If you're looking for an adventure to start the new year, why not take an inner field trip? This week, host Paula Felps sits down with Leesa Renee Hall, a mental health wellness advocate and author of the Inner Field Trip workbook, which helps explore what drives us, what oppresses us, and helps us identify our personal biases. Armed with that information, Leesa says we can change the way we move through the world and transform our relationships — which seems like a great way to start the year. In this episode, you'll learn: What it means to go on an inner field trip. How going on this journey is helpful to your mental health. Why self-reflection is such a powerful tool for healing.

Because critique is our fangirl love language. And because talking about books is pretty magical. I'm Jesse. kelly [00:00:29] And I'm Kelly. And in this episode, we are discussing A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney, the second book in the Nightmareverse series. And I didn't write a plot synopsis before recording. So fuck it, we'll do it live. [laughs] The novel picks up right after the battle that ended the first book. Alice is grounded and people are in trouble. And lots of villains come out of the woodwork and Alice has to go into Wonderland. But she also accidentally goes to Japan. And then there's large battles and that's what happens. [laughs] jessie [00:01:09] Chaos ensues. There's chaos. Lots and lots of chaos. transition [00:01:13] [bright, whimsical music plays] jessie [00:01:18] All right. Initial reactions, I think, as you all know at this point. I love L.L. McKinney. I follow her on Twitter and I just love everything about her. She's great. So you have to know that I love this book, too. It was fast paced and super fun. I loved getting some additional POVs this time around. So I stan, I guess. It's much easier to ignore the darker parts of ourselves—the wounds, the fears, the biases, the anxieties. Sloshing around in our inner territory is scary, but there is freedom in the truth. And the more we can talk about our shadows without getting defensive, the more we can accept our humanness and start to heal ourselves and the world around us. Only then we can go deep AND go home to ourselves.  Pixie Lighthorse is an artist, healer and author who uses words as medicine to “wander with people through the hard stuff.” Her most recent work, Goldmining the Shadows, primes us for an ongoing inner dialogue with damaging influences (both internal and external), so we can begin the process of liberation and restoration. On this episode, Pixie joins me to define what it means to do shadow work and explains why it's crucial to explore our own inner territory.  Pixie describes our quest for balance between thinking/doing and feeling/being, offering insight around how to access the most truthful parts of ourselves from a liminal space. She also shares the idea of rigorous honesty, discussing how we can recognize our shadows as they come up, examine our subconscious biases, and avoid the push/pull in our relationships. Listen in to understand the role of rest in accessing clarity and wisdom—and learn how to liberate yourself by accepting what IS.    Key Takeaways  Pixie's work in wandering with people through the hard stuff  How Pixie defines shadow work and why it's so crucial  Why Pixie's best writing ideas come from the liminal space  The quest for balance between thinking/doing + feeling/being  The idea of rigorous honesty and how it impacts relationships  How to examine our unconscious bias without defensiveness  Recognizing shadows when we use absolutes or complain  The danger in overidentifying with our specialization  How we harm ourselves/others out of loyalty to our wounds  Why we can't access clarity or wisdom when we're tired  How communication makes room for cooperative experiences   The shadow side of hope and how we use it as a mask  Pixie's insight around the freedom of accepting what IS    Connect with Pixie  Pixie's Website    Resources   Goldmining the Shadows by Pixie Lighthorse  Boundaries and Protection by Pixie Lighthorse  Prayers of Honoring by Pixie Lighthorse  Prayers of Honoring Voice by Pixie Lighthorse  Prayers of Honoring Grief by Pixie Lighthorse  Leesa Renee Hall  Healing Night: The Science and Spirit of Sleeping, Dreaming, and Awakening by Rubin Naiman PhD  Daring to Rest: Reclaim Your Power with Yoga Nidra Rest Meditation by Karen Brody  Daring to Rest Sleep Series  Yes to Rest Friday - Daring to Rest Yoga Nidra Naps for Women Facebook Group  SHARE

In this fascinating conversation Leesa Renee Hall and I discuss how white supremacy limits the ways that black people are perceived and the boxes we are “allowed” to fill. We also talk about social media, how to become less reactive and understanding how the algorithms keep us in our bubbles, and so much more. This was a conversation I was really looking forward to and it didn’t disappoint.

