. In a statement, a US State Department spokesperson urged both nations to work toward a “responsible solution” to the evolving situation. The attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Pakistan's Lashkar-e-Taiba, killed 26 people and wounded several others. While condemning the attack, the US affirmed solidarity with India but refrained from directly criticizing Pakistan, maintaining diplomatic engagement with both governments. That's all for today. Exactly a month into his new term, President Donald Trump's latest major pick, Kash Patel, has been appointed as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation after a grueling confirmation in the US Senate. Tulsi Gabbard had earlier been confirmed as the Director of National Intelligence. Both these are positive from India's point of view: they signal that the sinister Deep State may well be reined in, after decades of anti-India activism on its part.Over the last week or two, there have been revelations after revelations of bad faith on the part of the disgraced US establishment, most notably in the shadowy USAID agency, which, it appears, was the absolute “Heart of Darkness” of the Deep State, neck-deep in covert operations, election interference, and general mayhem all over the world, and certainly in India.Trump himself emphasized that $21 million in covert funds had gone towards affecting election outcomes in India. Presumably the reduced majority Modi got in 2024 could be traced back to this. Fortress AmericaThe general contours of Trump's foreign policy are beginning to emerge. I predicted a month ago, before Trump had taken over, in ‘Greenland, Canada, Panama: Chronicles of a Foreign Policy Foretold', that Western Europe, and the United Kingdom in particular, would find themselves treated as irrelevant to the new order to come. That has happened. In fact, things have gone beyond what I anticipated. In a nutshell, Trump is downgrading the Atlantic, and his focus will be on the Americas, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific. Which, from a historical perspective, makes sense: the world's economic center of gravity is moving towards Asia; trade flows in the Pacific and the Indian Oceans are increasingly more important than in the Atlantic; and a few centuries of European domination are pretty much over.Sorry Europe, Atlanticism is at an endTo put it bluntly, the vanity that Europe is a ‘continent' is now being exposed as hollow: to be precise, it is merely an appendage, an outpost, to vast Asia. Europe is at best a subcontinent, like India is; it should probably be renamed as ‘Northwest Asia'. The saga of ‘Guns, Germs and Steel' post the Industrial Revolution is winding down rapidly. There is some schadenfreude in that the UK becomes even more irrelevant: just a small, rainy island off NW Asia. The Putin-Trump dialog suggests that Ukraine, and even NATO, are now superfluous. Atlanticism has been a constant in US foreign policy, mostly pushed by two forces:* Eastern European-origin State Department officials who have inherited a blood-feud with Russia from their ancestors, eg. Brzezinski, Albright, Nuland, Blinken, Vindman* an ancient intra-Christian schism between the Eastern Orthodox Church and (for a change) an alliance of Roman Catholics and Western Protestants like Lutherans, Anglicans and Calvinists. It is time that the Americans realized they've been turned into cats'-paws by these forces, and turned their backs on these ancient animosities, which have almost no relevance today. In fact one could argue that a NATO-Russian alliance is the right solution in the medium term, because otherwise both could become puppets of China. Bringing the Ukraine war to an end is a start. The general tone of the Trump White House implies a Fortress America. In practice, this seems to mean that instead of being Globocop, the US focuses on a) the Americas, North and South, b) the Pacific Ocean, d) the Indian Ocean, in that order.A new Monroe Doctrine in the AmericasThe attention being paid to Canada and Mexico over and above the tariffs issues suggests that there is a plan to create a stronger and more unified North American entity; the noises about “Canada the 51st state” and “Gulf of America” suggest that maybe a new NAFTA-style agreement could be inked, especially now that the warming Arctic Ocean makes the thawing tundra of Canada more appealing. It is true that there is no immediate thrust for a Monroe Doctrine-style exclusive US ‘sphere of influence' in South America, but I suspect it is coming. Already, there have been positive vibes between Trump and Argentina's Milei, and Salvador's Bukele: the former for his DOGE-style chainsaw-wielding that's showing results, and the latter for his strong law enforcement. The Island Chains and other red lines in the PacificIn the Pacific, there has been pushback against China's moves on the Panama Canal: there are two Hong-Kong-based entities (read proxies of the Chinese government) controlling ports around it: Balboa on the Pacific side, and Cristobal on the Atlantic side.On the other hand, there is increasing global support (with the judicious use of Chinese carrots such as BRI) for the annexation of Taiwan by China, including, if necessary, by force. A Lowy Institute study (“Five One Chinas: The Contest to Define Taiwan”) suggests that some 119 UN member states accept the