Nestled deep in the Wicklow Mountains, Glenmalure was once a stronghold for rebels and a sanctuary from the outside world. But long after the echoes of rebellion faded, the valley remained a place apart, where the comforts of modern life arrived late. Glenmalure was only connected to the electricity grid and running water in the late 20th century, and the rhythms of daily existence were shaped by isolation, resilience, and community spirit. In this evocative episode, which concludes a series on the Wicklow Military Road, historian Fin Dwyer shares the stories of people who lived in this isolated and remote valley.Recorded in a 200-year-old inn, this episode weaves together personal recollections, local history, and the enduring landscape of Glenmalure. It is a tribute to a way of life that has only recently disappeared! The episode features the voices of Carmel O'Toole, Michael Fewer, Marion McEvoy, Hugh McLindon, and Pat Dunne. This episode would not have been possible by the hours of recordings with the Glenamalure Pure Mile Group. Thanks to the Glenmalure Lodge for faciliating this episode.A special thanks to Deirdre Burns, the Heritage Officer of Wicklow County Council. This episode was funded by Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council.Sound by Kate Dunlea.200 Anniversary Events to mark the death of Michael Dwyer This year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Michael Dwyer, the rebel who played a pivotal role in the history of the Wicklow Military Road. On the week when ‘The Chip Race' turned 9 years old, we are joined by ACR ambassador and the 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker. We've got ipoker's network manager Baard Dahl. For strategy, reigning Irish Open champion David Docherty breaks down a hand he played against Tom Kitt on his way to that famous victory. The idea of an entrepreneur giving up ‘a good job' in order to pursue their own venture is hardly an isolated one, but few entrepreneurs would believe their journey could take 20 years, seeing off a dot-com crash, two terrorist attacks on either side of the Atlantic, and a global financial crisis – any one of which probably brought down many SME's. But that is exactly what today's guest did. In 1999, Michael Dwyer sketched out the basis for his new venture on the front of an Irish Independent newspaper on a flight back from London, that would see him quit a marketing director role with Northern Foods to develop a hub on the internet to bring brands and consumers together in a way that works for both, using offers as a key attraction. And with that Pigsback.com was born. What followed were thousands of squeezy pink pig stress relievers, multiple ups and downs that saw the business skirt perilously close to oblivion, and further fund raises, harsh cost cutting plans, illogical price from competitors – which proved to be their undoing - before finally selling the business in April 2019 to Secret Escapes for €25m. This is the 18th episode with guest Michael Dwyer, Entrepreneur and Founder of Pigsback.com in the Davy podcast series 'Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly'. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. Dr Kanjana Thepboriruk sits down with Dr Michael Dwyer to talk aboutstate reversals of earlier agrarian reforms in Southeast Asia that have rolled back “land-to-the-tiller” policies created in the wake of Cold War–era revolutions. They disucss this trend, marked by increased land concentration and the promotion of export-oriented agribusiness at the expense of smallholder farmers, and exposing the convergence of capitalist relations and state agendas that expand territorial control within and across national borders. Michael Dwyer is an Organizational Change Management Analyst at the Lasing Board of Water and Light. Rebecca Rostar is the Supervisor of Organizational Training, Development and Change Management at Lansing Board of Water & Light. They sit down with host Justin Lake to talk about how to overcome the challenges facing the frontline workers today. Takeaways Communication in terms of talking about change is the biggest challenge facing the frontline workers today. You need to find the best and most effective way to talk with them. You have to be open to feedback and criticism and be able to let management know how you feel. Nothing will change if you don't tell them that something isn't working. Having boots on the ground is an invaluable resource. Make the trip once a month to spend a day with those on the frontline and see what they are going through and what can be improved to help them. A Change Manager can help bridge the gap in communication between management and those on the frontline more effectively than through zoom meetings. Increasing the volume and the quality of communication is a key to success. You want to find a healthy balance where you aren't overwhelming those on the frontline. You want to be intentional with the