Tragedy doesn't always happen in isolation. Sometimes tragedy hits an entire community, impacting hundreds of households and thousands of lives. That was the case in December 2021 when the Marshall fire hit the town of Superior, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. With so many families displaced, those impacted could find solace in their community. This week on the podcast, I'm talking to one of those survivors.Reina Pomeroy's family had just moved to the area from California 20 weeks prior, thinking they were escaping the risk of wildfires in their new community. And being so new to the area at the time of the fire, and in the midst of Covid, Reina's family had made few connections and friends. In the devastation and grief of the fire and being one of 1,086 families to lose their home, Reina found support and hope in the mobilization and rebuilding of the community. Though the process is far from over, Reina's and other families are dealing with the grief by going through it together and despite the many steps backward, they're finding hope in the progress they're making.About Reina Pomeroy:Reina Pomeroy is a former Social Worker turned Community Builder in her professional life. In December 2021, Reina and her family lost their home in the Marshall Fire. She and other fire survivors banded together to build a network and community to support others who lost everything as they navigate their way home.Mentioned In This Episode:Disaster Psychology Helps to Explain our Response During CrisisWellness WebinarExpert in Hope

“You're pretty for a dark-skinned girl” and “don't play outside in the sun, you'll get too dark” are comments that are sometimes overheard in Communities of Color. They highlight the issue of colorism, which is a form of prejudice and/or discrimination that values lighter skin tones over darker skin tones, specifically within the same racial and/or ethnic group. In this episode you'll hear from three individuals who speak to their respective experiences with colorism within the Black, Asian, and Latinx communities, Lisa Nicholson, a healthcare manager, Reina Pomeroy, MSW, a certified coach at Reina + Co, and Ayda Gonzalez, MS, a recent graduate student from Emory University.

We're chatting about diversity in the creative community, our experiences, what diversity means exactly, and how we can all be more inclusive in the creative community. This episode may be one that sparks conversation and that's what we really hope. We're not here to talk about right or wrong, place blame, lecture or anything along those lines. We're also not here to be the spokespeople for diversity. We're here to discuss a topic that we believe needs to be talked about. Today on the show Jodi interviews Dannie Lynn Fountain, author of four books: The Side Hustle Gal (2016), Big Plan for the Creative Mind (2017), The Bucketlist Babe (2017), and One Honest Woman (2018). Dannie Lynn Fountain is a marketing strategist and whip-smart whiskey drinker currently working at Google. She has 10+ years of experience as an entrepreneur and strategist. Today, she works with creative entrepreneurs and corporations to strategize and implement marketing processes to increase their leads and sales. Her specialty is focusing on passionate storytelling, regardless of industry. Beyond strategy, Dannie is the author of four books and a regular speaker on marketing and entrepreneurship worldwide. She is also the founder of the #sidehustlegal (http://www.sidehustlegal.com/) movement. Her work has been recognized by Forbes, Bustle, Business Insider, Cosmopolitan, Digiday, Girlboss, PR News, and more. Here are some highlights from the conversation: Jodi and Dannie talked about how Dannie came to write her first book in 2016. Dannie said that she could see the writing on the wall that the course/membership market was going to get saturated quickly (and that realistically she didn’t have time to manage something like a membership community), but she knew she needed something to further her business in an outward way. Since that first book in 2016, Dannie has written and published three more books. Dannie started her own publishing imprint, which is its own LLC separate from her business, because she read a scary blog post about publishing on Amazon without owning your ISBN and how it can be difficult or impossible for other retailers to list your book or for publishers later on to work with you. (Note from a book pub professional: This is totally true!) When she bought her first ISBN for her first book, it was cheaper to buy in bulk, so she bought a pack of 10 to use when she’s ready. Four down, six to go! Dannie shared that her favorite part of the writing/publishing process is the writing. She likes that the process of writing helps her to clarify where her mind may have embellished a memory. During the writing of One Honest Woman, for example, Dannie basically had her grandmother fact-checking the book while she was writing it. Dannie’s least favorite part — and she recognizes the irony since she works as marketing strategist — is book marketing. Dannie talked about secretly printing a couple hundred copies of the book and placing them on park benches, bus stops, trains, and the like for people to find and spread the word organically. Dannie’s books serve her business in different ways. She likens her books to a membership community plus a course plus one-on-one work but in book form. Side Hustle Gal and Bucketlist Babe show her audience that a side hustle isn’t “less than” any other hustle. One Honest Woman is Dannie’s speaker circuit book. Big Plan for the Creative Mind, an anthology that she co-authored with Reina Pomeroy, gets a push from October to December each year when entrepreneurs are planning and goal-setting for the next year. Dannie shared how she uses One Honest Woman with the speaking arm of her business, as a book is often required to be considered for speaking gigs. Sometimes a book gets your foot in the door, sometimes the book can be sold at the back of the room, and sometimes the book allows a speaker the opportunity to offer one-on-one sessions at a conference or event. Dannie shared this advice for other author-entrepreneurs: Be sure that you’re passionate enough about your topic to live and breathe it for the long haul. Be sure you love to talk about it. (Dannie is currently working toward her PhD and said that’s the same advice she offers when someone asks if they should pursue a doctorate.) Dannie had a “read 52 books challenge” in 2019 and just finished with American Royals by Katharine McGee. Listen here or on your favorite podcast player, and let me know what you think! New podcast episodes are available every other week. “Christy, how do I get more customers?” The most common question I’m ever asked—more than questions about social media, goal setting or time