Pole vault is an athletics discipline that we have really had questions about, so we're thrilled that Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Katie Nageotte--now Katie Moon--could join us to talk about her sport. We talked with Katie about poles (ever wonder how much a pole vault pole costs? Try seven of them), spikes, and what it feels like if a pole snaps while you're mid-vault. Follow Katie on TikTok, Insta and Twitter! We stick with our pole vault theme for our history moment, when Jill looks at the pole vault competition from Seoul 1988. That's men's pole vault, as women didn't start vaulting in the Olympics until 2000. Who was part of this competition? The legendary Sergey Bubka! In our visit to TKFLASTAN, we have news from: Para archer Matt Stutzman Shooter Tim Sherry Beach volleyball player Kelly Cheng USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews Curler John Shuster Former artistic swimmer Jacqueline Simoneau Russian basketball is out for Paris 2024, as are Aussie athletes after 48 hours. Want to win a bib to the Paris 2024 Marathon Pour Tous? You could win one if you do the Orange Night Run this June! Plus, Alison has an exciting update from Milan-Cortina, and Jill and Book Club Claire went to see The Magnificent Seven. This week's episode is a first for RYM as we're so lucky to be joined by reigning World and Olympic champion pole vaulter Katie Nageotte. Katie may not have a lot of long runs in her training but she was a fantastic guest and I absolutely loved the opportunity to nerd out over one of my favorite events in track and field while getting into all the fun Run Your Mouth topics we love. Katie is an Atlanta-based pole vaulter with a personal best of 4.95m (16 ft 3 in) who won gold in Tokyo and Eugene in 2021 and 2022 along with a World Indoor silver this winter in Serbia. But behind those big championship performances were a lot of mental and physical challenges along the way, and on this episode we talked a lot about the barriers Katie's had to overcome this year and how managing the “post-Olympic hangover” turned into one of the biggest hurdles of her professional career. This conversation really shows how the end result of an athlete's season only scratches the surface of their story, and how getting to know some of the sport's biggest stars can teach you a lot about overcoming your own obstacles. This episode of Run Your Mouth is presented by Nike. We've partnered with them to help share athletes' stories in a way that reflects the different reasons we all choose to run, work out, and find our part of the track and field community. In my conversations with athletes in all events and all levels over the years, one common theme I hear over and over again is that finding the unique ways running brings you joy is the best way to develop a happy lifelong relationship with the sport. Come run with Nike. For the everyday and common runner Nike is committed to motivating, standing by, listening to, and helping them from the starting line to the finish line and every inch, meter and mile in between. Whether it's a local race, a major marathon, or just a run with friends, get out there and run. Just do it. Check out the Nike Run Club app and come run with us. On the post-Tokyo hangover: “After I won [Olympic gold] I had so many cool opportunities […] but I didn't realize how exhausted I was until I started competing again in January. I took six weeks off physically but not stepping away mentally or emotionally took a toll.” On resetting after the season: “When I'm training, even on rest days, I'm always focused on vaulting – it's always in the back of my mind. So when I get time off, being able to step away and not think about pole vault for a while is the best thing for me.” On growing slowly as an athlete: “It's taken me time at every level to reach the top. It took me until senior year of high school to win the state meet, until senior year of college to win a national title. It took me 5 years after college to get a contract. It taught me internal motivation – I'm not doing it for approval; I'm just here to be the best to be I can be.” On training with Sandi Morris: “I was pushed harder than I ever have been training with her. We're competitive people and when we get on the runway we want to win, but in practice we're training next to each other, rather than against each other.”

What an awesome surprise! Katie and I have been trying to schedule a new pod episode for a little while now, and scheduling podcasts is always the most difficult part of podcasting. Everyone is busy and it is SOOO difficult to get schedules to line up. When she mentioned that Holly was going to be in town and they were both willing to hop on, it was a no brainer, drop everything and record (or not record) situation. I am very appreciative of these ladies and their willingness to open up about some potentially vulnerable topics such as the Post Olympics Blues, the effects of mixing money and the pole vault, and many others. I think the biggest take away from this episode for me was the incredible value of a good friend. Holly and Katie's friendship originates in the pole vault, but the roots run so much deeper now. This event, even though it provides great frustration at times, has been so good to so many people, and I think that Katie and Holly would agree that their friendship is one of the greatest things the pole vault has provided them with.
Olympic Gold Medalist pole vaulter Katie Nageotte sat down with Chico at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards to discuss winning Gold at the 2020 Olympic Games, during the pandemic. She also reminisced about growing up in Cleveland and cheering for the 90s Indians.
