Marcia Franklin talks with playwright Samuel D. Hunter about his work, including “The Whale,” which was adapted into a movie with Brendan Fraser, who won an Academy Award. The two also discuss the role of Idaho in his works, and the importance of the humanities.
Samuel D. Hunter is the award-winning playwright and screenwriter behind “The Whale.” His latest play, “A Case for the Existence of God,” is about an unlikely friendship between two men who have one thing in common: they're single fathers of young daughters. Samuel was inspired to write the play after he adopted his own daughter and realized that as a parent he no longer had "the luxury of being cynical.” He joins guest host Talia Schlanger to talk about the play, and why he puts so much of himself in his work.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by actors Michael Sturgis & Sean Luc Rogers from the Echo Theater Company's production of Samuel D. Hunter's play Clarkston, which is playing at the Atwater Village Theatre in LA through October 21. Here's the synopsis: "Welcome to Clarkston, Washington, where Jake (Michael) and Chris (Sean) meet working the night shift at Costco. Jake, a middle-class, educated new hire who's a distant relative of explorer William Clark, has fled his privileged life in Connecticut after being diagnosed with a serious illness. Chris, a would-be writer with a meth-addicted mom, is stuck in what he fears is a dead-end life in a dead-end town. Soon, their tentative attraction develops into something much deeper and more complicated. The two actors talk about what drew them to the project, the play's complex themes around friendship, loyalty and the things in life that we don't even give ourselves permission to want. Other topics include: taking a field trip to Costco and gorging at the food court, hearing the audience cry during intense scenes, the emotional hangover from doing the show, and taking an onstage selfie every night and seeing friends in the audience in the background. www.echotheatercompany.com
We're back with a fresh episode, baby! Written by Samuel D. Hunter and directed by Darren Aronofsky, THE WHALE is a 2022 film based on Hunter's stage play of the same title. Despite an incredible performance by Brendan Fraser, which won him an Oscar, the movie falls short of having an impactful message about... anything. From its confused plot, lame dialogue, and the film's wildly fatphobic perspective, this could be among the worst Oscar-winning movies of all time. This month Brian speaks with the busy playwright about dramatizing Idaho, promoting the film of 'The Whale,' and working on a new play at Steppenwolf.
A Case for the Existence of God is by the American playwright Samuel D. Hunter. It is a two-hander that explores the unlikely connections between two men unalike in class, race and sexuality. Samuel is also the creator of the very unsettling hit play The Whale, a film adaption of which earned two Academy Awards. Two separate productions of A Case for the Existence of God are being presented in April — one by Outhouse Theatre Co at the Seymour Centre in Sydney and the other by Red Stitch in Melbourne.

Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met regisseur Erik Whien. In een tijd waarin verschillen belangrijker lijken dan overeenkomsten, maakt regisseur Erik Whien bij Theater Rotterdam een nieuwe voorstelling A Case for the Existence of God.

