Gwinnett County police were called out to a Sugar Hill home on Tuesday morning and were in a SWAT standoff. Police said they responded to a home near Sycamore Summit NE, which is in the vicinity of Sycamore Elementary School. According to Daily Post news partner Fox 5 Atlanta, police said the situation began when Brookhaven officers attempted to serve a warrant at the home. Neighbors said they heard shots and a male suspect barricaded himself inside the home, Fox 5 reported. Police said the others who lived in the home were outside and no one appears to have been injured. Head over to Gwinnett Daily Post dot com for more information. Gwinnett County police are asking for people who were in the area where a Norcross teenager went missing last summer to come forward in case they have any information about what happened to her. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said 16-year-old Susana Morales disappeared on July 26, 2022 while she was walking along Singleton Road, in unincorporated Norcross, to her home, which is located on Santa Anna Drive. Morales sent a text to her mother at 9:40 p.m. on the day of her disappearance and said she was one her way home, but she never arrived. Police are looking for anyone who was in the area of Singleton Road, Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Oak Loch Trace on the night of Morales' disappearance to step forward. Morales left her family's home at about 6 p.m. on the day of her disappearance and walked to a friend's house, which is located nearby. Valle said a phone location app showed Morales appeared to be walking along Singleton Road, in the direction of her home, from Windscape Village Lane between 10:07 p.m. and 10:21 p.m. The phone then showed she was somewhere on Oak Loch Trace between 10:21 p.m. and 10:26 p.m., and she continued to be in that area until her phone was either turned off or died. Morales is described as a Hispanic female who has curly brown hair, brown eyes, two nose rings and a pierced lip. Valle said she is about 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 117 pounds. Police have released two photos of her. Anyone who has information about Morales' whereabouts is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers, which is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to Morales' safe return. The Gwinnett County Republican Party announced it will host a niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during its Black History Month program this weekend. The Gwinnett GOP's program will be held during its monthly breakfast at 8:45 a.m., on Feb. 4 at the party's headquarters, which is located at 80 Boulder Brook Circle in Lawrenceville. Alveda C. King will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will also feature speeches by FallBack Production Studios co-founder Lucretia Hughes and retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran Charles Lollar. Iraq war veteran Takosha Swan will provide a musical performance. Anyone who would like to attend the event can register at Gwinnett Republicans dot com. Although former Gwinnett resident Lou Llerandi retired from coaching baseball more than a decade ago, he's still in the game.  In 2018, Llerandi, who coached and taught at Duluth and Norcross High Schools, established Llerandi Gloves, providing baseball and softball players with an alternative to high-priced brand-named equipment.   Although the baseball glove market isn't an easy one to break into, Llerandi said he's sold about 1,000 gloves and touts that while players can selected stock-model gloves, he can also custom-make a mitt from a variety of web and color options. He's also sold a lot of infield training gloves (which are particularly small), softball gloves and even a couple of left-handed catcher's mitts.  A Tampa native, Llerandi said he sells Japanese Kip Leather gloves for $290, steer hide gloves for $250 and cowhide for $180, prices he said include shipping and embroidery. The gloves are made in China, at the same manufacturing plant utilized by Marucci Sports and Under Armour.  A big moment for Llerandi and his brand came this past spring when the Odessa (Texas) College Wranglers, who bought gloves for the team, finished third in the NJCAA Division I national tournament.  The company also has endorsements from two professionals. Carlos Tosca, who some may recall as Fredi Gonzalez's bench coach for the Atlanta Braves from 2011 to 2016 and at the turn of the century managed the Kansas City Royals for a couple of years, is a friend of Llerandi's and offered his support. Shelby Pendley, a veteran softball professional who was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, has also given her endorsement.  Noting that most major college baseball and softball programs have equipment agreements in place but Division II, Division III and NAIA schools do not, Llerandi looks forward to the potential of the coming year.  The Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored Berkmar High School teacher Lloyd Williams with its Outstanding Teacher in American History Award. Club officials said the award is determined “by the candidate's knowledge of American history and the readiness that it is shared with students, the spirit of patriotism and loyal support for our country and constitutional government, the ability to relate history to modern life” and that the teacher require excellence at all times from students and enjoy a good rapport with them. The award includes a certificate, a monetary award and a challenge coin that states the DAR objectives of historic preservation, patriotism and education. Williams has taught at Berkmar High School for 16 years. He represented his school in the “American History” grant, which led to his leading workshops and presentations to other teachers of history. According to the Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Williams personally developed much of the material for several electives in the social studies field, including contemporary and controversial issues as well as ethnic studies, all in an effort to provide a meaningful experience for his students that will carry them into adulthood as lifelong learners. Williams' colleagues stress what an interactive and innovative approach he uses to engage his students, as well as his generosity to fellow teachers, sharing the content he has created for student treasure hunts and the means to understand events such as the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Westward Expansion as well as many more current and important events that make up our American history. Williams will now be considered as a candidate for the DAR State OTAH award, which will be announced in February. Grayson repeated as Gwinnett County ninth-grade girls basketball champions with a 49-46 win over Norcross in the tournament finals this past Saturday at Lanier. The Rams, who finished the season with a 13-3 record, defeated Lanier 50-39 in the semifinals. They are coached by Bill Batchelor. Members of the championship team are Danielle Tatum, Zaria Belyeu, Logan Kilgore, Lily Davis, Sami Bradford, India Davis, Carley Davis, Amaia Coley, Destiny Anifowoshe, Janaya Johnson, Nyomi Blakey, Dorothy Robinson, Jurnee Roberts, Brianna Williams and Marley Schook. Today's guests are people who are near and dear to Matt's heart. Jeff and Laura Sandefer, the founders and creators of Acton Academy, are the people who started it all. What started as something they wanted to build for their own children has grown into an alternative education program with locations across the world. After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd's of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City. Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students. Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy. As an entrepreneur, Jeff founded his first company at age 16 and went on to found or co-found seven successful businesses. As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff's students five times voted him the school's Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepreneurship professors in America. A native of Texas, Kyle earned his bachelor's degree in history at Angelo State University, then an MA in history from Texas Tech, before earning his Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky. In 1995, he began a long academic posting as the Snell Family Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University. While in Tempe, Kyle published like a man possessed. He speaks worldwide, including at Bill's mother's retirement community - Longhorn Village - in Austin (his mother loves Kyle!). And a PS for this episode - we experienced some audio difficulties that we mostly but not completely fixed, being the amateurs that we are. Also, Dr. Longley's computer notifications "beeped" several times, attesting to his popularity. And we also corrected Dr. Longley after recording as to the correct pronunciation of Lima, Ohio! Episode 52: The Power of Playing Games in the ClassroomLet's have some FUN!! Today's show was so much fun to record and it just so happens to be all about having fun! On this episode, we are chatting with Nicole Manley from Teaching in a Top Knot about how to implement game playing in a special education classroom. Nicole shares all the pros of playing games with your students from...learning social & emotional skills to incorporating content to teaching those life long lessons of how to be a good loser and a graceful winner. And then she also gives us tips of how to address some of the challenges that come up with game playing like managing student behaviors during this more unstructured time, how to pay for the games in your classroom and what to say to others when they tell you you're students can't be learning because they're playing. After recording the show, I got to thinking about how playing board games with kids at home is most likely a lost art in a lot of families because of technology. Kids gravitate to those fast paced, instant gratification activities like video games and phone apps instead of old-fashioned board games and card games, but there are only so many skills you can learn while engaging in technology. That's why implementing game playing within your classroom is so super important!Nicole shares with us...What role playing games in the classroom hasThe social & emotional benefitsChallenges teachers might face as they implement game playing in the classroomHow to get set up and stock your game closetHow to support academic content through the use of game playingAnd MORE!!Tune in to hear all about the benefits of game playing in the classroom!Nicole was named Teacher of the Year for her district by the local Lions' Club.  She was also recognized as Outstanding Teacher by the PTA and as a leader for individuals with disabilities by GASELPA.  Nicole is active in special education reform at the district level and is a charter member serving on the Special Education Advisory Committee where she helped to create her district's Special Education Manual. Most important, Dr. Vemuri is living with cancer and continuing his treatment. And although he is now retired, he states that he has not slowed down, offers medical consultations, and maintains an active lifestyle by playing golf and tennis. His perspective is worth a close look: I have no control over the course of my stage IV lung cancer. The only control I have is how I react to it. During our conversation, we explore his goals to live a positive life, his perspective about dealing with adverse events, and the importance for health care professionals to help patients deal with uncertainties. He writes about knowing that he cannot alter the inevitable but also stresses the importance of positive thinking even in the direst circumstances of living with cancer. Buster Dunsmore is an Associate Professor of Computer Science who both researches and teaches software engineering at Purdue University. While computer programming can be accomplished by one person, software engineering requires a team of people. Software engineering is a current need for industries. There is not as much of a demand on individual programmers because software engineering teams can create a software package in a much shorter time, 2-3 months versus 1 year if only one person tried to create the same software package. Dunsmore relates the teamwork aspect of software engineering to putting together a big puzzle. Some of the best skills a person can bring into this field of study are good problem solving and communication skills. Dunsmore mentions a collaborative platform, GitHub (https://github.com/ ), which is a software repository used by many freshmen at Purdue that allows students to access and test each other's software. He also tells us not to worry if you are unable to take a coding class in high school. Not only does Purdue not require incoming freshmen to have taken a programming class in high school, but Purdue offers Introduction to Coding classes for students with no experience. Dunsmore was inspired to become a professor/teacher based on his own experiences as a student. When the opportunity came up, he volunteered to teach a freshman level course. He made a vow to himself that if he was ever in a position to teach a freshmen level computer science course, he would make improvements so future students could have a better experience than him.      Dr. Dunsmore's interest areas include software engineering, software architecture, agile methods, software metrics, Java, C++, C, JavaScript, cgi software, object-oriented design and programming, and information Systems. He has been a recipient of the awards Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award for Purdue University. He was chosen as a Founding Fellow of the Purdue Teaching Academy. Dr. Dunsmore has extensive legal and industrial consulting experience. He has written several technical articles and is coauthor of two books.

