Episode Notes S6E10 - Join us as we sit down with the one and only Laura Pursell. She'll be telling us tales from acting to singing her hits and much much more. Her nostalgic, lush and heartfelt voice, Laura Pursell's smooth west coast vocals are backed by the genius of her famous father Bill Pursell, who wrote 8 out of 10 arrangements and played piano on all 10 tracks. The rich orchestration, recorded by Nashville's A-team players. Mr. Pursell is perhaps best known for his hit record "Our Winter Love," but also played piano on many of Johnny Cash's albums in the 1960s, and worked as a session musician and arranger for Patsy Cline, Johnny Paycheck, Hoover, Joan Baez, Eric Andersen, Scotty Moore, J.J. Cale, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, and others. In 1985, Pursell was named Composer of the Year by the Tennessee Music Teachers Association. At 18, she was cast as Dick Van Patton's niece in a nationally televised Christmas special, “The Gift of Song”, starring a host of country music stars. Relocating to LA in the early 90's, she studied at the South Coast Repertory and Beverly Hills Playhouse and has starred in countless stage productions all over LA, including "Blue Moon Dancing" by Ed Graczyk, "In the City for the Summer" (Variety singled out her gritty performance), and the farcical, outrageous "And Then There was Nun" which played to sold out houses for 2 extensions, where she did a hilarious sendup of Gloria Swanson. She was a long time member of the Company of Angels, LA's oldest repertory theatre, winning a Dramalogue Award for her saucy, sword-wielding performance in the mainstage production of “Zastrozzi”. She appeared in an iconic video for Weird Al Yankovic, spoofing Tanya Harding in the "Mmmm Mmmm" song (where she did her own figure skating). She appeared in several episodes of "Days of Our Lives" and had a small but pivotal role in "The Landlady" starring Talia Shire. In 2013, she was cast as one of the three leads in a hilarious coming-of-middle-age web series called "Living the Dream", and in 2015, she had the starring role in "Only the Moon Howls", a moving one act which won the Encore! Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Her performance was singled out for its "deep emotional access" and hailed as "heartbreaking", "truthful", "sensitive" and "vulnerable". A film version of the piece is planned for late 2015. In 2001, she landed a plum role, singing for Betty and President Gerald Ford in Palm Springs. Over the years, she has recorded and performed with some of the greatest jazz musicians on the west coast. She has performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, Dublin Ireland and in west coast venues such as Spazio, Vitello's, The Money Tree, Barone's, Monteleone's, The San Ysidro Ranch (Santa Barbara), Vicky's of Santa Fe (Palm Springs) and the Canyon Club. She appeared with Gary Tole's "Legends of Swing" orchestra and the Doug MacDonald's 13-piece "Jazz Coalition". She currently performs every Thursday at Mixology 101 in the Grove at the LA Farmer's Market with a stellar jazz trio. Send us a textThis week I had the pleasure of having a fascinating conversation with Allison Gregory on this recent episode of Playwright's Spotlight and her approach of writing about historical and mythological characters and exploring outside their known stories. We delved into the philosophy of "when we are", letting the story find us, the power of the #2 pencil and writing longhand, stealing from the best, obtaining the rights to other's works and public domain. We also discuss commissioning adaptations, tried and true material, embracing constructs, and knowing the audience of children's theatre. It's a wonderful chat I hope everyone feels motivated and inspired by. Enjoy!Allison Gregory's work has been produced nationally and internationally for multigenerational audiences by a fusion of professional theaters, academic stages, and nontraditional spaces. She has received commissions and development from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Kennedy Center, South Coast Repertory, Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Playwrights' Center, the Skirball Foundation, Geva Theatre, Seattle Rep, ACT Theater, Orlando Shakes, the National New Play Network (NNPN), Hedgebrook, the New Harmony Project, and Banff Playwrights Lab. Her plays range from satires centering on underrepresented historical figures to contemporary interpretations of mythology, intimate dramas, and exuberant, innovative theatre for young people. Her plays are published by Dramatic Publishing, Playscripts, Concord Theatricals, Smith & Krauss, and Rain City Press and include – Not Medea, Junie B. It is a pleasure to