How to write a book Seth Godin For more than thirty years, Seth has been trying to turn on lights, inspire people and teach them how to level up. His blog has been appearing daily for more than a decade. He has spent most of his professional life as a writer, publishing 20 bestselling books that have been translated into nearly 40 languages. These books are a great way to go deep into a concept, and he hopes many of them stand the test of time. Along the way through his career, Seth has found countless detours, interesting projects, designed to inspire and entertain you as you continue to do your work. His latest book is called THE PRACTICE. Like the one before, THIS IS MARKETING, both were bestsellers. The one before that was called Your Turn. It's illustrated and shareable and provocative. In 2015, Seth created the altMBA. It's a life-changing 30-day workshop and it's entirely possible it will change your life. It's now part of Akimbo, which is now an independently owned entity, a B corp, creating new ways to learn. More than 60,000 people have taken his online courses, including The Marketing Seminar and several on Udemy. He's a member of the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame, the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and, just recently, the plain old no-modifier Marketing Hall of Fame. Which is pretty cool. You can read Seth's free ebooks on the placebo effect and education. And there are five TED talks. He also pioneered ethical online direct marketing, now a $30bn a year industry. Seth Godin is a thinker in the marketing space that I have admired for a very long time, and I am so excited to share some of his work with you all. While he may not use the words “ethical marketer” specifically to describe his work, Godin is definitely a non-bro marketer. He was one of the first to popularize the idea of “permission marketing,” not pushing a product or idea onto anyone, but selling to your ideal customer by adding value and being invited in by our customers. Now, as modern and innovative as Seth Godin is, this is also a very substantive marketing book. Charelle described it as a “thinking marketing book.” It's not written like a straightforward how-to, and it requires active engagement from the reader to parse all the incredible lessons jam-packed on every page. But that's why Charelle and I are here! To help pull out some of the headlines we think you shouldn't miss, though there is too much goodness in this book to fit every valuable thing into one episode.Regardless of where you're at in your marketing journey, I definitely recommend giving this one a read. In this episode of Let Go & Lead, business leader, writer and speaker Niven Postma speaks with Maril about the importance of recognizing and navigating office politics. She and Maril talk about Niven's journey toward focusing on office politics — one which, ironically enough, began with her getting fired — and proceed into a wide-ranging conversation about the balancing acts of leadership. They discuss the “tough empathy” that leaders must find, what it takes to get politically smart in the workplace and how Niven's ideas sync with Gagen's Three Things that Change Everything framework. Learn about: Niven and Maril explore… 13:51 The difference between Control and Controls (social 1) 17:55 Balancing control and letting go 18:29 Tough empathy: compassion + accountability 20:47 How to build mutual commitment 29:04 Why political intelligence is as critical as EQ & IQ (social 2) 33:59 How leaders contribute to office politics 38:59 Office politics in a remote/hybrid world Niven Postma has held executive positions since she was 29, in a career that has spanned multiple sectors and roles. Before starting up her own consultancy and embarking on her PhD, her positions included being CEO of the Businesswomen's Association, Head of the SARB Academy at the South African Reserve Bank and Head of Leadership and Culture for the Standard Bank Group (the largest bank by assets in Africa). She is a Harvard Business Review and Inc. Africa contributor, a strategy and culture facilitator for clients in industries as diverse as financial services, retail, media and manufacturing and an expert lecturer and facilitator on women's leadership development programs around the world. She is also the Chairman of the Board of Cotlands, an NGO that does cutting-edge work in the Early Childhood Development space in South Africa and beyond. — Let Go & Lead is a leadership community created by Maril MacDonald, founder and CEO of Gagen MacDonald. Maril brings together provocateurs, pioneers, thought leaders and those leading the conversation around culture, transformation and change. Over the course of the past 12 years, Let Go & Lead has existed in many forms, from video interviews to resource guides to its current iteration as a podcast. At its core, it remains a place where people can access a diversity of perspectives on interdisciplinary approaches to leadership. Maril is also working on a book incorporating these insights gathered over the past several years from global leaders and change makers. Maril has interviewed over 120 leaders — from business to academia and nonprofits to the arts — through the years. In each conversation, from personal anecdotes to ground-breaking scientific analysis, she has probed the lessons learned in leadership. From these conversations, the Let Go & Lead framework has emerged. It is both a personal and organizational resource that aims to serve the individual leader or leadership at scale. Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book This Is Marketing with special guest Brandon Leibowitz. Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo'd Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don't, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You'll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what's new with the book or the author currently. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *The power of having a niche market and why 100 dedicated users are better than a million followers *Why your business may not need to post on social media every day *How marketing in the digital age differs from the "tried and true" old school marketing methods Want quick saveable, shareable bullet points on today's podcast? Check out the Memo: https://memod.com/KarinRichey/this-is-marketing-with-brandon-leiowitz-4730 Show Notes: Brandon Leibowitz is a digital marketing guru, entrepreneur and founder of SEO Optimizers. https://seooptimizers.com/ What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Every summer, we have a book club here at Agent Grad School. Our students pick the books–one for June, another for July, and a third for August. At the end of each month, we discuss the books and share how we are applying what we learned to our real estate businesses with you. If you are following along with us in the Agent Grad School 2022 Summer Book Club, June's book was This Is Marketing by Seth Godin. his book is a true must-read for every real estate agent. Why? Because it completely redefines how we think about and approach our marketing. Author Seth Godin breaks marketing down into 5 steps, and on today's podcast, a few of our students and I are sharing how we are applying these five steps to our real estate businesses. Learning and most importantly, applying, these five steps will change the way you think – and the way you act – when it comes to marketing your real estate business. Marketing is more than how to find clients, or how to attract clients. It's about finding your niche, and seeing your marketing as a way to help those people find the change they are looking for. We hope it helps you redefine how you market yourself as a real estate agent as much as it did for us. Listen in as the AGS book club and I discuss how we are applying what we learned from this book to our real estate businesses. For more podcasts like this, go to AgentGradSchool.com/podcast.

On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building
Two decades ago, Business Week said today's guest "may be the ultimate entrepreneur for the Information Age," because he's as focused on spreading ideas as the ideas themselves. He is a world-renowned speaker and author of 18 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages. Entrepreneur said his blog was “one of the most-loved marketing blogs on the internet.” He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting leadership, and most of all, changing everything. Some of his most well-known books include “Linchpin,” “Tribes,” “The Dip,” and "Purple Cow.” His newest book, “This Is Marketing” was released this month. He has founded several companies including Yoyodyne and Squidoo - and he is the founder of altMBA and The Marketing Seminar, online workshops that have transformed the work of thousands of people. In recognition of his ability to create and spread powerful ideas, he was inducted into the American Marketing Association's Marketing Hall of Fame earlier this year. Please join me in welcoming Seth Godin. In this episode we discuss: his thoughts on leadership: “Leadership is earning the trust to have people hear and believe you and the discernment to differentiate between the people who want to go there and those who don't.” how he learned to accept loss, discovered he is not good at getting elected, and ultimately learned how to be a great leader. his belief that true marketers learn how to identify things that need to change in the world, come up with a solution to make change happen, and find the people who need that change. his thoughts about how school has been designed to raise kids to be compliant, and the importance of parents to use the time with their kids to help give them the future skills they need. how he does not view himself as a great writer. Instead, he has written over 7,000 blogs and 120 books because he learned to speak more clearly and to write what he was going to say. his marketing strategy that asks “who's it for and what's it for?” what status roles are and how important they have been in his life. how he keeps a generous abundance mindset and thinks “how do I give them the most that I can?” instead of “how do I get the most out of them?” his thoughts about “tit for tat” mindsets and networking with other people. his mindset about people taking his ideas and running with them, and how it makes him happy to see people use his ideas to create positive change in the world. Well, this is fun. Here's another episode featuring me, Robbie Swale. No guests this time, and no content from the past, either: this all new and includes some exciting announcements, as well as insights and stories I haven't shared before from my experience of creating new ways of working in my coaching business. In particular, I talk about:The lessons I've learned from the three group coaching programmes I've launched: how do we start a group coaching programme? How do we sell one to people? The four criteria I use when deciding whether to create a new way of working in my business. And, most excitingly, I launch the new Coach's Journey Community, a new way to work with me, starting from just £10 a month. That community is wrapped up along with the