EDINBURG, Texas - Jeff Ward, dean of the college of fine arts at UT-Rio Grande Valley, moderated a panel discussion at the 6th Annual International Conference on Border Studies. The conference was co-hosted by UTRGV and the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas. The theme of the conference was “Transborderism: Reimagining Social Space.”As well as asking questions of the panelists, Ward offered his own perspective. Ward said that before moving to the Valley just over a year ago, he knew very little about the region.Just about the only thing he had heard of was migrant children being separated from their parents. He said his heart went out to them. Ward grew up on the east coast and before taking up his position at UTRGV, Ward was director of Kansas State University's school of music, theater, and dance. He said the UTRGV's women's Vaquero soccer team played a game at Kansas and as a soccer fan he went along to watch. He remembers thinking, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, that's a long name for a university. Now, he is in the Valley Ward feels like he is on a mission. “I feel like my mission is to be the ambassador to all of the people… my friends and family who don't live in the Valley to say, you don't understand what an amazing place this is.”Ward said it is important that UTRGV students have a “huge sense of pride” in who they are and what they are doing.“Many of our students here at UTRGV have grown up in the Valley. They've never been anywhere outside of the Valley,” Ward explained. “They need to realize what an amazing place they live in. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. We all know that phrase.”Ward said he speaks to people that visit the Valley for film festivals. He said they tell him: “I had no idea what a cool place this is.” He said they tell him they are going to go back to LA and tell everyone how cool the Valley is.He said one of the goals of the college of fine arts is to bring people to the Valley to enhance and grow the arts economy. But, a secondary goal, Ward said, is to turn those visitors into ambassadors for the Valley. “That they go back to wherever home is and say, whatever you hear on NPR, CNN, Fox News, name your news outlet, whatever flavor you have, they don't have it right. Let me tell you what the Valley's really about.”Ward added: “Ultimately, that is such an important message that many times we can only convey that through the arts.”Here is an audio recording of some of Ward's remarks at the 6th Annual International Conference on Border Studies. EDINBURG, Texas - Marcela Ronquillo Hinojosa, director of EarthX Latin America and former first lady of Matamoros, was a panelist at the recent 6th Annual International Conference on Border Studies. The event was co-hosted by UT-Rio Grande Valley and the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas. The theme of the conference was “Transborderism: Reimagining Social Space.” Speakers from 15 countries and more than 30 national and international academic institutions participated. In her remarks, Ronquillo Hinojosa said the arts have no borders.“The arts have no borders and proof lies in the development of the unique culture that has emerged across the US and Mexico border, showcasing our shared heritage and historic friendships over time,” she said.Ronquillo Hinojosa said she was a big supporter of an initiative started by a fellow panelist. Diane Milliken Garza, a commissioner for the Texas Commission on the Arts, is spearheading a project called Cultural Corridor. The first two events saw Brownsville and Matamoros residents come together to celebrate the arts on the Gateway International Bridge. Hidalgo and Reynosa residents did the same at the Hidalgo International Bridge. Here is an audio recording of Ronquillo Hinojosa's remarks at the 6th Annual International Conference on Border Studies. Though they disagreed scientifically about the nature of human beings, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace maintained a lasting friendship. On this episode of ID The Future from the vault, we continue to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Alfred Russel Wallace. Host Mike Keas concludes his three-part discussion with Michael Flannery about Flannery's book Nature's Prophet: Alfred Russel Wallace and His Evolution from Natural Selection to Natural Theology. Here, Flannery describes the tolerance Darwin and Wallace maintained for each other, a quality crucial to the spirit of science and academic inquiry. He notes that some contemporaries of Darwin lacked this spirit of professional civility, including Darwin's "bulldog" Thomas Henry Huxley. Flannery also relates his experiences at the 2nd Annual International Conference on Alfred Russel Wallace. The paper he presented raised some eyebrows and inspired students and fellow Wallace scholars alike, some of which were entirely unaware of Wallace's natural theology. Both Keas and Flannery hold out hope that the same spirit of tolerance Darwin and Wallace demonstrated can be emulated today by Darwin's defenders and critics. Source

