"Look, I'm not one to gossip; it's not my nature. Truth? Truth! Now, that's my nature." We watched "Trick" from 1999 with our friend Jake Szczepaniak, and we need to borrow your apartment for 20 minutes... okay, maybe 45. Now, this is a movie that really made us gay! This movie instantly transports us to the '90s in New York City, pre-hookup apps, pre-“RuPaul's Drag Race", and pre-PrEP. If you got cruised on the subway, you had mere moments to make a decision that could drastically change your life, and this time capsule of a movie captures those days perfectly. Christian Campbell (yes, Neve's brother) and JP PItoc are adorable as our two leads just trying to find a spot to get busy during one crazy night in the city. Tori Spelling is mega-charming (and funny!) as the dizzy theater-girl best friend, and the one and only Miss Coco Peru delivers one of the most memorable monologues in gay movie history. All you have to say is "It Buuuuuurns," and if they get it, you're in good company. Nigel's guest today is Miss Coco Peru, drag royalty who has been a household name in the queer community for over 30 years. Her list of achievements is incredible – from starring in films like To Wong Foo and Wigstock, through to raising funds for LGBTQ causes with her iconic Conversations With Coco events. The list of people she has worked with includes everyone from Liza Minnelli and Jane Fonda, to Lily Tomlin and Bea Arthur, who became one of Coco's close friends. She is a passionate activist with her unflagging support of the LGBTQIA community and firce dedication to AIDS related charities. It was this dedication that led to her winning the Los Angeles LGBT Centre's Board Of Director's Award. She is the matriarch of drag onstage and happily married to her husband off it…This series is a celebration of a beautiful queer community; people of all ages, people who have had to tread their own path to live their real truth, who have fought with their emotions and emerged victorious, who inspire, who aspire and always entertain. Welcome to a powerful and enlightening conversation between Johnny Ross and drag legend, Miss Coco Peru. In this week's episode of the Beautiful and Bothered podcast, Johnny and Coco share their thoughts on why drag is being scapegoated and the dangerous consequences of such misconceptions. From ignorant and homophobic politicians to the hypocrisy of our society, they discuss how children are being used as a pawn to avoid protecting them in real ways. It's time to face the truth: the demonization of drag and transgender people is rooted in bigotry and hate, and it's time for us to hold those in power accountable for their harmful actions. Additionally, Coco speaks candidly about her own experiences growing up queer and the impact of being groomed to be straight, which affects many queer children's ability to believe in love. This is a conversation you won't want to miss, as Coco sheds light on the importance of education, acceptance, and love in the face of adversity. Miss Coco Peru belongs to the league of drag icons who first made their marks in the early nineties and have risen to media, social media, and cult status. Miss Coco, the drag persona of American actor, comedian Clinton Leupp, first came to prominence with pivotal appearances in both Wigstock: The Movie and To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar in 1995. Since then, she has made numerous appearances as both an actress, entertainer, host, and activist and is a beloved figure in American LGBTQIA community and beyond. Her youtube channel is immensely popular, especially her Coco Goes series where she takes viewers along as she goes shopping at various commercial outlets in Southern California. Her long-year perspective on the LGBTQ equal rights movement plus her observation of consumerism made her an excellent interview partner to discuss the seemingly through-the-roof commercialisation of PRIDE 2021. LOVE IS IN THE AIRRRRR...and we're ready to launch into our new theme with the 1999 gay rom-com, Trick. Starring Christian Campbell (Neve Campbell's brother!) as Gabriel, a twenty-something New Yorker who hasn't quite figured out who he is (both as a person and as a gay man) as he meets smoldering go-go boy Mark, played by John Paul Pitoc, and the two try to find a place to hook up for just one night...when they're lambasted by jerkbag roommates, annoying, cock-blocking best friends (hello, Tori Spelling! In the role she was BORN TO PLAY), ex-lovers, and a drag queen with one of the BEST MONOLOGUE MOMENTS WE'VE EVER SEEN (thank you, Miss Coco Peru!). This movie is adorable and brings back a lot of NYC memories for Graham and Katie as the gang talks about what life is like in your twenties. It's a one-night showcase to bring the house down! So Sarah and I were both really lucky to sit down with living legend, Miss Coco Peru recently. Sarah and I are huge fans and it made sense that she would be the icing on the cake for Season 2. Coco is without a doubt one of the greatest performers in the industry. She's done film and theatre and her one-woman shows are legendary but it's her humour, her compassion and her activism that sets her apart from most. I feel like she needs no introduction so if you aren't familiar, head over to her YouTube page and prepare to spend hours giggling hysterically to yourself.

You may not know the name Clinton Leupp. How about Miss Coco Peru? Clinton created the drag icon, Miss Coco Peru and has become a celebrated storyteller and performer. Miss Coco has been entertaining us with comedic monologues and endearing stories for 25 years. In addition to the many original stage shows, she’s found in films including Trick, Girls Will Be Girls, and TV series such as Will & Grace and Arrested Development. Most recently, Miss Coco has found additional notoriety in her clever YouTube videos. There's an intriguing story beyond Miss Coco — how Clinton followed his dream of working in entertainment and creating his own unique path. Clinton started Coco way before it was mainstream (AKA, no Rupal's Drag Race). In our chat we get into the challenges and highlights along the way, and even talk career advice, other fun anecdotes After this interview, I went from fan, to admirer. Clinton was brave enough to find his truth and live it so publicly — inadvertently helping others find acceptance and a role model. What happens to fussy little boys who love musical theater and have lots of feelings? If they're lucky, they grow up to be fearless women. My guest this week is the fabulous Miss Coco Peru, who you've seen in movies like Girls Will be Girls, To Wong Foo, Trick, and as a guest star in the greatest cold open in the entire run of Will and Grace. Like most sensitive boys, Coco grew up feeling as though she was on an island -- but in her case, it was literally true. Fortunately, she had records to keep her company, and occasional trips to the bright lights of Broadway. In fact, it was while riding the train in New York that she discovered what she now calls the key to her career -- and her liberation.
Well-Strung, a New York City based string quartet, derives their unique blend of vocals and strings by fusing classical music with the pop music of today. The group was conceived by producer Mark Cortale and Chris Marchant.Daniel Shevlin is originally from South Jersey and has been playing cello since he was ten years old and continued to use this skill when he moved to NYC at 18 to pursue a career in musical theatre. He studied musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and has been a member of Actors Equity since 2006.Edmund Bagnell comes from South Carolina where he attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and went on to attend New York University as music major.