new opportunity to support the Coach's Journey financially. If you value this work that I'm doing and want to make it easier for me to continue it, and give it the potential to grow faster and further, you might want to consider becoming a Supporter. But don't worry, the podcast will always be free and there's no presure at all from me to support the podcast financially. That's only part of the episode, though - creating the Coach's Journey Community and a new one-on-one engagement that I'm running with several clients this autumn made me really think about how and when I create new ways of working with clients. In this episode, I've tried to really share how I think about creating new ways of working, including why I'm excited about this one, and all kinds of things that might be valuable to you on your journey as a coach. If there's anything I didn't cover or anything you want to ask, let me know and maybe I'll do a follow-up episode answering questions! For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.To read more about supporting The Coach's Journey, or to become a Supporter or a Community Member, visit https://www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people I mentioned (that you might be interested in):~5: My article, ‘Jordan Peterson Is Not Evil and Why That Matters' - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/jordan-peterson-evil-why-matters-robbie-swale/~10: My article, ‘How I Became A Full Time Coach Less Than Two Years After Finishing My Training' on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-i-became-full-time-coach-less-than-two-years-after-robbie-swale~10: My 200th LinkedIn Article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lessons-from-200-linkedin-articles-out-robbie-swale/~13: Phil Bolton and on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-2-phil-bolton-from-forensic-accountant-to-the-go-to-career-coach-in-london-and-on-to-work-with-ceos-mds-and-founders~13: Mike Toller: https://www.michaeltollercoaching.co.uk/~13: Vegard Olsen: https://coachingpartner.net/cp/en/vegard-olsen-2/~14: Joel Monk on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-6-joel-monk-conversations-at-the-cutting-edge-of-coaching & The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Leap-Conquer-Hidden-Level/dp/0061735361~16: Rich Litvin and The Prosperous Coach: https://richlitvin.com/the-prosperous-coach/~16: My article, 6 Reasons Why Hiring A Coach Is The Most Important Thing For You To Do If You Want A Successful Coaching Business: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/writing/6-reasons-why-hiring-a-coach-is-the-most-important-thing-for-you-to-do-if-you-want-a-successful-coaching-business~20: Minor Arias on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-3-minor-arias-living-by-design-glz56~22: Warren Buffet's 25 things game - see Number 2, here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/15-ways-transform-your-relationship-time-get-more-done-robbie-swale/~26: Kristen Kosinski on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-7-kristen-kosinski-power-of-being-truly-seen-with-all-your-messiness~33: My article, The Pioneering Women of Our Age on my website: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2018/9/10/the-pioneering-women-of-our-age and on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/pioneering-women-our-age-robbie-swale/~35: Katie Harvey on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-1-katie-harvey-14000-hours-of-coaching-being-part-of-the-uk-coaching-vanguard-and-being-a-generalist-coach~36: The Genius Accelerator Group Coaching Programme: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/the-genius-accelerator~44: Jordan Hall: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMzT-mdCqoyEv_-YZVtE7MQ and more about the Zone of Genius and Hall's influence on my thinking about that in the introduction to The Power To Choose: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2019/12/30/the-power-to-choose-preview~55: My brother. Welcome Hearts on Fiber owner Kim Clark to the podcast! Hearts on fiber has been recognized as a favorite local business by a few of my guests, so I was really pleased to have this chat with Kim. She shares a lot of her background and inspiration for starting this crafty small business, along with stories of the special relationships she has formed with her customers and other local small businesses. Best of all: she started this business in her living room! I do love a story about a business that started at home - enjoy! From the Hearts on Fiber website:"Fiber and Crafts that are good for your heart. In life, we can't control the bad stuff that happens, but we can control the beauty we add to the world. We hope to inspire people to make beautiful art."Helpful links:Website https://heartsonfiber.com/Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heartsonfiber/Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heartsonfiber/Location:208 South Village Lane, Suite ADavidson, NC 28036704-765-9253Local businesses mentioned in this episode:Mainstreet Books Davidson https://www.mainstreetbooksdavidson.com/Davidson Wine Company https://davidsonwineco.com/Summit Coffee Davidson https://summitcoffee.com/basecampAR Workshop Davidson https://www.arworkshop.com/davidson/The Casual Creative https://www.thecasualcreative.org/Whit's Frozen Custard Davidson https://whitsdavidson.shopsettings.com/Recommended books:This Is Marketing, Seth GodinGrow Like A Lobster, Joshua DickThe Medici Effect, Franz JohanssonChecklist Manifesto, Atul GawandeSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/epicjourneymedia)