welcome actor and dancer Lawrence Kao to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born in Hacienda Heights, California, his parents groomed Lawrence to become a pediatrician. He received a bachelor's degree in Theater at the University of California at Irvine. While at the university, he expanded his passion for dance and joined the Kaba Modern dance group. Lawrence and the group found themselves in the national spotlight when they auditioned for the inaugural season of MTV's American Best Dance Crew. After graduating from the University of California at Irvine, Lawrence worked at award-winning theater companies such as the Guthrie Theater, East West Players, South Coast Repertory, and San Diego Repertory. In addition to joining the dance group Kinjaz, Lawrence continued to land roles on several popular television shows such as Hawaii 5-0, Law & Order: SUV, NCIS: Los Angeles & New Orleans, The Originals, and The Walking Dead. Recently, Lawrence Kao was a series regular on Netflix's Wu Assassins, where he portrayed Tommy Wan. He reprised the role in the 2022 original film Fistful of Vengeance. He joined the cast of the CW's latest Walker spin-off: Walker Independence, as Kai. Kai is a newcomer to the town of Independence, looking to restart his life. Award-winning playwright and co-writer of Pixar's TURNING RED, Julia Cho was born and raised in the arid suburbs of Southern California and Arizona. After a fairly uneventful childhood, she unexpectedly discovered theater as a teen and subsequently foiled her parents' expectations of a life of respectability and normalcy.Disney and Pixar's “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.Instead, armed with an MFA in writing from NYU and a prestigious fellowship at The Juilliard School, Julia launched herself into the New York theater scene. She soon landed residencies at the Sundance Lab and New Dramatists and productions at high-profile theaters in NYC and across the country. Memorable productions include “The Language Archive” (winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Award), “Aubergine” and “Office Hour.” For her body of work, she received the 2020 Windham-Campbell Literary Prize for Drama which wrote: “Alternately lyrical and sharp, rigorous and whimsical, Cho's plays demand that we listen.”Alongside her theatrics, Cho has also cultivated a career as a writer and producer of a broad range of television shows from cult sci-fi (“Fringe”) to character-driven drama (“Big Love,” “Halt and Catch Fire”). She also adapted the critically-acclaimed novel The Madonnas of Echo Park for HBO and Starz, which showcased her ability to transform eloquent fiction into dynamic and propulsive narrative.Driven by keen curiosity and a passion for language, Julia strives to create work that expands our worlds and sparks our deepest empathies. She's currently under commission for South Coast Repertory to write a new play and is a Co-Executive Producer for the Amazon series, “Paper Girls.” In other words, she's following a movie about four thirteen-year-old girls with a series about four twelve-year-old girls. A project about four eleven-year-old girls is forthcoming.

ABOUT THE GUEST Matthew Arkin has over 40 years experience on stage, film, and television. He is a fiction author and Director of the Acting Intensive Program at South Coast Repertory, is an associate faculty member and director at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His theater credits include numerous Broadway and off-Broadway appearances, most notably in the role of Gabe in New York production of the Pulitzer Prize winning Dinner With Friends, for which he received a Drama Desk Nomination. The Hagen Workshop introduces actors to the exercises developed by the legendary Uta Hagen. Equally applicable to work on stage or film and television, each exercise focuses on a different challenge facing the actor. By practicing the exercises, the actor achieves a deeper awareness of his own behaviors and impulses, thereby allowing for greater contact with self and others during performance. Each exercise is addressed by the individual actor at home and then brought into class for greater exploration. This allows each student to work at their own pace and focus on areas where they need the most development. ABOUT THE PODCAST The Arkin Brothers Talk About Movies https://www.arkinbros.com/  "We grew up on movie sets. Now we act, write, direct, produce, edit, and teach. So we know a thing or two about movies. And even when we don't, we'll talk about them anyway. Each week we dissect one movie and whatever else strikes our fancy. Informed opinions, inside information, occasional guests, personal stories, and tons of spoilers."

