Being invited was no small feat because Dan rarely had guests. What made it happen? A simple yet impactful story about my son. Read more about it here in my blog.
As we celebrate 500 episodes of Podcast Talent Coach, I want to share with you six mentors who have shaped my journey over the past 10 years. LEARNING FROM MENTORS I learned long ago that I don't know everything and never will. Every experience is an opportunity to learn something. Conferences and conventions are always such a powerful experience for me. Many people say they rarely go to the session and instead have conversations in the halls. I can understand that. But, I think they are missing the power of the collective mind. Mingling in the halls during a conference will definitely grow your network. It has a place in your business. However if you skip all the sessions, you are missing ideas that could take your business to an entirely new level. We would attend the Country Radio Seminar every year in radio. I would travel with my music director for the station. During the day, we would take in all the sessions of the conferences. At night, we would split up to attend events and network with artists and record labels. From the sessions, we would learn new ideas to implement with the stations. At night, we would network with people who could help us implement those ideas. Then one day our company decided it wasn't necessary for both of us to be there. That single decision cut our learning in half and diminished the networking we were able to do. The company thought the conference was nothing but a party. It may have been for those who spent all of their time in the halls. When you're learning from mentors and expanding your thinking, things are possible beyond your imagination. These six mentors helped my achieve levels bigger than I every dreamed. It is my hope that these nuggets spur some new ideas for you as well. DAN MILLER The first is the mentor who has influenced my life the longest. Dan Miller's book and podcast "48 Days To The Work You Love" inspired me to follow my dream and start my own business. Dan is author of the New York Times best-selling 48 Days To The Work You Love and Wisdom Meets Passion, No More Dreaded Monday and An Understanding Heart. His 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 1% of all podcasts worldwide and his 48DaysEagles.com community is viewed as an example around the world for those seeking to find – or create – the work and the life they love. His podcast sits at the center of his multiple streams of income. Unfortunately, we lost Dan in January of this year after a very brief battle with cancer. Dan's attitude through that entire struggle was impressive and uplifting. He kept asking as he always did, "What does this make possible?" Dan saw the silver lining in every cloud. He was an amazing man and a mentor to me in so many ways. Dan joined my on Episode 466 to discuss multiple streams of income. You can find the episode at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/466. DAN'S NUGGETS Here are a few nuggets from that episode. Resilience in the Face of Adversity: "When we hit Covid and I couldn't have live events for a couple years there, that had been a big resource for us, a big revenue stream, but not being able to have live events, it didn't really affect us. My revenue continued to go up because we made content available to people in other ways that they could experience, even if they didn't come to Franklin, Tennessee."— Dan Miller 00:24:39 – 00:25:03. Life Reassessment in Midlife Careers: "What surprised me is I had doctors and dentists and pastors and engineers and accountants showing up and why you guys here? And it was like, well, we're doing okay. You know, everybody looking in from the outside to see us is doing okay, but I don't think this is it."— Dan Miller 00:26:29 – 00:26:45. How to Turn Your Writing into Income: "How do you take just a raw idea and turn it into real income? But those came directly from people asking, how do I do that?"— Dan Miller 00:30:42 – 00:30:50. Easy Income Streams for Podcasters: "The easiest next step is coaching. Because if you have a podcast and you're talking about personal development and growth or business success or how to scale or those things, you're inevitably going to have people ringing your doorbell saying, can I talk to you?"— Dan Miller 00:44:47 – 00:45:43. I'll always cherish everything I've learned from Dan and all the inspiration he provided. You can find more about Dan at https://www.48days.com. MARC MAWHINNEY The next mentor who has been a big influence on me over the past decade and 500 episodes was one of my very first coaches. Marc Mawhinney is a lifelong entrepreneur who helps coaches get more clients without paid advertising! He achieves this with his coaching programs, his podcast Natural Born Coaches, his Facebook group The Coaching Jungle, and his Secret Coach Club. Marc has been a speaker at events like Social Media Marketing World, frequently makes media appearances and contributes for Entrepreneur.com. He is a master at joint venture partnerships. I discovered Marc through his Coaching Jungle Facebook group and he soon became my coach. He taught me the power of sending a daily email. Our coaching sessions helped me refine my offers and get my business to the next level. Marc appeared on episode 333 with me to discuss the power of joint venture partnerships. You can find the episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/333. MARC'S GEMS Here are a few gems Marc shared during our conversation. Stand Firm on Your Beliefs: "Sure, you're going to turn some people off, but you're going to attract the people who you want to attract, and that's exactly what you do."— Marc Mawhinney 00:16:25 – 00:16:31. The Importance of Community for Coaches: "Whatever you do, you need a place to gather your potential clients. You know, people to get to know, like and trust you."— Marc Mawhinney 00:20:27 – 00:20:34. Viral Topic - The Power of Community: "I can't count how many times someone said to me, mark, I love your Facebook group. It's helped me so much the last few years."— Marc Mawhinney 00:20:55 – 00:21:44. I can't thank Marc enough for pointing me in the right direction with his coaching. Find Marc in his Coaching Jungle Facebook group. CINDY J. HOLBROOK One day Marc was invited to participate in a giveaway. It didn't fit in his marketing plan at the time, so he sent the organizer to me feeling we might work well together. That organizer was Cindy J, The Visibility Wiz. Not only did I participate in her giveaway, Cindy soon became my next coach and she's one of the best in the business. Cindy guides entrepreneurs and small business owners to thrive as you go up the ladder from being the best-kept secret to Trusted and In-Demand Authority. She has been coaching since 2009. Through our work together, Cindy taught me the power of visibility, how to use giveaways to grow my list, and ways to partner with others. She is simply an all around great person. I love her to death and really appreciate all she has given me over the years. Cindy was on episode 479 of Podcast Talent Coach to talk about visibility. You can find the episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/479. CINDY'S SUGGESTIONS Here are a few things we learned in that episode. From Social Services to Coaching Success: "But I have all this knowledge of the online world that I utilized to get clients. And, I was able to leave social services within 2 years of becoming a coach, and that's when I started attending a lot of events. And people were constantly coming up to me."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:20:23 – 00:20:41. Title: Maximizing Advertising DollarsQuote: "My advertising dollars goes towards participating in giveaways or speaking in front of people, you know, being a sponsor at events. That's where my advertising dollars go because I get more return on my money that way."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:35:04 – 00:35:18. The Power of Collaboration: "I didn't start collaborating with other experts till, 2014. And that's what finally pushed me over to 6 figures was whenever I started collaborating with other experts."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:39:11 – 00:39:24. How to Boost Your Business Today: "If you start doing something every day, you make sure you do at least 1 money making activity Monday through Friday or whatever your workdays are. You're going to start seeing an increase in everything, in visibility, influence, and profits."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:42:44 – 00:42:58. Cindy is amazing when it come to leveling up your visibility. Find her online at https://www.cindyjholbrook.com. IMAN AGHAY After I was working with Cindy for a few months, she suggest I attend Collaborate. It was an amazing 3-day event to meet JV partners. This one event changed my business more than I could ever have imagined. At the time, Collaborate was run by Iman Aghay and Rich German. Iman has been so influential in so many aspects of my business. Through this event, Iman taught me how to properly joint venture with others. He has taught me how to create my courses and events. More importantly, Iman showed my how to sell what I do. Iman Aghay is a serial entrepreneur, international speaker, and a nine-time #1 best-selling author. He is best known as the co-founder of Actionera, a platform that assists experts in building mobile apps to enhance their income and impact. Iman hasn't been on the podcast. However, I did a deep dive into finding promotional partners using everything Iman taught me. You can find that in episode 391 at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/391. IMAN'S INSPIRATION Here are few takeaways from that episode. How to Skyrocket Your Podcast Growth: "Just imagine how your podcast and your business could grow if you could find 40 partners who would be willing to promote you to their fans, to their tribe, to their followers."— Erik K. Johnson 00:01:07 – 00:01:14. The Best Part of Pitch Refinement: "But the best part is everybody in the circle's on the same page with regard to who talks, what they talk about, how long they talk. There's no pressure. You don't need to awkwardly walk up to anyone to strike up a conversation like you would in a at a networking event."— Erik K. Johnson 00:06:20 – 00:06:38. Power of Partnerships: "I've been able to grow my email list from about 500 to nearly 4,500. My podcast downloads have doubled. I've made affiliate commissions from promoting those partners, and I had partners promote my courses and my coaching to their audience as well just to help me grow."— Erik K. Johnson 00:10:08 – 00:10:30. The Power of Partnership: "If you wanna go fast, travel alone. If you wanna go far, travel together."— Erik K. Johnson 00:10:53 – 00:11:01. Iman Aghay is an amazing online marketer. He is also the co-owner of Actionera. It is a platform to help you build your own mobile app. Find details on Collaborate at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/collaborate. You can learn more about Actionera at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/actionera and find Iman at https://www.imanaghay.com. JIM PADILLA While I was attending one of the Collaborate events, Iman invited a guest speaker to that event. That guest talked a lot about actually making sales. He was Jim Padilla and he is my fifth mentor on this journey. Jim is a Global Impact Strategist & Investor and the founder and CEO of Gain The Edge. It's a done-for-you provider of industry-leading sales systems and unicorn sales professionals. Jim co-heads Gain the Edge with his amazing wife, Cyndi Padilla. The two of them have generated over quarter billion dollars in sales for a long line of high-level entrepreneurs. Jim's mission is to help purpose-driven thought-leaders untangle themselves from the day-to-day minutiae of seeking leads and sales, so they're free to amplify their impact - while scaling their business! Shortly after getting into Jim's world, he became my coach. Jim helps me build my sales systems and strategies. I've gone from being an entrepreneur to actually running a business. The transformation has been amazing. Jim joined me on episode 465 to discuss making sales. If you want to increase your sales, find this episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/465. JIM'S GENIUS Here are few nuggets from my conversation with Jim. From Struggle to Success: "And little did I know that, you know, 20 years later, I'd be making 1,000,000 of dollars teaching other people how to read the room and how to bend influence in their direction so you can be asset instead of a threat to the people who show up in your world, and then they wanna be able to buy from you and give you their credit card."— Jim Padilla 00:12:06 – 00:12:58. The Core of True Expertise: "What people need to dive into is they understand that you're an expert, but they really need to understand who you are as a person and why what you do matters."— Jim Padilla 00:19:07 – 00:19:11. Seeing Opportunities in Chaos: "All they see is all the problems that are in the world are truly just opportunities waiting to be solved if you know how to talk about it and know how to articulate it and to see things differently."— Jim Padilla 00:24:57 – 00:25:04. Maximizing Your Existing Network: "Most obvious buyers you have are the people who already bought from you."— Jim Padilla 00:44:07 – 00:44:10. Jim and Cyndi are amazing. Find them at https://www.gaintheedgenow.com. DAVE JACKSON The last mentor I want to share with you is the guy who became the inspiration for this podcast. In 2013 I was writing articles about podcasting for New Media Expo. Out of the blue, I got an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He was interested in having a conversation to see how we might support each other. During that conversation, Dave said he loved my articles. Then he asked why I didn't have a podcast of my own. Great question, Dave. If I'm writing about podcasting, shouldn't I have a show of my own. Shortly after that conversation, this show was born. And our friendship has continued over the years. Dave Jackson launched the School of Podcasting in 2005. He was inducted into the Podcasting Hall of Fame in 2018. He is the author of the book, Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. Over the years he has launched over 30 different podcasts with over 4 million downloads. Dave and I currently co-host the Podcast Review Show where we help podcasters improve. You can find that show at https://www.podcastreviewshow.com. Dave was a guest on episode 485 to talk all things podcasting. You can listen to that episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/485. DAVE'S BRILLIANCE Here are a few takeaways from my conversation with Dave. Viral Topic: The Importance of Mic Technique: "When I moved into this house had no carpet, and it was just this giant echo chamber. So the first thing I did was, like, okay. We need we need a carpet. We need some rug, something like that."— Dave Jackson 00:32:58 – 00:33:07. The Blue Yeti Misconception: "Technically, it's not a bad microphone, but what most people overlook is that thing can pick up, if you want, in every single direction. Well, that's just screaming, pick up the neighbor's lawnmower and everything else."— Dave Jackson 00:33:44 – 00:33:57. Mastering Freelance Success: "If I'm trying to position myself as an expert, I either want to interview people who know the people that should be hiring me or in some cases, just interview the people who should be hiring me."— Dave Jackson 00:37:54 – 00:38:03. Big thanks to Dave Jackson for all the help and inspiration over the years. Find Dave at www.SchoolofPodcasting.com. FIND YOUR MENTOR Those are six mentors who have had the biggest impact on my journey. There are so many other people who have inspired, helped, and collaborated with me over the years and through these 500 episodes. I would never have enough time to name all of them. From my wife Jen, to Jon Fugler and the various members of our mastermind over the years. From the clients, partners, and supporters, each has played a part in this journey. But most of all, I want to thank you. Without your support week after week and episode after episode, this show would never have reached 500 episodes. Thanks for being here. Thanks for allowing me to be part of your podcast journey. Let me know how I can help. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.
