How should a dentist know if and when to seek professional help with their money? That's a question Shawn Terrell was asked by Dr. Grace Yum as a guest on the Mommy Dentists in Business Podcast. This episode of Dentists, Puns, & Money is a replay of Shawn's guest appearance on the MDIB Podcast, which was originally recorded in the summer of 2022.Dr. Yum started as a pediatric dentist in Chicago, but has since relocated to California, where she's currently growing her Mommy Dentists in Business empire.Dr. Grace and Shawn discuss how dentists of all career stages can think about financial planning, and why the most important piece of planning is first helping each dentist identify what they want out of life, broadly speaking. There's also some casual banter about sports and music mixed in, so proceed with caution if you're bored by either. As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website dentistexit.com and clicking on the Podcast tab. ---------------------------------Dentist Exit Planning Resources:Website: dentistexit.comSchedule a Discovery Meeting with ShawnSign-Up for Dentist Exit Email Newsletter--------------------------------Follow Dentist Exit on Social Media:Facebook Group for DentistsInstagramLinkedIn

Some are low risk.7) Build a great culture that your team wants to stay in.Quotes:“Looking back and polling the 10,000 [in the Mommy Dentists in Business community], I was able to harvest information, analytical data, on independent practices — not large DSOs — on what they did to financially do better than previous years. One might think, ‘Of course. We shut down. It was COVID-19. Nobody practiced for a couple months. Of course, numbers are going to go down. Of course, production is going to go down. Overhead went up,' etc. However, there were many practices that outperformed what they did in previous years. And so, I wanted to know, ‘What did you do to outperform yourself?' And hence, the word, outperformers. And I was able to collect a lot of information from everyone who was willing to share. Some did not want to share publicly on Facebook, so they sent me private messages or emails. And after filtering through all that data, I was able to come up with seven consistent points for action.” (5:11—6:29)“Number one, COVID-19 protocols were adopted and set in place, in motion, fast. So, the practices that were able to prepare their teams and get those protocols in place and get everybody lined up early on so that when the states say, ‘Open,' they're ready to go. Because a lot of states said emergencies only. You can only do emergencies. It depended on population density of your town because there are rural parts where COVID-19...

How I Built Mommy Dentists in Business Episode #447 with Dr. Grace Yum Being a mom is hard. Being a mom, dentist, and business owner is even harder. You can't do it alone, so Kirk Behrendt brings in Dr. Grace Yum, founder and CEO of Mommy Dentists in Business, to help dentists who are moms find the community and support they need online. As the old saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. To find your village that can help make your life better, listen to Episode 447 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: There will be some sacrifices being a dentist and a mom. Find or create your “village” if you don't have one. MDIB is a great resource to find a community. It's okay to not feel okay as a new mother. If you're overwhelmed, hang in there! Quotes: “Nothing in life that's worthwhile is easy.” (7:52—7:56) “You have to figure out who are the people that are going to help you because you cannot do this by yourself. It's just a lot of work. So, whether it's a part-time nanny, full-time nanny, whether it's the grandparents, it takes a village. That expression is very true, and you need to figure out who your village is. And that support network is crucial to your success and your happiness.” (15:38—16:07) “There are days where the school might call, ‘You need to pick up your kid. She's got a fever,' and you're in the middle of a procedure. So, you're going to have to send a dental assistant to go pick up your kid and bring them to the office. So, there are some modifications that we all have to make and do, and sacrifices, in order to be able to do both dentistry and be a mom.” (16:30—16:57) “A lot of mothers have this feeling of guilt like, ‘I'm not there enough for my kid,' or, ‘I am not present enough,' or, ‘If I was a stay-at-home mom, my kid might be better off.' And those are all emotions and feelings that a lot of mothers feel. That's normal. And you just have to do what's best for you. There are people like me that, I wouldn't be a good mother if I was a full-time mom. I just am not cut out to be a full-time mom. And God bless the full-time mothers because I think that's a harder job. For me, it's easier to go to work — I have full control of my workspace — than it is to be at home full-time. And for me, I'm fulfilled, personally, with dentistry as my career, helping patients, seeing my patients and my team. That fulfills me. And if I didn't have that, then I'm not sure if staying at home while the kids are at school, I'd find something in lieu of that that would be fulfilling.” (16:58—18:01) “What I found was that there wasn't really a space for me to ask questions such as, ‘Oh, I just got back from maternity leave. Did your schedule change?' or, ‘My hygienist who's working for me, she just got back from maternity, but she needs a place to pump or nurse.' And the comments from the men — they think they're funny — were not helpful at all. They would say things like, ‘Well, tell her to pump in the car — and clock out, by the way,' or, ‘Tell her to not come back to work until she's done with that,' just things that were very short-sighted or not helpful. Not that they aren't being polite or professional. It's just, they don't get it.” (20:28—21:17) “As a mom, you're at work and thinking about, ‘Okay, what am I making for dinner tonight?' or, ‘Oh my gosh, Jimmy's got his school play tomorrow. What do I need prepped for that?' or, ‘Oh, the birthday party is this weekend. Did I buy the birthday gift? I need that wrapped. Oh, Christmas and Hanukkah. Oh, the play. The school.' So, there are a gazillion things going on in a mom's brain while she's at work. And then, when she's at home, she's thinking, ‘That temporary crown that was rocking a little bit, I hope it stays on for the next two weeks. That patient who had a dry socket, I hope that he's doing well. Oh, my phone's ringing because I'm on-call, and little Benjamin just got whacked in the face with a baseball bat and cracked number eight and...

