A cutting-edge neurologist and passionate horseman, Dr. Stephen Peters has been a guiding figure in the understanding of how horses process information. In his collaborative efforts with renowned horsemen Martin Black and Mark Rashad, he has provided a strong scientific process to horsemanship and has revolutionized the modern understanding of horse neurology. However, Peters is also passionate about the etherealness of horses and how they can communicate with humans. In this episode, Dr. Peters explains how since being on the Journey On Podcast in the first year (Dec. 2020) he has expanded his views about the way the world works, while still remaining rooted in science-based theories. He combines these new views in an upcoming book called Neuropoetry, where he combines science with art in a felt sense. He also has an updated version of the classic Evidence-Based Horsemanship coming out later this year called The Science and Practice of Evidence-Based Horsemanship, which provides a rich catalogue of scientific documentation to the horsemanship. Description: In this episode of Ride On, I'll focus on how you know if your horse needs a new bit, how we evaluate a horse for the right bit, and understanding the impact of a well-chosen bit. And in “What the Hay? Q&A” at the end of this episode, we have questions from listeners about ground manners for senior horses, tips for riding the trot for riders with tight hips, and what saddle pads work best on high withered horses. In episode 74, we sit down with Dr. Stephen Peters who reflects on his role as a leader as he shares what he did to honor and be faithful to the work in order to make the greatest impact possible.
0:00Understanding the Impact of Technology and Lifestyle on Mental HealthStephen Peters shared a case study of a client who successfully moved from high medication for ADHD to being medication-free after two years, focusing on emotional regulation and strength conditioning. He pointed out the detrimental effects of excessive screen time on concentration and mental health, especially among teenagers, who are conditioned to process information quickly. Peters stressed the importance of moderation in lifestyle choices, including technology use, diet, and social activities.10:37Understanding Movement Patterns in ChildrenThe conversation focuses on how to recognize and assist children who may struggle with movement. Stephen Peters explains that certain reflexes, such as the ATNR and Babinski reflex, play a significant role in a child's physical development. He notes that poor movement patterns can lead to emotional instability and increased injury risk, but with proper support and integration of these reflexes, children's movement abilities can improve.15:15Understanding Primitive Reflexes in Youth SportsStephen Peters explains how primitive reflexes can hinder young athletes' performance and lead to injuries if not addressed. He advocates for incorporating specific movement patterns into training regimens to help mitigate these issues. Michael Wright questions how receptive medical professionals are to this approach, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between different specialists in supporting athletes.31:45Understanding Skill Acquisition and Neurological Responses in SportsMichael Wright and Stephen Peters explore the balance between block practice and live play in developing sports skills. Peters explains that block training is essential for building neurological patterns, while live play helps athletes apply those skills in high-pressure situations. He warns that without sufficient practice, athletes may struggle with decision-making when faced with stress.43:04Understanding the Impact of Stress and Breathing on Emotional HealthStephen Peters discussed how physical reflexes and breathing are foundational to emotional health, pointing out that many people in the Western world do not breathe effectively. He explained that stress can elevate breathing rates, which is a natural response to perceived threats. Michael Wright expressed interest in the emotional aspects of the conversation, prompting Peters to elaborate on the brain's role in regulating bodily systems.45:14Understanding Passion and Support in Autism CareStephen Peters expressed his commitment to helping autistic children through his work at Brain X Movement, describing how he feels empowered by witnessing their progress. He articulated the significance of neuroplasticity and the environment in fostering personal growth. Michael Wright contributed by sharing his own experiences in inclusive sports, illustrating the profound emotional impact of enabling children to achieve milestones.1:00:18Understanding the Fight or Flight Response in Learning and DevelopmentStephen Peters explains how the fight or flight response can hinder decision-making in stressful situations, particularly in sports. He advocates for starting with unopposed practice to help players recognize patterns before introducing opposition. Peters acknowledges the expertise of his colleague Bernie in football but stresses the necessity of a neurological approach to learning. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
