Think menopause is nothing but bad news? Think again! In this episode, we talk with Rachel Lankester, host of the Magnificent Midlife podcast, about taking another look at menopause and considering how it could actually be a powerful, positive experience.    Rachel shares her menopause journey which started with an early diagnosis at the age of 41, how it led her to start a podcast and write a book on the subject, as well as starting an information hub called MenoClarity where women can get unbiased information about menopause.  In this conversation we dive into the importance of changing the negative narrative around aging, and the role of menopause in the lifetime of a woman.    Rachel Lankester is a champion for women, and believes that changing our mindset can make all the difference when it comes to our experience of the menopause journey.    Whether you're going through menopause or know someone who is, this chat is full of encouragement and fresh perspectives.

Rachel Lankester is an ageism disrupter, midlife mentor and founder of Magnificent Midlife, an online hub inspiring and supporting women 40+. She's the author of Magnificent Midlife: Transform Your Middle Years, Menopause and Beyond, which was recommended as one of seven top books about menopause in The New York Times. She's also the host of the Magnificent Midlife Podcast and founder of MenoClarity, an online information hub about menopause, which she started because she felt there was too much scaremongering, hype and fear in current menopause narratives, especially in the UK.  From Rachel: "When I was 41, I was given a diagnosis of early menopause. I was hoping for a second child at the time, so it was pretty devastating. It meant the end of my fertility and dreams of that baby. It also catapulted me into a period of intense self-doubt, sadness and feeling very lost. I had no idea why this had happened to me, nor how to take care of myself.  I also allowed the diagnosis to completely change my perception of who I was as a woman.  I saw myself as a dried-up old prune! Over time I discovered that diet, lifestyle and mindset can massively impact perimenopausal hormonal change and for a short time my menstrual cycle and premenopausal hormone levels came back.  I also eventually realized I am no less of a woman because I am older, even though society likes to tell me that on a daily basis. Looking around, I couldn't find resources to help me, so I created them. I didn't want women to arrive in perimenopause as unprepared, disconcerted and sad as me.  I didn't want any perimenopausal woman to feel this was the beginning of the end, as I did. I want women to see the magnificence in midlife and menopause, and to feel empowered to embrace what may be the best stage of their lives yet.  I now spend my time challenging negative sexist, ageist stereotypes and narratives wherever and whenever I can. I help women get the messy midlife stuff sorted, so you can create and sustain a next chapter that will excite and delight you long term.  I'm passionate about helping women navigate the often messy middle of life. So you can thrive not just survive. And become the woman you were always meant to be.  I believe the older and more experienced we get, the more we have to offer the world and especially those women coming up behind us.  We get better with age not worse.  I don't believe in denying we're getting older or hiding it either. I'm not ashamed to be a midlife woman. I'm proud of it. I think I've earned those midlife stripes just as much as I've earned the laughter lines around my eyes. They don't diminish me in any way." Rachel is passionate about enabling women to create and live a positive new narrative when it comes to midlife, menopause, and ageing. She's also determined to challenge the status quo and bash negative stereotypes associated with women 40+. Rachel's motto is to be "prepared, not scared," as she challenges the negativity bias in the west surrounding aging. She reminds us that "menopause is temporary; it's a tunnel, not a cave." Rachel advises listeners to stay curious and to listen to our bodies, especially during menopause, a sensitive time in our lives when we may reconsider what may no longer be serving our health and wellbeing. I recently went to see the Barbie movie and loved it. There were so many great messages in there and the dealt with what are extremely complex cultural messages and phenomena in a way that was digestible for even the youngest members of the audience. So today I wanted to reflect on those messages and points and unpack the patriarchy a little bit and how it impacts all of us and share some stories of my own about how I have seen how patriarchy gets in the way of women mentoring and supporting each other. Of loving and complimenting each other, of being able to brag and cheer for each other. This is where the bucket of frogs story comes in.Sisterhood wounding is a real thing and many women suffer from it. Let's face it, most of us have many wounds from our teenage years when it comes to the sisterhood. Patriarchy pits women against each other, we learn to not only hate each other but we hate ourselves. We hate the feminine aspects of ourself and this is what disconnects us from our bodies. In the long run, that wound causes signifiant damage. In stops us from speaking our truth, we lose our voice. It stops us from having deep, honest, vulnerable relationships with each other. We disconnect from ourselves and from each other.I offer some tips and guidance about where to start when it comes to sisterhood wounding and healing the collective trauma that lives within all of us.If you want to join my Magnificent Midlife course click on the link and sign up.

Menopause, commonly referred to as "the change," is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but can occur earlier or later in some women.During this time, women experience a variety of physical and emotional changes due to fluctuating hormone levels. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and difficulty sleeping. While menopause can be a challenging time for some women, it is important to remember that it is a normal part of life. There are many ways to manage symptoms and maintain overall health, including regular exercise, a healthy diet, and hormone replacement therapy if needed. It is also important to seek support from loved ones and healthcare providers. By staying informed and taking care of themselves, women can navigate this transition with grace and confidence.Rachel Lankester is the founder of Magnificent Midlife, an online hub celebrating and empowering women 40+. Life - An Inside Job

This episode focussed on debunking the narrative that claims menopause is a deficiency that requires fixing with oestrogen, instead of a normal, healthy life event that ushers us into a vibrant, engaged maturity.  I feel that if menopause is asking us to love ourselves better, to deepen our relationship to ourselves, then HRT can really help with that, allowing us to put ourselves first. But though HRT can be a lifesaver, when it's used for a long time to continue to push through when our resources are already depleted, without making any lifestyle changes, it is just saving up problems for later. Rachel Lankester, midlife disruptor, author of Magnificent Midlife,  founder of The Mutton Club and host of Magnificent Midlife podcast explores:The faulty menopause research that's endlessly repeatedWhat symptoms HRT is helpful forThe latest research into HRT and dementiaMenopause and mental healthWhy language mattersRachel's new project MenoClarity that's offers free-to-access clear information and evidence-based research Rachel's website is https://magnificentmidlife.com/ and you can find her book Magnificent Midlife: Transform Your Middle Years, Menopause and Beyond at all good bookshops. From the very first moment of this podcast Rachel Lankester and I are talking about a controversial topic – the conversation around menopause that is currently taking place in the UK. With the push to get more and more women in the UK taking HRT and which has resulted in a shortage of HRT that has left many women feeling abandoned. Rachel jumps on her ‘soapbox' to share her view on what is happening and her sadness that the dominant conversation around menopause is one of struggle and horror. Rachel was diagnosed with early menopause when she was trying to fall pregnant, as you can imagine this was a complete shock to her especially when she didn't really think there was much wrong with her hormones. After following some great advice around her diet and lifestyle Rachel was able to reverse the ‘early menopause' diagnosis but sadly didn't go on to fulfil her dream for another child. This experience sent this avid researcher on a mission to learn more about menopause and the midlife experience that many women go through. Rachel has her own very successful podcast called Magnificent Midlife and she has some wonderful guests. Her podcast shares the stories of everyday women doing extraordinary things and it is her mission to share with as many women as possible that midlife is not a time to hide and suffer it is your time to shine because the world needs you now more than ever. Her positive attitude to midlife is wonderful and her attitude to this next chapter in life is inspiring.
