We've been on tour for the past couple of months, recording live episodes in some of the manufacturing hot spots around the country. Indiana is our current stop, where Guggman Haus Brewing hosted us for an episode all about innovation, technology, culture, and, of course, Indiana's manufacturing prowess. Manufacturing makes up a huge portion of Indiana's economy and culture, so we look behind the scenes at what the state is getting right to make it a manufacturing hub. We welcomed Noel Hopkins, the Principal of Digital Growth at CliftonLarsonAllen and digital transformation expert, joins along with self-titled “private equity mercenary” Steve Martin, who sits on the board at Elevate Ventures. We also welcomed Kathy Miller, President and Co-Founder of YK2020 and OPSisters, plus co-author of the book Steel Toes and Stilettos.Noel, Steve, and Kathy share their takes on local manufacturing and how it's adapting to the rapid evolution of tech like AI. But it's not just tech that's shaping the industry. In this episode, find out:What can manufacturers learn from IndianaThe role of digital transformation in manufacturing and the best ways to implement it Why leadership is key to driving transformation and the top characteristics good leaders need The challenges facing Indiana's manufacturing industry from a private equity viewpoint Why you should always look at the problems facing your organization first, then find tech to solve it (not the other way around)Why fewer companies are using tech for the sake of it and are becoming more intentionalLessons learned from past experiences and why manufacturing is all about the people Areas where technology is making the most difference and how it impacts the people working with it How to build scale and transferability within organizations with the three Ps – people, planning, process The importance of having a vision and the ability to execute on it and why leaders are central to this Why hesitancy is the most dangerous thing manufacturers could do right now Innovation's impact on psychological safety in the workplace, plus why we need to be open to making mistakes Enjoying the show? Phillip sat down with Deana Burke for the 100th episode of the Boys Club pod. They talk the Multiplayer Brand and some of the Future Commerce thinking about what makes eCommerce special and how brand operators are trying to tune out the noise and think bigger than tactics. We're moving up out of strategy into vision and how company leaders are looking at new channels to grow digital outside of just websites. One of those channels, of course, is metaverse. Our Work Has Range{00:11:02} - “There is a percentage of people that wanna participate in building a brand, for sure, just like there's a percentage of people who want to make TikTok videos, but there's a much larger percentage of people who want to just passively consume TikTok videos, and they don't wanna actually be creators. And I think that will always be true. There are these different types of consumer behaviors and not everyone wants to participate.” - Deana{00:11:59} - “Any strength overextended is a weakness. So you can be too multiplayer, for instance.” - Phillip{00:28:55} - “There's probably one way that capital can accelerate and lose your soul. I think there's another way that having a long, long, long, long-term outlook on preserving the history and the future of the brand can restore a soul as well.” - Phillip{00:32:27} - “Gaming as an industry eclipses any other form of media when combined. You know, you put the movie industry and newspapers and television together, and it comes nowhere close to the amount of daily active eyeballs, and time that's spent in these communal experiences.” - Phillip{00:38:28} - “There's something really powerful about Costco is not actually the thing, but it's the connective tissue in between the things that are life. And the trips to the store actually make a really big impact on you and your behavior both as a consumer and as a person.” - Phillip{00:42:51} - “Innovation is at the heart of being and finding the muse in our modern era. And commerce has a role to play in the way people find personal inspiration and fulfillment.” - PhillipAssociated Links:Learn more about Deana Burke and Boys ClubGrab your copy of The Multiplayer Brand for just $20 with free shipping in the U.S.Have you checked out our YouTube channel yet?Subscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? [47:56] Bryana states that we are all called to be our authentic selves, and explains how she brings her authentic self to her online presence. Christie Rocha's and Bryana Kappadakunnel's Ah-Ha Moments “I'm not going to put myself out there in ways that are inauthentic to me, just for clicks, or likes or views. That's just not the life that I personally feel comfortable and confident living.” – Bryana Kappadakunnel “Being a creator on a big social media platform, you are owned by that social media company. And you cannot have your business rely on Instagram or Facebook, they need to be avenues to funnel a business but you cannot rely on it. Because in a second, and I mean that literally, it can be completely swept away from you.” – Bryana Kappadakunnel “Check your source.” – Christie Rocha “Knowing yourself, knowing your values, knowing what you stand for and how you want to show up—that's the most important thing.” – Christie Rocha More About Bryana Kappadakunnel Bryana Kappadakunnel is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (90464), an Infant-Family Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist, and a Perinatal Mental Health Specialist-Certified. She is the owner & voice behind Conscious Mommy where she teaches parents to become the conscious parent they never had. Since 2011, Bryana has worked exclusively with families with very young children to navigate challenges related to child development, behavioral & emotional issues, attachment problems, and trauma. Guided by attachment theory and the neurorelational framework, her approach is unique in that she works primarily with parents by helping them discover their child's nervous system and developmental needs. In this process, parents also learn how to regulate their own triggered reactions and discover more self-control and self-compassion. She also guides parents to develop vital skills in self-reflection & deconstructing familial cycles of guilt and shame, which aims to drastically shift the child-parent relational patterns. Bryana also works with new moms experiencing perinatal mood or anxiety disorders. She uses a conscious- and mindfulness-informed approach to help moms realign their expectations with reality, deconstruct the guilt & shame they're experiencing, and shift into the present moment, where depression and anxiety cannot exist. Bryana has a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, has been licensed since 2015, and has an extensive number of advanced certifications & specializations in perinatal, infant, and early childhood mental health as well as conscious parenting. She is the mom of 2 young children, and lives with her spouse in Southern California. Connect with Bryana Kappadakunnel Website Instagram Facebook TikTok Threads Connect with Christie! Daniel Shlossman is the SVP, DIgital + Growth @ sweetgreen. He leads marketing, product, and digital channels. In his three years at sweetgreen, Daniel has been focused on enabling customer growth through channel expansion and improvement, including the launch of sweetgreen's off-premise business, via Outpost and delivery. Daniel's incredible background includes roles at Uber (as Head of West Coast Operations & Marketing) and at NFL (as their Director of Product for Fantasy Football). Disruption in any market starts with passionate founders who see opportunities to scale in all domains and are not limited by a particular mode or channel of growth. Don't think that you need to build a mobile app because “everyone else is doing it”. A mobile app gives you the opportunity to use your resources to add value to your customers' lives and grab a huge chunk of the market in the process. Even with a great product-market fit, your team is the most crucial aspect of building a mobile app. A collaborative culture among people who love to work together allows for that facilitation across different departments and different channels and is crucial to make growth happen. You should identify opportunity areas and really go after them. Even if you don't know something - you will make mistakes and learn from them. It's important to have candid conversations to get better with each decision. Follow a detailed diagnosis process within your team to learn from your mistakes as well as projects that were fully or partially successful. Sometimes, the best ideas come from taking something your customers already love and making it even better. One great way to turn such commonplace ideas into massive growth opportunities is to combine a few popular features that customers are experiencing in your app or your competitors. Also, look at enhancing key features to add something new to the app. Successful pivots in tough times like the pandemic require nimbleness and agility in executing a response to the new situation. At sweetgreen, they found this opportunity via shifting operations to donations to frontline medical workers in need. They repurposed and adapted their existing processes to respond to this opportunity. Personalization allows you to get close to the customers. At sweetgreen, Daniel thinks about personalization from the perspective of the customer. This way, personalizing a service goes far beyond small changes that give customers some control over the product you create for them. It means letting them care about the product in a way that grants them ownership of the product resulting from the service, including full customization of chosen ingredients.