Most of us work in order to make money. I'm going to assume that's you. And making money is important. For this discussion, we're going to take a look at the concept of work you enjoy outside of money. My dad, Dan Miller, wrote the book, 48 Days To The Work You Love. If you haven't read it, go now to 48days.com and get a copy, just like over two million other people have done. Ultimately I'm looking at fulfilling work. You may not love it all the time. It may not feel like play all the time. Mine doesn't. But man, is it fulfilling. I don't see this as a luxury. The more fulfilled you are in your work, the better work you'll do and it will serve everyone best. You, your family, your friends, your customers, and the world. Your podcast gives you great opportunities to create multiple streams of income. The show is like the gateway for your clients to enter your world. After they enter, help them solve their problems with a specific stream of income. Dan Miller of 48 Days to the Work You Love joins us on this episode today to discuss how his podcast sits at the center of his revenue universe. ONE STREAM OF INCOME Before you can create multiple streams of income, you need to get your first stream producing income. Focus on one before you launch others. There is power in focus. There is a saying that is contributed to Confucius. Then again, many sayings are. The saying is, "The man who chases two rabbits catches neither." When your focus is divided, you accomplish very little. Get your first stream of income working before you launch the next. You will find much more success. I suggest you start with the easiest stream of income. The easiest is the one that is easiest for you. We each have our own super power. Leverage your strengths. Before we talk with Dan Miller, let's look at a few options for your first stream of income. Some of these links are affiliate links, one of my streams of income. When you purchase through an affiliate link, it doesn't cost you any more than it would to buy directly from the site. However, I may receive a small commission by promoting it. I only promote products I use and believe in. The last thing I want to do is promote something that isn't something I trust will help you. ONE-ON-ONE COACHING One-on-one coaching is typically the easiest place to start if you teach people how to do something. When you share your expertise to help people overcome their challenge, this stream of income is easy to set up. First, determine the outcome you help your client achieve. Next, offer that coaching to your audience with a clear benefit. You can do your coaching calls on Zoom or the phone. Have clients pay you through PayPal or something similar. My first client sent me a money order. Craft a simple agreement, so each person knows what to deliver and what they can expect. Now you're rolling. GROUP COACHING Group coaching is another option. This stream of income takes a little longer to get traction. With one-on-one coaching, you only need one person. For group, you need multiple people. You will probably start your group with one person and let it grow. Just let the one person know they will get personal attention until others enroll. As you enroll multiple people, it is much easier when you set up recurring payments through a shopping cart. It is a challenge manually keeping track of who paid and when payments are due. I use ThriveCart. They currently offer a lifetime deal, but that is going away soon. You can see if the deal is still available through my affiliate link at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/ThriveCart. COURSES Courses are a great way to do the work once and sell it multiple times. However, it takes consistent marketing. Don't believe if you build it they will come. You need to consistently get your course in front of your clients. When you create your course, solve one specific problem. I made the mistake of putting everything I know into my first course. Nobody bought it. Nobody wanted everything. They simply wanted to solve their most pressing problem. To create a course, you need a course platform. ThriveCart actually has a course platform built in called Learn+. You can see it on that same page at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/ThriveCart. I have also used Groove. It's an all-in-one platform that is pretty powerful. You can see that at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. I have also used Teachable for my courses. Teachable is easy to learn. However, they standard plan has recently limited users to five courses. I've outgrown that, so I've moved onto other platforms. There are many other course platforms. Do your homework to find one that is perfect for you. MEMBERSHIPS The next powerful stream of income is a membership site. This could be a combination of coaching, courses, and content. There are a ton of ways to set up your membership site. It really depends what you want to include and accomplish. There are plugins available for your Wordpress site, like WishList Member. You can use membership platforms, like Might Networks. The all-in-one platforms like Groove and Kajabi also have membership options in their systems. You can take a look at GrooveMember inside of Groove at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. Your membership platform will control your content, which members have access, and how they pay for that access. AFFILIATE COMMISSIONS Affiliate commissions are a great stream of income to get started generating income. The benefit of affiliate commissions is the ease. You don't have to build anything. You simply promote others and get paid when something sells. The down side of affiliate marketing is the work. You won't typically create repeat customers, because you are selling for somebody else. The provider will have the relationship. Just remember to vet the products and services you promote. Never be an affiliate for something you haven't used yourself or done complete due diligence to ensure the quality of the product and provider. By law, you cannot say you've used something or that it delivers a result unless you have used the product or service and receive that result. Be careful what you say. PRODUCTS You can also create a stream of income with products. You might write books, create software, or build apps. This is a great way to do the work once and sell it again and again. The benefit of products is the relationship. You can create repeat customers and lead them to the next step with you. The down side is the revenue and time. You won't make much off the sale of a book or app. You'll need to sell a lot to make any meaningful revenue. Products also take a long time to create. You don't typically write a book in a weekend. Therefore, let your product lead to something bigger. DAN MILLER Dan Miller has multiple streams of income. And his podcast sits at the middle of that network of goods and services. We continue our talk on Thinking Big. Part 1 and 2 was with Dr Benjamin Hardy who recently co-authored a book with famed business coach, Dan Sullivan, called 10x Is Easier Than 2x. Ben sent me an early copy of the book and I didn't pick it up until my Dad texted me saying he'd read the book and it was revolutionizing his business. So fittingly I brought on my Dad to discuss this 10x concept further. My Dad of course is…Dan Miller, author of 48 Days To The Work – and Life – You Love, host of the 48 Days To The Work You Love podcast and one of the most well known influencers in business and personal development. He's also a lifelong learner and for him to say, after a lifetime of successfully running businesses and today mentoring so many others in their businesses, that this concept is revolutionary to him, you're going to want to hear why. What we uncovered was the need to consider who you are, to entertain the 10x of impossible progress. It may or may not fit you, but there is a workaround to doing it anyway that fits exactly who you are. In the workplace and in life, great opportunity comes to those who set themselves apart. We're not talking about attention seeking or being better than others, but simply being clear and communicating what you can uniquely offer, which is the point. Whatever you do, you can do uniquely. Again, not better or brand new, but something coming from you in a new way, perspective, flavor or application. This is part 3 on Matt McWilliams and the message in his new book, “Turning Passions Into Profits.” In this episode I bring on Dan Miller, famed author of “48 Days To The Work You Love” and one of the premier experts and voices regarding turning passions into profits. Matt cites Dan as a teacher and mentor, so no more fitting person to continue this discussion. Dan is also…my father. We really land on the necessity and opportunity of standing out with what you can uniquely offer, and this isn't simply a discussion for work and business. Think about your personal life and those you are most drawn to and feel cared by. You will likely be very clear on what about them most stands out to you, and you can audit yourself for what you want people to feel from you. Wrapping up my series on Elliott Bisnow, co-founder of the Summit Series events, part festival, part personal development conference. His book, Make No Small Plans, gives focus to the entrepreneurial journey, and the power of hosting and attending events. One of the masters in both categories who I know personally, is Dan Miller, author of 48 Days To The Work You Love and host of the 48 Days podcast. I know him personally as…my Dad. I asked him to listen to my show with Elliot, episode 1038, then join me to discuss it. You're about to hear our conversation. As this is the Self-Help(ful) show and my focus is just that, this episode addresses some of why we want self-help, and it's to grow ourselves and live out our values, which we do, or want to do, in our work. And being an entrepreneur is a great way to, help ourselves. So here talked about what evidence you look for in being an entrepreneur. We then discussed what makes for great events in this day and age and how Dan has done it with so many events where it was more family gathering than seminar. A week prior to this recording we attended a podcast convention together and we share what we learned and the opportunities in both podcasting and events. Then we dwelled a good bit on just that, opportunity. In podcasting, event hosting, and so many areas of business endeavors, things are evolving at a more rapid pace than ever. The good news is it leaves the door open for innovation and entry for anyone who comes in savvy. A reminder you can find Elliott Bisnow's book, No Small Plans, anywhere, and connect with him and his events at summit.co. Dan Miller you can find at 48days.com or his podcast, 48 Days. I have a story for you. A case study of health turnaround and success for you. Dan Miller is the bestselling author of “48 Days To The Work You Love” and a prolific writer, speaker and coach. However at the end of 2018 at age 71 he found himself barely able to work. He shares the incredible amount of resources he sought for help, including his Primary Care Physician simply stating, “Hey, you're getting old, make peace with it.” Today he is back to more energy, vitality and overall wellness than he's experienced in many years. He said, “I didn't simply get back to where I was before my decline, I've far surpassed it.” As you'll hear in the show, he's now excitedly finalizing two new books for his publisher and planning out the next 20 years of his productive life. It's no miracle. It's just the basics. It's the things you can do too. Now at age 72, I'd pit his cognitive abilities and much of his physical abilities as well, against the average 50 year old. I believe you'll relate to much of what you'll hear in this candid conversation between Dan, Dr Randy James, and myself, as you found out…how Dan did it. What the story is.. And for disclosure, Dan is my Dad! Many of you will know him from his top ranked “48 Days” podcast. You can find him at 48days.com. For my 400th episode, I've reached out to 7 of my favorite podcasters to share the strategy they use to grow their business. THE BEGINNING This podcast actually started as a blog. After writing for a few months, Dave Jackson from School of Podcasting reached out. Dave is an amazing, generous expert in the