official Chinese position on ‘reunification'. Only 40 countries are not on board with China's claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. It is very likely that there will be a showdown between the US and China over Taiwan, within the next two years. It is said that Xi Jinping has given a timeframe of 2027 for all this. It will be interesting to see how many states that condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine will condemn China's future attack on Taiwan. Chances are that many will be strategically silent.Japan, Australia, South Korea and other friends of the US will have a hard time keeping the peace in the Pacific. The “Three Island Chains” act as increasingly critical red lines to contain an aggressive China. In fact, the Asia Maritime Initiative is speaking of five island chains (“China's Reach Has Grown, So Should the Island Chains”), including those in the Indian Ocean (remember the “String of Pearls” intended to tighten around India's throat). The three island chains: 1. Taiwan, Japan, Philippines; 2. Guam, Marianas; 3. Hawaii(Source: China is making waves in the Pacific, Alexandra Tirziu, Jan 2024 https://www.gisreportsonline.com/r/china-pacific-conflict/)Meanwhile, in a show of aggression far from its shores, three Chinese warships indulged in “live firing” in international waters between Australia and New Zealand, and commercial aircraft were warned to keep away. This is a warning to Australia, which, thanks to AUKUS foolishness, cancelled French submarines and now await British submarines… in the 2040s.The increasing relevance of the Indian Ocean and the Middle EastMuch of the world's trade, including 75% of global maritime trade and 50% of its daily oil shipments, go through the Indian Ocean. The main issues will be the control of the Straits of Malacca and Hormuz, and the alternative routes being explored by China via the Isthmus of Kra in Thailand, possible use of Coco Islands and other Myanmarese ports including Sittwe and (a bit of a stretch for China) access to Chittagong. There are also troublesome pirates, including Houthis, that make for perilous journeys leading to the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea.Interestingly, the US is making moves in the Indian Ocean that will support both the IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor) and I2U2, the India-Israel-UAE-US economic partnership. IMEC is the old Spice Route, revivified. There is also the proposed Ben-Gurion Canal through the Negev Desert in Israel that would benefit Saudi Arabia as well (its futuristic NEOM city is nearby), and this would be made feasible by Trump's proposed transformation of Gaza. It would be an alternative to Suez.Following up on the Abraham Accords, Trump 2.0 would like to bring the Gaza war to an end, and create an environment in the Middle East where Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE et al will form a counter and a buffer to the machinations of Iran and Turkey. The Indo-US joint communique is a statement of intentIt is in this global context that we need to analyze the joint communique between the US and India after the Trump-Modi summit. Both nations will be attempting to advance their own strategic doctrines. The US would like India to become a non-treaty ally. India would like to keep its multi-alignment policy going, along with Atmanirbharatha. These may make any bilateral progress a little rough but some give and take will work. There are a few specific areas of interest:* Defense* There is an effort by the US to wean India away from its dependency on Russia for weapons. The most evident carrot here is the F-35 advanced fighter jet, which has now been offered to India for the first time, along with other conventional weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stryker infantry combat vehicles, as well as the P8i Poseidon anti-submarine patrol aircraft, and various drones* The P8i is already in service in India, and it would help keep an eye on the southern Bay of Bengal with its proximity to China's submarine pen on Hainan Island* The F-35 raises some questions. In the Bangalore Air Show it was pitted against the Russian Su-57, which is a lot less expensive. Also, the F-35 needs extraordinary levels of maintenance for its ‘stealth' coating. Finally, should India invest in building its own AMCA 5th-generation fighter jet rather than buying?* Even though there will be co-production agreements, the US is a whimsical supplier (remember Tarapur), and there will be little transfer of technology, so military procurement and cooperation must be carefully thought through by India* Trade and Investment* The goal is to reach $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, which would involve a doubling from current levels ($200 billion in 2023). Besides, the Trump doctrine of reciprocal tariffs and zero trade imbalance may make some of this difficult* Indian firms are planning to invest $7.35 billion in the US* Energy* India will now get access to US civil nuclear technology, but there's a small twist: the clauses invoking civil liability for nuclear damage will be deleted. This is reminiscent of Pfizer's covid-era contract with developing countries: Pfizer was assured of indemnity (with the local governments being liable) in case of injury or death caused by its vaccine. This sounds like a bad idea* India will