Mr. Freeman was a member of the founding faculty of The Actors Center in New York City, where he taught throughout the eleven years of its existence.  In addition, he enjoyed a long association with The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco as a core faculty member of its MFA program and a member of its acting company. He also served as the founding Head of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater Actor Training Program. He has also taught at Rutgers University, NYU, SUNY Purchase, The Atlantic Theatre Company, and The Stella Adler School of Acting. In addition, he has several film and television roles to his credit.   How did Scott become an acting teacher? "Actors, not students, but Future Colleagues" How “ego” can help you. Teaching isn’t all about knowledge, its also about form Why is curiosity important to an actor? “Its a curiosity about people and why people are the way they are” “How did they get there?” “Having an insatiable curiosity is paramount to being an actor.” Tips about Acting Class: Carve your own path and say what you need Make your ears grow bigger Make it about your technique Resist the urge to make it about your career Craft in the Class, The Business outside Do you have ownership of your craft or are you just waiting for someone else to tell you what to do? Reliability and Longevity If you have questions, make them about craft! Start to figure out why you want to do this and what you want to do When you know what it is, just keep imagining how good it’s gonna feel when you achieve it! Advanced/ Intermediate Actor: They know where to go How to build this character Determine what they’re going through And the ability to go there Advanced actors can do this more reliably. You can work on pure craft and the career “I’m trying to get you to work fast and slow at the same time.” You have to get to product while having the integrity of process. Tap into the jugular vein. “It’s not about showing I know what I am doing, it's about me knowing what I am doing.”

From never being on a TV staff, to becoming the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards,” Netflix's original foray into dramatic television and the corrupted world of politics… this week's interview with screenwriter, painter, and playwright Beau Willimon is sure to inspire you! Beau Willimon is a screenwriter, playwright, producer and most recently, an executive producer, showrunner and creator of Netflix's original series “House of Cards,” a wicked one-hour drama, from Media Rights Capital, that slithers behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C. His play “Farragut North,” became the basis for the motion picture screenplay “Ides of March,” which he co-wrote with George Clooney and Grant Heslov. “Ides of March” earned Willimon Academy Award®, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it won The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Award for Best Screenplay. Other plays include “Lower Ninth” (Flea Theater, 2008; UK premiere, Donmar Warehouse, 2010), and “Spirit Control” (Manhattan Theatre Club, 2010). Subsequent productions of his plays have been mounted across the U.S. and overseas. Willimon was a recipient of the Lila Acheson Wallace Juilliard Playwriting Fellowship, named 2008 Playwright-in-Residence at the Donmar Warehouse, and he is a two-time winner of the Lincoln Center Le Comte du Nouy Award. Current theater commissions include works for the National Theatre of Great Britain, South Coast Rep, and the Flea Theater. His most recent play, “The Parisian Woman,” premieres at South Coast Repertory in the spring and will star Dana Delany, Steven Culp, Linda Gehringer and Rebecca Mozo. The play was inspired by Henri Becque's “La Parisienne.” Recently Willimon co-founded Westward Productions, a film and television production company, with co-founder Jordan Tappis. Among Westward Production's current projects is the forthcoming “Wally and Andre Shoot Ibsen” – a film adaption of Ibsen's play “Master Builder” developed by Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, directed by Jonathan Demme. Willimon is an Executive Producer on the film. Other projects in development include a documentary about adventure traveler Karl Bushby's quest to circumnavigate the globe on foot over the course of two decades, and a documentary about Westerly Windina, a transgender Australian woman formerly known as legendary pro-surfer Peter Drouyn. In addition to his career as a writer and producer, Willimon served on a number of political campaigns, including Chuck Schumer's 1998 senate race, Bill Bradley's 2000 presidential race, Hillary Clinton's 2000 senate race and Howard Dean's 2004 presidential race. Willimon graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1999 and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University's