In milestone Episode 350 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy sits down with TEDx speaker, entrepreneur, actor, filmmaker, and Ikigai consultant Paul Barry for a conversation that goes far beyond business. As this episode releases, Paul is nearly 1,000 miles into his 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail journey, walking from Mexico to Canada while raising funds for cancer awareness and prevention in honour of his mother. Together, Kelly and Paul explore the Japanese concept of Ikigai, the intersection of what you love, what you are great at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for, and why so many people find themselves successful on paper but unfulfilled in life.Throughout the conversation, Paul shares his remarkable journey from actor and acting teacher to entrepreneur, coach, storyteller, and adventurer, offering powerful insights into purpose, reinvention, entrepreneurship, and the courage to choose an unconventional path. Whether discussing the closure of a startup, the lessons learned from caring for his parents through cancer, or the decision to embark on one of the world's most challenging long-distance hikes, Paul reminds us that true success is not about building the life others expect of us, but about having the freedom to build a life that is authentically our own.Key Takeaways: Success without fulfillment is not success. You do not have to spend your life living someone else's definition of success.Ikigai is found at the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.Your purpose is not fixed. It evolves as you evolve.Sometimes the most courageous decision is walking away from something that no longer serves you.Failure is often redirection, not defeat. If you are not fulfilled, ask yourself which part of your Ikigai is missing.Life is too short to spend decades waiting to do what you truly want to do.Freedom comes from intentionally designing your life, not accidentally drifting through it.You do not just make a living. You make a life.Connect with Paul BarryIf this conversation resonated with you and you'd like to follow Paul's journey, connect with him online or support his Pacific Crest Trail fundraiser.
If you listened to Episode 352 with Cynthia Kersey, you'll love this conversation. Think of it as a beautiful continuation of that thread, the work of changing lives through purpose-driven leadership, conscious business, and heart-centered impact. Today, I'm bringing you Janet Driver, someone I've known for many years through my connection with the Unstoppable Foundation. Janet is the Director of Partnerships at the Unstoppable Foundation, where she partners with generous supporters to create lasting transformation in underserved communities in rural Kenya. For the past 8 years, she has worked alongside global philanthropists to expand access to education, support emerging leaders, and help families develop the leadership, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills needed to break cycles of poverty. And this is what I love about Janet's work. She understands that true abundance is never just about one person rising. It is about the ripple effect. Janet and I dish on: Why the organization focuses highly on girls and women - The intention behind empowering women; building a strong family structure - Resources versus culture; tackling one thing at a time - The Unstoppable Foundation as a possibility creator - The vision; from providing sustainability to solving problems - Donating changes the giver more than the receiver; learn how - Money expands your capacity to receive when you use it wisely This conversation invites you to reflect and consider what you can do to support similar initiatives in your community. It took countless efforts and nearly three decades to convince Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda that World War II was over. When those efforts finally paid off, Hiroo Onoda went home to Japan. World War II was over. (Really. Truly.) But a group of Japanese soldiers stationed on Lubang Island in the Philippines weren't convinced. They didn't believe that Japan had surrendered. So they kept fighting. They terrorized locals. They evaded capture. Over the course of several years, Japanese officials made multiple attempts to convince the soldiers that the war had ended. Each time, Hiroo Onoda dismissed those attempts as enemy propaganda. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! As a second lieutenant in the Japanese Army, Hiroo Onoda took his job seriously. He'd been ordered to lead guerilla warfare missions on Lubang Island in the Philippines. He was told to never surrender. And when he received word that World War II had ended, Hiroo was certain that the message was a trick. So, he kept fighting. He kept fighting until 1974 – nearly 29 years after the war ended. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources!