increase its purchases of US oil and natural gas. This is a win-win: it will increase US imports to India, thus reducing the trade deficit, and India will be assured of additional supplies* Technology and Innovation* A whole raft of actions have been proposed, including a tie-up between the US National Science Foundation and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation in India, a program called TRUST, another called INDUS innovation, and one in the area of space collaboration, titled NISAR* Multilateral Cooperation* The Quad, IMEC and I2U2 figured in communique, but also something called the Indian Ocean Strategic Venture. I note this nomenclature progress with approval: there used to be the Asia-Pacific, then it was the Indo-Pacific, and now the Indian Ocean is being singled out* In the area of counter-terrorism, the communique explicitly named Pakistani entities such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Toiba, among others. This is a welcome change from the shadow-boxing indulged in by the Biden administration and others, whereby Pakistani terrorists were treated as ‘assets'* The extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian now in a Los Angeles jail, to India for investigation into his role supporting David Headley, in the 26/11/2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, is a welcome sign, after the curious Biden exertions in the Pannun case* People to people links* Indian parents are spending $8 billion a year to support 300,000 Indian students in the US. This amounts to a sort of ‘foreign aid', and also incidentally supplies a lot of especially STEM graduates to the US economy* Facilitating visas, which have become frustratingly difficult for Indian business and leisure travelers to the US. Last year, the wait for just a visa interview was 452 days in Chennai (as compared to 15 days in Beijing), which probably was the result ot the Biden State Department ‘punishing' India for refusing to toe their Ukraine sanctions line* The legal movement of students and professionals between the two countries is to be eased.Overall, this is a statement of intent: both Modi and Trump are laying their cards on the table, and they will both (as they should) bargain hard to benefit their own nations. But India is no longer being treated as a pariah as it was since the Pokhran blasts, the denial of cryogenic rocket engines (via, yes, the Biden Amendment), and so on.As Trump moves towards the inevitable multipolar world, he does not wish to leave Asia to eager hegemon China; as he wishes to move the US out of military entanglements in far-off places (for which he expects Europe and others to bear the burden of their own defense), it is natural for him to want India to punch its weight in Asia.A mutually beneficial relationship free of the supercilious lectures by previous Democratic administrations (eg Daleep Singh on Ukraine sanctions, and he was, ironically enough, the great-grand-nephew of Dalip Singh Saund) would be welcome from the Indian point of view. Having a counterweight to China, and a G3 instead of a G2, would likewise be useful from the US point of view. Thus, there are glimpses of a possible win-win situation.2222 words, 22-02-2025 This is a public episode. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 3rd of December and here are the headlines.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the Lok Sabha today about the recent developments in India-China bilateral relations over the recent agreement on disengagement and patrolling along the Line of Actual Control.  Jaishankar said, quote “India-China ties cannot be normal without peace in border areas.” unquote. He also said that the immediate priority was to ensure disengagement from friction points, this has been fully achieved. Jaishankar acknowledged that 2020's disruptions adversely impacted bilateral relations, necessitating recalibrated engagements for long-term peace. Both Houses of Parliament resumed normal proceedings today after a week-long standoff between the government and the Opposition, which ended in a resolution and two Bills are expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha – The Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill and The Railways (Amendment) Bill. The Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have killed a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant involved in the killing of seven employees of a construction firm that was building the Z-Morh tunnel near Sonamarg. The name of Junaid Ramzan Bhat, a Lashkar militant from south Kashmir's Kulgam, surfaced after he was identified by the police as one of the two attackers from the CCTV footage of the incident. Police said Bhat was killed during a gunfight in Dachigam forests on the city outskirts.Four workers were killed in a boiler blast at an industrial unit in Ank-leshwar GIDC in the Bha-ruch district of Gujarat today. Bharuch district administration confirmed that the blast occurred at the premises of Detox India Private Limited, which is in the business of industrial waste treatment and disposal. Following the blast, teams from the fire department, industrial safety and health departments, and the police reached the spot and have begun a primary probe into the incident.India experienced its second warmest November in 123 years and this warming trend has continued since the post-monsoon season in October, and could contribute to making 2024 the warmest year ever on record, globally. According to meteorologists, there were two main reasons for the above normal temperatures in India, first the lack of strong western disturbances affecting the plains of northwest India, and second lack of cyclonic disturbances or low pressure systems — both of which kept the rainfall activity at its lowest across the country. The Trinamool Congress asked the Centre today to appeal to the United Nations to send a peacekeeping force to Bangladesh where according to the party “the minorities and the Hindus are being tortured and being killed”.  