communication you send out. You want to cover all the bases and make sure everyone is on the same page. Employees should feel safe to open up about if they understand the change they are facing. There needs to be trust and transparency between both management and deskless workers. Quote of the show 15:56 “I try to foster an environment where people feel okay telling me things. Just tell me what you think, because we can't change stuff. We can't make corrections. We can't address issues without you telling us how you truly feel to what's going on and change management is feeling a lot of it is how you feel about something.” Links Michael's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dwyer-b9745025/ Rebecca's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-rostar-45156615/ Company Website: https://www.lbwl.com/ Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/2f4ecd92-6468-4769-b0bf-254e236510b7/FRONTLINE-INNOVATORS Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/frontline-innovators/id1572329402 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/29m3wnK8pbFjdSvJ9wjmyS Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/frontline-innovators Google Play - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZnJvbnRsaW5laW5ub3ZhdG9ycy5jb20vZmVlZC54bWw YouTube - https://youtu.be/b6hdV58D7XE

Bowie’s sustained narrative of modern anxiety and impending doom has always set him apart in the often feel-good world of rock ’n’ roll as we know it. Starting with the storyboards and video for Bowie’s shelved Diamond Dogs movie project, Michael Dwyer springboards into one of the defining themes of Bowie’s catalogue, one which the man himself once described as his own personal “non-specific nagging fear”.
Steve Kilbey is a songwriter, musician and author. Steve is best known as the songwriter and frontman of Australian rock band The Church, a role which he has inhabited for 35 years across the band’s extensive and respected career. In 2014, he became a published author with the release of his memoir, Something Quite Peculiar, which explored his history working as a professional musician, from his first job playing in a popular cover band in Canberra as a teenager, through to more recent years as he approaches 60. I first met Steve in February 2013, when I interviewed him for my book Talking Smack, about his experiences with illicit drugs in general and his addiction to heroin in particular. The Kilbey chapter opened the book, not only because it was the most immediately engaging and transformative story, but because Steve is such an articulate and fascinating interviewee that I was tempted to just publish the transcript in its entirety, and leave it at that. (An edited version of the Kilbey chapter from Talking Smack was published in The Weekend Australian Review, which you can read here; there’s also a funny YouTube clip filmed at our first meeting here.) This conversation took place on a Sunday afternoon in a downmarket hotel room in inner-city Brisbane in early July, when The Church were playing two shows at The Triffid. This was billed as a double-album tour, where the 1982 album The Blurred Crusade and the band’s most recent album, Further/Deeper, were intended to be played in full, but as we discuss here, the band soon realised that wasn’t such a good idea. While we spoke, Steve and I sat on the floor of the hotel room, with the microphone between us. There were a couple of other blokes in the room while we recorded: fellow journalist Michael Dwyer, and Mike Brook, who filmed our interview as part of the documentary about Kilbey he’s currently working on. Our conversation touches on the experience of writing his memoir, and Steve’s response to my review published in The Weekend Australian; the differences between his on-stage and off-stage personalities; how he went about learning the bass guitar; how his artistic career is dictated by money, and how he enjoys being lean and hungry; the origins of his remarkable blog, which is named The Time Being; and how he prefers to write lyrics in a stream-of-consciousness style that’s rarely edited between the page and finalised albums. Steve Kilbey began his professional music career when he was 17. He played in several bands before forming The Church in Sydney in 1980. After some initial success, Kilbey and The Church shot to international fame in 1988 when their album Starfish, featuring the song ‘Under the Milky Way’, rose to the top of the music charts in both Australia and the US. Kilbey has collaborated with a vast array of musicians on various projects and has produced a number of solo works as well. He is also a painter, poet and music producer. In 2010 The Church was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Steve Kilbey currently lives in Bondi, Sydney and continues to evolve through his craft as a vocalist, songwriter, poet, artist, actor, writer and guitarist bringing all his talents together for unique and instinctive performances.
