Whether we like numbers or not, all business owners have to work with them on some level! On today's episode of the podcast, I'm talking with Madison Brown, an accounting expert and time management superstar, as she walks us through her favorite ways to take the overwhelm out of dealing with your numbers. Shownotes for Episode 147
Madison Brown, founder and CEO of https://madisondearly.com/ (Madison Dearly Bookkeeping), realizes and understands hiring a bookkeeper may not be as sexy as hiring a social media manager or copywriter. But knowing your numbers may be one of the most important things to know to have the ability to level-up your business. In this episode, I sit down with Madison to discuss, “Should a bookkeeper be your first hire?” Spoiler: Yes, yes it should! Hiring a bookkeeper allows you to know your numbers and level-up your business. When you're ready to hire a bookkeeper, you're not just a freelancer anymore. You're the CEO of your business. If you don't know how much money you have to hire employees, a business coach or join a mastermind, how are you going to confidently be able to do these things that are pivotal to the growth of your business? You have to know if you can afford those things because you don't want to run your business on debt. It gives you so much more clarity and freedom as a business owner. No matter when you're listening, you can, and should, head to www.katieferro.com/6-secrets to register and be granted the replays in a free Kajabi course. Day 2 was a panel interview of members of my programs who have quit their full time jobs, supported by their bookkeeping businesses. The purpose here is to hear their similarities, but also their differences. Quitting will be unique to everyone and that should be relieving - as it means there's a way for you too. I asked questions and also did polls to get a pulse on the background of our members. We could've chatted all day, but instead we ran just shy of 2 hours! You will WANT to listen to this in full, even if you have to take breaks and come back. You get to hear from 7 different perspectives as we uncover: Each person's quitting story Their biggest motivator in their desire to start their business Their biggest fear as they embarked on that journey Their biggest lessons learned Where their first clients came from, and where they mostly come from now How they found their niche (or if they have one) How to manage a job while growing a business, including the issue of non-competes How to manage parenthood, while working and growing a business If they replaced their corporate salary before quitting If their decision to quit was based on income or feelings What they would have done differently To follow the quitters on Instagram, click below: Madison Brown / https://www.instagram.com/madisondearly/ Megan Evans / https://www.instagram.com/borntoroambookkeeping/ Rachel Burke / https://www.instagram.com/bookkeepingbyburke/ Matt Croce / https://www.instagram.com/mrcroce/ Jen Fischer / https://www.instagram.com/numbersbyjen/ Alicea Cosmo / https://www.instagram.com/aliceacosmocpa/ Sheila Watts / https://www.instagram.com/sheilawattscpa/ I'm excited to hear your takeaways so be sure to screenshot this episode and tag me in your stories! I have a TREAT for you today! I haven't had an interview on the show in a little while, and I'm back with not 1 but SEVEN incredible guests for you to hear from! Our guests today are Callie Ammons, Kelsea Buddo, Ellen Wagner, Amber Housley, Emily Conley, Jess Jordana, and Madison Brown. These women are sharing the ways they have help with their kids, business and household while running successful businesses! As a new mom starting back to working from my maternity leave, I realized working with kids whether you own a business or work for someone else, is an entirely different ball game from what I was used to! I needed all the tips, and I didn't know where to go to get them because I don't think enough people are talking about the realities of working full time as a business owner and a mama. So, as I watch other business owning mamas, I've consistently wondered “How do they do it all? Do they work a limited schedule? Is their baby in daycare or with a nanny? Are they working all day and then cooking dinner every night or is there a hack for that? How do they do it?!” I know many of you wonder the same. Balancing motherhood, your household, and your business is a lot of work. The women you're about to hear from are all moms, all business owners, and all in different stages of motherhood from new moms like me to moms of older kiddos. They are all bringing you their top tip for getting help in motherhood, their business, and their household! Some highlighted topics you'll hear about: - Advice from families where both parents are working full time or where their spouse owns a business too. - Thoughts on nannies, daycare, schools, and other ways people find outside help with their kiddos. - The experience of having your child at home “full time” while you also work full time. - What it's like to run your business AND work another job full time - Tips on outsourcing household tasks and growing your team within your business - Ways to organize your calendar as a family - What finding help looks like in the early days when you don't have family nearby - The different seasons of motherhood as a