podcasting space. I had listened to many of his episodes and knew what he was all about. One Saturday afternoon in 2013, Dave and I jumped on the phone. He told me he saw my stuff on the New Media Expo blog and liked what I was offering. Over the next hour, Dave and I talked about our past, what we were doing online and our visions for the future. We realized there were many ways we could help each other. At one point, Dave asked why I didn't have a podcast. Great question. Podcasters would probably be more interested in listening to a podcast rather than reading a blog. So, I pivoted. On that call, I decided I would launch my own show to help podcasters improve their content and give them more confidence in their show. The first episode of Podcast Talent Coach was published on July 19, 2013. I'd love to say I've published a show every week since. But, that's not the case. I've had plenty of battles with Impostor Syndrome and motivation. There was one summer early on when I wasn't sure I was on the right path. No new episodes were published for a few months. I finally got back on track and have been publishing fresh content ever since. INTERVIEWS Most episodes of the show have been solo shows. Just me sharing information to help you transform your information into entertainment. On Episode 100, I had the first voice on my podcast that wasn't mine. That episode featured other podcasters asking questions. Episode 204 featured my first pseudo-interview. It was actually a coaching sessing with Tony Muckleroy of Jeep Talk Show. This actually became one of my most popular episodes. Probably because Tony is so great. My first real interview happened on Episode 276. Zoe Routh joined us to talk about the ways she uses her podcast to grow her business. Over the years, I've interviewed a few other experts. But, most of my episodes are still solo shows. Teaching has been my strategy. This may change in the future. After 400 episodes, I'm starting to feel the itch to talk to others. That's the great thing about podcasting. It's your show. You can do anything you'd like. You make the rules. We'll see how things go. I just want to thank you for being on the ride with me. GROW YOUR BUSINESS On this episode, 7 of my favorite podcasters will share their strategy to use their podcast to grow their business. DAN MILLER When I first started my online journey, I started following Dan Miller. He is the best selling author of 48 Days To The Work You Love. He hosts the 48 Days podcast as well. I discovered Dan through Dave Ramsey. The year isn't so clear, but I believe the first product I purchased from Dan came in 2011. Here is Dan sharing how his strategy to use his podcast to drive his business. Thanks, Dan. Find Dan Miller at https://www.48days.com/listen/. DAVE JACKSON As I mentioned, Dave Jackson was instrumental in the creation of this podcast. He and I also host the Podcast Review Show together. You can find that at https://www.podcastreviewshow.com. Dave also uses his show to drive his business. Thanks, Dave. You can find Dave Jackson at https://schoolofpodcasting.com/episodes/. JON FUGLER While growing my business, I discovered Internet Business Mastery. While in that group, I met Jon Fugler. Jon wanted to start a mastermind and was looking for members. I took him up on the invitation. On February 18, 2017, I was sitting in the parking lot of the ice rink on the campus of Iowa State University. My son was there for a tournament. This was our first mastermind call. Over the years, our mastermind had a variety of members. But, Jon and I have been consistent since that first call. Jon has radio experience just like me. He played college baseball as did his boys. At the time, Jon was running Recruit Me to help students land college sports scholarships without hiring an advisor. He has a great story of getting out of that business and into his faith. Here is Jon. Thanks a ton, Jon. You can find Jon Fugler at https://www.freshfaith247.com. MARC MAWHINNEY There always comes a time when you realize you don't know what you don't know. That's when you need a coach. That came for me in March of 2019. Marc Mawhinney runs the Coaching Jungle Facebook Group. He hosts the Natural Born Coaches podcast and is an amazing coach. I discovered Marc while working through a program to improve my sales. One of the instructors in that course recommended Marc. I joined his group, listened to his show and hired him as my coach. Here is Marc's strategy to drive his business with is podcast. Thanks, Marc. You can find Marc Mawhinney at https://www.naturalborncoaches.com/episodes/ MIKE VAN PELT Mike Van Pelt and I connected in 48 Days Eagles with Dan Miller. I helped Mike launch his True Man podcast. Mike has a huge heart and helps men with his coaching. Here is Mike sharing his strategy to grow his business. Thanks, Mike. You can find Mike Van Pelt at http://truemanpodcast.com/. MICHAEL GRIFFITHS I am always looking for great ways to grow your audience and business. While working with Marc Mawhinney, I started pursuing joint venture partnerships. The power of partnerships is amazing. Referrals are also an amazing way to get in front of your ideal customers. One day on Marc's podcast, I heard Michael Griffiths. He is the founder of Referral Marketing Guru and hosts the Get More Referrals Today podcast. As a referral expert, of course Michael uses his podcast to build relationships. You can find Michael Grittiths at https://www.referralmarketingguru.com.au JIM PADILLA Now that I have build my courses and coaching programs, I need help creating a selling process. Enter Jim and Cindy Padilla. They run Gain The Edge and Sales Team Ready. Jim also hosts the Sales Team Ready podcast. Jim and cindy have been helping me get clear on my offers and build my selling process. It has been amazing. Here is Jim sharing how he uses his podcast to drive his business. Thanks, Jim. You can find Jim at https://www.gtenow.com. YOUR STRATEGY Big thanks to these 7 amazing experts for sharing their strategies with us today. Hit their websites. They are all experts and some of the best in their niche. It has been 400 episodes for me. Thanks so much for supporting me and the show. I appreciate all the time you've given me over the years. Are you ready to create your strategy? If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.
What do you want your listener to do when the episode is over? That is your call to action. Your goal may be to sell your product or service, get listeners to sign up for your webinar or simply grow your audience. Maybe you want your listener to support your cause, or visit your guests website. Before you begin to record your episode, you need to decide the outcome. What will your listener do when the episode is over? Begin with the end in mind. SELLING Some podcasters will tell me they are selling anything. They don't believe they are selling, because they aren't directing people to a sales opportunity like a sales page or coaching session. If you are trying to get your listener to take action, you are selling. When I was little, my brother and I would go to the grocery store with my mom. As gradeschoolers, you can imagine how bored we would get walking up and down the aisles. It didn't take long before Keith and I would tell mom we were going to find the toys while she shopped for flour and cans of corn. Grocery stores never had many toys. But, we would always find something we liked and wanted. We would return to mom and sell her on the idea why buying us the Silly Putty made total sense. Keith and I would offer to clean our room, or not ask for anything else for the next month. We were always making a deal. Sometimes it work. Other times it didn't. Either way, we were selling. If you are trying to get someone to take action, you are selling. SELLING IS EASY Joe Polish, founder of the Genius Network, once said great marketing makes selling easy and unnecessary. I completely agree. Selling is comprised of four steps. Step one of selling is building rapport with your prospect. You need to create some sort of relationship so the buyer believes you have their best interest at heart. This step represents roughly 40% of the selling process. Once you've build a bit of a relationship, step two is qualifying your prospect. During this step, you make sure you are right for your prospect and your prospect is right for you. As you are qualifying your prospect, you are making sure you can solve your prospect's problem. This step is roughly 30% of the process. Many people rush these first two steps. This is the foundation of all selling. Spend 70% of your time ensuring these two steps are done properly. When you do, selling will be easy. Step three is educating your prospect on your solution. This is where too many people begin. They jump right in telling people how their course or coaching or solution is the best. This step doesn't work, because they haven't spent enough time on steps one and two. They haven't build the foundation. This step should only represent about 20% of the selling process. That leaves step four, which is closing the sale. If you've done the process correctly, this short step should simply involve asking the prospect if they would like to move forward. This is only 10% of the selling process. I HATE SELLING Many people hate selling, because they rush to steps three and four. They've build no rapport and they haven't qualified their prospect. Do you like making friends? Of course, you do. We all like it when people like us. That's step one. Just make friends. Talk about their goals and dreams. Coaches tell me they want to grow their audience, so they can attract their ideal clients to their business. Maybe they want to leave their 9-to-5 and build a business of their own. As we talk, they dream. Spend plenty of time building rapport with your prospect. Slow down. During this step, you'll discover what they value. You will see where their priorities lie. They will also tell you what they are trying to accomplish and where they are struggling. Let them talk. Don't sell. Just build rapport. QUALIFY Once you have a solid understanding of their situation, begin discussing her struggles, challenges and problems. What has she tried that has worked and what hasn't worked. By discussing her goals and challenges, you'll begin to qualify her as a potential client. You will know if your solution is the answer to her problem. Ask a lot of questions. Ask, "Have you tried this?" "Have you considered that?" The more questions you ask, the clearer it will be whether or not your solution is right for her situation. Let's look at the coach that has come to me to grow their audience and use their podcast to drive their business. I'll ask what she has tried to grow the audience. Does she have a system and strategy? We'll talk about what she enjoys and what frustrates her. During this phase, I am trying to create a solution in my head that fits activities she really enjoys and also fits a program I offer. The questions I ask usually relate to my solution. I may ask, "Have you used podcast interviews to get in front of your prospective ideal clients who are not yet aware of you?" "Have you used JV partners to help you grow?" These are parts of my Podcast Profits Coaching Program. I want to know if she has tried it, if it has worked and if she enjoys interviewing. At this point, you've gone through 70% of the selling process and you haven't done any selling. However, she is beginning to see a solution form in her mind. THE SOLUTION Once I've built rapport and qualified my prospect, we like each other and I know my solution is perfect for her. If my solution isn't perfect, I'll give her some recommendations and we'll go our separate ways. I don't want people to buy solutions that don't make sense. However, my solution is usually a good fit if we have reached this point in the conversation. She has gone through many filters to get here. When I have the perfect solution, I will say, "I have a program that is designed specifically to help coaches grow their audience and attract their ideal clients. Would you like to hear a bit about it?" She will say yes, because she wants to be polite. I will then describe how my Podcast Profits Coaching Program solves her problems and helps her reach her goals. I know this program will work for her, because I've spent plenty of time in steps one and two. She also knows it will work, because she envisioned it during steps one and two. She helped me build the solution by the conversations we had. CLOSING The final step is asking for the sale. I simply say, "Is that something you would like to implement for your business?" That's it. We've already built the relationship, ensured the solution is right for her and explained exactly how my Podcast Profits Coaching Program solves her problems and helps her reach her goals. All that is left is answering a few questions and completing the sign up form. YOUR CALL TO ACTION Now, you may not be selling in the traditional sense of products or services in exchange for money. However, you are making a call to action within your podcast. Your call to action might be selling for money. It may also be inviting your listener to come again, asking him to visit your website, requesting that she join your mailing list, inspiring him to get involved with a cause or any other action. All of it involves selling. Joe Polish said great marketing gets people properly positioned, so they are pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to do business with you (or act on your call to action). Great marketing therefore makes selling easy and unnecessarily. This call to action is what your podcast is all about. You can build rapport with your content and end with a strong call to action. Get your listeners to pre-qualify themselves through the information you share. If your content gets them interested, motivated and qualified, your call to action will be much more effective. Send them somewhere to help solve their problems. If you have truly engaged your listener and created that strong relationship we've been discussing, your call to action should take care of itself. Selling becomes difficult when you are trying to get your listener interested. Selling before your listener is motivated is a challenge. Trying to sell to a listener that isn't qualified is hard work. If your listener isn't predisposed to taking action, you will need to sell hard. You need to do all