School of the Arts in 2003. A St. Louis native, he now resides in Brooklyn, NY. From never being on a TV staff, to becoming the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards,” Netflix’s original foray into dramatic television and the corrupted world of politics… this week’s interview with screenwriter, painter, and playwright Beau Willimon is sure to inspire you!Beau Willimon is a screenwriter, playwright, producer and most recently, an executive producer, showrunner and creator of Netflix’s original series “House of Cards,” a wicked one-hour drama, from Media Rights Capital, that slithers behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C.His play “Farragut North,” became the basis for the motion picture screenplay “Ides of March,” which he co-wrote with George Clooney and Grant Heslov. “Ides of March” earned Willimon Academy Award®, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it won The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Award for Best Screenplay.Other plays include “Lower Ninth” (Flea Theater, 2008; UK premiere, Donmar Warehouse, 2010), and “Spirit Control” (Manhattan Theatre Club, 2010). The play was inspired by Henri Becque’s “La Parisienne.”Recently Willimon co-founded Westward Productions, a film and television production company, with co-founder Jordan Tappis. Among Westward Production’s current projects is the forthcoming “Wally and Andre Shoot Ibsen” – a film adaption of Ibsen’s play “Master Builder” developed by Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, directed by Jonathan Demme. Willimon is an Executive Producer on the film. Other projects in development include a documentary about adventure traveler Karl Bushby’s quest to circumnavigate the globe on foot over the course of two decades, and a documentary about Westerly Windina, a transgender Australian woman formerly known as legendary pro-surfer Peter Drouyn. In addition to his career as a writer and producer, Willimon served on a number of political campaigns, including Chuck Schumer’s 1998 senate race, Bill Bradley’s 2000 presidential race, Hillary Clinton’s 2000 senate race and Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential race.Willimon graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1999 and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University’s School of the Arts in 2003. ANTIC The Atari 8-bit Podcast

This is ANTIC, the Atari 8-bit podcast. I’m Kevin Savetz.   I love old computers. If you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you knew that already. I also love musical theater. So when I found out about Bits & Bytes, a 1983 musical about computers — well, that’s right in my wheelhouse.    Bits & Bytes was an educational touring production, created by South Coast Repertory Theater, a professional theatre company located in Costa Mesa, California. It was a 45-minute musical show, aimed at school kids, that was performed at elementary schools across Southern California from January through June of 1983. More than 60,000 children saw the show.   The story is about Happy, a naive girl who goes into a computer store for the first time, wondering if a computer can “solve all her problems and make her truly happy.” Morton B. Norton, a pushy, overzealous computer salesman, tries to sell her a computer, with the help of wacky sidekicks, Bits and Bytes. Through speech and song, the team teaches Happy about computers — what they can and can’t do. A computer could help her be more organized, get her homework done, and play games. But Happy learns that a computer cannot really think, and is not a substitute for real, human friends.    ***   The goal of the play was to “show the realistic capabilities of computers as distinguished from commercial hypes and science fiction fantasy.” Another goal was to emphasize the “talents unique to human beings — what makes us different from computers.”    South Coast Repertory Theater’s educational touring productions took short original plays into area primary schools. The topic of computers was chosen for the 1983 production because surveyed teachers, parents, and principals overwhelmingly chose “computer literacy” as a topic they wanted to see covered. (Previous educational touring shows included Tomato Surprise, about nutrition; The Fitness Game, about physical fitness; and The Energy Show, about conserving energy.)   The play was written by Michael Bigelow Dixon and Jerry Patch, with music by Diane King. It was directed by John-David Keller, with set design by Dwight Richard Odle. The assistant director/choreographer was Diane dePriest.   An ensemble of five played all the roles, with one doubling as stage manager.  The cast was Robert Crow, Sam Hamann, James Le Gros, Laura Leyva, and Deborah Nisimura.    