working mama - And so so much more! Today you are in for a TREAT. My bookkeeper is here to answer all of your business bookkeeping questions. And yep, your actual questions! I asked you guys on Instagram what bookkeeping questions you wanted us to tackle and those are the exact questions we are answering here. We chat about questions like… - How to find a bookkeeper who is right for your business? - How is bookkeeping different from accounting? - When is it time to hire a bookkeeper versus DIYing your bookkeeping? - How is legitimate bookkeeping different from keeping a really detailed spreadsheet? - What reports in QuickBooks are the most important to pay attention to? - What's the best way to organize receipts and invoices? - How do I get started with bookkeeping if I’ve done none up until this point in my business? As you can see, so much great content, and that’s just a small portion of what our conversation is about. And fun thing, as I’m recording this intro, I actually got to hang out with Madison in real life a few weekends ago! She lives in Houston, but was in Nashville for the weekend. Dads hold a tender place in our hearts. Like our heavenly Father, they have a unique way of showing they see us, we matter, and we are loved. And as we become parents, we want to shower our children with the same kind of love and provision a good father graciously gives. Our guests are Christian singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman and his daughter Emily Chapman Richards, and Sawyer Brown frontman and Christian music producer Mark Miller and his daughter, TV host Madison Brown. These dads and daughters talk about special moments they had with their own fathers, along with the faithful legacies they’re working to pass on to their children today. Dad has always, and continues to remain to this day, always very intentional with every moment he has.” - Emily Chapman Richards “There's nothing sweeter to the heart of a dad than to hear his children bless him.” - Steven Curtis Chapman “That’s what’s so beautiful about Jesus Calling, I think. It's just the approach of speaking in a language where you feel like Jesus is speaking these things to you and right into your situation.” - Steven Curtis Chapman “There were several other things throughout my career that were crossroads that really challenged my faith. I always went in the direction of my faith, and it always was the right thing to do.” - Mark Miller “I want [my kids] to grow up the way that I did, to know that if you're willing to work, you can achieve anything you want to. Anytime someone is making an effort to connect the general public with farmers, ranchers, processors and growers, it’s important to me that we lift them up and highlight them on Keeping Ag Real. The foundation from where the show “Chasing Down Madison Brown,” began is one based on years of traveling and seeing the pockets of the U.S. Today’s guest is the one and only Madison Brown. If you are in agriculture, she will inspire you to tell your story. Anyone with a curiosity about their food will be motivated to learn more. I’m excited to get the word out about the show.

Madison Brown is a seventeen-year-old high school senior who speaks up for herself and countless others through her work in a number of advocacy groups. I taught her back when she was a ninth-grader, but it’s fair to say that, all along, she’s been teaching me. Her older sister Paige, a college student, adds her own insights in this conversation about carving out space for oft-unheard voices.http://samschindler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/WWWA_013_092216.mp3DOWNLOAD this episode SUBSCRIBE to this podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Ark. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, East Tennessee all-girl stringboard “The Poor Valley Girls” perform live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, Interviews with The Poor Valley Girls, Aubrey Atwater & Elwood Donnelly present “Women Warrior Ballads,” and Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Jay Round. The “Poor Valley Girls” hail from the hallowed musical grounds of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. “Poor Valley” refers to the geographical region that both Heather Pace and Madison Brown call home in Virginia. This region of the United States also includes Bristol, TN, which is known for the “sonic-boom” of country music recordings, on the Victor Record label in the early 1920’s (Jimmy Rogers and The Carter Family, among others.) For their performance at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, Heather and Madison are joined by friend and musician, Colleen Trenwith. This recording is a wonderful example of how the traditional sounds of their region have moved seamlessly to the next generation of musicians. Prolific folk musicians Aubrey Atwater & Elwood Donnelly profile influential folk music icons Jean Ritchie and the Ritchie Family, as well as explore the traditional Appalachian music and dance that the Ritchie Family helped to perpetuate into the modern American folk lexicon. This episode offers a presentation of “Women Warrior Ballads.” Mark Jones' “From the Vault” segment offers an archival recording of Ozark original Jay Round performing the traditional song “Soldiers’ Joy,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.