Today's guest is someone every mommy would look up to. She's not only a successful pediatric dentist, but she's also an amazing business owner, podcast host, and of course, a great mommy to two kids. I would've loved to go on and on with her on this interview, but time was very limited. Despite that, Dr. Yum shared a ton of wisdom and her passion and dedication for what she does shines ever so brightly. All about Dr. Grace Yum:She is a mother and a certified pediatric dentist, a certification achieved by only 5% of all dentists in the U.S. The founder and practice owner of Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids, with two locations, she is also the founder and CEO of Mommy Dentists in Business. While on a trip with her husband, she noticed how lawyers connected and networked with one another and felt that dentistry was missing that component of comradery. Dr. Stephanie Mapp is a 1994 graduate of the University of Florida College of Dentistry. She started her college career following the footsteps of her father who was a psychologist. She chose dentistry after becoming a patient at the dental college and realizing at that time dentistry was lacking female dentists. With over 25 years of dental experience, Dr. Mapp has worked in multiple types of dental settings including corporate group practices in North Florida as well as public health. She started her first practice in 2002 and purchased a second location in 2011. After discovering that most dentists struggle to navigate the difficult landscape of PPO dental insurance pitfalls, she founded her consulting company, Mapp Your Practice, which gives one on one consulting and training to dentists and offices who want to increase their profits by working smarter instead of harder. Dr. Mapp has also contributed to many online dental forums, podcasts, articles, CE courses and two books. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, Northeast District Dental Society, Mommy Dentists in Business and was a founding member of Clay Women in Business. This week's episode is different. It’s the goal of many dental practitioners to eventually own their private practice where they can practice their specialty or high-end dentistry. But as setting up shop is difficult even for seasoned dentists, so the trend nowadays is to find a business partner to help you out in this endeavor. This is what Dr. George Betancourt and Dr. John Pinnix did, who opened their own private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. (02:35) On this episode of White Coat Wellness, these two owners of Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney talk about their journey in forming their practice and how they have made it into a successful business over the years. For them, it’s all about being on the same page with your partner in terms of outlook and philosophy and the level of dentistry you both want to practice. While you don’t need to be exactly the same, you need to have some point of similarity and espouse the same values not just in the industry, but in life too. They reveal that success didn’t come easy for them, but with a lot of hard work being put towards the same goal, they have come so far from when they started with just a couple of patients in a week. The growth may have been slow, but they grew the right way with the right time. And now, they are able to offer niche services that they have been interested in doing for a while. (11:48) For them, you also need to seek help in other aspects of a dental business, such as the legal and financial areas, as these are not taught at school. (24:59) Learn how to delegate tasks that you are not capable of doing and get good representation in those. Finding the right staff (16:27) is also a crucial part of the practice and having a good team by your side is a huge factor in your success. The same vision and goals that you and your business partner share must trickle down to everyone – the office staff, hygienists and assistants. Lines of communication must be open (20:30) and a high level of trust have to be shared among yourselves, so you not only succeed financially, but serve your patients effectively too. You must be willing to invest not just in your employees, but in new technology and equipment that can make improve the quality of your work. Ultimately, for Dr. Betancourt and Dr. Pinnix, it’s all about creating a balance between meeting financial goals, providing a healthy working environment and spending time with family and loved ones, while offering quality dentistry. To know more about Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney and the services they offer, you can check out their website: www.blakeneysmiles.com (http://www.blakeneysmiles.com) This week’s White Coat Wisdom discusses budgeting, one of the dreaded topics of financial planning. Budgeting is not an exact science, and in order to do it properly, you must veer away from the traditional way of executing it. Instead of tracking each expense you’ve incurred, choose 1 to 2 categories to focus on. Be extra mindful when making purchases in those areas, so you can control even a few aspects of your spending. Dr. Grace Yum is also featured in this week’s White Coat Achievements. A pediatric dentist by profession, she founded the Facebook group Mommy Dentists in Business Community (https://www.facebook.com/MommyDentistsinBusinessMediaNetwork/) , a group that helps moms be successful in their own medical careers. The White Coat Wellness podcast by Spaugh Dameron Tenny highlights real-life stories from doctors and dentist to encourage and inspire listeners through discussions of professional successes and failures in addition to personal stories and financial wellness advice. Spaugh Dameron Tenny is a comprehensive financial planning firm serving doctors and dentist in Charlotte, NC.
