This week on the Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie delve into the dynamic world of education and entrepreneurship with special guests, Jeff and Laura Sandefer of Acton Academy. Jeff, a seasoned entrepreneur and esteemed Socratic Guide, has a remarkable dual life, having founded multiple successful businesses and earned accolades as an outstanding teacher at the University of Texas. Laura, co-founder of Acton Academy and an author, takes us on her Hero's Journey in education, chronicled in her book "Courage to Grow." Acton Academy's learner-driven model has spread across the globe with over 130 locations, emphasizing real-world projects, apprenticeships, and Socratic discussions. The school's foundation lies in the Hero's Journey, a narrative pattern guiding children through adventures, victories, and transformations. Laura passionately discusses Acton Academy's commitment to inspiring children to find their callings, employing adaptive game-based programs and online tools like Khan Academy to teach core skills. Laura and Jeff share their passion for giving children hands-on entrepreneurial experience through Acton Academy's Children's Business Fairs. These fairs provide children with opportunities to be entrepreneurs, fostering confidence, imparting valuable lessons, and preparing them for success in a rapidly changing world.  Join us on this insightful journey with Jeff and Laura Sandefer as they discuss Acton Academy's innovative approach to education, combining entrepreneurship, the Hero's Journey, and hands-on experiences to inspire and equip the next generation of independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Website – https://www.actonacademy.org/ Sponsors: - aeropress.com/TNQ - Uncommongoods.com/TNQ In this episode you will hear: • The best teacher in the best school in Austin TX just told us not to send our children to traditional school because they'd be chained to a desk and lectured to all day. (7:17) • I'm not homeschooling. That wasn't in my blood at all. (7:33) • One of the narratives of the experience is The Heroes Journey. (9:25) • An ordinary person hears a call, sets out on an adventure, wrestles monsters, has mentors and guides, seeking a treasure all the way. And they may or may not get the treasure, but they return home a changed person, ready to share their new ideas and character with the world around them. Then, they set out on a new adventure again. (9:38) • Every time they get knocked down – they may not win, but they'll get back up. (10:13) • What a hero's journey does is distinguish hero vs victim. Any child at an Acton Academy starts claiming the identity of the hero. That's not someone who wins all the time; its someone who gets back up after they fall down. (10:23) • The hero takes responsibility and starts problem-solving, whereas a victim outs the blame on somebody else. (10:59) • They learn ways to work through problems with gritty decision-making (11:28) • The 3 big monsters starting at age 6: We start wresting with Victim-hood, Resistance, and Distraction. (12:18) • Sometimes your big brother needs to pick you up and say “get back in the fight.” (16:11) • IQ is so overrated - because its perseverance, grit, and getting along with people. That's what really matters. (19:30) • People who are there because they want to be there, they choose to be there, and they're on a mission for their life (21:08) • No adult on campus is ever allowed to answer a question. (25:43) • Things get chaotic – Part of the model is letting things fall into chaos, and let order arise as the young people figure out how to solve the problem. (26:41) • What's the best thing about Acton Academy? They'll say freedom. (27:11) • We believe every single child is a genius, who deserves to find a calling and change the world. (42:15) • The cave you fear to enter is where your treasure lies. (44:37)

On this episode I sat with Brooke & Jimmy Ogle who've opened up their own school in NW OKC out of a need for better education and opportunities for their three kids. Here's their story,Jimmy and Brooke are both from Oklahoma and have been married since 2009. Together they have three children, each of whom attends Wildflower: An Acton Academy. As a family, they enjoy traveling, playing games, reading, and discovering new things. As a mom, I wanted a different education for my children. After trying both a public and a private Christian school, I knew that the education I dreamed of offering my kids could not be found within the walls of traditional education. That is when I turned to homeschool. I loved educating my kids in unique ways, allowing them to flourish without the unneeded pressure traditional schools encouraged. Then one day, while struggling to piece together some curriculum, I felt homeschooling was still missing some critical aspects. The question that plagued me was if a traditional school or even homeschooling was the best education I could provide my children. I didn’t want to settle for just ok – I wanted excellence. In my heart, I believed there had to be a better way! I felt somewhat stuck between recognizing that my kids had outgrown homeschooling but not feeling confident in any school options available. That is when I found Acton Academy a nonprofit foundation that helps parents open schools worldwide. Acton co-founders Jeff and Laura Sandefer opened the first Acton in Austin Texas in 2008 to create a more robust education for their two sons. They have taken their best practices and learning philosophies and are helping other like-minded families open schools all over the world. It was as if a blurry vision and determination to offer my kids the best education had suddenly become crystal clear. If you are ready to reinvent education for your family, I encourage you to give me a call or schedule a school tour. I look forward to meeting your family. For more information click here to visit their website: www.wildfloweracton.com #thisisoklahoma

