This week Mondo Jazz turns "100 episodes old". So we open with the uplifting "celebration" by South African pianist Bheki Mseleku before delving into what we like best, unearthing precious gems from around the world. During the first hour segment we feature another great stack of new releases, including the upcoming "The Fantastic Mrs. 10" by Tim Berne's Snakeoil and a special focus on the French and Italian scenes, including one of the albums destined to make many 'best of 2020' listicles, Zeno De Rossi Trio's "Elpis". In the second hour we focus on new releases by Kirk Knuffke and Paul Bryan as well as upcoming Blue Note albums by Charles Lloyd and South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini. Ware Quartet in the 1990s, but has made multiple albums as a leader and collaborated with a lot of other musicians, including Joe Morris, Ivo Perelman, and Mat Maneri. His latest releases are a double CD, Tao Quartets, on AUM Fidelity — each CD features a different band — and a duo CD with cornet player Kirk Knuffke, Drone Dream, on NoBusiness. In this interview, we talk about the evolution of his style, the musicians he studied with — including Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, and Andrew Cyrille — and his various bands and projects. We also talk about aspects of his personal life that some listeners and fans may not know about. Des clubs de New York où se fabriquait le free jazz dans les années 60 à sa découverte du poète haïtien Frank Etienne, Jacques Coursil égraine ses carnets de voyage. Son itinéraire nous fait croiser les routes de Jaki Byard, Bill Dixon ou Leonard Bernstein. Enregistrant dès 1966 en side man pour le label ESP aux côtés de Sunny Murray ou Frank Wright, il publiera ensuite deux albums dans la légendaire série « byg actuel » avec Arthur Jones, Burton Greene ou Anthony Braxton avant qu’une carrière universitaire ne l’éloigne des studios pendant près de 25 ans. IL fait son grand retour en 2005 sollicité par John Zorn et a enregistré depuis deux albums à la dimension poétique et historique ainsi qu’un duo avec Alan Silva. De passage à Paris où il peaufine un projet autour de l’oeuvre de Frank Etienne, Jacques Coursil, conteur de génie, s’est arrêté dans nos studios et avec lui nous avons construit ce documentaire qui sonne comme un véritable film audio. En seconde heure, nous allons à la découverte du superbe trio polonais RGG qui a récemment croisé le fer avec Trevor Watts et Evan Parker. On s’intéresse aussi au dernier album de James Brandon Lewis, saxophoniste très en vue actuellement. El cornetista Kirk Knuffke y el clarinetista Ben Goldberg encuentran inspiración en un pico de las Montañas Rocosas, el "Uncompahgre", que se encuentra en el mismo estado de Estados Unidos en el que ambos nacieron, Colorado. El próximo 14 de junio se cumplen 10 años del fallecimiento del pianista sueco Esbjörn Svensson. El sello ACT publica "Live in London", concierto registrado en 2005 en la capital británica junto a sus compañeros Dan Berglund (cb) y Magnus Öström (batería). La baterista Allison Miller publica "Otis was a polar bear", nueva grabación de su proyecto Boom Tic Boom. En esta ocasión, además de los habituales Myra Melford (piano), Jenny Scheinman (violín) y Tod Sickafoose (contrabajo), se suman el cornetista Kirk Knuffke y el clarinetista Ben Goldberg. En esta edición de 'Club de Jazz' del 4 de junio de 2016, escuchamos además un ambicioso trabajo del clarinetista Ben Goldberg bajo el título de "Orphic Machine", a partir de un tratado poético de quien fuera su profesor de literatura, Allen Grossman. Una grabación que incluye a músicos como Nels Cline (guitarra), Ches Smith (batería) y Carla Kihlstedt (voz y violín), entre otros. El "Jazz Porteño" de Alberto Varela ofrece la música del pianista Gustavo Kerestezachi en una grabación en Buenos Aires de diciembre de 1961, que fue recientemente recuperada. The album features Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Bob Stewart on tuba and Matt Wilson on drums. In this interview, Lederer talks about that early band and how it introduced him to collective improvisation; how a shared love of Albert Ayler brought he and Matt Wilson together; and his fascination with the Shakers, both musically and anthropologically.