The party's appeal in the Lok Sabha came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a similar request in the state Assembly. Speaking during the Zero Hour, party MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay sought a statement in the House by Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar about the latest situation in Bangladesh. He added that the West Bengal government had adopted a resolution that it would work together with the Centre on the matter and stand by its decisions. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This week, host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor delve into the harrowing events of November 26, 2008, when 10 Pakistani terrorists infiltrated south Mumbai via the sea, launching a series of devastating attacks.Recounting the gruesome assault orchestrated by the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which claimed 166 lives and left over 300 injured, Shiv shares his firsthand experience of being present outside the Trident-Oberoi on Marine Drive that fateful evening. The duo examines how this incident spotlighted glaring deficiencies in India's intelligence apparatus—highly-trained security forces, including the Mumbai Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Security Guard (NSG), and Marine Commandos (MARCOS).Was this India's 'Kargil moment'? Shiv argues it was ‘far worse'. They scrutinise the factors contributing to the failures, including questions about the ‘political will' of the then UPA government to not respond aggressively, influenced by the geopolitical landscape, particularly the US-Pakistan relationship. What are the lessons learned and the evolution of India's security posture since the tragedy? And why Shiv advocates against labeling it solely as a ‘terrorist attack', for a nuanced understanding of the attacks?Tune in to know!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound mix by Kapil Dev Singh

Canada PM Trudeau made a series of claims that alleged the involvement of Indian government agents in his killing. In another case, the U.S. Department of Justice has indicted a senior Indian government intelligence official for allegedly plotting the assassination of U.S. citizen Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. The deaths, often attributed to unidentified gunmen, have raised eyebrows and conspiracy theories, with questions such as: Does India have a covert hit squad, efficiently eliminating threats without detection? Is there a discernible pattern to the deaths, and what is the rationale behind these covert operations? What is the modus operandi of India's R&AW agency, and can we decipher the truth behind these covert missions? Armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades, the terrorists targeted civilians at numerous sites in the southern part of Mumbai, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station, the popular Leopold Café, two hospitals, and a theatre. While most of the attacks ended within a few hours after they began at around 9:30 PM on November 26, the terror continued to unfold at three locations where hostages were taken—the Nariman House, where a Jewish outreach centre was located, and the luxury hotels Oberoi Trident and Taj Mahal Palace & Tower. By the time the standoff ended at the Nariman House on the evening of November 28, six hostages as well as two gunmen had been killed. At the two hotels, dozens of guests and staff were either trapped by gunfire or held hostage. Indian security forces ended the siege at the Oberoi Trident around midday on November 28 and at the Taj Mahal Palace on the morning of the following day. In all, at least 174 people, including 20 security force personnel and 26 foreign nationals, were killed. More than 300 people were injured. Nine of the 10 terrorists were killed, and one was arrested. The attackers Amid speculation regarding the identity of the terrorists, an unknown group calling itself Mujahideen Hyderabad Deccan claimed responsibility for the attacks in an e-mail; however, the e-mail was later traced to a computer in Pakistan, and it became obvious that no such group existed. The way the terrorists had reportedly singled out Western foreigners at both of the luxury hotels and at the Nariman House led some to believe that the Islamic militant group al-Qaeda was possibly involved, but this appeared not to be the case after the lone arrested terrorist, Ajmal Amir Kasab, provided substantial information regarding the planning and execution of the attacks. Kasab, a native of Pakistan's Punjab province, told investigators that the 10 terrorists underwent prolonged guerrilla-warfare training in the camps of Lashkar-e-Taiba. He further revealed that the team of terrorists had spent time at the headquarters of a second and related organization, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, in the city of Muridke before traveling from Punjab to the port city of Karachi and setting out for Mumbai by sea. After first traveling aboard a Pakistani-flagged cargo ship, the gunmen hijacked an Indian fishing boat and killed its crew; then, once they were near the Mumbai coast, they used inflatable dinghies to reach Badhwar Park and the Sassoon Docks, near the city's Gateway of India monument. At that point the terrorist