of these with your content. Steps one and two can be done on your podcast before you ever get on a call with your listener. You can build rapport and qualify your audience through your stories and content you share on your episodes. Then, offer your call to action. Building relationships with your podcast involves telling great stories. Revealing things about yourself through stories makes you real. Your listeners get to know and like you. As you continue to help them over time, you build trust. When you have taken the time to build the relationship, your listener will be pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to do business with you. They will be ready to take action. Selling, in terms of convincing your listener to buy, will be unnecessary. Your marketing and engaging relationship will have them ready for your call to action. Do the hard work up front to make selling easy. SERVE BEFORE ASK To help you buid that rapport, serve first. Serve many times over. Then and only then will your call to action be effective. Shows like the "Dave Ramsey Show", "48 Days To The Work You Love" and "Smart Passive Income" are all designed to help their listeners first. Sure, these shows all have products to sell as the end result. However, they never begin with their product. The discussions on these shows always begin with the listener's needs in mind first. As you prepare for your show, determine what you want your listener to do when the show is over. Then, find great ways to help. Your help also builds trust. Your call to action should also lead them to additional help to get out of pain and solve their problems. ASK FOR THE ACTION After you've done the hard work building the relationship, don't forget to ask for the sale. I stopped by the quickie mart one afternoon to get something to drink. As I waited in line at the cash register, the gentlemen in front of me set his purchase on the counter. Among his items was a 2-liter bottle of soda. The bottle of soda was $1.69. The clerk said, "Did you know these are on sale two for $2? You can grab another and save yourself some money." The customers responds with, "Looks like I need to grab another bottle." By simply asking for the sale, the clerk doubled the purchase. The customer also benefitted by saving some money. In fact, everyone wins in this transaction. The store is paying the clerk an hourly wage whether he sells one bottle of soda or 100. The cost of the clerk's time to the store remains constant. Wages are the biggest expense to the store when figuring cost of goods sold. Therefore, by adding another bottle of soda to the purchase, even at the lower price, the store makes more money also. It all happened because the clerk asked for the sale. This week, review your show to ensure you are building those relationships. Start with the listener instead of your product or service Determine how you are going to help your listener with this episode Put a strong call to action at the end of the episode HERE'S MY CALL TO ACTION I would love to help you with your podcast. If you would like to improve your content, create an effective call to action and grow your business, I have a few openings for coaching clients. There are three things that need to be present for you to ensure this is right for you. This is where you qualify yourself. You need to be serious about making some money with your podcast. If you want to attract your ideal clients and grow your business, this is for you. Next you need to be willing to do a little work to implement the process. We will work together to build a customized plan for you, your show and your business. This will be a system you can rinse and repeat. But, it will take a little time and effort. If you have an hour a day to invest if building your business, this is for you. Finally, you need to be willing to have conversations and make friends like we discussed in steps one and two. We will use your podcast to generate more conversations with prospective clients. Then, we'll build your process to turn those listeners into clients. If you're willing to make friends, this is your program. But, we have to date before we can get serious, right? I'm offering a complimentary coaching call to a few candidates who are serious about their improvement. We need to see if we are a good fit for each other. There will be no high pressure sales pitch. We will have a conversation about your goals and challenges. We'll develop a plan that fits your style. If it clicks, we can discuss the Podcast Profits Coaching Program. If the call is not all you had hoped, no harm. We'll just continue on as friends. As I described earlier, it needs to be perfect for both of us. There is only room for a few. My calendar simply will not allow me to coach everyone. If you are interested … and serious … e-mail me at Coach (at) PodcastTalentCoach.com. Tell me you would like to have a conversation about building your strategy. We can get the conversation started. I look forward to our conversation. Some time ago, I was studying a martial art called Kajukenbo. My instructor was a very nice man with a lot of experience and training. And on one of those nights the man who had instructed him came to our class, observed and offered some instruction to the students of his student. On today's episode of the Off-Farm Income Podcast, I am lucky enough to offer you a similar experience. #967: I wanted to talk about calling. I keep seeing people get wrapped up in trying to find…feeling they must find, this elusive, one-thing, holy grail calling on their life and I wanted to relieve the tension and pressure and showcase that our ultimate calling or purpose is not so narrow. It's something everyone has and it's something you do in all roles of your life. This frees you up from thinking you have one, special application to apply this…calling. And what is a true calling anyway? So I brought on one of the world's premier experts on the subject, especially as it relates to your vocation, job, career, business…however you label it. That expert is…Dan Miller. Yes. We're related. He's my Dad. Bestselling author and renowned career coach of 48 Days To The Work You Love. 909: It's one thing to hear what a high achiever's habits are today. But what were their habits before they were a high achiever? I'm revising these habits shows for a while going forward in this manner, and today I bring you my guest from episode 907 where we discussed work and whether it must be so meaningful. Dan Miller. Renowned career coach and author of 48 Days To The Work You Love. And also, my father! He champions successful habits his audience and in this episode walks us through the habits he developed coming from an ultra conservative upbringing on the farm with Amish roots, to the best selling author who drives a tricked out Corvette today. What was his evolution out of the mentality from then to now, as his next birthday will ring him in at 75 years old. I think this format of “habits evolution” will give you more insight into the development of your own habits, then merely hearing what people have grown to today in their relative success! #907: What began as a discussion on whether our work must really be so important ultimately came to our need to know ourselves and what really fulfills us individually. And while yes, having meaningful work is profound to the joy of our lives, it's also not meant to be the end all to our purpose and calling, but a tool. I brought in Dan Miller, celebrated career leader and author of the now classic tome on work, 48 Days To The Work You Love. We had a conversation at a high, but deep level, regarding how we all perceive the value and importance of our work. I wanted to speak specifically to those who may be feeling stress and anxiety about finding the ultimate work opportunity. The “holy grail” and culmination of their life's purpose and calling. That can be so daunting and in this episode I feel we did justice in taking some of the pressure off the work and putting the impetus on us having a bigger view of our overall life focus. On the show today, I want to give you a few podcast examples that will help you in various areas of your show. These are podcasts that I feel do many things well that you can model. We will also talk about a few of my past episodes. After over 330 podcast episodes, you and I have discussed quite a few topics. I looked at my stats the other day and pulled up my 6 most popular shows. If you are looking for the episodes that have had the most impact, you can give these a listen to help you on your podcast journey as well. You can find a link to all of these podcasts in the show notes at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/examples. THE BEST Picking the best is always subjective. What I like you may not. That's the great thing about podcasting. If you don't like one host or show, you can probably find a dozen other shows on the same subject. The quality of podcast examples depends on the niche and your tastes. Just like radio formats. One size definitely does NOT fit all. I will give you a few that I feel do well in particular areas. You can take a listen and decide for yourself. INTERVIEWS In terms of hosts that conduct solid interviewers, there are three that I really like. Malcolm Gladwell on Broken Record does great interviews, though he isn't the only host of the show. The show is sort of album liner notes come to life. Broken Record brings you conversations with artists in a world without liner notes for a new audience of music lovers. Michael O'Neal on the Solopreneur Hour podcast is a great interviewer. He creates real conversations. They can sometimes be a bit long. Solopreneur Hour is a podcast of lively conversations, candid insights and bold advice for proudly unemployable people who are primed for real prosperity and fulfillment. Michael talks with the best and brightest solopreneurs from all walks of life. Barbara Corcoran has a lot of fun with her inteviews on Business Unusual. You know Barbara from Shark Tank. She reminds me of my mom and has tons of fun. I really like the older episodes before COVID hit. Her conversations with listeners were a lot more engaging. In the description, Barbara says, "Life is too short to waste your time practicing someone else's fancy theory on success. I give you the straight talk and the confidence to get there." Though I'm not a big fan, Howard Stern does amazing interviews. He usually asks exactly what the listener is thinking. CO-HOSTS When it comes to co-hosts, you need to ensure hosts have different personalities and opinions. If both are the same, one of them isn't necessary. Matthew and Elysha Dicks host Speak Up Storytelling podcast. This is a great example of co-hosts who compliment each other quite well. Unlike most storytelling podcasts, which offer you one or more outstanding stories to listen to and enjoy, this podcast seeks to entertain while also providing some specific, actionable lessons on storytelling. Screw The Nine To Five podcast is hosted by husband and wife team of Jill and Josh Stanton. They are real, sometime brash and always funny. This is a great example of two personalities really playing off each other. They have the same goal, but different approaches. BUSINESS Shane Sams on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast does a great job at giving you ideas you can actually use. This isn't just tips and tricks found on the internet. Shane has done it. The thing I love about Shane's podcast is that he promotes his membership site and courses without being over-the-top salesy. This is a great example of using your show to drive your business without being a total infomercial. Marc Mawhinney hosts the Natural Born Coaches podcast. He helps coaches. Pretty obvious. Love the title. Marc uses his podcast to boost his JV relationships. He is typically interviewing experts in the online space. They provide great information. At the end of most episodes, they invite you to a webinar. This is a great example of leveraging interviews to drive revenue. SOLO One of the best solo shows I listen to is 48 Days To The Work You Love with Dan Miller. Dan spends 48 minutes every week answering questions. He is engaging and captivating having a conversation directly with you while doing it all on his own. Dave Jackson over at School of Podcasting also does a solid solo show. Carrying a show by yourself and connecting with the listener isn't easy. Dave does it every week. If you're looking for another great show about podcasting, check out Dave. Let's get into the six most popular episodes of Podcast Talent Coach. YOUR VOICE The first is Like Your Voice – PTC223. "I hate the way I sound." I hear that complaint quite often. Many people do not like the sound of their own voice. It is quite common. It is also quite natural to dislike the sound of you own voice when hearing a recorded version of it. When you talk, the bones in your head vibrate adding to the qualities you naturally hear. When you hear a recording of your voice, those vibrations are absent causing your voice to sound different to you. The natural bone vibrations also make you do some unnecessary acrobatics with your voice when using headphones. The bone vibrations combined with the enclosed nature of your headphones cause you to hear the big announcer voice in a much different way the listener hears it. You tend to speak in ways you don't normally speak in everyday conversation. The thing we fear most is not death but humiliation. Listeners can tell in the first few words if you are excited and in the zone. Your inner critic never congratulates you. There are seven steps you can take to make your voice sound more natural and get you on the path to enjoying the sound of your voice. You will discover all seven in this episode. DOWNLOADS The next is How To Increase Your Downloads – PTC209. Most of us want to grow our audience, increase downloads and become more influential in our niche. I recently conducted a survey asking about your biggest challenges with regard to your podcast. The most frequent response revolved around ways to increase podcast downloads. If you were to list your top three struggles with your show, would one hurdle you list be getting more listeners and engagement? When podcasters reach out to me for their free strategy session, I ask them how I might help with their podcast. Promoting the show, gaining listeners and increasing podcast downloads is