management—is how to get more customers. I get this question almost every single day. But before we go any further, I need to bust a myth you might be believing that is keeping you from getting more customers. For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard people say: “If you build it, they will come.” How many times have you heard that line? How many times have you believed that simply creating a website meant people would visit? Or opening a store meant people would stop in? Related: Market Research: How to Know What Your Customers Want I hate to tell you this, but it’s just not true. No matter what you build, customers don’t show up out of the blue. Why not? Because . . . They’re busy. They’re distracted. They’re tired. They have hundreds of other messages vying for their attention. We have to stop building these big, awesome, impressive things and wondering why customers aren’t showing up. We have to do something different. Instead of sitting back and waiting for customers to come to you, it’s time for you to go after your customers. You have to figure out where your ideal customers hang out and build relationships with them. And only then, when you’ve added value to their lives, can you invite them to become a customer. So, how do you actually do that? I’ve got four different tips to get you started! Four Ways to Find More Customers 1. Get scrappy. Some of you are sitting around waiting for some sophisticated formula or fool-proof plan to attract more customers. I hate to break it to you, but business doesn’t work that way. Business is a science and an art, which means that while there are certainly best practices to keep in mind, there’s no perfect path to success. Most business owners become successful not because they’re sophisticated, but because they’re really stinkin’ scrappy. They’re willing to get their hands dirty and try a bunch of different things to get the word out. They’re willing to show up at other businesses with donuts, coffee, samples and a business card. They’re not afraid to pick up the phone and do some cold calling. The bottom line is, you have to be willing to do the hard work of building relationships—and that takes a whole lot of scrappiness. 2. Get referrals. When you need your hair colored or your house cleaned, who do you want to hire? Someone you trust, right? And how do you find someone you trust? You ask your friends! Y’all, this is so important! Referrals are just another way of describing word-of-mouth marketing—the most effective form of marketing. The best part is, it’s free! So, if you’re not actively incentivizing your current clients to refer their friends and asking them for testimonials, you’re missing out on an amazing opportunity to find new customers. 3. Improve your marketing. I want you to take a good look at your marketing efforts as a whole. Look at the different ways you’re marketing your business—from your website to your social media posts and the emails you send. Then I want you to ask yourself: Is the design clean and beautiful? Is the copy clear? Is your call to action direct and obvious? Try to pinpoint what’s working and what’s not. Get to the root of the problem before you look for a solution. For example, if you’re not getting any sales from your online store, is it because no one is visiting the website or because people are visiting but not buying? Knowing exactly why you’re not getting sales will help you know what you need to change and improve. Related: Branding the Look and Tone of Your Business 4. Try something new. If you keep doing the same things you’ve always done, you’ll just keep getting the same results. So, if you want to grow your business by increasing your customer base, you have to be willing to experiment to find out what works best for your target market. Try something new on social media, on your website, on your Esty store, or even in person as you pitch your product or service to someone. Try a new promotion and see what kind of buzz you get. Or maybe you need to show up at a different place and meet a different group of people. When you try new approaches, you are much more likely to find fresh, innovative ways to attract more of your ideal customers. Related: Keep Things Fresh by Trying Something New Finding more customers is not as hard as it sounds. In fact, there are so many different ways to do it. Let’s recap the four you should start with. Get scrappy: Don’t worry about a sophisticated formula—just show up and meet new people. Get referrals: Encourage your current tribe to market for you. Improve your marketing: See where you can make tweaks and adjustments to your marketing strategy. And finally: keep experimenting, trying new things, and doing more of what works. You got this! Attracting New Customers to Your Business with Reina Pomeroy Reina Pomeroy is an expert at sales and attracting more customers. She’s the founder of Reina + Co., host of the Fueled with Heart podcast and the creator of the Dreamy Client Magnet program. I love how she encourages business owners to be heart-centered, where their passion for the work and the customer always gets first priority. On this episode, Reina and I talk about: How to make more sales by serving your customers well How to work on your money mind-set Why you don’t need more followers to get more customers How to network and build relationships the right way The One Quality That Will Transform Every Relationship I was on a panel a few years ago at a Ramsey Smart Conference alongside #1 bestselling author Les Parrott. Les is a brilliant clinical psychologist and relationship expert. We were a part of a Q&A session, and someone in the audience asked Les for his best piece of marriage advice—no small question. His answer completely changed my life. Turns out, his best piece of marriage advice was simply to have empathy. That’s it: empathy. Put yourself in your spouse’s shoes as often as possible. This advice has been transformative for me. I have used this nugget of wisdom so many times since that night. It has helped my husband and I dissolve conflict, increase understanding, and improve our connection. It seems so obvious, but I wonder why we don’t do this more often in life with all of our relationships. We tend to judge ourselves by our intentions (they’re always good, of course!), but we judge others by their actions. Seeing the world from only our perspective leads to conflict, misunderstanding and broken relationships. If we’re going to have healthy relationships, we have to be willing to see the situation from the other person’s point of view. And you can do that by empathizing. By putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and giving them the benefit of the doubt. Whether it’s your spouse, best friend, coworker or customer, empathizing will transform every relationship and every interaction you have.