The Growing Brain and the Upstream Etiologies of Neurodevelopmental disorders - AUTISM This weeks guest is me! I re-recorded a lecture that I gave in Florida this month at the Annual International Conference for the Institute for Functional Medicine. My goal in this lecture is to look at the upstream reasons that we are seeing more Autism and neurological diversity in children year upon year. It is a wide ranging look at the current state of the science and my thoughts on a unifying theory. As with Dr. Stone's interview last week with Grow Baby, this is a follow up discussion that is a critical primer for "mother's to be" regarding disease avoidance measures that can be taken for the best health of the maternal child dyad. Enjoy, Dr. M
After the gut, the second largest and most diverse microbiome in the body is located in the mouth. The oral microbiome is becoming an increasing area of interest in the medical community as research highlights several connections between chronic oral dysbiosis and systemic diseases, with inflammation being a common link. Pathogenic oral bacteria may influence inflammatory pathways particularly via the gut and by translocation through perivascular spaces. Thus, maintaining balance is the oral microbiome is a critical strategy for reducing inflammatory burden and reducing the risk of certain diseases. On this episode of Pathways to Well-Being, we welcome 2023 Annual International Conference speaker Doug Thompson, DDS, FAAMM, ABAAHP, to discuss new prevention and treatment opportunities that bridge the gap between dental care and health care. Summary of the article titled Conceptualising smart city with dimensions of technology, people and institutions from 2011 by Taewoo Nam and Theresa Prado, published at the 12th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see their collected core factors for establishing a smart city based on contemporary examples. This article offers strategic principles aligning to the three main dimensions of smart cities: integration of infrastructures and technology-mediated services, social learning for strengthening human infrastructure, and governance for institutional improvement and citizen engagement. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: This conceptual paper discusses how we can consider a particular city as a smart one, drawing on recent practices to make cities smart. A set of the common multidimensional components underlying the smart city concept and the core factors for a successful smart city initiative is identified by exploring current working definitions of smart city and a diversity of various conceptual relatives similar to smart city. The paper offers strategic principles aligning to the three main dimensions (technology, people, and institutions) of smart city: integration of infrastructures and technology-mediated services, social learning for strengthening human infrastructure, and governance for institutional improvement and citizen engagement. You can find the transcript through this link. What wast the most interesting part for you? What questions did arise for you? Let me know on twitter @WTF4Cities! Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! In this episode, James sits down with Amy Mack, CEO of the Institute for Functional Medicine, to discuss IFM’s leadership in the functional medicine space and the pivots the organization has made in response to COVID-19. One of the biggest changes the organization faced was transitioning their Annual International Conference, considered one of the best and most well-attended educational conferences in functional medicine, to a virtual platform. While Amy acknowledges the challenges of building a virtual community, she is excited for all the 2020 conference has to offer, including perspectives on how we can build immune resilience within the fragile health of many populations. Highlights from this episode include: How IFM’s COVID-19 Task Force supports the functional medicine community and plans for its continued guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic How we can take ideas at the bedrock of functional medicine, like immune resilience, and bring them into the mainstream How IFM brought their Annual International Conference to the virtual space What attendees will learn at AIC this year, and new opportunities for engagement and networking virtually What IFM has planned for the future as the healthcare ecosystem continues to evolve And so much more! Elise’s guest today on the Because of Horses podcast is Christy Landwehr, CEO of the Certified Horsemanship Association. The CHA was established to promote safety and education throughout the entire horse industry by certifying instructors, accrediting equine facilities, producing educational conferences, and publishing educational resources through a variety of media — all while building a great community of riders and instructors, and keeping it fun! Christy has been active in the horse industry for over 30 years and has taught children and adults to ride for more than 25 years. She is