most always part of the answer. You are not alone. We all want a bigger audience. Whether you have 100 listeners or 10,000 listeners, I'm sure you would like a few more. There are 6 steps to growing your audience. You can hear it in episode 209. YOU'RE AN EXPERT Next is 3 Ways To Position Yourself As An Expert – PTC227. Once when I was grabbing a quick bite to eat at the local fast food restaurant, I was reminded we are all an expert at something to someone. After ordering my food, I pulled up to the drive thru window of the fast food restaurant to pay. My total came to $4.38. I handed the kid in the window $5.38. The amount completely puzzled him. He looked at the currency for quite some time. I was beginning to think he didn't realize I needed change. After what seemed like two minutes, he looked around for his manager. When he realized his manager was helping another customer, he looked back at the money trying to devise a plan B. The kid finally stuck his head into the window and asked, "Are you good at math?" I said, "The total was $4.38, right?" He replied with, "Yeah." I said, "You owe me a dollar." "Oh, that's what I thought," he replied with relief as he ducked to the register to retrieve my dollar. At that point, I realized we are all an expert to somebody. Even people who do not normally deal in American currency could probably guess that $5.38 minus $4.38 equals $1. To this kid, I looked like a genius. You may not feel you are an expert in your niche, because you don't have the experience or success equal to others. Just realize you have more experience than the beginner. You are always a few steps ahead of someone else. If you think about where you were two years ago, you are much more experienced than a person in that position now. Help those folks make the two-year journey to get to the point where you are now. There are 3 Ways To Become An Expert In Your field. We discuss them in episode 227. LAUNCH The next episode is What Do You Need To Start A Podcast – PTC248. It seems so overwhelming. Launching a podcast looks so technical and confusing. What do you need to start a podcast? It really is much easier than it appears. You can truly have a show up and running in four weeks. When I was launching my podcast, I had been in radio for a couple decades. I knew how to create a great show. What I didn't know was how to get it on the internet, on Apple Podcasts and out to the world. I knew how to create an .mp3, but how do I make that .mp3 an actual podcast? I watched a ton of YouTube videos. It felt like the more I watched, the more confused I became. It seemed everyone had their opinions without a real "right" answer. I had almost too many options. Which were the best? In episode 248, we cover the six easy steps to follow to get your podcast up and running. Don't overthink it. Done is much better than working for perfection. ATTENTION The next most popular episode of Podcast Talent Coach is How To Capture Attention – PTC219. Have you noticed a lot of the business interview podcasts sound the same? We are hearing the same guests answer the same questions time and time again. How do you become unique in this sea of sameness? Storytelling can transform your podcast. I was on a coaching call with Arman the other day. He is a great public speaker who is launching a podcast to compliment his business. Arman has a knack for telling stories in his speeches. His past life experiences create compelling tales. We were discussing the power of stories in his show. There is a subtle difference between telling stories in a speech and telling stories in a podcast. During a speech, few people will get up and leave if you don't hold their attention. While listening to a podcast, if you are captivating, there is a good chance your listener will go find something else to enjoy. There is no guilt in turning you off. Therefore, you need to capture their attention right out of the box and hold it. Stories can be a powerful tool with your podcast. People do business with people they know, like and trust. Stories help you develop that knowledge, likability and trust. Your stories define you and will touch many more people. The stories you tell and the details you include reveal many things about you. That begins to develop that like and trust. Stories help you connect, motivate and inspire. There are four parts to the storytelling structure. We cover those in episode 219. COACHING The episode that was the most popular for the longest time is Behind The Scenes Of A Podcast Coaching Session – PTC204. Dave Jackson and I reviewed the Jeep Talk Show on the Podcast Review Show. Tony Muckleroy, one of the hosts of the show, reached out to me for a follow up review. On this episode, I take you behind the scenes of that coaching session to show you how things work. It is my hope there are a few things in this session that might help you improve your show. Tony hosts the Jeep Talk Show with his two co-hosts Josh and Tammy. They started the podcast about 8 years ago. The primary reason Tony reached out for coaching is audience growth. Their show has plateaued around 1,700 downloads a month. Tony is hoping to discover how they might increase their audience and grow the show. During our coaching session, Tony and I discuss the points Dave Jackson and I made on the Podcast Review Show, the progress the hosts have made toward those points and where they might go from here. Jeep Talk Show has some passionate followers. The team posted our coaching session as an episode of their podcast. It is Tony's hope that sharing the session with his audience might get listeners to provide the show with additional feedback. This episode features the coaching session with Tony and his show. It was episode 204. LISTEN There you go. 15 different episodes that you can check out and use to overcome some of your struggles. What are motives of later age that provide fulfillment? This was not a retirement focus so much as just asking how motives help and hurt in the latter years. What came up however was the profound value of having work you don’t want to retire from as the primary motive objective. As I’ve been in Florida for an extended time I had my Dad, Dan Miller of 48 Days To The Work You love fame, join me. He is 73 and wakes every morning excited about what he’ll accomplish in the next 20 years, while many of his peers are just bored. Passing the time. The stats show people who retire decline in health and well being due to a lack of purpose. Which makes this an episode relevant for anyone of any age to listen to. Life is a balancing act. We all have priorities, hopes and dreams, financial responsibilities, and family. Sometimes these can be out of sync and we can end up doing work that doesn’t fulfill us. Many military spouses put up with work they don’t like for little money because of limited options. Many veterans struggle to find work after the military that they can earn a living at and enjoy. But what if you leverage things like your personality, natural skills, and your passions to meaningful work. My guest, Dan Miller is the author of the New York Times best-selling 48 Days To The Work You Love. He has over 140,000 people subscribed to his weekly newsletter and his 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 1% of all podcasts. His mission is to help listeners find – or create – work they love. Dan and I talk about how it’s possible for the military community to make money by doing things you’re passionate about and how it can change your life. Our conversion left me completely inspired, I hope you find inspiration in it too.
Wow! We just hit the 50th episode milestone, and it’s been an awesome run! I’ve had a great time talking to millionaires and future millionaires about their stories and how they’ve changed their mindset and built wealth. Today’s show is a bit different. I’m taking time to celebrate TMC’s 50th Episode with some of our past guests, a couple of which have had an impact on my life. Special thanks to Dan Miller of 48 Days for the impact he’s had in my life and professional development. Also, special thanks to JV Crum III who’s helped me transition from the JOB mindset into an Entrepreneur mindset and helped me launch The Millionaire Choice Show! Guest: Mark Padolsky, The Land Geek https://thelandgeek.com Armed with only $3,000, gut-wrenching fear, and absolutely no real estate experience… Mark bought his first few parcels of raw land in 2001. Today Mark is the author of Dirt Rich, the ultimate guide to helping you build a passive income. and owner of Frontier Properties, a very reputable and successful land investing company, and has been buying and selling land full time since 2001. By focusing on working smart, not hard, he has completed over 5,500 land deals with an average ROI of over 300% on cash flips, and over 1,000% on the deals he sells with financing terms. Prior to his land investing success, Mark had a high-stress, soulless corporate job, and felt trapped in a state of solo-economic-dependency (i.e. his income stopped as soon as he stopped working). Escaping solo-economic dependency changed Mark’s life in so many positive ways that he decided to teach, coach and mentor others to help them achieve their financial goals. Even though Mark invests a lot of his time helping others, he stays actively involved in running his land investing business, and is dedicated to teaching the most current and relevant “real world” land investing methods to his students. The Difference Between A Pitch And Service With True Help – Episode 190 Making money with your podcast doesn't need to be seen as a bad thing. You shouldn't feel guilty trying to generate revenue with your podcasting efforts. If you are offering something of value for your listeners while serving them well, selling something of greater value should be the next logical progression. [The Powerful Podcast Interview Workshop is now open, but closes Sunday night. Enrollment is limited to 24 attendees. Learn more HERE.] MAKING MONEY The key to making money with your podcast is serving. You must serve your listener well first and foremost before you can every offer to sell. If you haven't built trust with your audience, any offer will simply be seen as a pitch. If I don't know you, how do I know you have my best interest at heart with this product or service? A sales pitch is defined as a talk or way of talking that is intended to persuade you to buy something. Service is defined as the help provided to a customer by someone. It could also be the work done or help provided, especially for the public, the person or an organization. Service doesn't say anything about being free. The difference is persuasion. If I have to convince you to buy something, I am making a sales pitch. If I am offering something you want and need that will help you, I'm offering service. Serve first, many times over. Then and only then can you effectively sell. Shows like the "Dave Ramsey Show", "48 Days To The Work You Love" and "The Audacity To Podcast" are all designed to help their listeners first. Sure, they all have products to sell as the end result. However, they never begin with their product. The discussions on these shows always begin with the listener's needs in mind first. WHY IS SELLING BAD? Why is it bad to sell? Why must podcasting be only altruistic? If I have something that might help you solve your problems, why would it be wrong to recommend it to you while making a few dollars at the same time? If you loved mowing grass, would it be right to expect you to mow my grass for free? You love to do it. Why should I pay you? If it is acceptable to charge you for mowing your yard, why isn't acceptable to earn some money for helping you with your business? As you prepare for your show, find great ways to help. SELLING IS EASY, RIGHT? I was listening to an interview with Founder and President of Piranha Marketing, Inc. Joe Polish. During that interview, Joe said great marketing makes selling easy and unnecessary. Marketing is simply the process of providing your audience useful information. Marketing is defined as the business activity that involves finding out what customers want, using that information to design products and services, and selling them effectively. The process of marketing, by definition, is three steps. Find out what your customers want. Design products and services for that audience. Then, sell them effectively. How do you find out what your customers want? You create a relationship with them. You offer information they can use. You test things. You give them the "what" for free. Eventually, you can sell them the "how: after you have designed the product around those wants. Polish's statement was bold. As he went on to explain himself, Polish made perfect sense. In fact, his comments were very similar to the marketing and branding information we've been discussing with regard to your podcast. Polish said great marketing gets people properly positioned, so they are pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to do business with you. Great marketing therefore makes selling easy and unnecessarily. Consider any long form sales letter you've read or watched. Or, platform presentation you have seen where the speaker gives you great information for about 75 minutes and then pitches his product for the last 15. The majority of the information in that content is information you can use. If you choose to not buy, you have still received information you can use. You have been helped. You have been served. You are also pre-interested and pre-motivated for the product. Toward the end of the content, the pre-qualification takes place. If you are a podcaster who does interviews, and you seek to get better, create unique conversations and be seen as a pro, then my Powerful Podcast Interviews course could be exactly what you need. This is a pre-qualification. "If … then". My audience is saying to themselves, "Yeah, I want to have interviews that are different from all the other people in my niche. I want to be seen as a podcaster who belongs with the big guys. I want guests to tell me this is the best interview they've done. Tell me more." If you have used your free content to truly engage your listener and create that strong relationship we've been discussing, the selling should take care of itself. Selling becomes difficult when you are trying to get your listener interested without the relationship. Selling before your listener is motivated is a challenge. Trying to sell to a listener that isn't qualified is hard work. If your listener isn't predisposed to taking action, you will need to sell hard. When you have taken the time to build the relationship, your listener will be pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to do business with you. They will be ready to buy. Selling, in terms of convincing your listener to buy, will be unnecessary. Your marketing and engaging relationship will have them ready for your call-to-action. Do you need help with your podcast? 