It sought ultimately to establish Muslim rule over the entire Indian subcontinent. Though based in Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Taiba initially operated in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, on the Pakistan-India border, but by the first decade of the 21st century the group had expanded its reach farther into India. Jammu and Kashmir was claimed by both India, a largely Hindu country, and Pakistan, a largely Muslim country, and the dispute gave rise to many armed groups within Jammu and Kashmir. One of the largest groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-e-Taiba was extremely pro-Pakistan regarding control of the region. The group opposed any concessions to India. Further, its leaders expressed the desire to establish Islamic rule throughout India. The group took part in several attacks targeting non-Muslim civilian populations in Jammu and Kashmir in an effort to create a Muslim state. Many of Lashkar-e-Taiba's members were Pakistani or Afghan. It was believed that the group had ties with Afghanistan's Taliban government and with the wealthy Saudi extremist and al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Fighters from Lashkar-e-Taiba and another militant Muslim group, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, were killed in August 1998 when U.S. cruise missiles struck bin Laden's training camps in Afghanistan, and a senior al-Qaeda official was captured in a Lashkar-e-Taiba safe house in Pakistan in March 2002. Early activities Lashkar-e-Taiba made its first incursions into Jammu and Kashmir in 1993. In the late 1990s it was alleged that Lashkar-e-Taiba received funding from agencies of the Pakistani government, an allegation the government denied. The group began operating in the Jammu region, which had large numbers of non-Muslims. Working in conjunction with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Taiba began a program of attacks against Hindus and Sikhs. Lashkar-e-Taiba attacks were often aimed at civilians. Beginning in 1999, Lashkar-e-Taiba conducted a series of suicide attacks against Indian security forces, often targeting seemingly secure headquarters. In such attacks, Lashkar-e-Taiba forces were outnumbered and eventually killed, though not before killing Indian troops and causing extensive damage. In 2000 Lashkar-e-Taiba had a falling out with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, which had declared a short-lived cease-fire with India. The group lost more allies in 2001, after the September 11 attacks on the United States led to the removal of the Taliban government in Afghanistan by U.S.-led military forces. On December 13 that year, Lashkar-e-Taiba undertook a suicide attack on India's parliament complex in the capital, New Delhi, in conjunction with Jaish-e-Moham

Highlights of the US Secretary of State's visit to India. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited India yesterday and met with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaisankar, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. As the recent talks between the Indian Deputy Foreign Minister and the Chinese Foreign Minister ended in vain and further disagreements, the Indo-US talks gained global prominence. Five main issues were discussed at the meeting. The establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan, the political situation in Tibet, the activities of the quad organization, China's vision in relation to it, climate change, vaccine distribution and corona epidemic management were important issues. First, the withdrawal of US forces in Afghanistan is being criticized worldwide, as the withdrawal of US forces has led to an increase in Taliban extremist activities in Afghanistan, which are under the control of extremists across the country, and the complete deprivation of democracy and people's rights. Pakistani militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba are turning Afghanistan into their new refuge. In this context, the United States needs the assistance of India, Afghanistan's neighbor, to restore peace in Afghanistan, two main forms of which were emphasized at the meeting. The first is that all extremist activities in Afghanistan must be stopped, and the second is that a lasting political solution must be found. Speaking on the occasion, Antony Blinken lauded India's development plans for Afghanistan and said it would grow further in the years to come. Former US President Donald Trump has ridiculed India's ongoing development projects in Afghanistan and said that India needs to do more than just build buildings in Afghanistan. It is clear that current President Joe Biden is withdrawing US troops already stationed and placing this responsibility on Afghanistan's neighbors.