01:00Personal Reflections and Sporting MemoriesMichael Wright and Stephen Peters discuss their childhood experiences with sports, highlighting the importance of unstructured play. Stephen reminisces about playing Wembley doubles and cricket with his brothers, which fostered their love for sports. He cites Gary Lineker as his sporting idol and recalls the memorable moment of watching England win the Rugby World Cup, sharing the experience with his family.7:26Sportsmanship and Values in RugbyStephen Peters discusses the values embodied by the All Blacks, noting their dedication to sportsmanship, ethics, and leaving the environment better than they found it. He contrasts the brutal nature of rugby with the humility displayed by teams like Japan, who also prioritize cleanliness and respect. Michael Wright agrees, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good standards both during and after the game.10:18Stephen Peters' Football Journey and Coaching ExperienceStephen Peters recounted his football journey, beginning at Southampton's academy and transitioning through various clubs, including Torquay and Tiverton, where he played alongside notable players. After enduring six knee operations, he shifted to coaching, spending significant time at Bristol Rovers and developing his own coaching business, which included holiday camps and elite training sessions. He later worked with Southampton's academy in London before returning to coaching youth football at Forest Green.17:32Exploring Functional Neurology and Primitive ReflexesStephen Peters recounted his introduction to developmental neurology through Seb Cain, whose daughter with Down syndrome surpassed medical predictions. Peters emphasized the importance of understanding primitive reflexes in helping children with various developmental challenges. 24:11Understanding Primitive Reflexes in Child DevelopmentStephen Peters emphasized the role of primitive reflexes in early childhood development, noting that they are crucial for survival and must integrate as children grow. He highlighted that these reflexes should typically disappear by age three, with most vanishing by age one. If they remain active, they can hinder neurological development and lead to issues such as speech delays.28:15Understanding Primitive Reflexes and Their Impact on Child DevelopmentStephen Peters explains that primitive reflexes are crucial for neurological development and can create barriers to higher functions if they remain active. He notes that the current environment, characterized by excessive screen time and reduced physical activity, is preventing children from moving enough to deactivate these reflexes. This lack of movement can lead to various developmental issues, including emotional regulation problems and speech delays.35:24Understanding Optimal Brain Development and DyslexiaMichael Wright raised questions about the sequence of reflexes in child development and whether it matters if milestones are missed. Stephen Peters confirmed that there is an optimal developmental route, highlighting that missing the crawling phase can lead to challenges such as dyslexia. He emphasized the significance of movement patterns in brain development and the potential for improvement at any age.38:06Reflex Assessment and Movement Integration in ChildrenStephen Peters highlighted the significance of assessing retained reflexes, such as the palmar reflex, in children and how these reflexes can lead to involuntary movements that hinder fine motor skills. He described a case involving an 11-year-old girl whose active palmar reflex caused her hand to close involuntarily while holding objects. Peters emphasized the need for targeted movement exercises to help integrate these reflexes, ultimately improving skills like handwriting and emotional regulation. Hosted on Acast. "Wild Things" (1998) is the pick from Patreon supporter Helen this week. It's definitely a memorable one for both hosts, though maybe not for the intricate twists and turns of the storyline. "Wild Things" was a sultry neo-noir thriller directed by John McNaughton, renowned for his work on "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." The production of "Wild Things" was characterized by its bold and risqué narrative, which required a delicate balance of provocative content and intriguing storytelling. The screenplay, penned by Stephen Peters, was initially seen as a challenging project due to its complex plot filled with twists, turns, and mature themes. Casting was crucial to the film's success, with the production team bringing together an ensemble that included Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, and Denise Richards. The chemistry and performances of the cast were pivotal in navigating the film's intricate web of deceit and double-crosses. Filming took place primarily in the sultry, atmospheric locales of South Florida, utilizing the lush, humid environment to enhance the film's steamy and mysterious tone. The production team faced the challenge of maintaining the film's edgy and controversial elements while ensuring it appealed to mainstream audiences. This involved careful direction and cinematography to balance the film's erotic scenes with its overarching suspenseful and thrilling narrative. Despite initial mixed reviews, "Wild Things" gained a cult following over the years, praised for its audacious plot and the memorable