6 People Who Can Help You With Your Podcast – Episode 152 Surround yourself with the best people and success can be had. Over my years in radio, I learned time and again that I could accomplish so much more by getting help and mentoring from the right people. As I ventured into podcasting, I quickly found the people that could mentor me and help me move forward toward my goals. Today, I want to share with you a few people I think might be able to help you on your podcasting journey. Some I know personally and work with closely. Some have mentored me from afar through their work and resources. Whichever method you choose to use, find the people that can help you get to your goals quicker and achieve more than you ever thought possible. School of Podcasting – Dave Jackson The first person I want to introduce you to is Dave Jackson at School of Podcasting. If you have listened to my podcast for any length of time, you have heard me mention Dave. He has been my mentor, helping me learn the technical side of podcasting. Dave's coaching and tutorials have helped me more than anyone I have encountered. My podcast actually started out as a blog. Back in early 2012, I was writing about the art of podcasting while learning the technical side and preparing to launch my show. Less than four months into it, my writings were being published on the New Media Expo site. Shortly after I began writing for New Media Expo, Dave saw my stuff and reached out. Dave was already on my radar, because I had discovered his website when I was doing my original research. I simply hadn't considered reaching out to a guy who had been doing it for about 7 years at that point. He was there near the beginning. Dave's gesture reaching out to me was a fantastic surprise. We had a great conversation that lasted about an hour. Here was a guy that had been podcasting since 2005 that just wanted to get to know more about what I was doing and how we might help each other. That is what I absolutely love about podcasters. The conversation eventually led to a bit of a partnership. Dave and I kept in touch working on various ideas together. We met up at New Media Expo a few times. Finally, we teamed up when I joined Dave's “Podcast Review Show” podcast. We review podcasters and help them improve. [You can appear on the Podcast Review Show and get reviewed HERE.] Prior to that partnership, Dave help me multiple times with my website, podcast, and technical aspects of my show. He has truly been there and done that. Dave knows his stuff. If you have questions about your feed, website or other technical aspects of your podcast, I highly recommend you use Dave's knowledge and tools. He does some one-on-one coaching. He has resources on his website. You can also get deal on gear through Dave. [Find information on Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting HERE.] Audacity to Podcast – Daniel J. Lewis Daniel J. Lewis is another podcaster that helps people launch and improve their own podcast. He shares his knowledge of the audio software Audacity and web platform Wordpress. You'll learn all about equipment, software and skills necessary to podcast. His show was named the #1 technology podcast in 2012. Daniel and I met through Dave Jackson. After following his show for quite some time, Daniel and I finally met at New Media Expo and have since developed a bit of a relationship. The thing I love most about Daniel and Dave is their honesty and flexibility. They won't push you toward their favorite microphone. They will give you honest reviews and options that fit your needs. For instance, do you want or need a $60 microphone or $360 microphones? They teach you the differences and why. Daniel has a great lead magnet called “20 Things You Should Do Before Every Podcast Episode.” You learn how to get the room quiet, how to prepare, what tools to gather and more. He calls it his preflight checklist. This will make your recording session so much more efficient. If you are serious about podcasting, check out Daniel's Podcasters' Society. This is a group of great podcasters together in a learning and sharing environment that can really help you improve your show. Daniel and I are discussing making some of my material available within Podcasters' Society each month. Give it a look. [Find information on Daniel J. Lewis' material HERE.] The next few guys are just a few of the guys I have used as a long-distance mentors. The books and material written by these guys have done more for my business and career than anyone I can name. 48 Days to the Work You Love – Dan Miller Dan Miller and his book 48 Days To The Work You Love is where my journey began. Dan inspired me to pursue the work that I love. I originally discovered Dan and his work by listening to the Dave Ramsey Show. If you are looking for your purpose, check out Dan's material. He is a true entrepreneur. The thing I love about Dan is his simplicity. Dan isn't knee-deep in technology, like a lot of online business people. Though he has embraced the digital landscape more recently with the launch of his membership site, he is more about creating simple money-making opportunities that are right in front of us. Whether is it reselling cars, selling digital content or running a gym, he has done it all. Dan can see a business opportunity anywhere. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love. Dan's most popular resource is "48 Low or No Cost Business Ideas". These are great. When you read this e-book, you'll say to yourself, "Why didn't I think of that?" Dan has great ideas. The inspiration is a huge bonus. [Find information on Dan Miller's material HERE.] Internet Business Mastery – Jeremy Frandsen & Jason Van Orden Jason Van Orden and Jeremy Frandsen at Internet Business Mastery have great information to help turn your knowledge into a business. I first discovered them during a session at New Media Expo. That presentation turned me onto their podcast. Internet Business Mastery is not only a great podcast, but a course that has helped me refine my business focus. Both Jeremy & Jason have launched various other businesses. They have been there and done it. In the Internet Business Mastery Academy, you learn how to develop your ideal freedom lifestyle. That leads into your freedom business blueprint. You learn how to design your single motivating purpose, create your money magnets, develop your list and more. This has been one of the best investments I have made. The course has really refined my business plan and philosophy. If you are building an online business, this material can help you move you forward. [Find information on Jeremy, Jason and Internet Business Mastery HERE.] Platform University – Michael Hyatt Michael Hyatt and Platform University have helped me organize my message and build my platform. I like organization. Checklists are my friend. Step-by-step processes that allow me to add some creativity on top of it are tools I enjoy. Michael Hyatt has a great membership site with Platform University. It is based on his book Platform, which is a must read as you develop your podcast. There is great learning inside the community. He only opens membership a couple times a year for enrollment. I got in early on this one and haven't looked back since. Inside Platform University, you will find Master Classes where Michael interviews other experts to dive deep into various subjects each month. In the Backstage Pass area, Michael shows you how he operates his platform. There are live member calls each month, member makeovers and so much more. There is so much information inside Platform University, I don't have enough time to get through all of it each month. I use the great material I find most useful and dip into the other stuff when I find time. When I have questions about specific topics, I can usually find the answer inside Platform University. [Find information on Michael Hyatt HERE.] There you have six people who can help you move your podcast and business forward. Dave Jackson can help you with the technical aspects of your show. Daniel J. Lewis has tools that can help you with your software, skills and search for your show. Dan Miller can help inspire you with new ways of thinking about business. Find what you love. Jeremy Frandsen and Jason Van Orden at Internet Business Mastery can help you lay an amazing foundation for your purpose and business. Michael Hyatt can help organize your work to help you be more efficient in building your platform. Do you need help with your podcast? E-mail me any time at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. How To Create An Effective Call-To-Action In Your Podcast – Episode 150 Are you looking for more listeners? Are you trying to build your list? Do you have a product you are trying to sell? How is it going creating that engagement? Are you actually asking your listener to do exactly that? Why would they join your list or get your lead magnet or buy your product of you don't ask? Let's figure out how to get your listeners to act. It was 2006 when I fell in love with "The Power of Cult Branding" and the work of BJ Bueno. That was the year I attended Dan O'Day's PD Grad School. It was a unique conference for radio program directors. One of my favorite conferences every year. I'm bummed that it isn't around any longer. Dan would get some of the best minds as speakers. His guests were not only radio thought leaders, Dan would guests in the worlds of branding, marketing, online and research. The conference was amazing. BJ Bueno's session was “The Power of Cult Branding”. It is also the title of his book. As I sat in that hotel ballroom with 100 other radio programmers over ten years ago, BJ flipped the way I thought about branding and marketing. For ten years, I had been selling the great features of my station. We were more entertaining. We had your favorite music. We had the best contest. We had longer music sweeps and fewer commercials. And, we were telling our listeners all about it Then, BJ showed a video his company produced. It featured Bob out on the sidewalk in front of the office building. Bob was wearing a sandwich board that was simply a huge photo of himself. We was telling everyone that passed by about his attributes. And … he was doing it with a bullhorn. It was classic. At the very end, the video stated, “People are more interested in themselves than they are about you. That is why ads that work are more like mirrors than bullhorns.” See it here: MIRRORS-VS-BULLHORNS VIDEO It is ten years later and we hear it a lot. Make your marketing outward-facing. Focus on your target listener. Sell the benefits of your product rather than the features. There are many ways to say it. But BJ was the first that really opened my eyes to it. When you are creating your call-to-action, make it a mirror. Focus on the needs of your avatar. That ideal listener. What do you want them to feel? What problem are you solving for her? What benefit are you delivering? SELLING IS EASY Great marketing makes selling easy and unnecessary. That is according to Joe Polish. As we discuss this, think of selling as simply getting your listener to take a particular action. Joe does a few podcasts. You can hear him on the “Genius Network”, “10x Talk”, and “I Love Marketing” podcasts. Each issue of Success magazine is accompanied by an interview CD. On one particular disc, Success publisher Darren Hardy was talking with Joe when he made that very statement. You may not be selling in the traditional sense of products or services in exchange for money. However, you are making a call-to-action within your podcast. It may be selling for money. It may also be inviting your listener to come again, asking him to visit your website, requesting that she join your mailing list, inspiring him to get involved with a cause or any other action. It all involves selling yourself. Polish's statement was bold. As he went on to explain himself, Polish made perfect sense. In fact, his comments were very similar to the marketing and branding information we've been discussing with regard to your podcast. We have discussed the call-to-action in previous episodes of Podcast Talent Coach. We simply need to determine what we hope to accomplish with our podcast episode before we begin recording. In summary, Polish said great marketing gets people properly positioned, so they are pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to do business with you (or act on your call-to-action). Great marketing therefore makes selling easy and unnecessarily. If you have truly engaged your listener and created that strong relationship we've been discussing, the selling should take care of itself. Selling becomes difficult when you are trying to get your listener interested. Selling before your listener is motivated is a challenge. Trying to sell to a listener that isn't qualified is hard work. If your listener isn't predisposed to taking action, you will need to sell hard. Building relationships with your podcast involves telling great stories. Revealing things about yourself through stories makes you real. Your listeners get to know and like you. As you continue to help them over time, you build the trust they seek. Do the hard work up front to make selling easy. SHOUTING WILL NOT HELP YOU So, how do we build that relationship? We go back to the bullhorn video by BJ Bueno. We focus on our listener rather than ourselves. You can't shout your way into a person's trust circle. They only way to gain trust is to add value. Give them something they can use. Building trust is the foundation of revenue generation for your podcast. As you build trusting relationships with your podcast, continue to ask yourself, “How am I helping my listener?” Continue to give, and the trust will develop over time. When you begin every discussion with your product, needs or wants, people will tune you out. You will begin to sound (and be treated) like