Bits & Bytes won the 1983 Pioneer Drama Service award for best new play. It ran for 246 performances, breaking the booking record for South Coast Repertory.   The January 29, 1983 issue of the Los Angeles Times said: “...in some respects the current show is the most impressive so far. Now that computer technology has entered the home and workplace—as well as the shopping mall—it’s noteworthy that a play can tell us how much more computers can do than launch missiles and gobble up space villains. … Diane King composed such a fine score—which includes evocations of different eras in pop music—that it almost has commercial possibilities of its own.   “Laura Leyva plays Happy, the girl who, for a very long time, is led to believe—along with the rest of us—that the computer will solve all our problems. That’s a dangerous and depressingly facile notion whose emphasis, early on, far outweighs the authors’ concluding moral that ‘computers can only deal with facts, not feelings.’   “But Bits & Bytes humorously shows its audience of kids how advanced and widespread the computer revolution has become and that they stand well ahead of their parents at its ramparts.”   ***   Texas Instruments donated a computer to the production: a TI 99/4A with monitor, peripheral expansion box, speech synthesizer, disk drives, and software. The computer was used as part of the set.   I interviewed three people who helped create Bits & Bytes: first, Michael Bigelow Dixon, who is co-author of the play. Next we’ll hear from Diane King, the composer. Finally we’ll hear from Laura Leyva, the actress who played the roll of Happy.   The interview with Michael Bigelow Dixon took place on March 9, 2018, with Diane King on March 6, and with Laura Leyva on March 16.   Look at the show notes, where you’ll find several photographs of the Bits & Bytes cast, reviews of the play, and articles about it. If you’d like to read the play or the score, that’s trickier. They are not online due to copyright. I borrowed copies via interlibrary loan.   If you saw this play, I would love to hear your memories of it. You can always email me at antic@ataripodcast.com.   Special thanks to Tania Thompson at South Coast Repertory for providing background information about this production, to Laura Leyva for providing photographs, to Michael Bigelow Dixon for providing articles from his archive, and to Diane King for digitizing her recordings from tape and allowing me to use them for this episode.   Photos from Bits & Bytes   Bits & Bytes article in Today Magazine, July 1983   Bits & Bytes in Family Computing Magazine, June 1984   Bits & Bytes in InfoWorld, Feb 28 1983   The Annotated Bits & Bytes - Orange County Magazine 1983-06   Education Through Entertainment - The Computing Teacher, 1983-10   Bits & Bytes study guide   South Coast Repertory Theater

Today’s episode is sponsored by Knit Dizzney 2014, hosted by us, the KnottyGirls Knitcast and Dizzy Blonde Studios. Knit Dizzney is set for September 7, 2014 at the Disneyland Resort. Yarn is still available! (T shirts and bags are sold out)! Get all the details at the Dizzy Blonde Studios blog. Catching Up: (0:42) Laura went to a wedding anniversary and saw a bunch of kids playing Doctor Who, which was cute. She's been watching Game of Thrones and Doctor Who. She updated her stash in Ravelry (finally). She's been getting ready for the Southern California fiber festival season, so lots of dyeing (this also applies to the Knit Dizzney yarn). She's also been setting up the Knit Dizzney pre-orders. We talk about Lilo and Stitch. Jen went to Six Flags to ride the Colossus roller coaster one more time before it closes. She saw Chef, which she really enjoyed. She's back to doing a bit of running. She also baked some delicious cookies for a bake sale to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She's been spinning up and plying the Knitpicks Full Circle Roving in the Fawn Colorway.  Then she's going to start on some Knitpicks Wool of Andes in Sapphire Heather (a blue ) and Amethyst Heather (purple).  She entered some stuff in the Orange County Fair and was the division winner for Handknit Clothing with her Safe at Home Cardigan and for Knit and Crochet Accessories with her Cactus Flower shawl. She's super surprised and happy. And she was cast in a play at South Coast Repertory. It's bilingual and she's really excited. In the Knitting Bag: (14:14) Laura is working on a slipped stitch hat for her other brother, out of Knitpicks Brava in Celestial Blue and Camel Heather. This is her own design. Jen is working on the blanket part of the Heirloom Layette Set by Kerin Dimeler-Laurence out of Cascade Heritage in Snow. She's also working on Ginny’s Cardigan by Mari Chiba from Unofficial Harry Potter Knits out of Wollmeise Pure in Chim Chim Chimney for Camp Loopy Month 2. The knitting is done, she just needs to weave in ends, graft the underarms