In this fascinating discussion, we interview Jeff Sandefer, Co-Founder of Acton Academy. What he and his wife Laura have done, along with the support of hundreds of families across the globe, is create a revolution that has reignited a love of learning. Not simply for the sake of "knowing", but for the joy of "becoming". Acton Academy is focused on "equipping children to share learning with each other, in a close-knit community with extremely high standards of excellence." The model for all academies is very unique but rooted in philosophies that have existed for centuries. Calling upon the Socratic Method (starting with a great, overarching question and letting the learners grapple with the potential answers), the Guides at Acton introduce students to experiments, case studies, and resources that bring about a journey of discovery, rather than bell schedules and lectures.Since its formation in 2010, Acton has grown to more than 270 campuses across the globe with more on the way. Ever wondered how we can truly impact our future generation? It’s not by answering every question for them or doing every hard task for them, it’s by allowing them to think deeply and think freely. It’s when we allow children to discover their own identity do we instill purpose into their lives. When children grow up with a hero mentality instead of a victim mentality, children are far more equipped of creating positive change out in the world.  This week, I am talking with the co-founder of Acton Academy, Laura Sandefer, as we dive into what it means to disrupt the traditional model of school. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Acton Academy. Co-founder Laura Sandefer is sharing about what makes Acton different, and how their overarching philosophy that every person deserves to find their calling and change the world informs their unique educational model.    When their own sons were young, the Sandefers were unsatisfied with the educational options open to them, so they decided to make up their own program and give it a try.   “We literally said, ‘let's rip up the school playbook and create something brand new and let's just see if it works.'” -Laura Sandefer   From that one small school with 5 families, they have grown Acton Academy to a network of over 200 schools in 30 states and 20 countries. Through the growing pains that any business experiences (hiring, knowing when to say no, finding the right collaborators), Laura says she still finds courage to grow when she sees the kids eyes and minds lighting up.    “...the fear never goes away...but when you see that flicker of curiosity and love flowing in the people around you, that's what still keeps me going every day.” -Laura Sandefer   Topics discussed with Acton Academy co-founder Laura Sandefer in this episode:   Learner-driven educational communities Mixing old and new methodologies Letting kids solve their own problems Building entrepreneurial spirit into education Whole person education The Hero's Journey as a model for growth The value of failure Sacrifice vs. suffering Laura's book “Courage to Grow”   Connect with Laura Sandefer of Acton Academy: Website Instagram Facebook   Laura Anderson Sandefer lives in Austin, Texas, with her children, husband, and three dogs. The Journey

When her two young children were old enough to begin their traditional schooling, Laura Sandefer and her husband Jeff were at an inflection point. They didn't want the traditional path for their kids but they didn't believe they could do classic homeschooling either. What that left them, was the idea to start a school of their own school and create a radical new way for children to learn. The two launched Acton Academy and it has grown into a collection of one-room schools around the world.   It was a big mess to be perfectly honest. We didn't know what we were doing, and we had no grand plan. We didn't have a strategic plan, we didn't have anything, and we definitely did not have a plan that this would expand beyond our own small community.   But changing the way children learn is not an easy task, and the style of learning is not for everyone.  And so, despite wanting to change the world for everyone, Laura had to do what all small business owners do — find the right market, learn to identify who to target, and who to let go of, accept rejection and grow slowly and steadily in order to make a lasting impact.   Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney.