advertisements for used cars. Shouting doesn't work. Your listener won't care and will rarely return. Serve first, many times over. Then and only then can you effectively sell. Shows like the “Dave Ramsey Show”, “48 Days To The Work You Love” and “Smart Passive Income” are all designed to help their listeners first. Sure, they all have products to sell as the end result. However, they never begin with their product. The discussions on these shows always begin with the listener's needs in mind first. As you prepare for your show, find great ways to help. Your help may come in the form of entertainment. You may serve as companionship for your podcast listener. Help them find other forms of companionship as well. If your podcast is only one hour per week, there are 167 more hours in the week that aren't occupied by your show. Your listeners will surely need more companionship to fill a few of those hours. Help your audience fill those hours, too. Are you building trust, or are you shouting? ASK FOR THE SALE After you've done the hard work building the relationship, don't forget to ask for the sale. One afternoon last week, I stopped by the quickie mart to get something to drink. As I waited in line at the cash register, the gentlemen in front of me set his purchase on the counter. Among his items was a 2-liter bottle of soda. The bottle of soda was $1.69. The clerk said, “Did you know these are on sale two for $2? You can grab another and save yourself some money.” The customers responds with, “Looks like I need to grab another bottle.” By simply asking for the sale, the clerk doubled the purchase. Start with the listener instead of your product or service Determine how you are going to help your listener with this episode Put a strong call-to-action at the end of the episode Do you need help with your podcast? Who Else Wants A Unique Brand? – PTC Episode 076 A memorable brand that becomes a household name. It is like the Holy Grail. So many companies strive for it, but so few achieve it. Why is that? A brand is a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name, a brand name, a particular identity or image regarded as an asset, or a particular type or kind of something. But, when we think of a brand, we think of so much more. There is so much more emotion in a powerful brand. Under those definitions, Honda is a brand. However, it is a much different brand than Harley Davidson. Star Trek is a brand, although a much different brand than Battlestar Galactica. Oprah is a brand. I don't think anyone would equal Oprah's brand to that of Sally Jessy Raphael. Each of those iconic brands were available at the same time their counterpart was making a name for themselve. Yet, the iconic brands became huge, powerful, valuable names. That's not to say the other brands were not familiar or valuable. Those competitor brands simply did not become the astronomical brands of the segment leaders. Why is that? What can you learn from these iconic brands that can help your podcast become a name, identity or image, but a name that evokes powerful emotion from your listener. How can you create fans instead of a casual audience? Here are six steps you can put into use this week to begin to develop your unique brand. Develop Your Style Create everything you do in your own style. Powerful brands have a style all their own. Your style is your way of doing something. Are you friendly? How about challenging or argumemtative? Maybe you are the Everyman. Is your podcast a narrative or instructional? Are you explosive, soothing or euphoric? Do I hear sarcasm in your show? Are you a friend to everybody or the guy they love to hate? Do you take risks or play it close to the vest? Each piece plays into your style. You can only stand out among all other shows when you create your own unique style. You must then make sure everything you do is consistent with that style. Many new broadcasters try to emulate the style of their hero or mentor. They attempt to imitate the styles they hear from other broadcasters. Unfortunately, copying doesn't create a unique style. Copying typically creates a watered-down version of some other style. When creating your content, be yourself and find your own style. Some of the greatest broadcasters didn't start the ascension to the top until they abandoned the attempts to broadcast in the style they thought others desired and began being true to themselves. Oprah Winfrey quit trying to be a traditional news anchor. She also quit doing the typical tabloid, daytime talk show like Sally Jessy Raphael was doing at the time. When she began to create the show she always desired, she went to the top of the game. Howard Stern began as a radio DJ sounding like every other radio DJ. He was playing the records and spouting the lines written by management while going nowhere. If you watch “Private Parts”, Stern's autobiographical movie, one of the classic scenes is Howard trying to recite “W-N-B-C” just like his boss wants everyone to do it. When Stern decided he was going to do radio his way, he began to make a name for himself. He also went to the top. Rush Limbaugh followed a very similar path. His bland radio name was Jeff Christie. He followed the format designed by somebody else. Limbaugh made every attempt to fulfill the typical radio DJ stereotype. He also got fired again and again. When he decided to broadcast in his style and true to his beliefs, he began his rise to the top. Adam Corolla made his climb when he took full control over his style and show. He was climbing the DJ ladder in Los Angeles. Corolla had some decent television work. He then decided to create his own show in his own style via podcast. That began his rise as one of the biggest podcasters in the world. All of these broadcasters made the decision to stop copying others. They all created shows that were true to their style. They each also stay true to their style in everything they do. You will never hear Rush sound like Howard. You'll never mistake something Oprah says as something Adam might say. Being true to their style isn't something that takes conscious effort. It comes easy to each of them, because it is true to who they are as people. Be true to yourself. It will make it easy to create everything you do in your style. Define Your Character With Stories I'm not simply talking about your integrity. By character, I mean all of the attributes that create you, as in character in a play. The purpose of your show is to attract an audience. Whether you want to monetize that relationship, encourage a call-to-action, or simply create an audience for your ideas, creating the audience is where you begin. The stories you choose to tell reveal how open you are to others. Your openness is a sign of trust. Trust is a big piece of a relationship. Reveal things about yourself through your stories and you'll begin to build trust with your listener. The details you include tell your listener what you value. If the listener feels you value things they too value, you solidify the relationship. People like to hang out with similar people. If your values are opposite of your listener, you may also attract them. It is like a love/hate relationship. They may dislike it, but they continue to listen. This often happens when talking politics. What you find entertaining will be evident by the stories you tell. Since people like other people who have similar tastes, revealing those things you find entertaining will also build the relationship. Stories also have the power to demonstrate your vulnerability. Stories can show that you are a real person. Your listener will see you as approachable. They also may begin to see you as a friend. That is when true relationships begin to form. Iconic brands use their story. Oprah uses her story of her upbringing and career building by breaking down barriers. Her weight loss. Her struggles to cut a new path in daytime talk. Howard's story of defying “The Man” and doing it his way inspires others. Rush was told he would never make it on the air and should consider radio sales. Harley Davidson was a joke in the motorcycle industry. Harley owners had two bikes … one to ride and one for parts. Harley now stands for independence and “take no flack” attitude. Foster a relationship with your listener by revealing things about yourself through stories. Stories will define your character. Don't Just Fill Time You never catch Oprah just going through the motions. She would never have typical guests on her show. When others were interviewing the co-star of some moving, Oprah would interview the President of the United States. Oprah has Tom Cruise jumping on her couch. You never knew what was going to happen on Oprah's show. When you fill time, you waste time. Your listeners have come to your podcast, because you have made them a promise with your brand. They believe they will receive some sort of information and entertainment from your show. Your listener will only give you a few minutes to begin delivering, or they will be headed to the next podcast. Consistently add value for your listener at every opportunity. Either make the show shorter, or prepare better. It is usually a solid rule of thumb to prepare more content than you will need. This will allow you to always deliver valuable information. Seth Godin does a fantastic job delivering brief bits of valuable information with his blog. He even carries this through to the manifestos published by his Domino Project. Seth wastes very little time. Once he has made his point, he wraps it up. Your listener is expecting something from your podcast. Deliver continuously on the promise of your brand. Don't just fill time. Be Memorable When other shows would give away a television, Oprah would give a television to everyone in the audience. Now, everyone does it. If you want to keep your listener coming back show after show, you need to make them remember to come back. You need to remain top-of-mind for your listener. That is the purpose of audience engagement. Make your listener remember you for something specific about your show. As you build your show, make it about one thing. Find one particular thing that will be remembered. If you try to be all things to all people, you will water down the show. Everything will be nice. However, isn't usually truly memorable. You will get lost in the millions of messages your listener receives on a daily basis. Find the magic. Your listener should remember one thing about your show this week. What will that be? Stir emotion. Make it amazing. Bring your listener back. Be memorable. Move Beyond Information Make your show emotional. That deep connection creates relationships. The goal of our podcasts is to create strong relationships with our audiences. We can take those relationships and move our listeners with a call to action. To achieve that strong relationship, we need to move beyond information to engaging entertainment. Dan Miller, author of “48 Days To The Work You Love” could simply explain how you might find a new job. Instead, Dan instills the belief in his listeners that there is more to work than a paycheck. He stirs emotion describing how you can turn your passion into your career. Dan uses that emotion to turn his job finding information into engaging entertainment. Financial information is turned into entertainment on “The Dave Ramsey Show” when Dave turns debt into the enemy. He doesn't simply walk you through the steps to become debt free. Dave helps you find that burning desire to escape the shackles of debt. He makes you envision the possibility of “living like no one else”. His help becomes engaging entertainment. That is the reason his show is extremely popular and he is very wealthy. Our shows can be powerful when we build relationships and move our listeners with a call to action. Those relationships happen when we move beyond information to engaging entertainment. Risky Stands Out It was a risk for Rush Limbaugh to step out and be incredibly opinionated regarding politics. Now, there are hundreds of shows that do the same thing. It was a risk for Harley Davidson to embrace the bad ass lifestyle. Today you can see middle aged guys riding their bike to the office. It was a risk for Oprah to walk away from the standard daytime tabloid drama that made her successful. You cannot flip through the stations today without finding a dozen copycats of Oprah's style. However, none of them achieved the success of Oprah. As we develop meaningful relationships with your podcast, we in turn build credibility that will support our call-to-action within your show. To develop strong relationships, you need to create engaging entertainment that will get you remembered by your listener. To be remembered, you must stand out. You stand out when you are loved. You are remembered when you are hated. You fade into the background when you are plain, vanilla and trying to not upset anyone. If you don't stir strong emotions, you are easily forgotten. When we create, we expose our perspective. We open ourselves to criticism. It is natural to want your thoughts, views, art and creation to be accepted by everyone. To avoid being disappointed, we often play it safe. Those fantastic, memorable personalities are usually both loved and hated. Rush Limbaugh is loved by the conservatives and hated by the liberals. Dave Ramsey is loved by the conservative investor and hated by credit card companies and whole life insurance salespeople. Dr. Laura would consistently be critical of her callers. Yet she would receive more callers than she could handle on any given show. Safety lacks creativity. It is risky to be truly creative. However, that is really the only way to get noticed. Safe blends in. Risky stands out. I'd love to help you with your podcast. Post any questions or comments you might have, or e-mail me at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. When Did Marketing Become Taboo? I was listening to Daniel J. Lewis on "The Audacity To Podcast” Sept. 15th episode “How To Deal With Negative Feedback Toward You”. When did commercials become bad? Here is the comment/quote: "I feel like I just listened to an hour long infomercial. Daniel, I recognize your need to cross-promote and I realize that your income comes from podcasting. I feel overloaded with commercial information and have quite a difficult time separating out the real content from the commercial content. It's just too much. Sorting out the things I would