performances of its cast. The film's legacy continues as a standout example of late-90s thrillers that dared to push the envelope. It's not often that you get to chat with a neuroscientist. Still less often to chat with a neuroscientist that is also a doctor. Still less often to chat with a neuroscientist that is a doctor and also autistic. And less often still to chat with a neuroscientist who is also a doctor and also autistic and also a horseman. Finally, it's about a chance in a million, maybe more, to chat with a neuroscientist that is a doctor, is autistic, is a horseman and who is also a renowned horse trainer and published author on horse training and behaviour. Dr Stephen Peters is that man. His book, Evidence Based Horsemanship, is rapidly becoming something of a bible among those who would understand how their horse's brain and their human brain could best come together in working harmony. Of course, for those of us in the Equine Assisted World, whether we are practitioners, clients, or simply curious onlookers – or whether we are the horses upon whom the entire process depends – knowledge of the brain is key. If we are dealing with a physical issue, we first have to reach the person's brain before we can start that therapizing stuff. If we are working with neuro cognitive conditions, a basic working knowledge of the neuroscience of learning and cognition would seem essential – yet very few programs outside of Horse Boy Method offer this. If you are training and maintaining the therapy horse, understanding your own brain as well as, to some extent, that of your four-legged colleague would also seem to be an advantage. One day, the therapeutic approaches will hopefully begin to put neuroscience front and centre of their professional trainings. Axons, dendrites, myelination, BDNF and other neurotrophins, cerebral spinal fluid, the amygdala, cortisol, oxytocin and serotonin, the dance between the re frontal cortex and the rough emotional seas of the limbic system: it's a lot to navigate. So sit back, grab a pen, paper and beverage, and let Dr Stephen initiate you into the mysteries of that organ you work with every day; the noggin. Teigan Collister was their top scorer with 7 goals. Mackenzie Hawkesby bagged 6 goals from midfield and was brilliant, she carried her Sydney FC form into the NPL NSW season.Northern Tigers (2nd, 23 pts): Jet-heeled forward Lauren Allan scored 7 goals in 12 games, exactly the same record as in 2020. Winonah Heatley really caught the eye in central defence and earned a move to Sweden. Aideen Keane also earned a Nordic move after some strong displays on the wing and is now in Iceland. We like College Matildas content, so we have to mention Greta Kraszula (defender), Brianna Edwards (goalkeeper) and Siobhan Edwards (forward), who are now in the USA.Macarthur Rams (3rd, 23 pts): There's been a revival at Lynwood Park after the appointment of Stephen Peters as head coach in the offseason. Leena Khamis led the way with ... 7 goals (we sense a theme developing). At B90, we love Canberra United, so it was great to see Lauren Keir, Hayley-Taylor Young and Rachael Goldstein receive plenty of game time.APIA Leichhardt (4th, 22 pts): Head coach Spencer Prior threw a formation change at them during the season (from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3), and they handled it well. The multi-talented Georgia Yeoman-Dale lined up on the right side of a back three and was excellent as always. 16 year old Claudia Cicco played in every game as a right back / right wing-back, definitely a player with a lot of potential and she even has her own chant! Sophie Hoban was another player who took her opportunities, going from the Reserves to starting for the 1st Grade side as a centre forward. Of course, we can't talk about APIA without mentioning one of Steffen's favourite players, Grace Maher (#AmazingGrace) - she showed her usual technique and game smarts, and grabbed a few goals as well.Sydney University (5th, 20 pts): In the spirit of sucking up to parents, Emma Ilijoski did well as Uni's left-back … hi Kathryn :). First-time head coach (and Leeds United fan) Em Husband did a good job keeping them competitive despite the loss of a number of key players. Kaitlyn Torpey was their top scorer with … 7 goals (lol).Illawarra Stingrays (6th, 20 pts): The team sometimes known as “pink WSW” were in the mix, as is usually the case. Michelle Carney was the league's top scorer with nine goals, or as I said during one of my calls, “Michelle Carney does Michelle Carney things”. Our Molly Appleton loves Talitha Kramer, and it was great to see her back in pink, scoring 5 times and generally causing havoc as a left-winger. We love a link back to the NPL Capital Football competition, so shoutout to former Belconnen United star Bronte Pyke for some good performances with the Stingrays.Football NSW Institute (7th, 19 pts): With Darcey Malone pulling the strings in midfield, Institute were usually a difficult opponent and were what you'd expect from an NTC program. Charlie Rule scored six times and continues to be one of the brightest young talents in the competition. Holly McNamara also impressed (5 goals) and I'm hoping that we see her in the W-League next season.Blacktown Spartans (8th, 18 pts): Plenty of