She has a gorgeous presence online at Nichole Gabrielle (Instagram, Facebook) and at Melanin and Moxie (Web, Instagram, Facebook ) which is a space specifically for women of color.Nichole is navigating living with a chronic neurological disorder and we talk a lot about how having an “invisible” illness can be so challenging. I know many listeners will resonate with her story of strength and struggle. She talks honestly about how privilege, community, vulnerability, and connection impact her journey.I mention another woman I follow that has informed the way I see my own privilege, Rachel Cargle. Other women I love learning from in the online space are Vilissa Thompson, Leesa Renee Hall, and Layla Saad.Nichole's favorite things include Reina Pomeroy (lots of guests have raved to me about Reina's programs!), movies, baking, The Great British Baking Show, tea, cozy blankets, books (memoirs!) and her husband. She has a great gift guide up right now so check that out! Remember to check out our Taking the Middle Seat Gift Guide too.I am 100% certain Nichole is going to change the world. She speaks truth to power. She shines light where it is needed. Leesa Renee Hall is many things – activist, leader, questioner, writer, filmmaker, teacher … and she’s an old friend of mine. This free-ranging conversation covers a lot of ground, especially in the aftermath of the testimony by Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanagh in the Supreme Court hearings recently. That’s relevant because Leesa has a way for us to deal with the extraordinary emotional fallout after those events. Mainly because she is engaged in a daily practice, and teaching, something she calls ‘Expressive Writing’. She describes it as this: “By writing every morning without editing or censoring myself, a process known as expressive writing, I confronted my internal oppression, let go of the expectations others placed on me, and advocated for the person I was born to be.” According to researchers, write therapy is as beneficial as talk therapy and coaching in changing human behavior. So Leesa has tapped into this by guiding all of us in ways to become more whole through writing prompts. In this conversation, we dug into writing prompts and how they can heal everything from fat shame to unconscious racism to our shared upset over triggering media. Here’s what I learned: Why expressive writing healed Leesa … and me All the many things that can come out of tapping into our unexpressed flow of emotions How to do expressive writing – and when How Highly Sensitive People are especially suited to this practice, and who they are How to know if you’re a Highly Sensitive Introverted Leader, and what to do about it Unconscious biases and how we hold them – and how to heal them with writing prompts How white supremacy depends on a culture of perfectionism – and how that effects all of us The importance of being able to make mistakes with grace I hope you take a moment to listen. It’s a powerful, helpful conversation. Hey Everyday World Changers! Today’s guest, Leesa Renee Hall, is quite literally one of my favorite people. She’s the kind of woman who is unapologetically herself and says what’s on her mind and her heart, even if she knows that some people may get rubbed in the wrong way. As a recovering “nice girl” myself, this is something that I’ve been working on bringing into my life more too, and I’m just so inspired by how Leesa shows up in the world. We dig really deep here, and in this conversation we talk about a unique writing practice that Leesa teaches and says is one of the best things she’s ever done for developing more self-awareness, discovering who she truly is deep down and embodying more of herself in everything she does. She knows a thing or two about writing and vulnerability, because she is the author of 7 (almost 8!) books, and more recently, has turned her attention to writing about the intersection of race, spirituality and leadership. In this discussion she’ll help you dissect your own identity in a really meaningful way, so that you can truly see who it is you’re being in order to become who you’re really meant to be. If this episode resonated with you, it would make my day if you could take a screenshot of you listening on your device. Post it on your Instagram feed or stories, and tag me, @melyssa_griffin, and let me know how helped you. Knowing that people like you are listening to this podcast is honestly what keeps this show going!