The growth of Taliban is a risk for all humanity. It is a consequence of the policies adopted by the extremist regime of Saudi Arabia. Wahabism is the official sect of Saudi Arabia and is fully supported by the Saudi government since the very beginning. It has been exported to the entire world. Illegitimate custodianship of Makkah and Madinah has been a big reason why people have accepted their ideology. While anyone can do whatever they want, but creating chaos and producing killers should not be allowed. However, that's what this Wahabi mentality has done. If one argues that this is not the case, let's just see the history of Muslim extremist / terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Taleban, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, all of which adhere to the extremist sect of Wahabism. Therefore, in order to cull the support of terrorism, the Muslim Ummah should come together to liberate Hijaz from the clutches of Aal-e-Saud and the true essence of Islam should be propagated through the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

There's perhaps still a lingering sense of disbelief as we talk about 26 November 2008. In the past years, a lot has been said about how the 26/11 attacks upended the bustling city of Mumbai. Those who survived to tell the tale, journalists who were out in the streets reporting, books, movies that tried to document people's stories, have all tried to capture the horror show that was unleashed in city down to the minutest details. And so even more than a decade later, the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai remains an unforgotten event. As 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists lay siege to the city over three days, more than 160 lives were lost including policemen, Indian citizens and foreign visitors. More than 300 were left injured. Those wounds may have healed and the damaged buildings may have been rebuilt, but the bloodbath and the sheer terror of 26 November 2008 still remains raw. The attacks on the luxurious Taj Hotel in Mumbai in 2008 put Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, a jihadist terrorist group, in the international / Western spotlight for the first time, though they had been deadly active in India and Afghanistan for decades. In her book In Their Own Words: Understanding Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (Oxford University Press, 2018), Christine Fair reveals a little-known aspect of how LeT functions in Pakistan and beyond, by translating and commenting upon a range of publications produced and disseminated by Dar-ul-Andlus, the publishing wing of LeT. Only a fraction of LeT's cadres ever see battle: most of them are despatched on nation-wide "prozelytising" (dawa) missions to convert Pakistanis to their particular interpretation of Islam, in support of which LeT has developed a sophisticated propagandist literature. This canon of Islamist texts is the most popular and potent weapon in LeT's arsenal, and its scrutiny affords insights into how and who the group recruits; LeT's justification for jihad; its vision of itself in global and regional politics; the enemies LeT identifies and the allies it cultivates; and how and where it conducts its operations. Particular attention is paid to the role that LeT assigns to women by examining those writings which heap extravagant praise upon the mothers of aspirant jihadis, who bless their operations and martyrdom. It is only by understanding LeT's domestic functions as set out in these texts that one can begin to appreciate why Pakistan so fiercely supports it, despite mounting international pressure to disband the group. India and the United States are placed in extremely difficult positions with regard to Pakistan because of this. The Indian subcontinent, or South Asia, includes  Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives. It contains one quarter of the world's population, a centre of global GDP, 2 antagonistic nuclear armed powers, and has been central to world history and the world economy for most of human history.Yet to much of the world it remains an Area of Darkness. There is a lively intellectual tradition in the subcontinent, and it is a place of endless, continuing debate and discussion: religious, political, philosophical, artistic, and more.On this podcast it is an area which we have discussed several times, from various insider perspectives.Today, we explore the region from an outsider position, but a very knowledgeable and distinguished one that is sure to shed light from a different angle. My guest today is Dr. Christine Fair, a Provost's Associate Professor within the Security Studies Program within Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. She works on the political military affairs of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Her most recent book is titled "In Their Own Words: Understanding the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba" (Oxford University Press, 2019).We discuss:- her "Cuisines of the Axis of Evil" cookbook - what the food of the Indian subcontinent reveals about history, globalisation, borders, male and female labour, gender relations, religion, taboos, caste, class, etc.