not only CHA’s CEO, but she’s also a Master Riding Instructor and Equine Facility Manager. She’s taught students in 4-H and Pony Club. She’s also the Colorado Horse Council Secretary, a past President of the American Youth Horse Council, and an AQHA Professional Horseman. Personally and professionally, Christy epitomizes what the CHA stands for. In this episode, Christy talks about the history of CHA; outlines the programs, certifications, and educational opportunities available from the CHA; shares details from both the perspective of a rider and of an instructor or a manager of an equine facility; why certifications are so important; and about CHA’s upcoming Annual International Conference in Colorado. Topics of Discussion: [:47] About Elise’s guest, Christy Landwehr. [1:42] How CHA got its start. [3:33] The importance of CHA’s role in certifying instructors. [6:07] Christy’s own experience in the horse industry and how she became CHA’s CEO. [11:28] About next week’s episode on Because of Horses. [12:59] Does Christy ever find herself having to illustrate why certification is so important? Or do people typically “get it?” [15:59] What do horse-enthusiasts need to know about certification and what to look for when selecting an instructor or lesson barn? [19:15] About CHA’s different certifications and processes. [21:29] Some of the reasons why instructors and equine facilities may seek certification from CHA. [24:05] CHA: more than just a certification program. Christy talks about some of the other certification programs offered and what she would like listeners to know. [28:07] About season 2 of Because of Horses! [30:59] The different levels involved in the equine facility manager and site certification. [36:47] About CHA’s Annual International Conference. [40:22] Christy’s observations on the concern that older riders are retiring from riding at a rate that seems higher than the number of young riders getting into riding. [42:52] Where to learn more about CHA and the upcoming conference. Know Someone Inspirational, Whose Life Has Been Forever Changed Because of Horses? So small, so abstract, it’s very hard to get your head around the idea that mitochondria are important. For me, knowing that these tiny organelles make up 10% of our total body weight (25% of the heart) helps put things into perspective. Mitochondria allow us respire with oxygen and produce vast amounts of an energy molecule called ATP. In fact, each one of us produces our body weight in ATP every day! The greater the number of healthy mitochondria, the better you feel and the faster you go. Even more incredible, recent research suggests that mitochondria come from a bacterial lineage and at some point made friends with our cells to form modern eukaryotes. My guest today is functional medicine practitioner and medical doctor, Robert Rountree. Dr. Rountree was named recipient of the Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award at IFM's 2015 Annual International Conference, held in Austin, Texas. Dr. Rountree received the award for his pioneering work in the development of Functional Medicine and his role as a highly inspirational and informational member of IFM’s faculty. Dr. Rountree is the Chief Medical Officer at Thorne Research. I learned everything I know about the mitochondria through Bryan Walsh’s Metabolic Fitness Pro and the Khan Academy. As promised, here’s the picture of the mitochondrial membrane: One of the most interesting supplements Dr. Rountree talks about during our interview is NiaCell® (nicotinamide riboside). I’ve since done a lot of reading and Dr. Tommy Wood agrees the research is promising. NAD+ levels control almost everything from mitochondrial biogenesis to ability to deal with inflammation and DNA damage. NAD+ drops with inflammation damaged mitochondria. If you’ve done a urinary organic acids test and you have an accumulation of malate, isocitrate, and alpha-ketoglutarate (all need NAD+) as well as lactate (produced in order to regenerate NAD+ from NADH), and possibly quinolinate and kynurenate (both feed into NAD+ production), then you either have high NAD+ requirements or poor NAD+ turnover. In these cases nicotinamide riboside is especially worth worth considering. Here’s the outline of this interview with Dr. Rountree: [0:05] Christopher’s welcome of Robert. [0:27] Dr. Rountree’s receipt of the 2015 Linus Pauling award and background as Chief Medical officer at Thorne. [2:00] Bob’s interest in nutraceuticals and nutritional treatments and the relationship to functional medicine. [4:28] Christopher’s interest in chatting with Bob about mitochondrial issues and true health. [6:25] Why athletes and people in general should care about their mitochondrial health. [7:32] The mitochondria as the core of healthy metabolic functioning. [9:09] How the mitochondria work: a very basic overview. [12:30] What does a mitochondria look like and what are they? [16:16] Things that make the interplay between cell and mitochondria work better. [17:54] How mitochondria and free radicals impact athletes. [19:18] The importance of