players from the Future Matildas signed up for the Spartans in 2021 and this resulted in some impressive performances. It's a shame we won't get to see what this squad could have achieved with more time together. Rosie Galea was a real standout, whether playing in central midfield or on the wing, and showed why she was named the captain despite still being only 20 years old. Also some good news for Victory fans, Maja Markovski found some great form and was their top scorer with … 7 goals.Manly United (9th, 16 pts): It was always going to be hard for Tom Hopley to follow legendary coach Chris Williams, who left Manly after their win in the 2020 Grand Final. There were plenty of positive signs nonetheless, Tara Andrews and Remy Siemsen continued to bang in the goals (six for both of them). I don't think they played badly by any means, I think Manly have stayed at the same level while other teams have improved.North West Sydney Koalas (10th, 10 pts): A win over Sydney Olympic showed their potential, so they must be hoping next year that they can find that form on a consistent basis. Alisha Bass was good in the centre of their defence, showing her versatility after being a central midfielder last year. This pod is timely because Sophie Harding (a.k.a. the NPL NSW version of the Road Runner) and Claire Coelho have just re-signed with Newcastle Jets.Bankstown City (11th, 7 pts): Most importantly, they broke a 714 day winless streak by defeating Illawarra Stingrays 1-0 in Round 9. If they can keep this group of players together and make a few key additions, they'll move up the table next year. Olivia Price and Liana Danaskos were solid in central midfield all season.Emerging Jets (12th, 0 pts): With the Jets, you have to remember that player development is the goal, so I wouldn't read too much into them being at the bottom of the ladder. Mona Walker (midfield), Milan Hammond (forward) and Chloe Walandouw (defence) were a few of the players that impressed me when I saw them play. Hopefully, some of these players earn W-League contracts, it helps that Ash Wilson coaches this side as well as being the Jets W-League coach.ACT - Round 18No games, the ACT is in lockdown :(VICNPLWSuspended until at least 11:59pm Thursday 19/8 Last round played 17 of 21 (August 1st) - Highlights Catchups for 8,9,10,18Nike FC Cup - Quarter FinalsFinal 4Calder United - 3 time winnersCatherine Zimmerman, Harriet Withers, Julia SardoFC Bulleen Lions - 1 time winnersCaitlin Friend, Alex Natoli, Rebekah Stott, Tiff Eliadis, Gabby Garton (GK), Tyla Vlajnic, Kayla Morrison, Box Hill United - 1 time winnersBeth Mason Jones (GK), South Melbourne FC - Melina Ayres, Melissa Barbieri, Sofia Sakalis, Naomi Chinnama, Nat Martineau)Queen of the WeekEric loves a precision left-footed cross. In this podcast, we have an exciting conversation with Dr. Stephen V. Peters, who has been in public education for 20 years. He has been a middle school teacher, assistant principal, school principal and school leadership coach. He has recently completed a dissertation on Black fathers and the role their own learning experiences have shaped the ways they engage in the learning lives of their children. Dr. Peters discusses his research on how Black men embodied values of Black male fatherhood, their academic worldviews, and responsive forms of learning engagement as key roles, which informed their function in the learning lives of their children. Additionally, we discuss the implications of high-risk schools, black fathers and stereotypes, and the practices that Black fathers enact in order to support the learning and achievement of their children in schools. Highlights from this episode include: ● The factors that determine how a school is considered high risk. ● Discussion on how Black fathers are strategically involved in their children's learning despite the stereotypes that say otherwise. ● How Black men shaped their view of values of fathering and beliefs in learning from their father/father figure. ● A discussion of how the criminal justice systems affect Black fathers' involvement in their children learning. ● We also discuss how Dr. Peter's research has implications for district leaders and principals. *********************************************************************************************************************************** The Equity Experience Podcast is brought to you by Dr. Karla Manning, Founder & President of The Equity Leadership Group, LLC. Triumphal Entry: How Do People Respond When You Enter the Room? (Matthew 20:29-34 & Matthew 21:1-17) A message by Dr. Stephen Peters
In this message, Dr. Stephen Peters starts the New Year with a sermon from Numbers 13 and 14. Looking at the life of Caleb and the people of Israel we learn how God responds when we step up in faith to a challenge trusting what he tells us rather than what we see and feel.
In this message, Dr. Stephen Peters continues our Christmas series with a sermon on LOVE from Matthew 2:1-16. In it, he shows us Jesus' birth was far from the warm and fuzzy images we get from classic Christmas songs. Instead, Jesus' love-centered birth led to an explosive mix of emotions far and wide that produced tremendous conflict -- evidence that if we want to experience love, we must also be willing to experience conflict.