- how geography has determined Afghanistan's politics, international relations, and history, as well as Pakistan- why India is morea accurately seen like Europe -- a continent with entirely different countries, peoples, and cultures, though connected -- rather than as a single country with regional variations- the importance of "Layla" on Netflix in understanding varna and caste- the horrendous trafficking of girls from Myanmar to China because of the lack of women there- aggressive Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Myanmar- the social and political changes in Islamic dress in the region- the parallels between the sexual demonisation of Islamic men in South Asia and black men in America- the recurring themes of nationalism and the purity of women- The Khalistan idea in the Sikh Diaspora vs. in India- exploring the emergence of the beard fashion in the United States during the era of the "war on terror" and its possible relation to Islam- the history of the fragmentation of the Indian subcontinent, and the controversy over the role of the British and the United States- what the British really thought of Ali Mohammed Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan- the US view of the South Asian region, especially Pakistan vs. India, also US vs. China- The total illegitimacy of Pakistan's claims on Kashmir- the curiosity of Muslims' defense of Article 370 as something that protected them, when it was actually meant to protect Hindus

It has been 10 years since the 2008 Terrorist Attacks on Mumbai. Ten terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Taiba killed over 174 people in South Mumbai, and committed the one of the worst acts of terror on Indian soil. Dheeraj PC, a doctoral student in Intelligence Studies at the University of Leicester, helps us go deep into the attacks and their aftermath. Dheeraj analyses the events of 26/11, the strategy of the terrorists and their commanders in Pakistan, and the Indian response to contain and counter the attack. Dheeraj goes beyond simplistic ideas of how India "failed" or how Pakistan "succeeded", and busts many commonly held myths.

The Mumbai attacks have been linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and radical Islamic groups in Kashmir generally. Yet it would be a mistake to see Lashkar only as a local organization with only a local agenda. Saudi Arabia has contributed very much to what Lashkar-e-Taiba looks like, how it thinks, its motivation, ideology, and funding. Saudi Arabia presents itself as the protector and the spearhead of the defense of Muslims around the world against what they define as the Western cultural attack.

Mobeen Azhar travels to the Pakistani city of Quetta to investigate how it has become the scene of violent and indiscriminate attacks by Sunni militants against the local ethnic Hazara community. It's a city which has become effectively a no-go area for foreign journalists due to the persistent and intensifying violence. Mobeen tells the story of a single day in January of this year when over 100 people lost their lives in twin bombings in Quetta. Claiming responsibility was the Sunni militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Mobeen retraces the story of the bombings, and examines the growing security concerns in a district dominated by the Shia Hazara community. He speaks to Fayyaz Mohammed, a candidate in the forthcoming elections who has links to Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and talks with Paul Bhatti, who until recently was the Pakistani Minister of National Harmony. Bhatti blames the government's inability to enforce "effective policy" on Pakistan's long history of military dictatorship. Azhar meets blast survivors and the families of victims, and finds out how the security situation is causing many young Hazaras to leave Quetta to seek a better life elsewhere - despite the dangers of putting their lives in the hands of people smugglers.