using true “antioxidants.” [21:52] Problems that happen with damaged mitochondria: Parkinson’s and diabetes. [25:57] Are the gains needed possible from dietary changes alone? [29:06] How large amounts of carbohydrates damage the cellular pathways in the body. [31:07] What Dr. Rountree recommends for his patients in this area. [34:30] The testing that can be used to measure mitochondrial functioning. [40:00] The use of an unfamiliar nutrient supplement: nicotinamide riboside. [46:08] Why you want more mitochondria to achieve peak performance. [48:00] The supplements Dr. Rountree uses personally and why he believes everyone needs more than food to bolster resistance to chemicals in the environment. [51:44] Dr. Bob’s research and current practice and what he’s doing that is most exciting to him. The founder of the not for profit, Xolos For Chronic Pain Relief and Paws For Comfort, Nancy Gordon, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from California, USA. She became an expert on fibromyalgia, after a car accident left her disabled and she was diagnosed with both fibromyalgia and a mild traumatic brain injury. In researching natural options for relieving her chronic pain, Nancy discovered the rare dog breed Xoloitzcuintli (Xolos), whose body heat provides constant warmth and serves as a “24/7 no-microwave-live-heating pad” for muscle and joint pain. Nancy inspired the producers of the TV show Animal Planet, to create a documentary on her use of Xolos as the first service dog for fibromyalgia, which launched her nonprofit. Nancy also created a unique greeting card line, called Paws For Comfort, specifically to support people with chronic illness and disabilities and their caregivers. Nancy is currently launching two other inspirational platforms with her newly published books. The first workbook in a series, 7 STEPS OF HOPE Healing the Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Impact of Chronic Illness and Disability provides the platform for her online program and live experiential workshops. Pink, The 3 Legged Dog Who Lost Her Leg and Found Her Courage is the first volume of an inspirational children’s book series based on her three-legged service dog, Pink. Nancy and her Xolos have been featured on many TV segments, radio interviews, books, and magazines, including The Ladies Home Journal and National Fibromyalgia Association’s FM AWARE magazine. London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Audio News - LSHTM Podcast
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Audio News: June 4th 2009 WASHINGTON—International Global Health Conference Identifies Priorities For Poor Communities; Gates Award Endorses London School Of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine The poorest members of the global community—not necessarily geographically defined—are those who need to be targeted in healthcare development rather than countries labelled as "developing". Peter Goodwin hears the views of Hans Rosling of the Karonlinska Institute during the Annual International Conference on Global Health held in Washington DC. He also talks with the outgoing president of the Global Health Council (which hosts the conference), Nils Daulaire, with the London School of Hygiene's Director, Andy Haines, and alumni, James Hospedales, Ariella Bock, Cherie Carter and Khizer Husain about the relevance of their education in their work in global health all over the world, and about the significance of the Gates Award to the London School's Distance Learning programme and efforts to strengthen healthcare institutions.
A key issue in computer system security is to protect information against unauthorized access. Emerging workflow-based applications in healthcare, manufacturing, the financial sector, and e-commerce inherently have complex, time-based access control requirements. To address the diverse security needs of these applications, a Role Based Access Control (RBAC) approach can be used as a viable alternative to traditional discretionary and mandatory access control approaches. The key features of RBAC include policy neutrality, support for least privilege, and efficient access control management. However, existing RBAC approaches do not address the growing need for supporting time-based access control requirements for these applications. In this talk, I will present a Generalized Temporal Role Based Access Control (GTRBAC) model that combines the key features of the RBAC model with a powerful temporal framework. The proposed GTRBAC model allows specification of a comprehensive set of time-based access control policies, including temporal constraints on role enabling, user-role and role-permission assignments, and role activations. The model provides an event-based mechanism for providing context based access control, as well as expressing dynamic access control policies, which are crucial for developing secure workflow-based enterprise applications. I will discuss various design guidelines for managing complexity of policy specification as well as an XML-based GTRBAC policy specification language.