A cutting edge neurologist and passionate horseman, Dr. Stephen Peters has been a guiding figure in the understanding of how horses process information. In his collaborative efforts with Martin Black and Mark Rashad, he has provided a strong scientific process to horsemanship and has revolutionized the modern understanding of horse neurology. However, Peters is also passionate about the etherealness of horses and the way in which they are able to communicate with humans.
The Bible provides us with practical insights about how our attempt to live a life based on our accomplishments and affiliations can be more limiting than we think. In this lesson from Philippians 3:1-9, Dr. Stephen Peters encourages us to shift our confidence from a life shaped by our credentials to one conformed by the cross.
This week, our own Dr. Stephen Peters unpacks Philippians 1:14- 20. He shows us that part of keeping the right perspective is recognizing that God uses our travel restrictions to His advantage. God maximizes limiting geographies and circumstances to position us to be accessible agents of change in the lives of the people closest to us.

Every time we think we can make a definitive statement about how the human brain works, science makes advances, and in many cases, proves those beliefs to be wrong. The same is true of horses’ brains, which directly impacts how they learn, how they experience the world, and how we can more effectively work with them and provide them with better lives. Elise’s guest today, neuroscientist, author, and horseman, Dr. Stephen Peters, was frustrated by the many often opposing views about training and working with his own horses. Dr. Peters decided to apply his knowledge of the human brain to developing science-based horsemanship to understand how a horse’s brain and its behavior are related and how they, in turn, affect learning. Dr. Peters partnered with trainer and fifth-generation rancher, Martin Black, whose early years of training horses were guided by working for legendary horsemen Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt. Together, they wrote the book, Evidence-Based Horsemanship, to share their intriguing findings. In this episode, Dr. Peters shares his incredible insights on how the equine brain thinks and how we can apply this knowledge to work more effectively with our own horses. He also gives his impression of how he believes horses experience the world and how we can best interact with our horses to accommodate this. Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s guest, Dr. Stephen Peters. [1:39] What can the equine brain think? How does it think? And how can we apply this knowledge to working more effectively with our own horses? [6:22] What is Dr. Peters’ impression of how horses experience the world? And in particular, with regards to our interactions with them and creating that calm environment that is most beneficial to learning. [27:38] When Dr. Peters is working with young horses, what is the middle ground between exposing them to new experiences and completely “bubble-wrapping” them? [35:57] Has Dr. Peters been surprised by any of his findings as both a neuroscientist and a horseman? [41:07] It’s been proven that horses are good for humans, but are humans good for horses? [50:13] Dr. Peters and Elise discuss the ongoing evolution of horsemanship in understanding what is actually most beneficial for the horse. [52:20] About next week’s episode of Because of Horses. Horse Summit Tackles How Horses Think Why do we need a horse summit to learn how they think? Well, consider any relationship. The more you know what the other side needs and how they operate, the more you can build the relationship through those needs. Science has made huge strides in learning what actually goes on in a horse's brain. It's not anecdotal. It's evidence based. Dr. Stephen Peters is a neuroscientist working on the science of how horses think, feel, and learn. Dr. Stephen Peters is a neuroscientist working on the science of how horses think, feel, and learn. Dr. Peters teamed up with the famed horse trainer, Martin Black, and together wrote the book Evidence-Based Horsemanship. Back in May of 2014, we interview Martin Black about the book and you can hear it here. The theories Dr. Peters investigates are gaining acceptance throughout the horse industry. Maddy Butcher is the founder and editor of many equine related websites including Best Horse Practices-dot-com and HorseHead-dot-info. She sees real merit in theories of evidence-based horsemanship and, through her Best Horses Practices website, is producing the Best Horse Practices Summit. The horse summit will be in Durango, Colorado, October 8-10 and will feature both academic speakers and horse trainers and behaviorists. Maddy Butcher calls the horse summit a "TED talk for horse owners". “We wanted to offer something to horse owners and riders valuable to their interactions, and ideally improve the lives of horses,” she said. Ranae and I are working on plans to attend the horse summit. While Durango, Co is quite a distance from our home, we think the principles and techniques we learn will make a lasting contribution to our horsemanship knowledge. You can register for the Best Horse Practices Horse Summit here. If you register before August 1, you will not only save money, you will be entered into a drawing for highest quality wool felt saddle pad from 5 Star Equine Products!