Today's guests are people who are near and dear to Matt's heart. Jeff and Laura Sandefer, the founders and creators of Acton Academy, are the people who started it all. What started as something they wanted to build for their own children has grown into an alternative education program with locations across the world. After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City. As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff’s students five times voted him the school’s Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepreneurship professors in America. Jeff went on to co-found the Acton School of Business, an MBA program perennially ranked by the Princeton Review among the best in the nation. In 2012 The Economist honored him as one of the top fifteen Business School professors in the world. Jeff is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he served for over twenty years on the school’s governing committees. He was a longtime director of the Philanthropy Roundtable and National Review magazine and one of the youngest members ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame. Our tribute to outstanding teacher/coaches episode, in which we feature two individuals who are making a difference in young people’s lives and helping during this incredibly difficult time of transitions in high school and college. We go from coast to coast to catch up with them virtually and pick their brains about best practices and inspiration (Florida to California). First, CJ Albertson has a number of accolades in his personal running career, but perhaps the ones he is proudest of are from his home town in Fresno, where he continues to coach or run almost every distance event available. He is Clovis Community College's head Cross Country and Track coach, and in this episode shares his experience transitioning to coaching and teaching- as well as how current pandemic has effected both and young runners, as well as what we can do. His positive attitude and competitiveness shine through, which is how this Clovis Community College track/cross country coach took 7th place in the US Olympic Trials this past February, and earned him a world record for the indoor marathon. He set the indoor marathon record April 13, 2019 in New York, completing 211 laps around the 200-meter track at The Armory's New Balance Track & Field Center in 2 hours 17 minutes 59.4 seconds. CJ is a tenacious in all he does, including academics. Not only a trainer and coach, he now dons the title of professor, teaching in his field of Health and Science at the community college level. He shares some of the advice he has gathered about maintaining balance as a student athlete, and finding ones fullest potential as a runner. Lastly, we should note that Albertson has been signed over the past weeks by Brooks Running, which will allow him to continue his training as a professional athlete and Olympic hopeful well into the future! Second, another amazing engaged teacher/coach, Adriane Wunderlich continually uses her position as an educator to reach out to potential athletes and educate with body-mind-spirit holistically. Adriane attended Indiana State University as an undergrad, where she ran varsity track and cross country, and went on to obtain her MA in Kinesiology & Exercise Science from Indiana State. She was called to move south, and went on to coach at both St. Leo University and Texas A&M University in assistant coaching roles. Currently she is at Tampa Catholic High School, as head Cross country and Track coach for both men's and women's teams, and has been there for the past 3 years. Overall, she explains how experience is the best teacher, and how suffering can be a great teacher, particularly when distance runners push themselves to serve a higher good, team or reflection. Why so diversely engaged with students? She wanted this to be a part of her legacy and career. Because of this commitment, she returned to school to obtain her masters degree in theology, hoping to make her impact on youth more than just athletics, and be able to use faith as a jumping off point in both her teaching in the classroom and coaching on the field. Adriane shares why this time is especially difficult for some of her runners and the track team she was rebuilding, but also the creative ways in which students are coping. She also talks about the multitude of ways that the high school is honoring seniors and giving them a place to feel the weight of their accomplishments and culmination of the right of passage to college for so many. In 1980, he was selected as Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science, and then in 1998 he was nominated by Purdue for the Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year. Also, fun fact, Dr. Dunsmore is the coauthor of the books Software Engineering Metrics and Models and Internet Resources for Tourism and Leisure. Today, Dr. Dunsmore is here to give us a faculty member's perspective on something I think a lot of us haven't spent much time thinking about or planning for. That's right, we're discussing team projects in and outside of the classroom. We're talking about why employers are looking for students who can work successfully on a team, and how completing projects beyond your class work can mimic the world of industry that you are going into and stand out on a resume. This discussion is for all of us, regardless of major or field. Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Dunsmore.