#114 — From Unexplained Infertility to Planning a Small Business Maternity Leave How can or should entrepreneurship change in order to meet our changing life needs? What does it look like to be a business owner as a person without children versus one with kids? And what does it feel like to go through unexplained secondary infertility? Today we get to hear from Reina Pomeroy, coach, business owner and mother of two, across a breadth of experiences. She shares everything from her experience starting multiple businesses, to her multi-year infertility journey, to how sometimes our professional paths only make sense in hindsight. Through it all, Reina’s openness, vulnerability, and deep passion for her work shine through. Reina Pomeroy is a focus coach for creative entrepreneurs and the founder of Reina & Co. What began as a side hustle is now a business with six team members that can offer her fully paid maternity leave. That being said, her journey, like so many of ours, felt scattered and non-linear as she lived it but now it makes sense in helping her learn important skills. Her signature program, called The Dreamy Client Magnet, helps creative entrepreneurs get laser-focused on who they want to serve and who they want to work with and what their boundaries are so that they can book more dreamy clients with ease, get paid to do what they love, and have the freedom and flexibility to enjoy it all. The program covers how to stop doing things just because you’re good at them, and instead how to focus on what you love doing and creating space for freedom and flexibility. If you want to know where you can focus your business, that’s what today’s chat is all about. We then get to dig into Reina’s very thoughtful and simple Social Glue Strategy, which is all about how to connect with more people one-on-one and how to use connecting authentically with other people as a strategic tool in your business. This is especially useful if you’re an online or a digital entrepreneur and you may be don’t run into a lot of people, because your office happens to be your bedroom, or your closet, or a co-working space. Along the way, Reina also tells us about her own journey. She shares what it was like to be an entrepreneur without kids (hint: you have a lot more time to “hustle” and are a lot less tired), to switching professions after having her first baby after realizing just how precious her time and energy are. And while she is now planning out her fully paid maternity leave, there was a multi-year period in her life where she and her husband dealt with unexplained secondary infertility, or infertility that occurs after having already had a successful pregnancy. Along the way her son tried to ask Alexa for a baby, she and her husband prepared for IVF, and then ultimately conceived just hours before their first in vitro appointment. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT How Reina helps creative entrepreneurs get laser-focused on who they want to serve and who they want to work with and what their boundaries are so that they can book more dreamy clients with ease, get paid to do what they love, and have the freedom and flexibility to enjoy it all. Her non-linear path to entrepreneurship that might not “make sense on LinkedIn” but helped her gain the skills she needed to run her current, very successful coaching business. How Reina’s natural inclination to check in with and connect with people has become her most valuable trait and a skill she t --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/startuppregnant/message

Reina Pomeroy is a speaker, coach, podcaster, founder of Reina + Co and creator of the Dreamy Client Magnet Program. In this convo we cover all kinds of life + biz goodness - from why she left her career in social work to support creative entrepreneurs, to how she intentionally created new hobbies when she realized that, well, she had none. (I can totally relate. ha) We talk about how working fewer hours has been exactly what she needs in this season of life, how she's read over 130 (!) books in 2018, and a fun sneak peek at a big (totally not biz-related) goal she has for 2019. On Episode 26 I'm talking to Nichole Beiner, an attorney, diversity consultant and community builder. She has a gorgeous presence online at Nichole Gabrielle (Instagram, Facebook) and at Melanin and Moxie (Web, Instagram, Facebook ) which is a space specifically for women of color.Nichole is navigating living with a chronic neurological disorder and we talk a lot about how having an “invisible” illness can be so challenging. I know many listeners will resonate with her story of strength and struggle. She talks honestly about how privilege, community, vulnerability, and connection impact her journey.I mention another woman I follow that has informed the way I see my own privilege, Rachel Cargle. Other women I love learning from in the online space are Vilissa Thompson, Leesa Renee Hall, and Layla Saad.Nichole's favorite things include Reina Pomeroy (lots of guests have raved to me about Reina's programs!), movies, baking, The Great British Baking Show, tea, cozy blankets, books (memoirs!) and her husband. She has a great gift guide up right now so check that out! Remember to check out our Taking the Middle Seat Gift Guide too.I am 100% certain Nichole is going to change the world. She speaks truth to power. She shines light where it is needed. She is incredible and I want you all to follow her right this minute.I'll be back soon with another episode but until then, take the middle seat! I promise you'll find some holiday magic there.