Inwood Art Works Founder and Executive Producer, Aaron Simms had the pleasure of speaking with local Inwood resident, playwright, and screen writer of the "The Whale", Samuel D. Hunter. We recorded the podcast on location for the first time in front of a live audience who have just finished screening the award winning film to kick off the 6th annual Inwood Film Festival. Rosie Sheehy trained at RADA graduating in 2015, and has already done some incredible work thus far. Working for the RSC, the Sherman Theatre and most recently, the National Theatre in London. Rosie recently finished Romeo and Julie a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, written by the great Gary Owen. It played at the Sherman Theatre, the National and the Sherman again for the final weeks of the tour. Rosie takes me through the journey she's been on with the play, playing alongside Callum Scott Howells and the brilliance of Gary Owens' writing. She's also appeared on stage in Samuel D. Hunter's play The Whale where she played Ellie (played by Sadie Sink in the film with Brendan Fraser), and also on TV in HBO's masterpiece Chernobyl. A really touching episode discussing the play and the cruel and heartbreaking undercurrent of both this new adaptation and the original play, one that I enjoyed very much. Oscar buzz is heating up and the award for Best Actor goes to Brendan Fraser in The Whale! There is no doubt Brendan is winning Oscar night for his role as a 600-pound man named Charlie in Darren Aronofsky's new film. We talk about director Aronofsky and his wild career before witnessing his latest. While the marketing made it look uplifting, this film was rather unpleasant and drew a mixed reaction from this Lodgecast audience. The movie also stars Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton. Based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter. Congratulations Brendan Fraser! Well deserved!
Today on the show, we're joined by Samuel D. Hunter – playwright-turned-screenwriter of moving new drama, The Whale. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film tells the tale of Charlie (Brendan Fraser) – a reclusive former teacher who developed destructive eating habits following a devastating past tragedy. With seemingly days to live, Charlie desperately attempts to reconnect with a daughter who resents him, and is sinking into a cynicism that Charlie finds heartbreaking. It's a film that, you may have heard, has stoked a wide range of reactions, which Sam and I get into in detail. We talk about its provoking title, which he explains was designed to prod at people's prejudices before taking on a completely different context in the story. We discuss the challenges and opportunities presented to Sam when it came to adapting his stage play into a screenplay – and what the scarcity of media telling the tales of plus-size protagonists does for the fabric of our society. This is a spoiler-filled conversation so please be sure to watch The Whale before listening in.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. | Review | Adapted from Samuel D. Hunter's stage play of the same name, Darren Aronofsky's The Whale marks the triumphant return to the big screen for 90's heartthrob and action star Brendan Fraser. It's a small but powerful story of love, loss, and that old familiar struggle against the dark void of depression. This is a tough film to swallow.
In this week's episode, we break down the film The Whale. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Samuel D. Hunter, and stars Brendan Fraser. The film is an emotional rollercoaster and leaves all of us feeling something. At the movie's core, we tried to determine whether this was a tragedy or a comedy. The result will vary for everyone but somewhere in the middle, leaving you conflicted. We spent a good time working on what the core theme of the film was, and we came to the conclusion it was gravitating toward honesty. The film calls for the characters to be honest with themselves and those closest to them. If you can do that from the heart, your life starts to fit together. As a call to action, I know that all of us have something left unsaid to someone important to us, so at the very least, saying something from the heart to someone who matters to you can be a gateway towards something better. Without further preamble, please enjoy this deep dive into The Whale! The Whale stars Brendan Fraser in his triumphant return to the big screen, but it's also a notable return for Darren Aronofsky, whose last film mother! (2017) still has a lot of folks scratching their heads. No matter. Based on the 2012 play by Samuel D. Hunter (who writes the screenplay for his own adaptation), The Whale has emerged as an awards favorite for Brendan Fraser and A24, as well as a notable showcase for Sadie Sink and Hong Chau. Writer Eva Anderson (You're the Worst, WeCrashed) helps us kick off a new year of Mama Needs a Movie with a discussion of the year-end awards contender, THE WHALE starring Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton. Darren Aronofsky directed this 2022 adaptation of playwright Samuel D. Hunter's intimate drama about a reclusive and obese teacher trying to reconcile with his estranged daughter. THE WHALE has received plaudits for Brendan Fraser's comeback role, but equally criticisms for a supposedly thin characterization of grief and an eating disorder. Join us as we journey into the belly of THE WHALE, but not before some diversions into Jesus Christ Superstar, January 6th, Elia Kazan, Hunter Biden's art, Boris Karloff, RRR, and much much more!

The Whale invites us to identify with a man in a precarious state of isolation that has been exacerbated by a potentially lethal mix of technology and our culture of body shaming. God lytting!

Wow. The day we recorded this episode, March 8, 2020, was a beautiful sunny 60 degrees in southeast Michigan. Shelly was with Nathan, Laura, Mat, Jim and Jen at Fundamental Sound Co and we had a wonderful time reading The Whale by Samuel D. Hunter. The cast read scenes between Charlie, an obese man confined to his home who teaches online writing classes, and the very few people that he interacts with in real life. They did a great job. I was sincerely moved by their performances and hope you will be too. Later on that day, THOUSANDS of us gathered for a Bernie rally in downtown Ann Arbor. Ana, my co producer, got to play her music and open for Bernie. No one was scared. We went back to Fundamental Sound Co later for a beautiful house concert and no one was scared. We danced and hugged and toasted. That's why this one will always be special. Stay safe out there.
Samuel D. Hunter is the MacArthur genius award-winning playwright who may have started small — as a teenager growing up in Idaho — but has since assembled a deep roster of plays set there. And that's the point: small towns, all the better to explore big ideas. A Bright New Boise, Lewiston/Clarkston, Pocatello. For his latest, Greater Clements, he mines new territory, and he says it's both his most personal and his most ambitious attempt yet. This is the first of our one-on-one, writer-to-writer conversations about not just a play, but the full backdrop on what it takes to create theater, and a full body of work. We're calling them our “backdrop eavesdrops." Greater Clements is currently playing at Lincoln Center Theater through January 19, 2020. On this podcast, PlayPenn artistic director Paul Meshejian discusses the PlayPenn Annual Conference. I spoke with Meshejian in 2013 about the conference; since then, many plays that have been workshopped there have helped shaped the national conversation around contemporary theater. These new plays transfer from the conference to regional stages, and J.T. Rogers's drama Oslo, about the negotiations surrounding the Oslo Accords, opens on Broadway April 13, 2017, featuring New Paradise Laboratories founding member and longtime Philly actor Jeb Kreager. The highlight reelPlayPenn describes itself as "an artist-driven organization dedicated to improving the way in which new plays are developed. Employing an ever-evolving process, PlayPenn creates a relaxed tension within which playwrights can engage in risk-taking, boundary-pushing work free from the pressures of commercial consideration."Some of the conference's esteemed graduates and awards include:MacArthur Fellowship: Samuel D. "Most of the plays that I write, I think, come out of a deep fear to write the play." Sam Hunter on THE WHALE's central character, writing as a window to the soul, and what scared him about writing a play whose protagonist is a 600-pound man. (2012/13 season)