and block it. She is also working on the Playful Stripes Cardigan by Alana Dakos for the new baby out of Cascade 220 Superwash Sport out of teals and pinks and greys. She'll probably put that in the PAL KAL hosted by ACTually KNITting Podcast. And she worked a bit on her Leah’s Lovely Cardigan from More Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Finished Objects: (18:02) Laura finished her Down the Garden Path Shawl by Michele DuNaeir in Lambie Toes in Special Hell. Except it needs blocking. Devil's Tower: (19:23) Laura plans to cull her Devil's Tower and get rid of projects that are no longer of interest to her. Frog Pond: (21:12) Laura frogged two projects in 30 minutes. She had trouble with her Yggdrasil Afghan by Lisa Jacobs out of reclaimed Berroco Vintage Chunky in Chocolate. She frogged the whole thing because she accidentally started working back and forth for a bit and hence had a big hole. And she had to frog her Knitted Scale Mail Gloves because she failed to read the pattern. She started working them in the round, but they are supposed to be knit flat. She figured out how to knit the scales in the round, but were turning out too small. And she re-started them, knitting in stockinette instead of garter stitch. On Deck: (27:52) Laura will be making a second pair of the knitted scale mail gloves for her stepgranddaughter, with a rainbow pattern. She also wants to make a Dreambird by Nadita Swings out of either Dizzy Blonde yarn as a booth sample, Ink by Hanna Maciejewska out of Dizzy Blonde Studios Superwash Sock. And she wants to make an Effortless Cardigan by Hannah Fettig out of Dizzy Blonde DK.  And she wants to make the Motoring Madness mittens by Audrey Nicklin for her husband out of some yarn she dyed to match his dog, Sabre. Jen wants to make the Dump Truck Cardigan from 60 Quick Baby Knits for her nephew out of Knitpicks Stroll Sport, another Playful Stripes Cardigan for the new baby of indeterminate gender out of Cascade 220 SW Sport, the Baby Yours Sweater and she'll use the motif to also make a blanket and hat so there will be full a layette out of Cascade 220 SW Sport in Aran (a cream). She's making the Porcupine Blanket from 60 Quick Baby Knits out of Cascade 220 Superwash. She wants to make some other sweaters to get rid of some worsted weight acrylic she has: the Lace Edged Cardigan and the Colorblock Cardigan. And she will make the Beulah Cardigan for Camp Loopy Month 3 out of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Dried Rose. And she will be making the Bobble Bearded Beanie by Topsy Turvy, but it's crochet, so she's worried. Knit Culture: (36:09) We check in on our stashdown goals. Laura has knit and crocheted 2500 meters of 91000 meters totally. She revises her goal from 25% (which would be 23000 meters) to 10% (9500 meters), which is more achievable. Jen has more yarn yardwise in stash, but she has a lot of laceweight, which gets her a lot more yardage per skein. She had a goal of 20000 yards, she is at about 7000 yards knit. She is not going to change her goal, because she believes its achievable. We want to hear how you're doing with your goals. Let us know in the Stashdown Thread. We remind you of July's theme of music. August's theme is Dog Days, so make stuff inspired by your pets or other animals, for your pet to wear, spin up your cat's hair--it's up to you. We mention the Cattbutt coaster. We review Knits that Breathe: 12 Breezy Projects To Keep You Cool by Julie Turjoman. It retails for $18.95 for digital copy and $24.95 for a paper copy. We both really like it--it's put together in a lovely manner and the patterns are classic and pretty and would be work-appropriate and also age appropriate for women who are not older than their 20s and early 30s. There are a variety of sweater shapes, so there are options for many body types and there are a lot of flattering shapes. Geek Culture: (59:29) We talk about the new Thor, who is woman! We approve. We also point out this very funny Texts from Superheroes on the subject. Events: (1:06:52) KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 7, 2014.  We will have a meetup at the picnic spiral (which is outside the gate so you don't have to go into Disneyland/pay for a ticket) at 1pm. We will have some prizes. We will be at Yarnosphere on October 4th and 5th at the Expo Arts Center in Bixby Knolls in Long Beach. Dizzy Blonde will be a vendor and Jen will just be there for fun. And Jen and Laura will both be at the CogKNITive Fiber Retreat on October 11 in the La Quinta Inn in Tehachapi. Dizzy Blonde Studios will be vending. WeFF will be November 2nd, 2014 in Torrance. Dizzy Blonde Studios will be vending. Our next milestone prize will be at 1000 members, so join the Ravelry Group. And don’t forget to post your finished July projects in the thread!  Keep stashing down!