Today we breakdown the crazy weekend of college conference weekend including Abby Steiner's American record in the 200m, Brandon Miller dropping a crazy 800m, and preview National Championship favorites. In this very special Happy Birthday Podcast episode I reflect back on this first year of hosting a podcast. Starting in November 2020, the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast was created to spread my message of fueling optimally to maximize our potential as female athletes. My hope was to reach a wider audience, beyond the clients I work with at Rise Up Nutrition, and share my knowledge around to empower females to be fierce, fit and fueled. In this episode, I touch on the fears that held me back from recording a podcast sooner, the feelings of imposter syndrome around sharing information other people have already said before. My motivation to push past these fears has always been to reach someone, somewhere, who hasn't already heard this message. I share my struggle with self-criticism, and hearing myself talk regularly on a podcast has brought its own challenges, such as inviting on great guests, preparing for episodes and asking the “right” questions, alongside my full-time work at Rise Up Nutrition. I touch on some of the amazing guests featured on the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast: Olympians like Terin Humphrey and Katie Nageotte, professional athletes and past clients of mine such as Mary Cain and Cali Schweikhart, esteemed experts Dr Emily Kraus and Nancy Clark, friends, family, colleagues at Rise Up Nutrition and more. The amazing feedback I've received from you FANS, supporters of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, has kept this going! Because of you, and the following we've gained worldwide, this podcast celebrates its first birthday, the first of many to come. Together, I believe we can all embody my “F's”: fierce, fit and fueled in all aspects of life. Join this movement as we embark on year 2! Our heroes return with a hero of their own: Cleveland's very own OLYMPIC CHAMPION KATIE NAGEOTTE! Katie talks about winning Gold in pole vault at the Tokyo Summer Olympics - like what goes through your mind running down the track during a Gold Medal vault, what its like being #1 in the world at something, how important being open about mental health and body image is to her, being invited to speak to the entire Browns team, leading the stadium chant on Thursday Night Football, and so much more. Truly appreciate Katie taking the time to record with us - follow her on Instagram and Twitter @ktnago13. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Then it's on to Browns Trivia: Bengals Edition where we hope to give away some Labatt and GV Artwork gear. Lastly, it's on to Cincinnati to preview this matchup, look at some bets, and end with the BEST and WORST tweets of the week! Subscribe it would mean a lot!
In this episode, I speak to the 2020 Olympic Champion in the pole vault, Katie Nageotte. She touches on her bumpy build up to the Olympics and how she overcame adversity along the way to capturing the gold medal. This adversity included her losing weight following an episode of food poisoning that she felt was detrimental to her performance: lighter is not better! Katie details her steady progression in the pole vault from high school beginnings to NCAA D2 success and into her professional career. College was a big transition, and Katie opens up about the fear and anxiety that she's dealt with for years. She explains how going back to the basics and focusing on the process allowed her to reach higher heights. Katie speaks of her nutrition journey from days of underfueling and underperforming to now adopting a more flexible and relaxed approach. Her fueling struggles began in college, and into her early professional career Katie fell into the comparison trap, competing on the pro circuit in a sports bra and buns and not feeling like she matched up to her competitors. By obsessing less on food, weight and appearance, and focusing more on fueling for performance, staying full and satiated, Katie started to jump higher and have more success. To reach higher heights, Katie has had to gain strength: yes, that meant gaining weight! Her fear about body image was flipped: gaining weight resulted in her leaning out and looking stronger rather than “softer”. Katie advocates for the support of a dietician, coach, physician and a healthy environment that cultivates good habits around food, weight and training. We can all learn from how Katie has improved her body image, by caring more on performance and what the body can do rather than on what it looks like. Katie now embraces weight fluctuations and body changes throughout the year, and enjoys eating without restrictions. Katie's Bio Katie Nageotte 2020 Olympic Champion in the Women's Pole Vault. "It takes a lot to get out of your comfort zone, especially in the pole vault. Because it is scary and because there is a fear element, you want to hold onto your comfort zone so badly...Changing things really is not easy. There were a lot of tears. I always bought in. My gut led me to Ashland. My gut sent me to Brad (Walker). It hasn't been wrong yet. I knew that I was in the right place because of the way he described it. He made it so simple. I'm in control of what I'm doing so if I focus on X, Y and Z, the heights will come. He totally changed the mental game for me, which then allowed me to change the technical things. It took all of that time to make that happen. Especially in this generation, people want immediate gratification and results. I'm very much like that. I don't like waiting for things. I'm really happy that I didn't make the team in 2016 because I would not have done that. I would not have gone that far out of my comfort zone. I wouldn't have let someone else challenge me that way. I'm grateful that I took the leap and my gut led me to where it is.” Katie Nageotte is the Olympic gold medalist in the pole vault. She is one of three American women to take gold in the event at the Games. In this episode, there's plenty of Ohio talk because if you've followed her on social media she's been parading around the medal all over Cleveland. The Olmsted Falls native has thrown out the first pitch at the Indians game, given a pep talk at the Browns practice and been honored by state officials. We discuss her journey and success at Ashland University at the Division II level and what pushed her to keep going as a professional pole vaulter. As a pro, she finished 5th at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2016 which led her to make a change and team up with Brad Walker as her coach. Over the past five years, she saw major improvement under the 2007 world champion's guidance. She made the 2018 World Indoor and 2019 World outdoor teams. A breakthrough in 2020 and 2021 suddenly made her the Olympic gold medal favorite. She discusses how that all happened and how she managed the pressure. At the 2020 Games, she missed on her first two tries at 4.5 meters so there was added pressure there. Then, she managed to turn it around. Listening to her recounting her experience in Tokyo is pretty thrilling so I hope you enjoy it. Chris, Kyle and Dana recap Day 7 of track and field at the Olympics which was highlighted by Katie Nageotte's gold medal in the women's pole vault, where she became just the third woman to win gold in the event at the Games. This was a true moment of redemption as she missed the 2016 Olympics, switched coaches and took a leap of faith to continue within the sport. She gets the Magical Performance of the Day honors. The men's 400 meter final was not as delightful for U.S. fans as Michael Cherry ran a personal best for fourth place and Michael Norman took fifth but Team USA was shut out of the medals for just the third time in history. We beg the question: Is the United States (particularly the men) having a bad Olympics and what's the possible cause. Also discussed in this episode: – If you're Damian Warner and you finally win gold in the decathlon after three Olympic cycles, do you keep going? – We still need a healthy and full-on KJT vs. Thiam heptathlon rivalry – Cole Hocker looked really good in the men's semifinals of the 1,500 meters; Reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz gets eliminated – Gutsiest performance of the day: Nick Willis runs his fastest time in four years in the semifinals of his fifth Olympics at 38 years old – A brief women's marathon preview + Much More TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TORCH TALK WITH CHRIS, KYLE AND DANA.