Business owners often work too hard on selling people their service. Reina's social glue method is about actually connecting with people and not forcing yourself down their throats, so that the sale just happens naturally and feels good for everyone. This takes away the dread of marketing and allows you to simply delight in being of service to people. Time Stamped Show Notes 1:38 – Introduction. 5:23 – Reina feels that people work too hard on selling people their service but her social glue method is a long term marketing strategy which is about connecting with people and becoming a resource for people and not forcing yourself down somebody’s throat also it is taking the dread of marketing that she used to feel and turning it into a way of delighting people and being of service to them. 6:36 – Social glue method is a long term marketing method for people who are shy and can’t get a grasp on how to get people to see what they are working on and one of the ways to do that is to shift your mindset about what marketing might look like and it’s about how to connect one on one with people, work smarter not harder and go into depth with people. Reina says that you must connect face to face with people via Skype or a phone call and get to know people as humans. 7:19 – The result of going into a mindset of collaborative networking is that if you connect with one person they are going to connect you with somebody else. 8:59 – The people connections are the baseline of what we should be doing and this isn’t the only thing Reina does in her business for marketing but it’s the home that Reina found for herself because we do feel lonely in our own little offices and the outcomes of social groups isn’t necessarily to find more clients, it might be to find your tribe or to find other people who will buy services later down the road. 9:47 – According to Reina the mindset while going into these connections shouldn’t be to think how can I get a sale out of this person and when you become heart centered and people centered and keep your selfish needs aside you will have returns on your investment. 11:32 – Reina encourages people to get on the phone with people and says that once you get over the fear of doing phone calls it actually gets easier but if that doesn’t work for you or you never do it then find the modality that works for you. 12:07 – Reina says that people often ask her how to ask a person who is not even a friend on a coffee date and she advises them that they should think this person is just a person and I really just want to reach out to them and get to know them as a human being and how can I do that. 12:36 – When she first introduced herself to leaders in her industry she was very apprehensive because she thought they are probably too busy and they don’t want to connect with me but she emailed them and they chatted over Skype and they were amazing humans and so Reina advises that you should stop thinking of yourself as inferior than them. 13:16 – You should have some kind of an idea of where this conversation could go and you should be prepared with some questions to ask people. 14:10 – Reina finds that women are really bad at asking for support and so she always makes sure that they answer her when she asks for support because it is very important for women to learn how to articulate how others can support them. 15:42 – Reina says that you should just pour into other people before you ask for anything and the abundance mindset comes from being able to give other people your energy, your time and your craft and it’s not because she wants you to burnout but because when you pour into other people you actually get great energy back. 17:31 – A lot of how Reina built her list is through collaboration and it can be a really great list growth opportunity and Reina’s list building is not all automated and the part of it that is more heart centered that people forget about sometimes to talk about is collaboration and one of the ways she has done this is to do JB webinars with people who have a list and she has the content so she is able to share her stuff with their list and that way she is drawing a new crowd to them and they are drawing a new crowd to her and none of the JB webinars that Reina has done for list growth has been for selling anything. 20:35 – A couple of the things that Reina launched recently she hasn’t actually launched because she has had conversations with people and they are like oh I am buying that and then all the seats are gone. So she doesn’t have to spend the time or the money or the energy putting up a sales pitch because people are already buying it from her without her actually going out and promoting it with a big launch. 21:24 – Reina tells us to make sure that your mindset is on the long game and you are pouring into people. 22:24 – There are so many best practices in the online marketing world and so much of what Reina has learnt as an entrepreneur is that there is no actual right way of doing things and we just have to make it up as we go and figure out what works for us.