Don't forget the March stashdown theme is "Madness." Post your finished objects in the thread for a chance to win a copy of Sock Yarn Shawls by Jen Lucas (Thank you to Dorothy for donating it to the podcast!) Also thank you Brenda T. for your donation to the podcast. The April Stashdown theme will be April Showers. Catching Up: (2:33) Jen is doing a show at the Found Theatre. It's parody show that spoofs telethons and medical marijuana. She also saw The Umbrellas of Cherbourg which she loved for the story, the fashion, and the knitwear. She's also taking an acting class at South Coast Repertory. She and Ron have finished watching Star Trek: Voyager and now they have started classic Star Trek. She also watched Pacific Rim and she really enjoyed it. It's not high art, but it's really good silly fun. Laura has been working on her new website and it almost ready! She is working with Furry Logic. She finally saw Catching Fire and The Dark World. She finished Broadchurch. Her granddaughter had her first birthday and Laura made cupcakes. She and Tony are considering adopting another dog. And now that she is no longer doing Nerd Wars, she is hoping to work more on designs. In the Knitting Bag: (23:41) Jen has been doing a lot of knitting. She has been working on her Rocky Coast Cardigan by Hannah Fettig out of Fibre Company Organik in Highlands. It's from the book Coastal Knits. She just started a Leah’s Lovely Cardigan out of Malabrigo Sock in Eggplant. She is working on a 2x2 rib scarf for Interval House out of Patons Wool Classic in the colorway Kimono. She's swatching for Chickadee by Ysolda's book Little Red in the City in Quince and Company Chickadee in Slate, Egret, Lichen, and Rosa Rugosa. She is also working on her Watership Down KAL in Unique Sheep Selene in the colorway Nature Walk. Laura has been making a lot of blanket squares for a Firefly afghan out of various scrap yarns. She's also working on a Nigh Side Hat by Preita Salyer for her brother in Broncos colors of Knitpicks Brava (blue, orange, and white). And she is working on a Leftie by Martina Behm, out of a Miss Babs kit in slate and reds. Finished Objects: (30:50) Laura has finished three blanket squares: the Teddy Bear Wash Cloth by Elaine Fitzpatrick in Berroco Comfort DK in brown, the Steggie Wash Baby Bib by Elaine Fitzpatrick (modified to be a square) out of Berroco Comfort DK in brown, and a feather and fan square out of Dizzy Blonde Dirty Blonde miniskeins in Meg and Pussyfootin'. Devil's Tower: (32:48) Jen is kind of annoyed with vanilla socks right now, so she's not working on them. And she's not weaving in the ends of her Mustachioed blanket. Laura may have Jen test knit some non-vanilla socks. Laura's Leftie may go in...it's hovering around. We mention the Knitmore Girls. Frog Pond: (35:06) We both are lucky and have no sad knitting stories. On Deck: (35:28) Jen wants to make a Leftie of her own and will pull stash out to make it. She also wants to make a Hitchhiker and Brickless. She might use some of the Sunnydale Yarn Club yarn for one and some Abstract Fiber for the other. She also wants to make a pair of Water for the Elephants socks by Rose Hiver in some Knitpicks Stroll in a bare (natural) and Summer Blooms (pink). She also wants to make a Lauriel Cardigan by Ysolda out of Wollmeise DK in Pesto. Laura wants to make a Leaf on the Wind "Wash" Cloth by Becka in Berroco Comfort DK in Celery. She also wants to do a Hand to Hold Dishcloth by Rachel van Schie in Dizzy Blond Studios Dirty Blonde DK in Jessica. And she wants to make a pair of mitts of her own design (it will be released as a free pattern eventually) out of a mystery alpaca yarn, for her husband. Jen talks about Edie Eckman’s Where Do They Get Those Numbers? class. Knit Culture: (44:43) We review Hank and Gracie Save the Day from Cooperative Press by Stacy Klaus, illustrated by Molly Wade. It retails for $9.95 for PDF only and $15.95 for print and PDF. We think it's great for kids, so if you have little ones in your life, we recommend it. We do the prizes for Team Knitmore for the Podcaster Throwdown.