consider using from the things I have tried in the past but didn't work from the commercials just wasn't worth the hour I wasted this afternoon listening to your podcast today.” Daniel goes to great lengths to avoid being self-promotional. He mentions his products at the end or when it is contextually relevant. Hence the “I have a tough time separating out the real content from the commercial content”. If one blends into the other, it fits with the content. Daniel hardly creates his podcast to be one big commercial. On the other hand, why are the product mentions so bad? How do you find out about great products? How did you find out about the last great movie you saw? How did you discover the last great book you read? Didn't someone tell you about it? Regardless if that person was a friend or part of a marketing message, that communication helped you discover new things. That is what marketing is all about. Sure, not every marketing message is going to be tailored to your needs. There will be some that might miss the mark. It could be the mass mailing you received from the pizza joint down the street because you have a family of 4. It could be the political flyer you received because of your party affiliation. Is it that difficult to ignore the irrelevant? Throw it out. So, how do we make our marketing message relevant? How do we make the message valuable instead of an interruption? Are You Shouting? You can't shout your way into a person's trust circle. They only way to gain trust is to add value. Give them something they can use. Building trust is the foundation of revenue generation for your podcast. As you build trusting relationships with your podcast, continue to ask yourself, “How am I helping my listener?” Continue to give, and the trust will develop over time. When you begin every discussion with your product, needs or wants, people will tune you out. You will begin to sound (and be treated) like advertisements for used cars. Shouting doesn't work. Your listener won't care and will rarely return. Daniel does the opposite in “The Audacity To Podcast”. He usually starts by helping his listener. Then, if it fits, he will recommend a product or service to his audience. Serve first, many times over. Then and only then can you effectively sell. Shows like the “Dave Ramsey Show”, “48 Days To The Work You Love” and “The Audacity To Podcast” are all designed to help their listeners first. Sure, they all have products to sell as the end result. However, they never begin with their product. The discussions on these shows always begin with the listener's needs in mind first. Develop the friendship by delivering companionship. Are You Delivering What They Seek? People listen to podcasts, the radio and other audio for companionship. They don't want to drive alone. People have an inner desire to be around other people. Companionship is the reason people listen to your podcast, even if you are selling something. Your listener will always ask, “What's in it for me.” Make your listener feel comfortable, as if they are spending time with a friend. When people listen to guys like Adam Carolla, they feel like they know him. Women feel like they could actually hang out with Ellen DeGeneres when they watch her show. Leo Laporte comes across as your friend when you listen to his tech podcast. Each of these shows are about that comfortable connection. When you make your listener feel comfortable, they will come back time and again. You are their companionship. Are you delivering what they seek? This week, start with your listener in mind. Ask yourself, “What is in it for them?” I want you to feel confident about your content. You will not please everyone. Focus on your one target listener you have defined using the Target Listener Worksheet at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com. If you upset a few people, they either get over it or they would never be your customer in the first place. At least you are doing something to make them care. You Never Know Who You Might Help PTC Episode 054 I received a piece of feedback from Kenn Blanchard the other day. He said he was inspired so much by my “chit chat” episode that he went back into the studio to completely rerecord his latest episode. Kenn creates a few podcasts. I listen to “Black Man With A Gun” He recently launched a second called “Motorcycle Radio”. We talk a lot about helping people with your podcast. As you create your content, keep in mind that you never know who you might be helping or how much that help may mean. Gary Vaynerchuk has an entire chapter in his book “Crush It” devoted to care. It is probably the easiest chapter you will ever read. It is also possibly the toughest chapter to execute well. Extra Mile It is unfortunate in business today that "going the extra mile" isn't even necessary to stand out most of the time. Being consistent and delivering on your brand's promise will usually make you better than most of the competition. It amazes me that delivering a simple recap after the job is complete to one of our clients can create astonishment on their part. They are so numb to the average lack of care from their other suppliers that any sense of attention will get them to take notice. I've seen many, many bands go through the motions. I am not trying to make excuses. However, It's like a couple trying to get back together after a breakup. The relationship ended for a reason the first time. Getting together again may be good for a beer. Any longer will probably only make you realize why you broke up in the first place ... even when you're making hundreds of thousands of dollars to do it. Trust Circle You can't shout your way into a person's trust circle. Serve First Serve first, many times over. Then and only then can you effectively sell. Shows like the 48 Days To The Work You Love, School of Podcasting and Internet Business Mastery are all designed to help their listeners first. Let's Help Each Other I would love to answer any question you might have. I have been in broadcasting for well over 20 years. Coaching on-air radio talent has been part of my day-to-day role since 1995. Studying and developing marketing and promotional campaigns for our radio stations and clients is also something I do on a regular basis. If you could use some help in any of these areas, please shoot me an e-mail at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. Your questions will help me refine my show. You will help me select topics. It will also make the show much more enjoyable for you. I would love to hear your questions. If you could take a minute to shoot me an e-mail, or even comment on any of my posts that may have helped you, I would truly appreciate it. Making this show better is always my goal. Let me know how I can help you. In turn, let's help each other. I'd love to help you with your podcast. E-mail any questions or comments you might have to Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. Effective Call To Action - PTC045 I was listening to an interview CD that accompanies each issue of Success magazine. Publisher Darren Hardy was talking with Founder and President of Piranha Marketing, Inc. Joe Polish. During that interview, Mr. Polish proclaimed great marketing makes selling easy and unnecessary. Selling is Easy You may not be selling in the traditional sense of products or services in exchange for money. Do the hard work up front to make selling easy. Shouting Will Not Help You You can't shout your way into a person's trust circle. Start with the listener instead of your product or service Determine how you are going to help your listener with this episode Put a strong call-to-action at the end of the episode Let's Work Together I would love to help you with your podcast. If you would like to improve your content, call-to-action and business, I have a few openings for coaching clients. You need to be serious about making some money with your podcast. It may not be millions. However, you need to have the desire to make a little money. We will work together to build a customized plan for you, your show and your business. We have to date before we can get serious, right? I'm offering a complimentary coaching call to a few candidates who are serious about their improvement. We need to see if we are a good fit for each other. There will be no high pressure sales pitch. We can review your show to see if we work well together. If it clicks, we can lay out a coaching plan for you. If the call is not all you had hoped, no harm. We'll just continue on as friends. There is only room for a few. How To Develop More Podcast Confidence Self-confidence is a battle we all face. Most recently, I received nearly the same question. How do I become comfortable as a speaker? We have discussed this topic in the past on the Podcast Talent Coach podcast. In episode 012, I offered tips to become more comfortable with the timber and sound of your voice. This week, I would like to give you a few ideas to use to develop more confidence in your content. I had a coaching call and received an e-mail in the past couple weeks that included this topic. Both podcasters were unsure of their speaking ability. They felt they may lack authority on their topic. I had a coaching call with a gentleman who had recently launched a new podcast. His career to this point had involved public speaking and presenting. He was self-conscious of how he sounded on his podcast. He asked if he should get a voice coach. The second question came in an e-mail. "So far I have interviewed and recorded 3 people and when editing I'm realizing how much I hate my voice and because of that I feel unsure about putting anything out. Though the desire to podcast and be a liable presence is there is it possible to have a nervous sounding voice and still taken seriously? I don't know why I sound so timid and unsure because these people I'm interviewing are so far of people I know but as soon as I press that record button my presence seems to change. Do you have any tips? I hope there is still a chance for me. I hope this is just a newbie problem and something that I can eventually overcome." We all face the inner critic. We are unsure how we can sound like an authority in our niche. What can we do to develop more confidence in ourselves as we create our content each and every week? This week, we discuss four steps to become more comfortable & confident with your content. BE YOURSELF A great podcast is a great relationship. It is just like creating a great brand. In order to develop that solid relationship, you must be yourself. You can't fake it. When you try to be someone or something you are not, you will not sound authentic. Eventually, the truth will come out. Have you ever met someone you had admired from afar, only to have them do something that didn't fit with your image of them? Maybe it was a baseball player, or a movie star, or a politician or a musician. You met them with great expectations of an encounter with your hero only to find out they were rude and average. It turned out they were only being who they thought they should be for the public when really they were someone completely different in real life. Everyone has their flaws. That is what makes them human. Howard Stern has flaws. He makes his flaws part of his show. Domino's Pizza admitted the errors of their ways with their cheap, low quality pizza. They laid it out for the world to see in their marketing. Your listener will accept your flaws. They will feel like you are “one of them” when you admit your flaws upfront. Don't be afraid to expose yourself. When your listener discovers you are something other than the character you portray, the bond of trust will be demolished. Your relationship will be forever damaged. Build a solid brand. Be yourself. YOUR STYLE Create everything you do in your own style. She also quit doing the typical tabloid, daytime talk show. When she began to create the show she always desired, she went to the top of the game. Howard Stern began as a radio DJ sounding like every other radio DJ. He was playing the records and spouting the lines written by management while going nowhere. When Stern decided he was going to do radio his way, he began to make a name for himself. He also went to the top. Rush Limbaugh followed a very similar path. He had a cheesy radio name. MOVE BEYOND INFORMATION The goal of our podcasts is to create strong relationships with our audiences. REVIEW YOUR SHOW Review your show on a regular basis. Actually listen like a listener. That is the only way to improve. Many hosts finish recording a show and think, “That was pretty good. What's next?” They might recreate parts of the show in their head to determine what might make the show better next time. Usually, there isn't much time spent actually reviewing a show. There are so many other duties to handle. It's on to the next thing, which is probably editing, posting, and promoting the show. In order to make your podcast better, you need to spend quality time listening to the show. Play it back. Grab a pad of paper and write down the parts that jump out at you. Jot down the “oh wow” moments. Take note of the sections that didn't work exactly as you planned. You will only find these moments when you listen like a listener. The show will sound much different to you when you listen back than it did as you were recording it. You will hear things you didn't notice as you were focused on creating the content. Words that you overuse will suddenly become noticeable to you. Once you have created the lists of good and not-so-good, create two more lists. First, determine how can you create more of the “oh wow” moments on the show. How might you incorporate into the show more of the great content that worked? Second, make a list of ways you can eliminate the parts that weren't polished enough. Get on the road to show improvement. Review your show on a regular basis. To Do This Week 1. Be yourself. Tell a story on your podcast this week that will reveal something about you. 2. Do everything in your own style. Start by defining that style. 3. Move beyond information by defining what is in it for your listener. Stir emotion. 4. Review a past episode while actually listening like a listener. I'd love to help you with your podcast. E-mail any questions or comments you might have to Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. You can also find tools to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com.
